      @@willie8976 The difference is that, in terms of behavior, you look at the consequences of behaviors and decide if, as a society, you want those consequences, and if you don't, well, there needs to be some sort of agreement around what behaviors will be accepted and what behaviors will not.
      In terms of theology, it's just, "God says this, and God must be obeyed, so fuck what you want."

      @@willie8976 What types of behaviors are you referring to? Was someone harmed by these behaviors? In that case, the harm is a consequence, and that would be a useful function of legislation to mitigate or prevent that harm. Or are you referring to something else?

      It was disturbing to watch when it originally aired. Republicans were just as disgraceful, hateful and ignorant back than as they are now. It was disgusting and repulsive to see. That's why I stopped following politics in the 1980s and virtually all of American news media by the early 90s.
      They made fun of climate change activists back then also and news media went along with it.

    They asked him to give an example to back up his claims...and when he was calmly trying to state his case...they almost immediately tried to interrupt him. He spoke rationally and tolerated their childish jib jab...and still spoke with reason. What he said then is more true now. Look at the political and social context that (I can only speak of the US) we are in now.....Zappa was right. He thought clearly and genuinely on the matter. That's what is missing from today's leaders. "Bulls**t is the glue that holds together our society" Our "leaders" cannot level with us and talk to us like adults (let alone equals...which we are supposed to be!!!). Zappa was a true thinker and a should-have-been leader. He WAS a leader.

    Frank only had a high school education and spent most of his time working as a musician on tour and in a studio. These professional talking heads with their degrees and years of practice debating on camera were clearly unable to defeat Frank's clear headed positions on the role of government in censorship and moral codes.

      How is he right on the money? Truly. I am a Zappa fan and understand the urge to want to agree with him. In addition to being a creative legend, he is smart, calm and well spoken. However, Isn't the erosion of our culture today a product of underlying unifying values becoming obsolete in the face of total subjective individualism? It seems to me like the culture is in the toilet and it has nothing to due with some far right theological fascism. The root is far deeper and dare I say tied to our total lack of unifying values, theological or otherwise.

    Zappa was on top of his game that day. Lofton constantly tried to trip up Frank and Frank trumped him everytime and he did it with cool , clarity , and sarcasm. The complete version is a very interesting video.

    An intelligence so derided and scorned within his own lifetime, Frank Zappa's analysis here is not only spot-on, but it is precisely what has happened, 30 + years after this was taped. What we have is the fascism of capitalism and fundamentalist religion in this country run amok. And, I regret this works for all sorts of religions: witness the Hasidic Jewish community in Monsey, NY, and the Christian Fundamentalists wherever you look. Same disease, spread by two different hosts.

    He was positively prophetic. It's Problem (immorality) - Reaction (slow move toward legislating morality). We are almost at the door of a fascist theocracy. But it has been like the frog in the kettle. The heat is being turned up so slowly that the frog (the country) doesn't know it's being cooked to death.
