Having just done my wishbones with the help of your videos I really didn't want to struggle like you did and came up with a way to prevent the problems you had. The passenger side only has a short drive shaft and does not have the extra joint in it that "pops" out. This means it keeps the hub where it should be and wishbone lines up first time. The drivers side however can pop out and thus it swings the hub outwards and makes getting the wishbone balljoint in hard. Zip tie the joint up together tight so it cannot split and its as easy as the passenger side :) Thanks for the video, I like how you keep it honest and show the stuggles.
I really really really wish I found this video before I started doing this job myself, if I had known of the misery of it I wouldn't even have attempted it hahaha
I'm starting to like that Universal CV Boot tool! We've had a few cases over the last year where a simple CV boot change turned into a complete axle replacement, because the axle shaft splines got damaged when pulling / pressing the outer cv joint off. I have added the tool to my Amazon wish list! =)
Hi, could do with guidance on doing the wishbone on the ground. Biggest challenge is getting the old rusty bolts off. How do you deal with badly rusted bolts and if I need to cut the bolts off are replacements only obtainable from main dealers?
I done the lower arm on my mondeo today. Next time take the drop link off the strut makes life alot easier took me a good 3 hours but I was working on the floor with minimal tools. Nightmare. 🤣🤣
Universal boots + that pneumatic tool is definitely the way to go, it saves a lot of time. I've worked in too many places where they didn't want to "invest" in new "unnecessary" tools, and we were told to do it the old way, which half the time meant taking the axle off and doing it in the vice.
Good job. That's hub mate's a good thing. Now, this'll make you laugh. Few years ago I had to put a rack boot on. Well after struggling for over an hour, they told me it was a universal one. First I'd done in years and never heard of one. Cut it to the correct size and it took 2 minutes lol. Well someone has to provide the laughs eh, you've guessed it, usually me.
Well if last year was anything to go by, someone else will have to do my work now. Overdid it repairing the Nuffield, and never recovered. Old age really caught up. Ok if I can pace myself, have breaks or wait, but mustn't take on something I have to finish :( It sucks mate, however there's a lot of people younger than me that can't do as much so....just have to make the best of things.
I could see your frustration on this one...ive just got the cone for cv boots to stretch over...will have to upgrade to that air powered one..good stuff leon.
Really enjoyed watching this and got an insight to the job. However, the problems with alignment of the three inboard holes means that I prefer to approach the job another way. 1. Leave hub nut alone. 2. Remove the steering ball joint. 3. Break the ball joint using a thick bar between the nut and the outer CV joint knuckle, untightning the nut acts like a ball joint puller. 4. Lever down on the control arm (I used a pickaxe) and remove the ball joint from the hub carrier. Push the strut, hub, disc etc forward to allow control arm to come upwards and relax pressure on inboard end.
Just did a similar job tonight while replacing the driveshaft, exactly the same approach I took mate. Worked a treat to break the ball joint taper by backing the nut against a suitable socket to force it down, then two pieces of wood and a tapered piece hammered between did the rest.
My hand did slip off while using that double wrench method for the ball joint nut, leathered myself in the forehead so hard fairly sure I gave myself a concussion lol
I'm struggling with pushing the hub in. I've tried turning the disc and the other wheel turns OK. There is a small gap between the drive shaft where its jointed and turns and it won't go in any further. I've unbolted the steering joint and I still can't fit the ball joint, it just touching underneath before where it goes in. I've unbolted the wish bone with one bolt on its on not where anti roll bar any ideas would be helpful and if I can't finish it do you think I should get a Mobile mechanic?
Bet you can do that in 40 minutes with the camera off. Top bloke, our lass loves watching your videos. Got her to put the disc and caliper back on her X Type this afternoon. Wishbone and CV boot X Type. Passenger side to do next week. Not fiddley, but not as straight forward as it looks. Thanks for the upload.
Pulling that control arm out didn’t look too bad. but putting that joker back in looked like a pain in the ass. That was a slick tool which expanded the CV boot as I never seen one before. 😀👍
Perfect timing Leon, I’m doing track rod ends and ball joints on my mk4 next weekend. Not replacing a whole wishbone cos I’m a cheap ass. Better get a new wheel for me grinder.👍
I think I learned something today. You have some handy gadgets there my friend and if you swear enough it makes things work better..😂😂😂!! Great job!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
leigh shahan swearing makes everything better and goes in a lot easier it's just annoying when you have to go and pick up your tools that are 100 miles away from you as they bounce and bounce and bounce when you throw them lol
That's a crazy tool for the cv boot !! Straight out of the movie Alien 😂👍why didn't you leave the nut on the cv shaft off so as you lift the suspension it doesn't pull out of the.....never mind I see you just did that as I was typing lol
Hi mate there's no particular reason but you will need to make sure you've got enough room and be very careful with spring compressors I suppose it's possible I've just never done it that way myself
I like to split the cv joint apart in the partswasher and get all the balls cleaned and the cage, if there is grit in there its gonna fail sooner if you don’t. But i guess it all works out with a bit of luck,
hi which sensors would cause a no start , ie crank sensor faulty = no injector pulse. and so on would be nice if you do do a video on this topic regards tom
Tom williams hi mate unfortunately that's too broad of a question and really does depend on manufacturers for example I've seen an AC sensor fail and cause a car not to start pulling down the 5 volt reference it all depends on the car which shares common ground / references would be quite difficult to do a video as it might lead people into the wrong thing on their particular car
ive been looking for VW wiring diagrams , were would be a good place to find them ? i am actually looking for sensor to ecu wiring , golf mk5 tdi regards Tom
Thanks mate i see the ps pump at the front unless it is electrically assisted check the owners manual and it say the new green fluid and went to ford and they say the same they say i could demage the pump and seals in the rack if i decide to change the fluid how should i proceed?
Hi bodgit , I brok that bolt .It's outer cv joint hub bolt that snapped ( what you show on video), after I tighten at 80 degree. Wouldn't able to drive at all ?
You will have to replace the bolt with a new one make sure it's the correct one from Ford tighten it too Ford specification and you will be ok under no circumstances try and drive without doing this
Hey mate was just checking the ps fluid on my mk 4 mondeo while doing a service and noticed it has the red fluid in it but have been told that its the wrong fluid that newer fords use a green fluid is that correct? If so whats the best way to drain out the red fluid and replace it with the green?
What's the point in having steven if you throw all your tools on the floor. Have you tried the cone type cv boot tool. A Haynes manual wasn't made for my Toyota yaris so how would I get the torque settings.
Nonetheless, great vid. This is also valid for my Volvo V70 mk3 2014 as they almost have the same upset. A bad inner caster bushing really gives you a strange steering where people may think its the steering box
Can anyone else see the evil face on the caliper, it caught my attention and I couldn't help looking at it! You can see it from 10:30 once the parts are out the way
yeah sadly i didnt watch this video beforei bought mine. but the facelift model is better. for example: 07-11 turbo replacement= subframe off, 11-14: only drive shaft removal

Thanks a lot mate much appreciated I always keep everything in my video sometimes we all struggle this is not Hollywood this is real life
I really really really wish I found this video before I started doing this job myself, if I had known of the misery of it I wouldn't even have attempted it hahaha
Another day in the office...
Thank you for sharing!

Thomas EXOVCDS that's the problem of RUclips videos is always something you see and you want lol
I would rather watch you vidios anyday far better than anything on wheeler dealers or top gear keep them coming
James Doherty thanks mate
I thought the balljoint was gonna rip through that cv boot you just done.
Another good video.
Mark Williamson it was all under control lol

Any tips and tricks for a seized axle in the wheel hub?
Btw love your honest videos 👍👍 Cheers from Norway 😃

stuzman as you know whenever you break out the camera it's always harder the tool saves a lot of time work Smarter not harder mate as you well know
how do \i find that air tool for the boot replacement? Thank you for all your information that you share with us :)
Hi mate yes I find them really good they save a lot of time but you just have to make sure you use a special stretchy boots
@@bodgitandleggitgarage Thank you for that mate. And one more thing , where can I find that air tools wich strech the boot?
"Ooooh you shithead!" That was hilarious lol. Another quality bodgit production.
Good video as always do you have a video showing how to change the front wheel bearing and hub on mk4 mondeo
hi mate I do not but I have other videos I'm very similar cars doing the same thing
i have 2014 , and the inner cv won't go back in , any hints
Great vid
That's a lot of special tools for something you can do with a hammer and a screwdriver 🤣 nice job 👍
Badgertronix you just don't need to be in a tight ass breakout your wallet and buy some proper tools lol

The mech a nic hahahahhah
I like the spreader, always wondered how these are done.
Rob Billings yes mate they are really handy
Any reason why i cant use spring compressors.best vids on you tube
Hi mate there's no particular reason but you will need to make sure you've got enough room and be very careful with spring compressors I suppose it's possible I've just never done it that way myself
Did this today on my S max, what a nightmare. I found it best to leave the drive shaft disconnected from the hub, until the wishbone was back in.
Sorted glad you got it done mate
what was the fork spread?
It is always easy with things positioned right and a pleasure when it goes home. Where in the heck has Rob been?
I like to split the cv joint apart in the partswasher and get all the balls cleaned and the cage, if there is grit in there its gonna fail sooner if you don’t. But i guess it all works out with a bit of luck,

Sucks working with all those layers on, doesn't it?😆

Lesson learned - I will not buy a Mondeo MK4. Comparing this job to my Golf MK4 is just absurd.
