I like Frank's approach to politics. He was open minded and seemed to be able to see more than one point of view, and he wasn't bragging or trying to impress with his thoughts either. And he wasn't a hater-fundementalist type either, he viewed things independantly where most people would filter everything through their ideology. Modern day politics is like religion, and I hate that.
From the time I was about 12 years old I've been a fan of Frank Zappa. It was from listening to the Mothers of Invention (We're Only In It For The Money, Hot Ratz, Lumpy Gravy, and all the rest) that Zappa awakened me to poetry, literature, philosophy, even theology. I admire and owe a lot to this man. I was behind him, too, in his heroic battle against censorship in music. Thank you whoever you are for uploading this marvelous interview. I enjoyed it very much!
@@jamesroberts180 Yes, James Roberts. I often think the same regarding Christopher Hitchens who died several years ago of cancer. Though I was critical of his atheism I admired his insight in to political and religious current events. I wish he was still living to critique the politics of today.
@@TheSnoopindaweb Hey, you and I are probably similar in the way we grew up. I was born in 1954 - which makes me 70. I lived in a rural farming area in Southern Ontario, Canada. My parents managed to eke out a living. Two channels on the tv and a.m. radio. Funny how we still managed to keep up with what was going on in music. I really appreciate your comment, TheSnoopindaweb.
I've been a Zappa fan since the late sixties and it never hurt me none. Love the guy. We could use his voice in these troubled times. His early death was a terrible loss, both to the music community and to the country at large. He was onto something when talking about the problem with democracy being a disparity in education amongst the citizenry. However, I believe it is less about levels of education than it is the ability to resist indoctrination. Informed consent, the cornerstone of any democracy, can no longer be considered as informed. Instead, consent is manipulated, bought and paid for, manufactured by PR (propaganda) campaigns that prey upon people's emotions and gullibility. And the well-educated are not immune to this. Ideology, once it has taken root, is prior to rational thinking. It directs one's inquiries and "rationality" towards a predetermined outcome. The first step towards having a healthy democracy (and this is a big one) is to get money out of the process, to make sure that the candidate that wins is not merely the candidate who could best afford to flood the zone with the most bullshit. It seems that the first thing one hears from the media about a given candidate is how much money they've been able to raise. There is seldom any reporting on a candidate's theory of government or policy preferences. Everything is about the latest pissing contest, or about money. If this doesn't stop, our republican form of government is doomed. There is a way to accomplish this, but the political campaign industry has a lot to money, and is very well ensconced. They will fight like hell to keep anyone from killing the golden goose. By the way, I see that many of the comments here were posted many years ago. If yours is one of those, and you've since passed away, please shoot me a message. I could use some good advice.
You don't give politicians enough credit. The politician fully understands the truth, and how we might create a just society, but they take it and serve the interests of the few and present it as the solutions to the problems they create out of greed.

It doesn't take much imagination to think what Zappa's reaction to Trump's takeover of the Republican Party would have been. And a debate would have no doubt ended with his being attacked as evil or some such by Trump, a man to whom reason is a foreign concept.
We don’t have a choice. The choices are pre-selected for us, and whichever we choose the economy always serves the 1% while almost entirely ignoring the rest.
Frank refers to the republican party, but at this point he might as well be talking about both parties of today as there is virtually no difference and neither party represents any semblance of sanity anymore.
We really need a third party, the "Rational Party" that takes the best parts of both parties, i,e, shrink the big federal government and have fiscal responsibility incorporate social justice and tolerance for all races, gays, etc. from democrats, and impose term limits on members of congress. Once a politician gets to Washington all they are focused on is getting re-elected. It has created a ruling class. They will do and say whatever it takes to keep them in office. Term limits would help stop this way of thinking. Your state senator was not intended to remain in office as a full time job for 50+ years! It was designed as a part time position. We don't need 90 year old men making our laws and play one side against the other so we keep electing them! Trouble I see is your normal rational citizen has no interest to get caught up in a political circus with carnival freaks..
Scott Cohen I hear you, though there is one not inconsequential difference between the parties in that only one has joined forces with the reactionary religious right and kowtows to the Guns 'R Us crowd.
