This is wonderful! I've seen many senior horses in good shape lately. One lady (in Muddy Michigan) has a 30 yo Morgan cross that she still takes on trailrides with her students, because the old mare is the most forward horse in her 11-horse herd. The auction sold this horse to her as a 16 yo gelding. She's very dark, and nobody checked under the tail. Besides trailrides, and camping trips, the mare still does a light lesson load 3 x/wk. The same lady rescued a beautiful draft cross 15 mos ago that nobody knew was 8 mos pregnant. She knew nothing about foaling, and the whole experience has changed her life. She wanted a companion for the foal, so went to an auction of Brabent/Standardbred weanlings (upper Manitoba, Canada), and cheekily bought the most reserved, and sad, filly [only 4 mos old]. Another education for the lady!
The Moons, Britsh ex-pats living near Limoges, FR, have an "enchanted" farm, where they home a host of senior show horses that were on their way to slaughter... (Nick Moon rode a champion jumper in England... still has the horse) ... even a 'Golden' Akhal Teke from near the Belgian border! Also, an emaciated horse (.5 on the vet's 1-to-5 scale) they rescued 6 months ago, now looks just like Ziggy... fabulous!
There's simply no way to keep track of all the horses that have been neglected and/or abandoned. They are 'in captivity,' no doubt about it. It amazes me that they EVER trust us.

My red dun had the zebra marks on all 4.
He looks amazing 🥰 I just took in an emaciated senior horse blind in one eye but very sweet personality. Feeding him senior food plus weight enhancement, joint supplement, and Omega 3 oil. Any recommendation on feeding him? I do it twice a day with 24/7 hay and he seems to be doing good. Vet will see him next Week to give him a physical check.
We started feeding Ziggy every 4 hours for the first month, 2 big meals can overwhelm the system. But follow what your vet says 👍
