I have a 2006 GTO that the vinyl on the air bag/horn part of the steering wheel was very sticky and melting. I tried the bug and tar remover and that worked! For those reading this, keep in mind it requires a lot of rubbing just as the author of the video describes. Thanks for sharing this info!
Thank you! Thank you for the idea and for posting this! I had scraped one small edge while sitting waiting one day, and saw how nice that turned out, so I tried a bigger area (dry) in front and made a real mess. Fortunately I found your video soon after and now my 2000 Maxima accessory panel in the front of the dash looks like new again! So smooth and even! Unbelievable (and weird that you would think of Bug remover...) and I didn't have to take the car apart! It took awhile like you said. I switched to a flat green scrub pad as there are many narrow areas in my car. I wish I had thought to take before photo, but it was a sticky scarred up mess! Maxine is looking better with age!
You are genius. I used Turtle Wax Bug & Tar remover (aerosol) on my 2007 Maserati Quattroporte. Dealership said nothing could be done. Spray it on, leave it on 3 minutes and used terrycloth/microfibre throw away shop rags. Absolutely works. Lot more to do but did a fair bit in less than an hour.
Cheers for the video mate! Got this problem in my '00 VW Beetle, aside from the fact it's sticky it shows every single little scratch on the surface. Seems like this will be a job for a lazy Saturday with a 12-pack of tinnies to get through.
Yes, I had it on my '04 Beetle and now my '09 GTI. I never put Armorall brand protectant on them again, that made it instantly sticky too. Something with that VW plastic in the heat.
Tried this and it worked perfectly on my 03 Sorento. Was able to sell the car with no worries about the dash condition. Don't ask me about the rest of the car!
We just purchased a 2003 VW Beetle, the condition of the dash looked very similar to the one in the clip. We tried several products that didn't make a significant difference until we tried a product called Awesome. My wife wiped small section at a time using a old t-shirt, nothing abrasive. After about 10-15 minutes of work that center section above and around the radio was completely clean of stickiness. Still black, no noticable difference in the color of the plastic. I tried it on the interior drivers door pull handle, same results. The stuff worked great, better than I ever expected. For those in the states she bought it in the Dollar Store, cheap and effective cleaner.
Dave Hogan I just used this product last night on my 2002 Honda Accord and I do not recommend it. Yes it took off all the sticky but it also faded the black plastic.
I was skeptical, but dang...it worked! You do want to make sure car isn’t in full sun while doing this and it does take time and elbow grease, but it’s worth the work and I picked up a can at a local discount auto place for just $5.99.
Thank you sooo much. My daughters Hyundai Getz dash is a mess and it has been driving me crazy (not her obviously!) I am off to Super Cheap Auto to get some today and give it a go. So glad you are an Aussie contributor as well. Most youtubers are American and you cannot get the products. Once again thank you for posting this one. 👍🏼
Other videos I've seen suggested sticky goo/glue remover. I tried that but it evaporates and absorbs super fast and you have to use heaps on one section and it's still sticky. I'm going to pick up some of this to try this week 👍
Thanks for this video. The bug & tar remover didn't work for me for my issue but 1 of the comments here said to use acetone (nail polish remover) & that worked perfectly.
I have a BMW X7 with the same problem...and it is not from the sun, my X7 is always parked in a garage. I think it has something to do with the high humidity...it also happens to my headphones, and foam rubber. Thanks for the tip, I don't think we have that brand of tar remover here in S. Africa, but I will look for an equivalent.
Purple power engine degreaser work for removing the rubber. I have a polisher that the handles became that way. use of the purple power removed it almost instantly by melting the rubber more to remove it which is what is happening here with the bug and tar remover. I imagine if you wanted to keep it looking good and prevent it from occurring I tire wet might work.
I'm guessing this is some type of rubber coating they put on for looks and feel when the vehicle is brand new, and it breaks down chemically over time. I think the same thing happens to some types of electronic devices too covered in this coating.
I had the same problem and tried many ways... didn't work... But.....I got it fixed later as follows: I used protective coating (semi-paint black color) this material chemically some how interact with the material and the melting stopped. After that I used painting matching the color and it worked. For my case it was the passenger soft dash problem.
im perosnally looking into spraying my dash with some plastidip or similar product. If its good enough for a hot metal car exterior, it should be fine inside.
Fucking brilliant, mate! Worked like a dream on my '05 VW. Interior looked overly dry afterwards but leather milk and a quick buff has it looking new again. Cheers!
Update: I still had a slight sticky surface in some spots. Plus I developed a white film in another. I used Tea Tree Oil and that polished off the job. Now it's like brand new.
Trying this idea with my 2009 Toyota Camry. Bought used like this and thought is was just some cleaner they put on, but never got any better. Did one application and most of the sticky has gone, but will see how it does in the Alabama heat tomorrow.
onya champ just touched my camry dash and it was like toffee with dog hair thrown in. sifted through a heap of yank ones till i found yours. ..top stuff
hi, I notice you posted this Nov 2013. Could you please tell me if your dashboard has continued to stay unsticky (sorry, I know this isn't a word, but I couldn't think of the correct one) or if you've had to repeat the process, or maintain it with something else?
We're taking ours back to the dealer to be replaced free. There is also some safety issues with this problem, I don't think I would just clean it and trust it.
My owners manual says to clean dash and plastic with a water damped cloth. No products! I have bought a dash mat too. Good luck this is a major problem!
this kinda helped but I think the car is too far gone so I have tried everything and nothing has gotten rid of the sticky crap so we are going to have to buy a cover
Toyota replaces the dash for free but will it melt again? Do they address the root of the problem. What is causing the problem? Dash lightbulbs that are too hot or what?
Someone told me it's the chemicals they use to make the plastic that it gets hot. I have a 2000 camry and I'm going to keep it until it falls apart or I do. I'm sure it'll outlive me. Ha! It's like new, well taken care of and only 170,000 miles. I have read consumers say the new ones aren't built like the old ones. A shame. They should've gotten better not worse.
Theres no ifs and buts, just wrong use of materials in a cheap-o car. This shit should get fixed for free at a dealership seeing its a clear manufacturing fault. Unless the video maker spilled oil all over it, which may cause certain plastics to "melt" slowly.
It's not heat related. I've seen this problem with many "rubberized" plastics that were never exposed to heat. It's a thin rubber-like coating they put on the plastic to give it that smooth look with a nice soft touch. I'm not sure why it sometimes starts getting sticky. Perhaps a chemical reaction between the plastic and coating?
MICHAEL DAVIS thanks for the feedback but toyota claims only certain vin numbers fall into the replacement extension the program is call extended z26 we should fight back but thanks for the video and tips!!
Does anyone know if this works on the Camry's dash? I have a 2007 which I just bought. I initially thought the seller had just gone crazy with shiny armor-all but... surprise! It's got the sticky dash syndrome. I had no idea this was even a problem.
@@pdab4372 Yes. It did not work. I ended up buying a injection-molded cover that went right on til of the dash. It did what it was supposed to but wouldn't recommend it on a nice looking car....I did not care since it was my beater for commuting
I will have to try this on my 2009 Altima. I hope I can find this product in the States. I figured it is really hot Australia. I feel as though you have to know how to solve this problem for sure down under.
***** I stay in Dubai. From where can I buy this? any idea? Are you having any official website for this item? I'll internationally ship it. Thanks. Please reply at pearlgtuae@gmail.com

Shelby Steele Not to remove the stickyness of the plastic. Instead I got this suade dash cover: www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0048FSWIU/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It doesn't look bad at all and fits nice. Just check to see if they it for your car

I tried this method on a pair of binoculars with decomposing rubber and it worked great.
Thanks!
Thanks mate! I've got a 2003 Jetta with this same problem. It made sense as soon as you showed the Bug and Tar remover. Cheers!

Thank you for this video! I hope it will work on my curling iron handle that is tacky and sticky.
Worked beautifully for me on my 2008 Toyota Camry. Thank you!
mine didn't work still so sticky I think this dash board is too far gone we are gonna have to get a cover :(
my ocd is really pissed off because you didnt show the whole thing finished. thanks alot mate
korzer sorry about that I'll post a picture it looks fantastic.
Thank you so much for your suggestion! I hope it works!
thanks man I'll try this to get rid of the sticky dashboard

Pulsate wtf? Your dash will fade off
Oxy clean or make a baking soda paste

Lovely job, the heat and humidity is not kind to my VW's interior. All my radio knobs have gone sticky like my Beetle's dashboard did.

I have an 03 Kia Sorento with the same problem. Tried several solvents without much luck, I will try your trick tomorrow. Thanks!
Did this work for you?
I have a Kia Soul with a very sticky dash it is a hair magnet. I am curious if this worked for you.
How warm does the dash have to be for the bug n' tar cleaner to work?
Thanks for this info.... Volkswagen Jetta with sticky dash, and wife's curling iron. I will follow up if it fails.
cheers from Philadelphia.
Soooo.... Everything allright mate?
Hi, can you spray the bug and tar remover on the steering wheel which have controls on it.
Thanks,Anita Sanino
Nice gonna try it out and hope it works.
Got the dash sticky on a lexus IS 200 from 2001 :)
Where did you get this bug and tar remover from. I'm having trouble finding it.

gen could you tell where you bought the bug n tar remover is that i been at the auto parts and online and i cant find it.
i got some at a target. its in the car stuff
This worked on the sticky parts of the dash but actually melted the different type of plastic on the next dash panel on my '04 Getz
Thanks a lot!!💪😁
Update: I still had a slight sticky surface in some spots. Plus I developed a white film in another. I used Tea Tree Oil and that polished off the job. Now it's like brand new.
Derryl Gabel Thanks i will try the tea tree oil 👍🏾
Does it work on 2008 Toyota Camry dash?
hi I'm trying this at the moment, sprayed it on and left for a minute the rubbed off, didnt work. Do I need to do it more than once?
Worked great for my 2005 vw beetle convertible! I used a turtle wax branded trigger spray.
I used Turtle Wax Bug & Tar aerosol and had great results.
Having the same issue in my 06 convertible!! Thank you love. Im making a protector for the dash after I complete this process
isopropyl alcohol works good too!
Trying this idea with my 2009 Toyota Camry. Bought used like this and thought is was just some cleaner they put on, but never got any better. Did one application and most of the sticky has gone, but will see how it does in the Alabama heat tomorrow.
Did it work on your 2009 Toyota Camry?
How did your Camry hold up? I just bought a 2007 Camry and also thought they just went crazy with a cleaner. I didn't know this was an issue.
Any chance of getting an update? I also have a 2009 Camry and looking for a solution.
Good video. I think any organic solvent should do the job (isopropyl alcohol/white spirit).
Would this work on rubber dash?
Where can I get this product?
Better to have a hard plastic dash than a sticky, messy, and soft one
Good news Gen 👍
onya champ just touched my camry dash and it was like toffee with dog hair thrown in. sifted through a heap of yank ones till i found yours. ..top stuff
Haaaaaaaaaaa ... wow that's awesome...I'll do mine it's been a pain in the ass xxx
Thanks 👍💪👌

Hi Rose after I used the Bug & Tar remover the sticky was completely gone.
And the dashboard still looks good 👌
Not everywhere for the product sale. alright?
Arm & Hammer washing soda works.
How about a sealer?
where u buy it
What about something made from rubber that just keeps melting? It's 40 years old, why does it melt?
Nice one
We're taking ours back to the dealer to be replaced free. There is also some safety issues with this problem, I don't think I would just clean it and trust it.

Anita Sanino go to my channel I made a tutorial
Acetone worked well for my friend.
this kinda helped but I think the car is too far gone so I have tried everything and nothing has gotten rid of the sticky crap so we are going to have to buy a cover
Will "Stoner Car Care Tarminator Bug, Tar, Sap, and Grease Remover" do the same thing? I can't seem to find the product you are using.
Sounds like it would be ok.
maybe try an obscure section to check?
nannasbodyguard Thank You
nannasbodyguard bro what about tuff stuff, would it work?, i have a mazda 3 and the dash is all sticky on top
Exact same problem on my 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe
the melting can damage the car and make it look nasty........wondering why the car maker don't use silicone
at least we still have the radio

Do not under any circumstance use acetone around plastic! It will turn it nasty white.

You can buy it at any Auto store/shop I believe.
