  • This video will show you how to remove the sticky residue from your cars buttons. This is the easiest, fastest, and safest way and can be done for less than $8 at your local Walgreens.
    Keep in mind that some buttons will require elbow grease but be careful as doing it too hard might erode the lettering. You need to apply the right amount of pressure.

    I haven't looked thru the comments to see if anyone suggested this, but if you want to save a few dollars, Walmart has the same wipes in a travel size for $1. It's somewhere near the aisle with combs/brushes/hair ties. I actually use these for makeup removers, but also to remove sticky residue from my skin whenever I work in my garage. You can use them like goo-gone and it won't dry your skin out.
    Appreciate the video! I have a sticky car button and already have these wipes, so I'm set!

      I'll try this, and others have suggested Turtle Wax Wheel and Tire Cleaner.

    • @tonyelleevans3322
      @tonyelleevans3322 Год назад

      @@davidjacobs8558 Try taking the makeup remover wipe and dampening or wetting a q-tip with it (you can add a drop of water to help, but just a drop or 2 because you don't want to dilute the product) and really try to get in those edges. You can also use a safety pin if you're careful. I'd guess if no suggestions are helping you, then you probably have gunk really built up under your buttons. Maybe you could get the makeup remover in the bottle and make a spray with it to get it in and under there. Just a thought... or three. Lol

    Great video thanks, I just bought some goo gone based on another vid but like the wipes idea so much more, far less messy. Some have commented about how it will eventually happen again, but I dont think so. It is a factory applied coating which eventually breaks down due to sun and sweaty hands etc, once it is removed I assume that will be the end of it as the buttons underneath are just hard plastic and there will be nothing left to melt.

    • @XJLuxury
      @XJLuxury  2 года назад +2

      You are correct. Once the top layer of protectant is off it won’t happen again. You will just eventually erode the text off the button over time.

      Just a quick update on my experiences with this process. Ok so I bought 25 cheapo makeup removing wipes from Sainsburys for 50p. Worked perfectly though it took around 6~8 wipes for each side of my steering wheel as they quickly dry out. Tips: dont rub too hard, apply light to medium pressure, wiping in same direction using finger nails is good to gently scrape the sticky gummy mess away. Took me approx 40mins to clean up whole steering wheel with 8 buttons. Looks like new now. Very happy.

    An all purpose degreaser (we use Red Power) with a microfiber towel works far better and DOES NOT affect the white decals at all (totally safe). If your buttons are super sticky, use an alcohol prep pad to break up the initial residue, then proceed with the degreaser. I have a couple of remote controls and a pair of rayaban sunglasses that suffered the same fate. I think it is due to a combination of heat, humidity, and UV exposure. Heat and humidity are probably the worst ones. Japanese cars don’t use this finish reason why my wife’s Toyota even 15 years later never had sticky buttons.

II ended up having to use acetone on certain areas which brought its own set of unique problems. I used the acetone on the steering wheel areas. Much of the panel areas on the door and the console I'm going to repaint with flat black fabric and plastic paint, so lightly sanding these areas will be okay since the discoloration of the surface due to the acetone and the sanding will be covered by the paint. I used 400 grit first then 800 on the plastic areas

    I think is also worth to know as to why this is happening... since preventing from happening is more important...
    The sticky part is actually a rubberized coating that is being applied to the buttons. This is what gives your buttons that rubbery non slippery feeling. In time, depending on how you take care of your interior and how hot the area you are in is, this coating is degrading and becomes this sticky gooey thing.
    Always clean the interior of your car and apply protective coats to help with avoiding this situation.
    If you are in this situation, then yes, use this method...
    However, DO NOT use this if your buttons are OK, thinking that it will help... these chemicals that are in the wipes are actually helping with degrading that protective coat!

      Also, sometimes the buttons are actually made from transparent white or red plastic (like the warning light button), which get's the light pass through. So you must go gently with those, because there's a black paint over that plastic and you could remove it too... also once you remove that rubber coat it will be very delicate and prone to scratches.

    Wonder how long before it returns? Based on the composition of the material in my experience (Porsche) you can clean it, and it's good for a time, but then the material breaks down more and gets sticky again. It's not about dirt or use. Thanks, seems like a gentle enough cleaner.

    • @XJLuxury
      @XJLuxury  4 года назад +3

      In my opinion and experience the stickiness does not come back because you remove the top layer of adhesion and below that layer is just a button. When they manufacture the button they put a protective layer over the button and overtime with heat and sunlight that layer degrades into the sticky buttons.

    There is no need for any specific type of wipe. All you need is 98% Alcohol, it breaks down the plastic residue and cleans it like new. It actually cleans the buttons a little faster than the wipes that your using in the video above. I cleaned all the buttons in my xj with this technique.

    Beware once you remove the soft touch in some cases the actual black paint that's underneath gets exposed to scratches (the ones a nail can do). I wouldn't recommend other than 70% alcohol in most modern cars, because in most cases the plastic it's actually red or white, so if you go too far with this, you'll leave the button blank.

    If there ever was a case for a manufacturer recall, this is it. All of these Jag owners should get compensated for their time (if they decide to fix it themselves using this method) and materials, or have the dealers do the work for free. Completely unacceptable that this is allowed to go unfixed. It can also be a safety hazard.
