Oh my gosh. Everything you said at 4:30 mark is me. I was fitted for Mizuno irons a couple years ago, and was put in more forgiving irons but sole is wider and probably more heavy. I learned golf on blades. I'm in my 50's with Driver swing speed 95-100mph and I hit my 7 155. My irons are regular, but woods are stiff shaft. Your explanation is very interesting. Never thought of drag as I tend to pull my shots like you said. Steel fiber might be something to check out.

The feel and real comment you make is interesting, especially in relation to grip pressure. A couple of years ago I remember seeing a lab experiment (you tube) on grip pressure where the club had sensors in the handle that measured the grip pressure applied in the swing (a pro was swinging the club, not the scientist!).
At address the pro said his grip was three out of ten and the scientist measured the pressure as a datum starting point.
The pro swung the club and said that he felt he'd maintained the 3 out of 10 grip pressure throughout the swing.
The science however measured a grip pressure way beyond 10 (something like 5 or 6 times greater than his perceived 3 out of 10 address pressure) from downswing and through impact.
Further swings gave the same result. It proved that the oft repeated 'toothpaste' / 3 out of 10 analogy was in fact nonsense as it would be impossible to hold onto the club in a full pro swing if a toothpaste grip pressure was maintained throughout.
It seems that the human brain instinctively knows this, and accordingly sends an 'apply more pressure' message to the fingers.
A very surprising feel versus real example. I've often wondered if the same applies when putting albeit with a relatively different pressure/ swing speed ratio.

Super duper interesting!!! I think I read somewhere that Ernie Els recently switched to lighter shafts in his irons (I think just irons…not 100%) and gained some distance. And the bit about being relaxed at address and swing tempo etc. has always intrigued me. Saw an old clip recently of Bobby Jones swinging and he looks like he’s barely holding the club. And back to Els, he looks so relaxed-the “Big Easy is so fitting. I think “Range Ramblings” is a great idea for a video. Thanks as always!!!! Looking forward to the next one!!!!

Hi Iona, couldn't agree more about the importance of playing shafts that are better suited. I've been playing for 14 years, mid-handicapper, 90-ish driver clubhead speed, and I recently tried out a bunch of irons. Bottom line, I've been playing Taylormade and Callaway irons, steel shafts, 80-90 grams, switched to 70 gram shafts and suddenly I can time my swing way better, with excellent results. The confidence boost alone has been worth it, as has been the pleasure of seeing more shots come out the way I planned. Love your channel, keep up the good work.

Iona, I have been using the MMT 80 fibre steel shafts in stiff for 18 months. When I was being fit for the irons, the fitter said, they are a marmite shaft, and I agree. I couldn't change back now, they're so smooth, compared to steel shafts IMHO. I also have another set with similar shafts, not MMT's and they too are smooth to hit. The big plus is a reduced amount of vibration felt at impact, which again, as we age is a huge positive. Thicker grips also help, I have XL hands so my grips are jumbo, but would suggest these thicker grips again reduce vibration. Good to see you back hitting balls, and sure the swing will quickly sort itself out over the winter season. It has been a busy year for you, with so much TV work. Long may it continue, think you are a favourite with the players.😁

I really enjoy your videos. I very rarely comment on videos but I also struggle with a bad wrist and having to give up the dream of playing professional golf. I have made some changes in my shaft to make it easier to play. I have been teaching and club fitting for 30+ years. I recently switched to the Auto Flex shaft in all my clubs and the properties of this shaft have really helped. Lighter weight shaft and the shaft really kicks with less effort. I am hitting the driver 15 yards longer and hitting the irons one club longer and the only change to the club was the shaft. If you try this it is critical for it to work correctly to have the correct flex based on your club head speed and correct swing weight for the shaft. Enjoyed your video with Adam Scott and he used the Auto Flex in his driver a couple of years ago. Great to see you have found a new career your excellent at and enjoy. Wish you all the best and look forward to more videos.

OK, will start taking my alignment sticks out to the driving range again. Just got a bit lazy. Have to admit that I loved my new clubs straight away when I got them (a couple of years ago), following a lengthy fitting session trying many clubs and shafts. Ended up getting lighter shaft, 110 gm down from old 130 gm. Still love them. Also still wish I could swing like Adam Scott.

  • @mige1334

One underrated part for a soft feeling is the grip (or better - it´s material). I was fitted for Taylormade P770 irons with Nippon Modus 3 105 shafts in s-flex (btw a shaft, often played on LET and LPGA Tour; it is a very good combination of lighter weight, soft feel and accuracy). During the fitting it felt so soft, but i ordered the clubs with the grips (WINN DriTac Wrap Midsize), i had on my former clubs . I felt a little too hard for me, even with good hits. Changing to softer grips (WINN Exel) was the key to have his beautiful feeling, i had at the fitting session.
One other thing comes in my mind, when you describe your inward rotation problem with the T200 irons ... a wrong lieangle ... maybe? I´m sure, that you had great fitters at Titleist, that have checked that, but i think it is important, to mention that point.

Superb reminder about Adam Scott saying to give it a moment at the top of the backswing - so many of us rush that bit, most likely (certainly for me at times) caused by slight panic at the top & not being confident we’ve got it done well enough or for what’s to come - reality is that delay will most likely give us the best chance of hitting it well!

    Another nice video, Iona.
I must say - like others - I am surprised that you have not ventured into graphite shafts (as yet) for your irons.
I just got fit into the T150s with LA GOLF, Mid-85g, graphite shafts in S-flex (I am mid-40s) and there was a night and day difference re: stability/softness compared to the steel fibre.
I went for these primarily due to tendonitis, so put the LA shaft onto the 48deg wedge as well.
Then I got a separate fit for the higher wedges and got given "constant weight" graphite shafts (Accra) to try - just to feel the wedge head more (with the same stability / softness).
    Game changing.
