  • We show you how we fixed the peeling buttons on our Touareg Project. We purchased some button decals for our Touareg and wanted to show you the complete process of installing them. This required using goof off and a variety of tools to remove all the peeling soft touch.
    We then cleaned the striped buttons and painted some black on some of them. After these buttons dried, we installed the button stickers on the vehicle.
    Check out more on our project Touareg!

    Very appealing video...Similar events on my mk4 gti...with the pieces out, I hit the black plastic (around radio/hvac) with wet 320,400, 600,and finally plastic polish (novus #2) for a virtually scratch free finish. Gloss black might not have been the best, but it looked better than gummy, nicked soft touch.

    Excellent video, thanks for making it. I just purchased a 07 VW Touareg and tackling the same issues. I got the sticker stick but now need to start dismantling the AC unit and other bit. I used acetone as a test to strip the blank buttons on the rear air vent and it worked out perfectly then used some Rustoleum paint and primer to finish it off. 🇿🇦

    I'm glad you did that work because I've always figured it would be too labor intensive and you proved that. What do think of the design of those switches to be repaired or replaced? Was VW easier or more difficult than other cars? What was the most irksome thing about the upgrade (I'm thinking the white background) and what would you tell VW?

    Temove the peeling paint from the black trims with ONLY wet wipes (with alcohol) and a lot of rubbing patience! Result is no scratches and the plastic beneath will look nice and smooth, from personal experience.

  • @yankumarrah
    @yankumarrah 4 года назад +6

    Here's a tip for the soft touch peeling and removal. Use a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol and seal the trim and cloth in a zip lock bag. This will raise the soft touch off like air craft stripper on steel. No scrapes no scratches and easy rub off the soft touch coating. Keep in mind you would have better results by removing the circuit boards and soaking the trim pieces. Then you can refinish as needed.

The Non-Scratch (teflon safe) pads do not scratch the plastic beneath the soft-touch whereas the green pads will. The black plastic looks new and feels so much better, after deleting the soft-touch.

    replacement buttons and parts are not that expensive. Especially the mirror switches are common replaced by more durable parts on Aliexpress. You may even give it an upgrade by adding buttons with chrome edges. I've had a Audi A6 (2006) with sticky buttons. Replaced them all with new, chromed parts. Just set me back about 25 dollar. Much easier and much better results.

I placed a small label that was large enough on the switch (round), spray painted the switch, removed the label (round) and placed the new sticker on top. Mine looks perfect. I also completely remove the switch from the housing in the beginning. I did this 3 years ago and they look brand new. Much better than factory and no pealing.

    An easy way to consistently remove soft touch coating is to put the part in red hot water with a dishwasher tab or some strong car shampoo. Leave to soak, maybe top up with more hot water then scrub them with a nail brush or similar. Stubborn bits left after an initial scrub will come off after being soaked in the hot water again.
