  • If there was one thing I needed to fix on 2014 Jaguar F-Type S, it was the sticky buttons. Sticky buttons are common in early 2000s luxury cars, the switches are coated in a soft touch coating that breaks down overtime and becomes a nasty sticky goo. I searched for how to fix this and ended up with a bunch of different ideas to try out. Today we're going to buy all those things (even though you probably already have all these common items sitting around your house) and test them. No matter what happens you'll need very little of any chemical or make up wipes to get the entire car cleaned up.
The Ferrari guys recommend refinishing their switches with Testors Dullcote to protect them after removing the coating with IPA.

What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make RUclips videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo

Lighter fluid will solve all of the pesky Jaguar problems. About a gallon of it applied liberally around the interior followed by a match and all of your Jaguar problems are gone.

It's basically the rubber coating that has lost its vulcanization. Alcohol works, as does Windex and Goo Gone. I've found that a melamine sponge (i.e. magic eraser) helps in scrubbing.

Like other problems in life, alcohol is the fix.
Iso alcohol is also great for tree sap! Let it dwell for 15-20 seconds on the sap spot and then wipe with the rag, it will often just melt the sap off.

I'd try mixing the isopropanol 70/30 with distilled water to avoid paint coming off. I used >99% isopropanol on my Volvo buttons and it did take some paint off the corner of one button but that's about it, everything else cleaned up perfectly. Might have even been missing paint in the first place from use over the years, just covered up by goop.

I noticed you had the gen 1 ftype like I have.
Word of advice-the buttons on the steering wheel are dreadful and we're amended on the 2015 ftype to be contoured rather than flat. The flat ones are really difficult to press and register a button press.
You can't switch the entire button assembly out because the circuit board on the button is different - but you can swap the button plastics over and the new moulding is angled enough to register the button presses.

Simple Green maximum spray degreaser. I just did it 5 minutes before I typed this message. Took all the stickiness right off without being abrasive. Everything came off like hot butter, no scrubbing. BUT!, You need to have a few towels because that sticky stuff sticks to the towel and if you don't turn and change your towel, you end up wiping the sticky residue back on. Oh, and please use a towel that's clean and not all frayed and stuff. Used it on my 2014 Jaguar XJL Portfolio V6 supercharged 😇.

I tried alcohol, adhesive remover, etc. with some success but not great. I then tried some spray on Resolve carpet cleaner, and it worked like a charm. I would recommend wearing gloves though if you try it. After a few hours of constant exposure it dried out and chapped my hands like crazy.

The 91% Isopropyl alcohol worked wonders! THANK YOU!!!!! One thing I can recommend though, use a very wet towel and rub GENTLY then repeat with a fresh piece of towel, as it will just smear if you don't use a fresh piece of towel each time. More alcohol & les pressure is the key. I rubbed through the paint in a couple spots on my steering wheel buttons. Now I have to swap those switches out.

For larger surface areas such as gooey dashboards or airbag covers, carefully/perfectly clean with 90% or higher IPA, 2 square inches at a time, and then coat with a product called "PCR Plastic Renew". The coating is a perfect way to make the plastic new again. Holds up for years when done properly and will not wash off. PCR plastic renew is not a "dressing" but an actual flexible plastic coating.

@@WatchJRGo was actually on a remote but when I was searching for a cure to the sticky buttons everyone was saying they used this on sticky car buttons. I have used it on a few items with sticky rubber. Hard to get up here in Canada but it works great on glass too. Go figure lol!

Don't have this specific problem with any vehicles I deal with, but I have found glass cleaner a safe way to clean random things where you are unsure of the best approach.

Second on the Sprayway. Remotes, electronics, toys, and other stuff with the crappy soft-touch used from 1997-ish to 2013-ish…

Sprayway is denatured alcohol, which is very similar to the ISO alcohol JR used

This may or may not apply but you can try and use the cheap blue mouthwash to remove the residue. In the IT world I used it to remove the delaminating coating on Macbook screens. It works really well.

You need to use a thinner cloth or just one layer of your cloth to get into tighter areas. I thought you would start using cotton swabs or ear swabs.

I bet that your new shop is going to have the best air conditioning system out of all of the shops on RUclips.
My car doesn't have the sticky button problem but the last time I got it detailed the person used a mix of alcohol and distilled water in a spray bottle and he sprayed it all over the surfaces and knobs and buttons and it did a great job and evaporated quickly. The headlight/turn signal stalk had brown icky stuff dripping out of the seams when he sprayed it down. The old stock stereo was nasty too. The only issue I saw is that it left some of the black plastics a hazy gray color but the black can be restored during the detailing process.

I did the alcohol treatment with an old set of headphones I loved but were absolutely sticky all over. They were so far gone I also had to use a small amount of baking soda, although I would not recommend that with painted plastic like you had to deal with. I would suspect that Alcohol is also safer to use around electrical components.

I always used armoral wipes, they work and should protect the buttons a bit as well. I have seen some paint loss/white spots on older cars from the 90s that had crazy amounts of stickiness.

Also wiping things down with armor all or something similar will help keep the buttons from fading etc

Oh don’t worry mate, I know you’ve never bought hand lotion before 😂… I tried the alcohol option on a black Walkman’s remote control and it did take the goo off, but it burnt the plastic and left it with a white-ish haze/cloudiness. I tried the remote control first so that I wouldn’t ruin the Walkman itself, which is a high-end Sony Walkman from Japan with full-logic mechanism. I guess I will try the makeup remover wipes on it to be on the safe side, I read somewhere that a paste of water and baking soda could work too, have you tried it by any chance? Anyway, great video, thanks for sharing 😊

I’ve used denatured alcohol for button/control cleaning, doing test areas is very important, some covering is chemical sensitive.👍

This problem is very much alive and well in 2022 - a LOT of vehicles have soft-touch materials that will degrade quickly. My 2017 SantaFe had soft touch plastics that were already degrading in 2021!

It is more likely that nail polish remover wipes (non acetone) will work best, However they may be a bit aggressive,

I get this with computer plastics sometimes. I use WD40 to clean off all the broken down plastic on the surface ( that is sticky ) and then clean well with ISO 91% to clean up the WD40 residue.

I'll give it a try. I have an old MS force feedback 2 joystick that has gone very sticky, but annoyingly is still the finest joystick ever made, alcohol just seems to make the problem worse and vigorous cleaning just led to the coating peeling off. I'll try wd40. Failing that I'll just strip the sticky coating off completely and wrap the thing in bicycle handlebar wrap.
My jag is a x100 so has 99 problems but sticky buttons aren't one lol thank fck

@@throwback19841 if the WD40 and 91% ISO doesn't work all the way, I use clear nail polish to cover over the parts and it stops the sticky and doesn't wear off. I have done that with a few dslr cameras where the grip gets all soft and sticky. WD40, 91% ISO and then clear NP on top fixes it. I still have an old Nikon D70 I did it to maybe 5 or 6 years ago that is still holding up just fine.

Fretboard 65 works great, just takes a lot of patience. You cover the button with it, let it sit for a minute or two and wipe off. I’ve used it with a ton of success.

“Simple green “ works and is a little less scary… I had good results on an 06 Maserati gransport with it. The seat backs were a huge issues in the car and a concentrated dose of simple green stripped them and allowed me to wrap them.
