Murdaugh Murders and Mysterious Death of Stephen Smith - What’s the Connection?

  • Leading up to the murders of Alex Murdaugh’s wife and son in June 2021, another person with connections to the disgraced lawyer’s family died. Stephen Smith, a 19-year-old nursing student from South Carolina, was found dead on the side of a road in Hampton County in 2015. Although originally ruled a hit-and-run, SLED investigators reopened the cold-case investigation into Stephen’s death shortly after Maggie and Paul Murdaugh were killed. Investigators have not revealed whether Stephen’s death is connected to the Murdaugh murders but are aware that Smith and the Murdaugh brothers knew each other. Supporters have continued to seek justice for Stephen to this day. The Law&Crime Network’s Jesse Weber is joined by Susanne Andrews, the Founder of Standing for Stephen.

I said the housekeeper was alive for three days... But then I think I heard him say three months. But I still believe they were finally murdered off by Alex's father he was also into murdering people. As one person said about the boat accident they were wanting the other boy to take responsibility for driving the boat and someone that the reporters were talking to said that had the grandfather been able that the boy would have been alligator bait!! So this pretty much tells you why everyone was so afraid of the murdocks... Like I said anytime the murdocks were involved it was all swept under the rug and talking about people disappearing that new things being paid to move. Well who's to say that they didn't actually die one way or another after they were PAID to move... It just put them in another town and away from the murdocks so they couldn't be involved!!

The police didn't push this theory, the pathologist did. The police, as well as the coroner, disagreed with the theory contained in the pathologist's report, and looked for an explanation from her, but didn't get anywhere. In the end their investigation was based on the pathologist's findings, because this is the process they formally had to follow.

The first thing my husband did was roll his child over and comfort him. Covering himself in blood. When I arrived I wrapped my arms around him. It's an automatic response. No scratches and impact marks on his body. Phone beside him not cracked or scratched. No spattered blood. No glass, plastic, parts of car or grill anywhere. His car was 6 miles away on another road. I don’t believe it’s coincidence that the father of two spoiled bullies who knew Stephen showed up along w the uncles. Explains why AM deleted calls to brothers bc maybe that was their MO when one did something bad that needed a cover up. All such a shame! Even for Paul & Buster… they didn’t choose their parents.

    • @amandak3198

Yea I wish they would explain why him having loosely tied shoes on is so important. Because its extremely common that when people are hit by a car or anything moving with that much momentum, they get knocked right out of their shoes or their shoes go flying off their feet when they are in the air. A lot of people probably don't know that, and the loosely tied shoes is either just a random mystery to them or it conjures the idea that he was re-dressed or something, and I don't think that's the point they are making, I think the point is that how could he have been hit by a car so violently in the head and kept his shoes on? Even someone driving by and hitting him in the head with a baseball bat probably would have knocked him out of his shoes.

This young man was killed and it is OBVIOUS it wasn’t a hit and run!! And for “this” family to get involved they way the did (free services trying to get passwords) means they were up to something!!! Why else would they get involved?!? I pray this family gets justice asap!!! ❤

That Stephen's case was re-opened after the murders of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh, certainly seems to highlight that the police see some connection might exist there. This was quite obviously not a hit and run, due to the lack of evidence that would normally be at the scene were that the case. There was a suggestion that Buster Murdaugh had some relationship with Stephen which has not been explored, at least, not publicly. And the most damning thing was Alex's brother, Randy, offering to take up the case for 'free' if he could access Stephen's phone and devices. To do a little erasing and editing, do you think?? Yeah.

100% Randy was there immediately to cover up, this crime. The Murdaugh's need to be pay for all crimes they have done.

ELEANORE RYAN-I hear you. Steven Smith deserves justice, his injuries were as if someone beat him with a Louisville Slugger, not a “hit by car “- I am so sad that he is gone. It’s horrifying, and ugly.

Wouldn’t that be something Alex goes to prison for murder and then find Buster guilty of murder too!

It would but Stephen allegedly said he was involved with a prominent MAN. Buster was just a Teen. So it couldn't be Buster. It was probably Randy.

His injuries are more consistent with being thrown out of the back of a moving vehicle. Perhaps beaten/busted up, or subdued, first. I'm from Texas, and we have seen horrible events (ESPECIALLY those perpetrated by associates of deeply closeted individuals) end in such a manner. The road rash appears to be a single impact, and the blood pattern suggests he didn't move from the place where he was discovered, once dumped. This family....OMFG
