DANG! There was an "AHA!" moment for me in this video. I stopped using the alignment line on my ball because, as you say, it never looked right when I was over the putt; I just didn't trust it. It didn't occur to me that it WAS right, but that it just didn't look right because of where my eyes were in my stance.

i've also found that it helps to pick out a point 3-6 inches in front of the ball. if you roll your putt directly over your mark you can often be confident the putt will fall before you even look up.
it helps to determine if you are mistriking the ball and pushing or pulling your putts if you miss that mark to the left or right, rather trying to determine that from end result. in which case it can be more difficult to determine whether you made a bad read or a bad strike.
used in conjunction with these tips can be very useful.

This was an excellent video. When you realized the adjustment to the putter angle to the forearm was exactly opposite of what the instructor was seeing? BANG! Purple dust exploded from my head. I checked myself, used my phone to video my setup. Guilty. Putted for a bit in my living room at a dime. Vastly improved. Will be hitting the putting green soon to exercise some demons out of my putting.

Awesome video! I 100% agree about the mental video of making the putt. The days I really focus on that 'video' are the days I can't miss.
For anyone still reading, I took a putting lesson a year ago and found out the hard way that people see the line differently in their minds. Some people see a straight line to a target point that the ball falls off of, and others see a curved line that the ball follows all the way to the hole. Figure out which mental image you have and focus on it. It was another game changer for me.

I’m not draining a lot of long putts, but I am leaving everything within 3 feet which is a huge boost for my scoring. I almost don’t even need to read if I got the speed. The read just gets me even closer. I stand behind the ball and look at the ball and the hole as I make a practice stroke that I believe is the right speed, then set up my aiming point and make that same stroke.

I honestly believe if playas spent 1 solid hour a week putting, working on the 1-3 footers, and working a bit on the lags, doing what this video says, they will become good putters. My handicap is currently 33, and in July of last year, I was averaging 38-39 putts. But in the fall and winter, I put a few hours of putting practice in, and my stats on the SwingU app show me as a single digit (9hcp) putter.
I average right at 35.5 putts per round, and I know I can get better!
I did it by using these methods and mindsets, listening to Matt and Bob R, RESPECTING every single putt, and by believing that I am a good putter. I AM a good putter!

People have been selling elixirs for centuries. The fact is however of the many millions of golfers in the world, only a few people can make a living at the game. One guy made 52 of 52 from inside 10 feet a few weeks ago to win. Do you seriously think he did not find out how to putt ? The snake oil you sell is just that. There is a right way and a wrong way to putt. People are just too lazy to find out what a proper putting stroke is. And they think their common sense is correct. Tilted plane putting is difficult to understand. So is why the release is vitally important. Ben Crenshaw had it right. If you do not understand why the arc, why the putter must appear to open & close relative to the target, and why you must release the putter head, you are ALWAYS going to be a putter hack. The human body is not equipped to go against nature. SBST people all think they are "common sense" genius's. But what they really are are fools who get lucky every so often. They are the laziest one's of them all. There is no shortcut to becoming a good putter and as Jack Nicklaus told Golf Digest many years ago, "there is no putting tip that actually works". You have to learn how to putt. Some of the newest training aids actually do that. The one which puts a tilted plane above the ball will actually do that. And curving the ball into the hole is becoming popular. Nicklaus just admitted to doing that. It doubles the margin for error as even Jack pointed out. Aim left or right edge, and slice or hook the ball into the hole. Do not aim at the center of the cup. Add 2-1/4 inches to your margin for error. Michael Breed teaches that method. You cover NONE of that.

11:15 I returned to the game last year after a 20 year hiatus. Concentrating on distance control substantially more than the break now has really helped. On putts outside of 8 feet or so I'm 80% speed and 20% line. On longer putts it's pretty hard to misread the break by 10 feet but I see a lot of people miss the speed by that much.
Instead of practicing distance control towards a hole or a tee I putt towards the edge of the practice green. With no real left or right aim reference it really helps me concentrate only on the speed.
I'm far from the World's best putter but I'm much better now in the last 16 months than I was in the 10 years I had been playing back then.

1 thing i learned from someone better than me about confident putting / mental putting. If you do make a bad putt, or 3 putt or whatever. You literally just make every excuse imaginable. Nothing on the green was because you did anything wrong. Its strange thinking that way (because it surely was our fault) but somehow it does keep your confidence going into the next hole.

Best improvement I had in putting was applying a Luke Donald tip I saw where he said visualize staring into a mirror under the ball and still be staring in to your eyes AFTER the stroke. Absolutely sends the ball out on the correct line every single time (assuming you have read it correctly!!!)
Also I just happened to see a bit of PGA coverage and the anchor was talking about a lad on the practicing with a kettle-bell posture. I gave it a try for a laugh and I must say it keeps you rock solid over putts!!!

"gain control by giving up control"- such a great quote. And it works for me. I almost never look at a putt from behind the flag because that´s not where my ball is. Keep it simple. Don´t worry about which way the grass is growing. Or whether your moon is aligned with Uranus. Over analysing is over anal. with icing. If I have a big break across a slope, sure I might go to the upside of the hole to see where it´s going to drop in from, and you can see where that is because the lip of the hole will look pretty level. Then pick that point and visualise an arc, that gets steeper at the end as the ball loses speed from the putt. Then just put it out there and let gravity do the rest.

I consider myself a pretty good putter and short game player but this video has really opened my eyes to a few things. One of the reasons my short play is good is I don't hit the ball far, so not only do I practice it, I get to put that practice into play regularly. I am often asked how can I have that short game as a 17 marker and my reply is always "because I don't hit a lot of greens in regulation". Thanks again Matt, learning heaps.

Something I learnt recently through trial and error. If the angle in your trail wrist alters during the stroke, even slightly, from address position, the putter face will open or close unless you make a compensating move. There are many ways to achieve this and it doesn't really matter how you achieve it but it's important.

Dude do you/did you smoke weed? I think of a video game too. My controller is just fucked up haha. It works, just not very well or consistently. The one you put aside until it's NEEDED or if there's another dude that's gonna play and you give him that one 🙂😙, then he figures out it got some soda or something spilled on so the buttons stick so there's no pressure sensor and the joysticks stick so his dude will be doing a random spin and run outta bounds and dive sporadically and probably go for some unreasonable interceptions that will most likely let somebody cut off an 80 yarder on him. But it isn't SO BAD and if it's played it'll probably loosen up the sticks and really it's just that triangle that's BAD and dudes got some skills. One of those kinda controllers. If anyone followed that 😂😂😂

no sir have never tried any substances
controller i get it though, we used to get the off brand cheap 2nd controller - it was awful.
then one day i saved for an original.
and that was the day i refused to accept second best for mild money savings

When I do “one foot putts” I always hit them as hard as I can and still have them go in. It helps me not quit on my putter swing, knowing the ball can be going pretty quick and still go in. Plus, everything else in that drill comes into play as well. Very good if you want to be more aggressive.

"Putting is a combination of speed and line that is all" Is sorta similiar to what ive been told of. "you always have to strike a put straight, You never try to curve it. Thats the job of the green."
I feel thats super beneficial to me as well to stop me from compensating for my vision. I happen to be left dominant as a righty, so for me im "ok" at gaging but the mind plays tricks on you.
"Trust your aim, shoot it straight" And let the green do the rest. (gives you someone else to blame as well! ;D)

Wonderful. Most people would tell you just to pick a spot in between the hole and the ball and focus on that only while all I wanted to do is to imagine the film of the ball gloriously fall in the hole. Glad I am not the only one. have imagine crowds cheering. I used to even tip my cap at the imaginary crowd if I left a long one at tap in length. Does look stupid but it's a real positivity boost. Dr. Bob would approve I guess because I always putt to hole it. Ironically, I have more difficulty doing the same from 1-2 meters, which tends to feed my mind with negative thoughts. As one is statistically not really expected to make long putts often that makes it easier to "give it to the universe" so no negative thoughts there, if only I could copy that on shorter ones. And although I love my shot scope watch for many reasons, knowing that to make around 57% of these to go into the lower eighties I can only manage a measly 38% isn't helping to chase out negative thoughts, so thanks Sensei for the great tips for the shorter ones!

I like to use the scattergun approach. I try to think on 5-6 footers, I know I'll make 50% of them in the long run so it doesn't really matter if this one in particular doesn't go in. Good way to release that outcome focused thinking.

Good stuff matty. I don’t use a line on my ball because I set up the putt with the line and check it “no that’s too far left” I move it a poofteenth right “no it’s right now” move it half a poofteenth it’s not right. All this takes too long and my brain isn’t convinced. I don’t know how people set a line from ball to hole and it’s right. Also your line is massive. Brad faxon says one single line with a normal sharpie. The bigger the line the more alignment issues like I have. If you have any tips to line it up in less than 3 attempts I’d love to hear them

I can tell that dropping your hands a bit to allow the shaft to run through your forearm is still uncomfortable for you b/c you're drifting back up! ;-). but you were right, that was the single biggest improvement I made in my set up. such great tips from one of the best RUclips golfers out there!
