I found this video to be as real as it gets. Real struggle! Not candy coated where everything fits, goes in or comes off on the first attempt. It took some doing and the mechanic definitly earned his money. Thanks for showing like it really is.
Except it was done woefully wrong. Its not how its really done. A decent mechanic would either replace the whole axle or remove, strip and inspect it/repack it with grease. This was painful to watch and a good example of what not to do.
@@bEEBO178 so if u paid someone to do the axle boot and it looked like this, u wouldnt be able to tell the difference if he did it this way or took the axle out. Got the job done and didnt tear it. If hes ok doing this way without tearing the boot yay for him he still got it done

Yeah. I think in many cars if the cv axle is removed, you may spilled ATF fluid. I would't mess with that or seize anything. I think his job was awesome. Many bad comments.
So, I just successfully did this over the weekend. I have a few tips to anyone trying it. First, put a ton of oil on the cone--I had a half qt of some motor oil. I used a foam sponge and liberally! coated the cone. Then, coat the outside of the new rubber boot. Put the small end of the boot over the cone and pull the big end over, reversing the boot. The video shows this. This put the oily side of the boot on the inside. Then, use a heat gun on a lowish setting and CAREFULLY heat up the new boot, the oil and the cone. After its pretty warm, not hot enough to melt the boot or the cone, pull the boot down as far as you can a few times before you hold the cone up to the axle end. I think this works the oil into the boot. Put a little more oil around the very end of the cone (that's where the tightest area will be when the small end of the boot goes over the cone). Then, hold your cone up to the axle end. Give one big huge shove. My boot literally went up and over the plastic cone and onto the axle with a pop. I was pretty amazed. I think using a ton of oil and some heat is the key. Then, of course, clean off any oil that you can so the boot isn't all oily. I used a rag and some Dawn detergent--I didn't want to use brake parts cleaner on the rubber. Good luck!
Warm the boot put it in front of a electric heater or yer oven @ 175 degrees, yes sir , use Dawn dish soap for lube! Use dry gloves not ones covered in oil to pull down the boot.
Just tried put a new CV boot with this cone today, didn't work, I will replaced the CV joint and be happy, it's basically the easiest way to do this without suffering with this cone from hell. ✌️
Generally I agree with your comments and tips here, I have changed to lubricating the cone / new boot with silicone grease, it seems to work better for me. I do apply heat as that helps too.
I think this is pretty much the experience of all front drive DIYers - it's nice to see someone do a job start to finish with no issues on a set of ramps with all the tools BUT this video is far more realistic in terms of your average DIY job

as a car enthusiasts & a person who knows about mechanical things, you've done your job quite well. thanks for putting this here & sharing your knowledge whit us 😉👍🏻
Good video but from experience it easier just to tap off the CV with a hammer and put the new boot on without stretching it. Usually there is just a small circlip on the driveshaft to overcome. Alternatively on some cars with a hub bolt, just screw it back in to pop the CV.
He did everything correctly. Only a minor issue with the gaiter that it was a real struggle. Larger cone required and also too much man-handling of the gaiter can weaken it and cause it to split again. Otherwise really good video 👍 thanks 😊
Christ this really makes me want to never do a CV boot again, almost forgot how bad it was. Doesn’t look much easier with the cone tool, well maybe marginally. Thanks for showing how it is
Just doing this, using the 'cone method'(should be the cone of shame method) Had to remove the 'drift' shaft(drive shaft/Axle shaft) on my Seicento as I just couldn't get the leverage(I am weak, yes I know) so took it to my flat, put the kettle on, had brew and put the new rubber gaiter into some very hot water for a 'wee while'. Lubed up the cone and, after fu@#ing around for about 5 minutes on it popped. I tried this before on the car but the narrow end of the gaiter split!! (Don't ask) so hot water did help in my opinion and also using my thumbs pressed into the upturned end of the wide end of the gaiter... It isn't the easiest of jobs, more fiddly than technical... especially without a few tools(and maybe a vice to hold the shaft) but I am almost there...First things first, another cup of tea.....
The one thing that I can appreciate is, it's not so easy and it will take work getting those nuts off. Most videos make you think it's just as easy as 1 2 3 .
This video is well filmed and helpful BUT the axle ball joint should have been thoroughly cleaned (rugs and brake cleaner ) before repacking with grease and also you should have put some grease on the shaft splines before inserting it to the hub .I hope you degreased your rotor too ! Just some advice on good practices . (As far as the title goes this tool and procedure is cheap and doable , not easy.)
Excellent video, just one comment, this was made more difficult by allowing the new boot to go inside out on the cone. Grease the cone and push the boot onto the cone keeping it the right way around. Push the boot almost to the end of the cone before offering up to the drive shaft. The use of the plastic bottle is a fantastic idea if the cone is smaller than they’ve joint. Once in place push the boot off the end of the cone, the smaller end will snap onto the shaft and the boot will be the right way around and clean on the outside. Always made sure the joint is clean and re grease before fitting the boot and clamps.

Not sure what type of vehicle/axle this is, but I've replaced CV boots and axles on many different vehicles. In most cases, removal of the CV joint from the axle only requires snap ring pliers. Removal of the entire axle can be difficult on some vehicles, but on many it's as simple as prying the axle out or using a puller (rent for free at most big box auto parts stores).
It would have been easier to take the axle head of. He undone a lot of things that were a lot harder to undo. Plus stretching that boot that much, risk of braking it before it's on.
When I see how he loose a drive shaft knot and hit by hummer, I understood, he didn't fix car before. Never ever use your back muscle if possible use your weight or extension bar.
You can see his inexperience when he is torquing on the wheels when he should be applying the force downwards instead he is lifting up the torque wrench making his life harder. Just like undoing the axle nut it easier to apply force downwards by moving the breaker bar to rear of car instead of front car and lifting! It only takes me 15 minutes change the CV boot the cone method would gets lots of looks in the shop what are you doing?
Just remove the driveshaft, put the shaft in a vice. Cut off the old boot and compress/expand the circlip and tap the CV joint off the shaft. Clean up, re-grease and reassemble. Yes you lose a little gearbox oil but it's a lot easier than struggling like this!
Good grief man ! How many days were you out there in that cold weather ? Oh yeah now they have a fancy tool that opens the boot right up and slips the boot on without any struggling, it takes about 2 seconds , if you can afford the damn tool..
This cone method saves the removal of the joint from the shaft, but it seems to me that the extra effort is not worth it. You could just remove the joint and slip the new boot onto the shaft with ease, and avoid the risk of over-stretching the new boot causing crack.
actually... there's nothing wrong with him! mechanical things are harder than what they look like. not only mechanic of the car, but also almost all of mechanical works that exist.

it will be easier if you press down the braker bar or the tork wrench with your foot to loosen the nut or to tight it up . chrisfix says that hammer hit on ball joint and tie rod end can damage it. but if you hits on rigid metal is it ok?

Yes lightly pull the cv joint to you and with a neoprene hammer a couple good whacks towards you in the cv joint and it pops off. Putting it back on is just lining up the splines and a good push it snaps back on
The inner race is removable from the axle, so there's no reason to use that cone. The "universal boots" are more flexible, but less durable, so they won't last as (very) long. That means you bought a tool to more easily make a repair the wrong way, to ensure doing it again.

Kept it warm with a hairdryer so the glue would dry faster, maybe stronger?Using a split cv boot, you don't have to take anything apart except for removing the tire. Its been on my car for about a year now and I haven't had it split or anything. It was cheap too, I think it was about 22$. Fuck,I'd use Flex Tape before I did all that stuff. If I was going to put that much work in, I'd replace the whole thing.

Realized that this guy had no idea what he was doing when he pulled up on the hub/axle nut to get it loose. Flip the breaker bar 180 degrees and step on the bar. Use your body weight to push down instead of damaging your lower back to pull up.

Спасибо , интересно сколько проехал привод с установленным универсальным пыльником.
strange way to turn the axle nut, don't mind your back
Arse hole of a job -I feel your pain, I was out doing this in the drive before an MOT 😾
I guess this guy doesn't know that they sell split CV boots that glue together. I put one on my honda in about 20min.
Pushing down on the articulated wrench is easier than lifting it.
You should not push, always pull. That way if something slips you don't whack your knuckles
Many stresses with tis ruber,
Try another different way to make a change.
But You have a hard work.
In my country, we take off traction joint first, so make easily to replacement this boot.
think of all that lovely dirt that is now inside the new boot, priceless
If you find a bigger cone you don’t even have to take the wheel out
Brilliant. Made me lol 👍
I can hear a hard breathing from here...workload...
And someone will ask for a lift😁😁😁😁😁😁
great video people do they have to do to get some work done I prefer the car lift it's okward working at very low under cars.
fur
This video made me start drinking, i cud of went and bought a new cv joint shaft in half the time it took him to put this rubber boot on!!! And also put it all back together lol
Realized that this guy had no idea what he was doing when he pulled up on the hub/axle nut to get it loose. Flip the breaker bar 180 degrees and step on the bar. Use your body weight to push down instead of damaging your lower back to pull up.
