- Part 6 of 7
This segment features Frank dissecting democracy. He reveals that 1 man 1 vote can be manipulated by the control of information that each voter receives. The information is controlled by the education system and the media. The media is controlled by corporations. Frank shows prescience in describing what was the Obama campaign's masterful manipulation of the media

It doesn't take much imagination to think what Zappa's reaction to Trump's takeover of the Republican Party would have been. And a debate would have no doubt ended with his being attacked as evil or some such by Trump, a man to whom reason is a foreign concept.
Anyone who lacks contempt for virtually every American politician isn’t paying attention or is complacently getting half or less of the story.
The popular vote disagrees with you apparently.
@@SpringwaterMusicStudio-23123 Really? 36% didn't vote. And tRump won the Popular vote by 1.6%, so what does that really say? Imo it says that at least 1/2 of 64% of us can't accept that we are in the same boat and 34% of us just don't care. Or it says nothing at all because we've all been duped. Did you even watch the clip?
@@SpringwaterMusicStudio-23123 The popular vote disagrees with what, exactly? Because to me it seems like a huge majority still is on the path that Zappa described here. Also that something is popular doesn’t equal it being ‘the right’ or ‘best’ thing. Besides that: majorities can still be wrong/uninformed.
@@Wizz15 The popular vote didn't fall for the fine people hoax at least.
We need you now Frank.

Zappa was a genius! He spoke yesterday about a problem still abhorrent today. I wish he was still alive today... just for his insight!
I like Frank's approach to politics. He was open minded and seemed to be able to see more than one point of view, and he wasn't bragging or trying to impress with his thoughts either. And he wasn't a hater-fundementalist type either, he viewed things independantly where most people would filter everything through their ideology.
Modern day politics is like religion, and I hate that.
🎯
I'm just now finding him and his music now. Wow.
@@CRASHxyhe seriously considered running for president before he found out he had cancer.
@@cmbells7736 I didn't know that thanks for the info. I'm catching up on interviews now so grateful there's some available. His basic no nonsense approach is strange to hear from an American as it is and has been they are wildly propagandized to not think for themselves.
@@CRASHxynever too late 👍🏻
From the time I was about 12 years old I've been a fan of Frank Zappa. It was from listening to the Mothers of Invention (We're Only In It For The Money, Hot Ratz, Lumpy Gravy, and all the rest) that Zappa awakened me to poetry, literature, philosophy, even theology. I admire and owe a lot to this man. I was behind him, too, in his heroic battle against censorship in music. Thank you whoever you are for uploading this marvelous interview. I enjoyed it very much!
God I would to hear what he would say about out times.
@@jamesroberts180 Yes, James Roberts. I often think the same regarding Christopher Hitchens who died several years ago of cancer. Though I was critical of his atheism I admired his insight in to political and religious current events. I wish he was still living to critique the politics of today.
Cool! - All I had at your age back when was an old3-tubee A.M. with the only station KOPR in Butte. Yup! G~G.
@@TheSnoopindaweb Hey, you and I are probably similar in the way we grew up. I was born in 1954 - which makes me 70. I lived in a rural farming area in Southern Ontario, Canada. My parents managed to eke out a living. Two channels on the tv and a.m. radio. Funny how we still managed to keep up with what was going on in music. I really appreciate your comment, TheSnoopindaweb.
I've been a Zappa fan since the late sixties and it never hurt me none. Love the guy. We could use his voice in these troubled times. His early death was a terrible loss, both to the music community and to the country at large.
He was onto something when talking about the problem with democracy being a disparity in education amongst the citizenry. However, I believe it is less about levels of education than it is the ability to resist indoctrination. Informed consent, the cornerstone of any democracy, can no longer be considered as informed. Instead, consent is manipulated, bought and paid for, manufactured by PR (propaganda) campaigns that prey upon people's emotions and gullibility. And the well-educated are not immune to this. Ideology, once it has taken root, is prior to rational thinking. It directs one's inquiries and "rationality" towards a predetermined outcome.
The first step towards having a healthy democracy (and this is a big one) is to get money out of the process, to make sure that the candidate that wins is not merely the candidate who could best afford to flood the zone with the most bullshit. It seems that the first thing one hears from the media about a given candidate is how much money they've been able to raise. There is seldom any reporting on a candidate's theory of government or policy preferences. Everything is about the latest pissing contest, or about money. If this doesn't stop, our republican form of government is doomed. There is a way to accomplish this, but the political campaign industry has a lot to money, and is very well ensconced. They will fight like hell to keep anyone from killing the golden goose.
By the way, I see that many of the comments here were posted many years ago. If yours is one of those, and you've since passed away, please shoot me a message. I could use some good advice.
I agree with you.
Not even a Master degree save you from being brainwashed or be the one who is brainwashing. Many in the guru sphere are the proof of that.
Are you dead? Advice for the afterlife?
We don’t have a choice. The choices are pre-selected for us, and whichever we choose the economy always serves the 1% while almost entirely ignoring the rest.
that's why we literally need a Revolution. Ban all money in politics. Politicians need to be there to work for the people and make our Country better. Instead all politicians are there to make things better for Corporations, Bankers, and of course Big Daddy Israel. IMO we don't have a Government anymore. We're being occupied by the ultra wealthy by a soft coup. Rockefeller nailed it back in the 19th century when he said "I don't need to run for office, the man who controls the money controls the Politicians". absolutely terrifying!
Hail the prophet Zappa who foresaw the coming of the Boeberts & MTGs.
You don't also think he foresaw Biden, Harris etc.? Just the ones you disagree with?
I wish he had been here to push the vaccine and defend trans kids
@@edbernardmusic3599 Frank would likely have found Biden merely disappointing, but found Boebert, MTG, and their golden calf Trump, viscerally disgusting.
There were the same kind of people around then. People were just smart enough to see through them.
@@edbernardmusic3599not really... It's pretty stark difference between them trying to advocate for things that help the people versus Trump who only serves himself. Trump embodies everything Zappa was against.
Great interview. He's too logical for politicians to understand.
You don't give politicians enough credit. The politician fully understands the truth, and how we might create a just society, but they take it and serve the interests of the few and present it as the solutions to the problems they create out of greed.
Oh, they get it!!! Otherwise we wouldn't be seeing such a wave of 1940s Nazis crap all over the place.
I watched this out of curiosity. I am impressed with the depth of his knowledge about world affairs.I grieve over all the wasted treasure in pursuing weapons development in the U.S. while sacrificing meeting the needs of our citizens.

"When you think you have the moral high ground you are in a dangerous place"
Education is not about college education, but to educate yourself about things what is happening and what you are voting for or against. To educate yourself you need to have people who are telling you what is happening, without manipulation and lies. A system where truth matters and manipulation is not the most acceptable constant.
A system where narcissism is not a competition who can do it better, but ppl have awareness how costly it is to them not just emotionally, but any other way.
There you go Mr. Zappa. You are thinking again. You know we don't do that in America.
He's saying a lot of stupid stuff for somebody who is allegedly thinking.
Mak Muk Could you translate that statement into English?
Stuey apStuey Get Educated Stuey. Maybe you'll understand better!
Get educated he says. Why are these trolls on every single video I try to watch they obviously don't like Frank Zappa they are just here to try and stir up the crazy.

Brilliant Musician, so far ahead of his time, RIP Frank, you were the real deal, in our so-called Democracy a voice of reason and a scary view of the pay to play govt.
I'm going to use that one Frank thank you.. you're a genius candy-coated dictatorship.. he was right about everything.. period... Don't you eat that yellow snow..
still one of my few heroes
Very timely to put his insight and wisdom back in the spotlight. This coming from him at a time when he knew he had throat cancer and that his days were numbered
For democracy to work, education has to be equal - so simple and so true. Today, you have to add: you need information to be unbiased so voters can make up their minds unpolluted by propaganda and lies.
@8:00 Influence peddling is where a dollar donated equals so many points toward your career as a politician. How then can you have confidence in the government anymore, and then you look at the media, and they just look the other way.
the noam chomsky of rock
i fail to fucking fathom how chomsky is the first fucking person you think of comparing zappa to when zappa openly believes in capitalism and chomsky is an anarchist like how did you come to this conclusion???
It's scary how prescient so many of the things Frank Zappa says are!
He is SO missed.
Lucky to see him in Brum 1988

Frank was the man who put it intelligently and clearly.
We still have John Trudell and people like him.

"Watch out where the Republicans go and don't you eat that yellow snow".
It's scary to listen to this and think about today's soulless party music.
It's scary to listen to this and think about how alot of shit is in the world today.
Frank refers to the republican party, but at this point he might as well be talking about both parties of today as there is virtually no difference and neither party represents any semblance of sanity anymore.
I don't get the emphasis on "Cohen." Is it an antisemetic thing? Anyway, Scott's right about the two party system.
they both represent the interests of the ruling class, that's about it
We really need a third party, the "Rational Party" that takes the best parts of both parties, i,e, shrink the big federal government and have fiscal responsibility incorporate social justice and tolerance for all races, gays, etc. from democrats, and impose term limits on members of congress. Once a politician gets to Washington all they are focused on is getting re-elected. It has created a ruling class. They will do and say whatever it takes to keep them in office. Term limits would help stop this way of thinking. Your state senator was not intended to remain in office as a full time job for 50+ years! It was designed as a part time position. We don't need 90 year old men making our laws and play one side against the other so we keep electing them! Trouble I see is your normal rational citizen has no interest to get caught up in a political circus with carnival freaks..
Scott Cohen I hear you, though there is one not inconsequential difference between the parties in that only one has joined forces with the reactionary religious right and kowtows to the Guns 'R Us crowd.
ya sound like a snowflake for sure
Frank and George speak facts. FACTS " THEY" do not want shared !
People do not pay attention. Robert Riech is another great man. Jeffery Sachs another one thats telling you the true FACTS!!
Always nice to see a public figure like Zappa ,who say's it like it is without concern for their own personal benefit. What he'd say Now.....I can only imagine. Ha....Imagine having a George Carlin , Frank Zappa as oval office inhabitants ...:)
I suspect that Zappa would do a pretty good job. While I'm a fan, I don't think that Carlin had the deep understanding of the system that Zappa demonstrated.
For Secretary of State I nominate Bill Hicks.
What kind of reasoning could possibly be behind making a plastic card with the text "I am a member of the republican party", except corruption? Frank is right on as usual.
The most intelligent musician !
The problem with democracy is ignorant voters and the nonstatesmen they elect. Voting should require passing a literacy test, one that reveals understanding of US history, science, and the arts. Those who don't pass the test should stay home, insert their binky, and zone out to their TV.
I love the dramatic zoom in on his face at the end
What's with the publisher's notes? It says " Frank shows prescience in describing what was the Obama campaign's manipulation of the media".
Given that virtually his entire discussion was specifically directed at republicans, and given that Zappa died over 15 years before Obama became president (1993, vs. 2009), this claim of prescience seem unfounded, even in 2009, let alone in light of the republican's MAGA mania.
And frank explains how Trump even became a candidate much less win, and why Trump love the uneducated! I loved his way of thinking 🤔 💙
The final zoom in and out is just an anachronistic meme that never had the chance to go viral at the time
Frank.I love you,you will be remembered, you said it didn't matter how or if people remembered you...but you knew everyone would! i think you meant that, you won't be here so in that respect it doesn't matter, your right! But you knew the world would continue without you and all your efforts and things you loved to do for money, fun whatever your art, your talent your attitude, your intelligence is loved by so many and will be remembered and honored and appreciated etc. for all time.Thank you!
FRANK ...........what you say, Echo's in history!.............You are such a smart human..........I'm humbled listening to you
That camera movement at the end may have been unintentional, but it sure as hell expresses how it feels to hear someone say these things...

Love Frank Zappa
If only him instead of the Trump meister
Some of this describes the horrors of Trumplandia perfectly.
It describes every presidency. But I guess singling out Trump is an easy path to popularity these days
Prophetic
Frank was right about the US becoming a theocratic dictatorship. Fortunately he was wrong about censorship. The 3 Deadpool movies proved his statement wrong. and anything can be found on the internet, for anyone to find, including every musician on the planet.
There are many in our government who would like to change that. As far as music, its not as great as you think. Sure, its maybe out there, but corporations and billionaires have gotten their hands on the algorithms and now they favor whatever they choose to push. Things are very dystopian, and they have been for some time. People are just now waking up to the fact.
Identifying a risk isn't the same as saying it's a certainty. That's a straw man fallacy.
Frank was a genius and a prophet, there are more Franks and they need to step up. I'm here in NZ watching the agony in the US now, that Frank accurately predicted. Greed over the money is the chief issue. You need leaders that will reject greed, reject lobbying, reject the corrupt old boys club of puritanical patriarchy. You can do this, it is within your capabilities
Frank must be rolling in his grave now.
And the beat goes on
If ever there were modern day prophets. It was Frank Zappa, and George Carlin.
We need people like Frank Zappa and George Carlin around to run circles around Trump for calling out all his constant B.S. wake up!
I'm downloading this.
Ok, I see what you mean.

RUclips doesn't support videos longer than 10 minutes for most channels. That's way the interview is broken up in parts.
Frank Zappa... Best poker stare EVER!!!! LOL.
You don't. The L party approached him about a campaign for POTUS and he rejected them, reporting that their platform made no sense, and giving examples.

It's funny, I've never heard Zappa make the statement about the Emperors clothes but I have been saying for some time that all that we claim in this country to be democracy or freedom is the Emperors New Clothes.
Shame that just enough people didn't wake up when F. Z said this for nearly 40 years ago! But it is not to late wakenig up and never ever give up because freedom is essential to the world right now!!
He wouldnt have been a Trump Fan thats for sure.
Why? How is Trump different?
@@mr.horrorchild4094 Trump is a theocratic fascist. Frank Zappa predicted that it would take over America and with Trump it now has.
Hint: Zappa didn't like theocratic fascism so much.
@hpw59 "Constitutional Republic" is a recent replacement for the phrase "democratic republic," a republic where our leaders are nominally chosen by citizens and who govern with their consent, although historically these elections have been manipulated in various ways. In the interview, FZ does not make a claim that this is a democratic state -- he is talking about democracy as a concept and an ideal.
I don't really think it matters who wins the elections when the lobbies are in control of the legislature. The overwhelming majority of the American people always loses, so what f****** good is our great Constitution??????
