A doctor who dealt with famine victims and “camp” victims back in the 1970-s1980s told me that he had at first been surprised how picky starving people, including small children, can be about food.
The reason is that they instinctively understand that their constitution is weak, and that they can’t afford to suffer nausea or vomiting or “the runs”. They want familiar food and will turn down unfamiliar and apparently high-value foods (eg peanut butter) in favor of what they know they can cope with.
This makes so much sense!
That’s really interesting and does make sense to me 🌻🌻
Thank you for this explanation.
I know they tell you when you buy food storage to only store what you eat. That people will be starving and not eat that food. They are not used to.
This is so interesting. I had no idea why Winnie was being so picky. Thanks for the information. It's nice to learn the why of situations.
I had a grey Arab mare who adored baby anythings, and after she started kidnapping calves from the suckler herd she often grazed with, I bought a goat kid for her. They bonded wonderfully well together, and were together for over 12 years.
My sister had a mare in her breeding herd who tried to steal foals from other mares. Even when she had her own foal. One time she swapped foals, with another mare, and the mares raised each others foal. We named one of the swapped foals Stolli, cause she was stolen from her real mom.
That would be a great idea for Whinny. I grew up with Standard bred race horses and if there was a high-strung horse, they would often get it a goat friend. It helps with hauling them, too.
@@lindalape8493 Wonderful idea… Maybe we’ll tune in and see it someday soon.
haha kidnapping
@@beaulieuc8910 It was funny in a sort-of way, but not funny at all for the calves who, when they are very young, need a quite different routine to that of a foal, with much less activity and more quiet rest, lying down. It was also distressing for the mother cows, who had to go and look for their babies when they weren't where they'd left them, and dangerous for my mare who was, of course, threatened by the mother cows who wanted their babies back, and she didn't want to let them go.
Separation from the newly-calved cows in a separate bit of pasture helped, but wasn't a permanent solution. The goat was!
She may have been isolated for decades, but she still has herd instincts. Good for you for making her last years good ones!
We'll try!
Exactly what I was going to say. ❤️
💯
I'm a big believer in "the power of the herd". Once she settles down they'll help her heal and she'll find her place.
@@rhfarmstableshow about friend in the pasture
She is just a doll baby. After being alone for so long, she’s wanting to make friends and getting used to a new environment. She’ll settle in after awhile. Your fabulous job of working to get her healthy is the key to the success. She’s needy now and needs all the love and attention she can get. Thank you for rescuing that beautiful girl.
Did u guys try soaked hay cubes? They are denser than pellets. I had a 38 yr old Arab stallion and he lived on soaked hay cubes and rice bran . Rice bran is a good supplement and you can get in powder or pellets. I would suggest powder. That gives her fiber she needs and its soaked so easy to digest and much needed water.
What's on her front legs
@@JoyceStrezo,,,!,,,,,, o
Yes wonderful job and she will settle in beautifully I’m certain. ❤
A super comment that I believe says it all. I am grateful that you take care of her. I feel so sad for her past life. Thank you. ❤️🌹
So sad such a beautiful and sweet horse was neglected for so long. People can be so cruel. Thanks for rescueing her.
Very sad
As an owner, rescuer of all breeds of horses since the 70’s, especially Arabs, the purebred Arabians are tougher than all others. Their ancient ancestors lived in and crossed vast deserts, surviving w/ little food & water, fed dates packed with camel butter to make vast journeys. TY for saving yet another tough old goose, 32 years of any breed is miraculous, let alone being abandoned.
I had to put my boy down at 33. An Arabian that I had had since he was 4. He was floated at 32 and never could chew again. Mulched hay worked until we found Abscesses in his hooves from the Cushings. I was told by a Dental guy, not a Vet, that their teeth should not be touched after 30. For Silver, it was not good.
sweetheart most haven't been dessert dwellers for over 100 years, they are not their ancestors
@@RF-ec5bd I have been told by many vets that this dentistry is unnecessary
@@user-fl1pc7zu7f Erm actually ancestors lived for over 1,000's plus genes get carried on.
How about alfalfamolasses?
Abuse of animals needs to STOP . Anyone who abuses animal needs to be charged immediately no excuses .
It hits me so hard when people mistreat animals. I think they should have to have some kind of evaluation before anyone gets a pet. Maybe even yearly check ups? I dont know but i do know that it feels like worse than a sin when people abuse anyone including animals.
Where this takes place in America they criminalize poverty you can’t afford to buy the horse food you’re criminal. If you can’t afford to buy shelter you’re a criminal there’s not enough support to help these animals to get out of their care or help the owners take care of their horses so that’s why it’s so important to donate to these rescues
@@lauralangdon4680 I’m in total agreement with you on that !
We are all creatures and I detest the way that humans denigrate one another by calling them an “animal”….. implying that they are cruel ,vicious, and uncivilized. Of course we are different, but most of the time I find their company preferable to that of my own species.
🥰😊😍☺️☮️
@@B6east I definitely prefer the company of my dog over 99.99 of people.
@@rosebearcat If you can't afford a Horse then don't keep them. And if you can't cope contact the Animal rescue places.
She’s so interested in the baby….makes you wonder if she had any.
Her bad body condition is more obvious when she is with rhe orher horses. You weren't kidding about how bad it was. She didn't look too bad in the beginning. Thank you for helping this old girl.
After being alone all those years she's definitely making up for lost time with all her communication.
She's beautiful and in no time she'll be even more so.
Whinny is a special horse. Look at her head - incredibly beautiful & so much personality!
She looks like a fairytale character, w/her BIG eyes, her small grey nose, pretty forelock & tail (!), and long legs! I think (except for being SO underweight🥺) she's beautiful!🥰
My guy, McGee, was 32. He was 2 and I had him his Whole Life. My pony Heidi, was so cruel to him. She passed at 26.
When McGee's teeth wore down, we got a beets support food for him. And a few after Heidi was gone, we got Magic Castle. McGee finally fell in love. In fact he was tossing around with Magic when his heart gave.
I SO loved him. And this old gal must be so loved too.
An old dog trainer theory was to " never be sad when your pets have passed, their souls are still with you and they don't know why you are sad "
I think she's too weak to be with that many horses. Maybe a little pony or a goat. She's too weak to defend herself.
I had a couple of Arabian mares but at different times of my life. The one I am writing about in this post was a mare I had when we lived in Arizona, and she spent her whole life with the same family, except twice when we moved to Pennsylvania and I took her with us. When we had to move back to Canada I left her with her "family" because by that time she was 19 and I figured she would not adapt well to our cold winters. She was 35 when she left us. Mary used to soak her pellets so she could "gum" them - she basically had to teeth left. They were still there just worn down to the gum line. She was a super sweet mare.
Their spirits are in Heaven with
God, their Creator.🙏🏻✝️🐈🩷
@@annebalderston2520 Yes, they are.
People sometimes neglect horses when their finances are inadequate to properly care for them. They should give them up way before the animal becomes a basket case.
Give them up to where? Too many animals are given up because of finances. Dogs and cats go to kill shelters. Where do horses go? Think about that.
You're so awesome working with Whinny and taking her preferences into account. Isolation can wreak havoc on anyone's personality.
She has a beautiful spirit. She's going to be so gorgeous when she fills out. I don't understand how anyone could neglect her so badly.😢
She looks so sweet.
Socialization was bound to be a problem after 32 years alone.
Yes, & that’s problem she wants the company of people -
Woah! 'Didn't catch that! . . . 32 years? + 32 years ALONE???????
@@Ken19700 wow.
Isn't that the lifespan of a horse?
@@TomClarke-so3fd yeah, I heard it wrong. 32 year old horse was alone for a long time. Not, a horse was alone for 32 years.
I think this horse is telling you she is ultra desperate for company, and food tastes better with a person present, poor love
Criminal neglect. Thank you for helping her.
She already has a cat friend 🙂Thank you for being so kind!!!
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
@@rburns2808 - But cats are so independent. They are friends when they want to be not when the horse needs it. And the size difference is not the same as a goat. A goat is substantial body presence vs a cat.

Whinny has waited her whole life for someone like you❤❤❤
She is preserving her food when you leave her as she is afraid you may not come back. My dogs do that also, they run to their bowls as soon as I come back home 😊
Starved Jewish orphans would
hoard pieces of bread and sleep
with it in the orphanages after
WWII. Their caregivers started
giving them a whole loaf of bread
to hold while they were sleeping
to help with their anxiety. Animals that have been starved will also
develop food anxiety. 🙏🏻✝️😢
My food insecure dog did that too! It show d back up when we got a second dog but it quickly went away again once he realized the other dog won’t eat his food! Lol
Such a worthy place to donate money. Im glad to see the wholesome side of social media.
Whinny has been alone for so long, she may have forgotten how to be a horse. She just needs time to readjust to other horses.
She’s got the sweetest whinny ever! ❤❤❤
I had a dog I rescued and I had to sit with him we thought he was afraid to eat alone
She looks fascinated by the foal.
Poor Whinny. Thank goodness she has been rescued by you. I’m sure she will start to thrive under your expert and loving care.
She does look so much better and has a sparkle in her eyes!
Poor girl has no clue how to interact with other horses! Bless you for helping her and giving her a loving environment to learn.
Arabs are very people centered especially the mares like to be with other women. A lot of times they wint tolerate men or male horses..the desert bred lines are the most high energy horse on the planet. They really bond with humans.
My mare accidently knocked me unconcious once. She stood over my body and fought off all the men in my family who tried to rescue me.
It was only my daughter who she would let help me.
When she saw me again the next day she put her nose to my feet and sniffed me from toes to the top of my head where she gave out one big snort to clear my aura. Then she flounced off once she was sure I was okay.
They have character for sure.🥰🥰💕☺️
What an amazing story!
I loveee that story❤❤ i agree they r soo special. I have Arab rescues and i love their comeback attitude.
Clear your aura? lol
Well...I had a 1/2 Arabian mare over 30 years ago. (She could have been registered as 1/2 Arabian.) But, she was bigger and taller than a typical Arabian: and without the "scooped nose". More like the Arabians from Poland.
She was VERY loving towards people. And, she was quite fond of interacting with me (I'm a man.)
Like Whinny, my horse was vocal, too!
🎉❤
I totally agree with your comment. I had a Palamino Arab /quarter horse mix when I was 15. She stepped on my foot & I dropped. I was in the ring, let go of her lead line. I was crying. Instead of running off, she came to me, lowered her head , pressing against me, and kept snorting as if to say I am so sorry.
PS.. She hated men! Good girl LOLOL
Poor thing she is so skinny. Thank you for caring for her😊
So right for the skin and bone appearance. She cannot eat when teeth are bad. Have the teeth fixed please
Thank you all for caring. Our hearts are hopeful
Love the beauty of Arab horses. These are REAL horses for REAL warriors. She's really old but still looks like a Real Queen.
Thank you. What a shame she was neglected. Enjoy.
Yes, how anybody could be mean or uncaring to a beautiful gentle friendly animal like her is beyond me!
She looks good for her age, besides the neglect she went through.
God bless you 🙏🙏🙏 for saving this precious innocent cruelly treated wonderful horse 🐴 💕💕
What helped us recondition our geriatric horse (32 at the time he had a choke, and went off feed, barely eating) was adding corn oil to his feed per Vet orders. It helped him put on fat without further muscle absorption and loss. He went on to live until just weeks before his 35th birthday.
Unfortunately Whinny won't eat any liquid additive in her food
Winnie is adorable! I think she wants YOUR LOVE!!
The dear girl; she's so sweet. I still think of a circus horse I saw years ago who was just so unhappy and I pray for him/her. Bless you! 💓
Whinny definitely has a personality. She may be old, but she will be a pretty horse with a few more pounds on her. 🐴❤Though still thin, she looks better than she did when you unloaded her.
We think so too!
Whinny seems to be happy and knowing that she is being cared for so much ❤ it's a great thing ...
As a horse mom for more than 40 years, I commend you on the awesome job you do with all your rescues! From what I've seen, you do a better job than some of the large horse rescues I've seen on RUclips.
Thanks for educating folks on the correct way to care for older equines and all those in need!
Great job!
You are so kind
Did the vet come? HOW WERE HER TEETH?
HOW ABOUT ALFALFA MOLASSES?
Thank you for your kindness to all those deserving horses 😊❤
Thank you for rescuing horses.....
I'm sure she feels safer having them in the vicinity but probably feels too vulnerable in her weakness to be in with them right now.
Whinny is definitely interested in the baby♥️
I appreciate your video especially about thinking outside the box by offering many types of foods and different social environments and the use of good professionals. She was so interested in the baby she couldn't contain herself.
Than you so much for rescuing this beautiful horse. Arabian horses are people horses and they are very special!
She's a beauty. Such personality!
A friend had a super-senior who had his quirks about his diet, didn't like the timothy-alfalfa pellets and would tip out the green stuff to get to the Dumor Senior.
He was generally fairly placid, but when I turned into the driveway and tapped the throttle in my truck, the old boy would raise his head and flag his tail and race me to the barn, He knew I had a peppermint or an apple or carrot to chop for him.
He would always come to me and lay his head over my shoulder, lean in for petting or brushing, just an all-around sweet boy.
He had many human friends, and when he passed, his owner had a wonderful memorial for him.
Thank you. She’s Beautiful.
She isn't old. She is .... Eternal. Her spirit lives on in the Magic way. God bless you all for your support and love !
Do horses get diabetes ?
So beautiful the way you watch over your horses ❤❤
@cassandrahoward8325 yes they do
To me, It feels like Whinny is as emotionally starved for love, as the physical nutrition. Also---do elderly horses get a form of dementia, brain changes? I'm so glad to see how sensitive you are, noticing that she needs reassurance and company in order to be calm and eat. It's your Kindness that is feeding her, and what she craves. Aren't Arabians supposed to be very people-oriented? She's seen and done a lot in 32 years. Like all old ladies, she likes being paid attention to. Bless you!
Keeping a horse alone is disgusting abuse. Horses need to be around other horses.
Horse whisperers can tell you they are pretty smart intelligent and sensitive
I would not say keeping a Horse is abuse. But if you keep them you need stables, food, farriers, vet fees, exercise. Maybe owning them should not be allowed for just anybody.
@@TomClarke-so3fd Keeping a horse ALONE is abuse. Horses are herd animals and they need other horses around them to prevent anxiety.
Even I know this. I could just cry for this horse.
We rescued a neighborhood stray that I think someone left behind when they moved. (Tuxedo cat) it took us 6 months to coax him completely into the yard. He was scared and just so pitiful!! Two years later he is my most affectionate backyard cat! But! He eats the best when you hover over him while he eats. No other cats can bother him while eating. I would give anything if I could make him an inside cat but we have 7 in the house and he doesn’t like my other cats. Rescues take a lot of attention but the payback is enormous! Mr. Bojangles went from skinny and horrified to a round tummy and his own apartment that is heated in the winter and he gets mega love now. We are diligently working to get every stray that comes into my backyard spayed or neutered to stop the madness of crazy cat numbers everywhere. Not all are friendly so that I can do flea meds and such but they at least get a good round of treatments when they get fixed. I need pray terribly to catch a very skittish stray mama who eats on my back porch. We rescued one of her kittens but the other got run over before we could catch it.😭 PLEASE pray we can get TWO of these mamas fixed!! Prayer is a powerful thing! And THANK YOU for doing what you do!!🙏 If each of us do what we can where we are the world wouldn’t suffer so badly! Whether you help people or animals, find something to help and do it!
I have used my Havahart trap so many times over the years to trap, then spay or neuter cats who are either tame enough to bring inside, or provide shelter, food, and water in our backyard. Most of our indoor cats were out fending for themselves in the woods behind our house~ and they clearly had homes when young and cute!!!😢
Praying
She probably wants her person. I’ve met horses like this. They are a pet. They need their person to be happy.
I’m looking forward to her journey
She has been lonely for so long. Thank you for giving her the loving and good foods so she will thrive
Arabians are very people friendly/ In ancient times. the Bedouins would keep the horse in the tent. They needed each other. Many years experience with Arabians--breeding, training, endurance. At 81 I am looking forward to returning to the horse world. This girl is beautiful even skinny. They are very sturdy and usually do well on alfalfa. Easy keepers. I wish I could donate or had a place to take her in. Meanwhile, you and she are in my prayers. I know at least one Arabian who was still doing well at 45! Thank you for your program. I am enjoying seeing retired racing horses and all the rest. I am also a retired counselor and therapist of people. Glad to see you are also working with humans. I'm blessed I found your channel!
Welcome, and thank you🙏
She’s loving having some human company, bless her heart. She actually is looking better. Good job blending her in with people and her own kind. It’s going to take time for her, poor soul. Thanks for your patience and loving kindness on her. You’re exceptional. Blessings 💞
She has such kindness in her eyes
Really glad you rescued this lonely horse.
Looks like an Arabian. She’s beautiful. ❤
She is!
Armchair equestrian opinion here…. I was under the impression that the behavior the horses had during the introduction is normal as they establish dominance. It doesn’t mean someone doesn’t “like” the new horse. It seemed she had lots of space to “get away” if she wanted, and the others respected that. She’s curious about the others so that seems good.
She's a princess for sure. She's obviously been a mommy. She wanted that foal .❤
Triple crown senior feed and beet pulp may help her. Thank you for saving this beautiful soul❤

Whinny is adorable! Thank you so much for rescuing her!
I have a 33-ish grey Missouri Foxtrotter cross gelding. He was rescued from a slaughter auction and had medical issues and had been abused. You're already light speed ahead with her because she doesn't seem to mistrust you. Yes, she is very underweight!
You might try hand feeding her to build trust with her and help her eat more, but now that her dental work has been done, she'll probably eat better.
Snowy has outlived the usefulness of his teeth, and he gets a soaked pelleted diet with supplements. The senior feed is usually sweeter in taste and can be combined with various hay pellets and ration balancer. While hay and forage are ideal, it can be much easier to manage a pelleted diet specially created for older horses, especially with dental issues. Snowy loves his diet!
Sorry to ramble on, but i thought you might find some value in our experience. It's so rewarding to take on an older horse with medical issues (he has Cushings and arthritis) and see them respond and enjoy their lives!
Thank you for sharing your journey with this well-deserving, sweet mare.
P.S. Whinny and Snowy would make a cute pair - he still likes the ladies! 😉
