My first gelding was on his way to a slaughter yard when I brought him and took him home. He was ten years old and so gentle, I loved him dearly. That happened 45 years ago, his picture is on my refrigerator and I have wonderful memories of Sam. ❤️ Best horse ever, he’s in my heart to stay.
I still have a picture of my girl Geyia, Missy to me. I got her when I was 13. I'm 73 now. She's always in my heart...🐎💖
we used to have a few horses but the first one got ate by those things whatever they are in the woods.. the next one was put down.. third one sold.. and last one almost starved but he was saved.

We answered an ad for a gelding. To find a starving, sick, weak, filthy horse. I couldn't leave him behind. $300 and my sister was leading him to the trailer. The guy had the nerve to say we were getting "a hell of a deal". I pivited on my heal and was just so furious. Two steps and our friend put me over her shoulder and carried me back. He was so weak he could barely walk. And was trying to whinny at the sight of the hay. The vet met us at the ranch. Said he was 3 days from just dropping dead. Six months later, he was an entirely different horse

It makes me sick, but what's the difference between a horse burger and a cow burger? Cows are just as gentle and affectionate, curious and funny - and some, like the Jersey cow, are downright beautiful. What about that cute lamb or adorable inquisitive calf whose young lives are cut short or painfully under-lived for some stupid cut of meat? Also, it's really just French Canadians (Quebecois), not typically 'Canadians' who eat horse meat.

There's a difference between being starved , abused, treated like a worthless being, being sent to a slaughter house, having poor living standards, no room, having no nutrients, and then the alternative being free, having shelter, fresh grass and air in the country, being put down effortlessly by a professional vet so it's painless... Also yes I'm a vegetarian thanks for asking politely and not at all prying into my personal life -.-
These are so hard for me to watch, but ultimately fulfilling. My financial situation right now doesn't allow it, but when that improves I will be helping for sure.

Seeing this has help a lot! A few days back, we went to the auction and bought ourselves a dapple mare. She’s extremely malnourished, and depressed. The people there said she wasn’t;t pregnant, had no diseases or not, but turns out, she’s roughly 3 weeks along, and has laminitus.
Having this mare is quite hard, and seeing her in this condition on a daily basis doesn’t help, but were working her up slowly, and hopefully shell go into foaling safely, and the both can find their fortune with us and our others.

I've just turned 22 and am in training to learn how to save, care for, and re-educate horses that have been rejected. I see so many misunderstood horses going to slaughters, left in paddocks from foal to adult barely touched and then deemed dangerous. I currently work at a rescue where we saved a Mumma mare and her baby foal from slaughter and every day I am inspired to go out there and do my best for these animals because they deserve it. It's impossible to save them all but changing the world of one animal is still such a beautiful blessing and worth every moment

Just a lot of patience..and get ready my horse threw me off more times than I could count..ok I bounced..I was 13...we sold him to a teenage girl and her mom and dad...they kept him on their farm until he was over 30...they called me when they had to put him down..but he always had little girls taking care of him...big flirt!

It's called Precocial or Altricial species. Humans are Altricial since we are useless from birth while an antelope is Precocial because it can can run around pretty much immediately.

Animals are no property of nobody, they are not toys... You don't really love animals if you force them to live standing by your rhythms, giving you their milk which in nature is only produced to feed the newborn baby, in the right amount for that purpose.

Ugh, the slaughterhouses of Mexico are hideous...Just seen a vid of one, and my eyes are sore with the tears.. we have local slaughterhouses here that are called ''cruel'' but they are like a palace compared to some..too many horses are bred. Very sad.
I felt the same way. I cried seeing them all. All those beautiful souls. Cannot believe people sell their horses when they're 'done' with them for such a cruel end of life.

this one definitely stuck with me. the poor mother remembers how terrible all that was and I'm sure she's so happy and knows how lucky she is that her baby gets to live a wonderful life.
Oh geez! This one has me crying. First, the auction hurt. Then, little Orion was born and mom and baby are healthy. Then seeing Orion venture outside for the first time, all tentative. I was laughing/crying watching him kick up his hind legs in joy. Then, watching mom and son running and frolicking in the fields, with no worries. The no worries is due to Vet Ranch and everyone that contributes to it whether by watching these videos and ads, or straight up donations. You did this. You saved mom and baby and have given them a good healthy life. I wish we could get an update pic of Orion, he is such a beautiful creature!

Honestly it isn't really okay to slaughter any animal healthy enough to carry out it's life. But that is just the opinion of me and others who put ourselves in the animal's shoes, i mean, thinking about it, i wouldn't want to be slaughtered

I understand how it feels to want to save them all. Every now and then I would take in a cat from the animal shelter and foster it until I found a home. Going in there to pick one... Just devastating to leave without them all. All meowing at you, begging you. The most depressing thing I think I'll ever experience... Knowing they will all be euthanized soon. :(
The most relatable thing in the world. I hate going to pet stores, as they beg you to adopt them, but you only get one.

I don't understand why you do this in the US! Here in Germany we don't pur animals in shelters asleep!! What kind of *SHELTER* is this then?!?!?!
MissBoneshaker (speaking as someone who adopted a dog from a kill shelter) Shelters have a certain amount of room, and a certain amount of kennels they can put the animals in. If if animals start flooding in (for example my local shelter gets swamped with people dumping rabbits after easter) and they have _no room_. Some dogs may not even have a chance due to an illness they may have. I'm very against kill shelters, and I'm very glad we rescued my dog Archie when we did.
I wish it was ethical to run prisons the way we run animal shelters; kill them when there isn't enough room.
Watching the baby learning to stand up was so precious . . . I love how gangly and awkward baby horses are for the first few days while they figure out how their legs work.
We did this...adopted an abused, pregnant horse. Her foal died at birth, but that mare became the best riding horse ever! I did so love my sorrel Lady Red. ❤❤❤
someone really needs to check out that auction house. that was a lot of malnourished horses in too small a space, even if they're supposed to be processed or whatever. it shouldn't be legal.
I don't think that WAS legal, horses are required to have 3-or-so acres for one, then add an acre for each individual horse.

I am the proud owner of two horses. Both geldings. Both happy, healthy, a little bit goofy, and both allowed to be horses. Both were GIVEN to me by owners who simply had too many horses on their pasture. I'd love to tell anyone considering purchasing a horse to look into those horses who are considered "culls"...who maybe don't have the papers, or aren't the "right" color, or who maybe aren't as flashy as a "new" horse. It's a wonderful feeling to know you took two horses who were unwanted and gave them a great life, and it's an amazing thing to see their little quirky personalities come out as they bloomed under good care, time and patience. My boys have turned out to the absolutely beautiful horses who are easy and gentle to work with (the vet and farrier love them) and we ride in rope halters. The people who gave them away (and those who knew the horses before) are stunned when they see them and ask if they're the same horses. Yep. The same horses, and their loss is my gain.

21Cauzzie Absolutely. Our dog was a give a way puppy, and we found our cat at the edge of our property when she was a tiny kitten. (So small she fit in the palm of my hand and had to be fed with a medicine dropper). As soon as they were old enough, they were spayed/neutered and are a joyous part of the family.

YES THEY ARE JOYFUL and This horse is an Attentive Mom - she Loves her baby even though she was sickly her baby is fine!!! That was such a Close Call for them both!
I see some comments where people seem to be depressed, wish that they "could do these things" and seem to indicate that they feel "inadequate" somehow because they aren't doing these people's professions. I think that deep down, all of us who care about animals wish that we could help in a big way like all of the people that we see in these videos. Of course, many of us have no vet training whatsoever and are in our own career paths. Everyone has their part to play in life and many of us also work in services that the vets need and use in their everyday lives when they aren't doing this stuff and are with their families. You might be the cashier at the store that checks them out, the mechanic at the shop fixing their vehicles so that they can get to/from work, assist with rescues, etc. You might be the person at the doctor's office that checks them when they or their kids are sick, the person who helped build what would later become their vehicles at a manufacturing plant, the person who helped create or ship their vet medical supplies to make all of this possible, the machine operator at the factory that makes the food that they eat. The point is that all of us have our purpose in life and indirectly help one another to essentially make the world go around, as the saying goes. This is not something that you as an individual, even if you are a vet, could do alone. This is a full network of teams of people not only at the vet office, but in various states. Remember that Vet Ranch also has a high amount of funding and resources. Live your life and do what you can in life to help animals on your own while also supporting larger organizations like this who take care of the larger issues.

Indeed! Above all is educating the young on how important it is to love and care for animals! If all of us could even influence one child on how important it is to treat animals like we would want to be treated, it might solve the problems we are facing such as dog fighting and abuse & neglect toward all animals.

Im okay with animals being eaten, but its not okay when the animals we eat didnt even enjoy their life. Id be fine if those horses were in a big field with proper food, and then sent off to be humanely killed and eaten. But instead these animals suffer and live in tiny places where they can barely walk around. I mean is meat really more important than an animals life? Also this is why I became a vegitarian.

I can understand that people will eat horse, it's not like some cultures don't protest to us eating beef, but it is just cruel how those horses were being held. (Could say the same for parts of the cattle industry.)
In iceland they eat alot of horse meat, I personally don’t view it as mean or bad. Cows, pigs, horses, what are the differences? I haven’t tried horse meat myself, but i would try it if it was offered.

Roadtrip’s Biscuit. I agree with you on how to treat animals although I am not a vegetarian. But everyone in the US who says they don’t eat horse meat, I think might be mistaken. You guys love yourself some Italian salami, don’t you not? Salami is traditionally made from horse. Beef and turkey salami is available, I know. But that’s not the real thing. And horse meat is actually supposed to be beneficial for dogs, especially when they suffer from allergies and can’t digest other kinds of meat well. It is also very high in iron, compared to beef. (Per 100 grams of meat 3.5 mg of iron in beef versus 16 mg of Iron in horse). It’s just harder for horse lovers to accept the idea of feeding (or eating) horse meat, and I get that. @@joelynlykke6113 It is a MAJOR psychological and emotional issue for me...idk if it is an American thing or just that they are SOOO majestic and highly intelligent. I know that the meat obtained is frequently used in dog foods though.
