I began listening to his music in the 80's and I still enjoy it, but that is one of the smartest minute and twenty five seconds I've ever heard. I wish someone had told me that when I was 14, at the age when little things can make a big difference. Losing him so early was a big loss for the entire culture.
Decades later, I still enjoy a few things from English lit class in high school, but "The Real Frank Zappa Book" still occupies a space on the shelf, right next to "Animal Farm." Both are pretty good guides as to what you're going to see out there in the world.
I do not consider myself exceptional in any way mentally, however I related very much to the idea of "dumbing yourself down" to sort of blend in. When I was younger I always passed standardized tests with ease, but slacked off in class to fly under the radar. I don't like attention, and I certainly don't like being given praise that I feel is unwarranted. So I continued for years to, in a way, suppress myself. It changed me fundamentally, and it's a habit I'm still trying to shake off to this day. In a way, though. It's nice this way. I've found that by suppressing my natural reactions to things I give myself time to experience them in a different way. It can be eye opening, and can make you an easier going person.

Don't wanna sound like one of those shitty pseudo intellectual kids but it really struck me when he mentioned that you shouldn't dumb yourself down just to be friends with people. I've always wanted a friend who knew a lot so we can share information and have engaging conversations and further our talents but I have found 0 people like that. Instead I try my best to appease my school friends with dumb humor and admittedly I'm unhappy. It's made a definition of a friend incredibly superficial to me, it's just someone who hangs out with you, and that's obviously no real friend
