I think the thing that goes missing in all of these conversations about "performance" and "productivity" is that a lot of people are uninterested in being a top performer. They want to be good at what they do and enjoy their work, and get paid a living wage for it. But current thinking says that you need to be a one percenter, and if you're not making it, it's your own fault. The real problem is that our values have become skewed so that we are told that more money is the only impulse worth following, not loving what you do.

I think this message is for the people who DO want to be top performers. And the less other people try the easier it is for those people to compete. Any path is valid, but for those who seek to excel, these messages are encouraging and informative.

      @@samanthabarron8481 Valid point.
But what do you mean when you say "the less other people try the easier it is for those people to compete"? I may be missing your meaning, but that statement seems to confirm my point that our values are skewed.
To clarify my comment, I didn't mean to suggest that one shouldn't put in a solid effort in one's chosen field and just get by. I meant that we have become captivated by results rather than process.
Why be a top performer if you hate the way you spend your time day to day?
Tell me what you think top performers are. I love the opportunity to learn!

It's funny how CEO's are giving advices to other CEO's, businessmen and entrepreneurs:
    - Let others do work they don't want to do
    - How they can work less hours (so they can spend more time with families, of course)
    - to work only on things that matter (happier, richer)
    - How to sell this thing for 10 times the price. So they can sell to less clients (basically to work less, of course (to spend more time with their families, of course))
    - How to buy a business and make other people DO THE ACTUAL WORK
And how the same people give advices to other people:
    - JUST. WORK. HARDER.
    - WORK MORE
    - YOU DON'T WORK HARD ENOUGH

I have to disagree with her on Quiet Quitting and Work/Life Balance. Do not give out your efforts to an employer without adequate compensation. Sure, going above & beyond gets you noticed, but it can also be easily abused by your employer. I've been personally burned by this, doing the work of someone who in any other company would be making double my salary. Never again. Quiet Quitting is not being lazy or lacking effort. It is purely doing the job you are paid to do and nothing beyond that. If the employer wants more out of you, they should properly incentivize you through increased pay/benefits...and not just pizza parties and pats on the back.

Work with this mindset enough and this will be your default. Nothing kills you more than complacency. When she said that I was kind of thrown off but I’ve seen her on other pods before. Complacency was her main point. Even though I do agree with you that the employer should compensate you for your work. I also don’t like when people have this mindset of just doing their job. I’ve seen this to many times where just doing the job turns into carelessness and horrible personal standards.

Yeah, standing by an employer who doesn't respect your contributions and won't adequately pay you is overall detrimental. I worked for a company for 4 years, started as a grunt on night shift, eventually worked my way up to lead trainer, then got a day-shift role, then got an office job with the same company. I have plans to move to TN next year for schooling, and I informed them of this during my interview for the office position, and they said it would be no problem.
Fast forward six months, they tell me that they don't want to pay for a certificate that would allow me to operate in the office position; I'm being moved back to night shift. I did it for one week and put my two weeks in. If an employer doesn't respect you, cut ties and get the fuck out as soon as possible.

@@KKzErstorungi guess it depends on what the job is and what your real efforts are being put. A lot of people work their jobs in order to do something else they actually care about, that might not make them money. If this is the case, totally and absolutely do not give an inch more than what you are asked. Period. And that is not slacking. Disappointed again. Another superficial conversation that does not take into account the current economical landscape and class analysis. Proceeds to paint the younger generation as being "too soft".
Simple point to consider. Are people being overworked or not? If minimum wage had kept up with inflation and productivity it would be over $20 per hour. If you are being payed a rate that barely keeps up with the financial stresses of society you will feel overworked.
Also, and this is anecdotal: EVERY single boomer who has given me a lecture about how soft the millennials and GenZ have become and how "back in my day, blah blah blah", has quit within two weeks of working a "regular" job.
So I will apologize if I do not buy into her bullshit, and Mark's as well.

I generally agree that Mark’s stuff has gotten weird lately, but I’ll push back just a bit.
What is “gen z”? Where is gen z? I mean that literally. Based on recent stats gen z have been doing quite well relative to the millennials actually, but the political and social climate is profoundly different. Min wage here is also $20, which is much different from the federal rate. The cold hard truth (in my experience) is that you cannot be complacent, and humans need to be active: use it or lose it. I’m using active extremely broadly, but by that I mean physically, intellectually, socially, etc. You don’t socialize? Goodbye social ties and community support. Dont use your brain? Brain fog, memory issues, early onset dementia, you name it. Don’t walk further than your car? Say hello to joint problems, depression, weight gain.
It sucks how hard it all is. Sometimes stuff falls through, but the point is to continue to strive. That’s how people live long and healthy lives. That’s how change is also made, by continuing to work at a problem continuously. And we need people on this planet right now who give a shit and actually put in the work.
There’s significant other criticisms to be made about this video (including yes her background) but that’s been covered enough lol.

    Pretty much sums it up...
"Go understand the whole financial landscape and what all your options are, and become super highly skilled in the thing that seems easiest to you, but is harder to other people. And then go see who will pay you the most for those skills. And after they have paid you a certain amount of money, see if you understand enough to go recreate the skills for yourself somewhere else, or invest the money that you've now learned how to make. "

As a fan, lately I feel like Mark Manson has been caught in the influencer bubble and is out of touch with what regular people's lives are like. And he's surrounding himself by others who are doing the same.
His recent content also gives me a boomer "I bought my house for dirt cheap 20 years ago; todays kids are lazy" vibes mixed with some Jordan Peterson right-wing content for young men type of vibes.
Maybe this is where he's at in his life. Surrounding himself by other rich entrepreneurs/youtubers, and they mostly discuss things that are only relevant to them. Things which are really prevelant issues for youtubers and such, but not what most people actually care about. Which is fine. But if you're trying to make a channel for millions of people, it's just not going to relate to everyone.

But it doesn’t - it rewards owners, lobbyists, the sociopathic, the psychopathic, the narcissistic, the families of those that already have money, power and access, and the corrupt. People that are able to make a huge impact through pure talent are the rarity. This person seems to think people are generally lazy and need to step up their game. Tell me again how a doctor on a 90 hour week or a teacher teaching 40 kids on close to minimum wage needs to step up their game to be exceptional.

I don't believe the intention is for people who are burning themselves out to burn themselves out further... I will say from my personal experience, I started a large personal side project a few months ago, and its taken me dramatically more time and effort than I realized. I think it's easy to have seen the people who are successful in my target field as being lucky, and maybe they were on some level, but I think it's easier to call people sociopaths, psychopaths, narcissist's, etc. then ever actually try. It gives a good soothing to the ego that I'm already working too hard and if I try anymore I might end up like those weirdos. I will say in taking my own project, it had the opposite effect from what I expected. I used to come home from work burned out and just play video games, but by having something I'm owning and working on, it's given me a lot more energy and mental resources to the point where I do my day job better and I still have several hours of energy at the end of the day for my own project. I've had friends who went from being 80 hour week doctors to getting jobs in medical research where they cut their hours in half, and they have more time for helping develop future long term solutions, as well as doing further work on the subjects in their own time. There's new ways to be a teacher with online courses and classes where they can use those skills and monetize them differently. There are endless pivots these days, they might not make you a millionaire, but plenty can make you a livable wage that still frees up your time.

I had to spend all my hours off work recovering from work. It was sucking my physical and mental energy. I am now self employed doing something I find meaningful and I can work for 12 hrs without noticing. Oh, I also work with my husband. I feel recharged by work, not drained. About the whole 'overworked' thing. Often there is this expectation set, that we are in a rush and we have to achieve things, but it's not clear needs exactly to be achieved. Basically people are being busy, but spinning in a place. Often you rely on someone else giving you a green light on the particular thing in 10 places for that one task, so you just basically run around being busy without achieving anything because you don't have the space set up where you can just sit and work. You might also want to look at the ways work has changed when looking at the statistics of hours worked ”on the clock”. Looking at email/Slack/etc after hours is also work that just will not get tracked anywhere.
I would even go as far as saying that putting those boundaries up of not doing work on your free time will allow you to be the high performer at work because you are able to think clearly (and question things), deliver what you promised because you are able to manage your work since you are not fucking tired all the time.

They use our love for our work to help justify salaries below what people deserve. When you show that you love your job, that’s just an invitation to be paid less because they know you will stay. It’s hard to love a job you’re not compensated for.

Here is a summary of the key points from the conversation between Mark Manson and Codie Sanchez:
Codie started writing online in 2020 when the pandemic hit, focusing on contrarian thinking and helping people understand money and business. She believes money is the key to making a real difference in the world.
As a journalist covering the US-Mexico border, Codie realized money, not just awareness, was needed to help people. This led her to pursue a career in finance.
Codie and Mark discuss how struggling and being pushed to improve is important for happiness and success. Mark shares how he likes the challenge of improving his content when videos underperform.
They note how average work hours are at historic lows, yet many people feel overworked. High performers willing to work hard have a huge advantage in the current environment.
Codie wants to see more women in business focused on winning and success rather than just female empowerment. The business/money space is still male-dominated.
Social media tends to put people into demographic bubbles and assume the worst in others. Mark tries to interpret triggering things charitably.
Codie cares too much what people she respects think of her work. Mark struggles with delegating control of his content to others.
The overall themes touch on the importance of hard work, handling social media, and the gender dynamics still present in the business world. Both share challenges with not caring what others think.

I feel there’s a connection between women and the things readily associated with “too feminine” that gives this highlighting of women ceos or women supporting women events a strong sense of validity and legitimacy. Exactly because pink color or crocheting or manifesting gets to be laughed at, mocked at, not seen as professional, many women don’t feel welcomed. Personal opinions aside, even if these things aren’t “real” or “serious,” they are a kind of product that aims at people who, for whatever reasons, have a genuine need for them and this is just as important as anything else. Spending time, energy and resources becoming fluent in them does mean, in many cases, that it is about the gendered experience that women share. In fact, I’d argue that whatever business it is, it is all gendered and the reason why we don’t see it is exactly what calls for our attention and recognition of how deeply gendered everything is and has been and continues to be.

Sure we might be “clocking” in less but we are available everywhere with devices. Being pinged non stop in the knowledge work sector is not natural to our brain. Sure I can try to limit work email, IM’s but what if those are metrics the Boss is looking at? It implies a cultural shift is needed. Work more on meaningful stuff including outside of work is key and should be preached as an overall life balance.

I love Codie's life story and thanks for the book recommendation. The new studio is looking good as well. Super proud of you man I remember reading your blog/model at 14-15 years old in 2012 when I had a hard time in high school and it helped me quite a bit. Also, the comment about men and women content consumerism splitting is so true. May be why when I talk to my millennial friend they seems more chill / less embedded in a "gender war" since they grew during the time where the content was split 50/50 but when I talk to my GEN Z counterpart it's as if men and women have their own camp.
If I can share a story like I've seen a graph of men and women who identify as feminist, and the generation that had the highest level of feminist and closest levels among men/women were the millenials but for Gen Z womens identify more as feminist and mens less. One time I debated with friends and told nonchalantly that I support women and their cause therefore I am a feminist but my friend told me that men cannot be feminist and that mens are trash and I was kind of taken back. I think those type of statement just make the situation worse and work against the cause/message.
Love the analogy with surfing, moving to the next thing. Particularly knowing you love to surf and the fact that you keep adapting your content, moving forward

I have been following Mark for quite some time, because I always found his insights on life to be really valuable and contain lots of wisdom. But this podcast episode especially and some of his most recent episodes have been so incredibly off the Mark (pun intended). His advice has taken this "Gen Z bad", somewhat conservative pivot, that rather than providing real actionable advice and value to people, instead comes off as glib and misinformed at best, and as greedy rage-bait at worst.
Codie Sanchez is a controversial podcast guest to have on. She is in the same vein of those financial influencers who promise get rich quick schemes and quick financial freedom if you just buy their $10,000 course (that's right, she actually has a $10k course) on how to make money buying small businesses. And if you fail its because you didn't "work hard enough". It serves as a cover for her ass when you fail despite buying their eggregiously overpriced course. She takes advantage of desperate people who don't know any better. I am incredibly disappointed that Mark and his team had such a person on his podcast.
Not to mention that in this conversation, he agress with her all her talking points, doesn't challenge her, or provide any value or actionable advice to the audience. The message of this podcast is just "Work Harder". Why? On what? For what? What happened to the deep thinking, existentialist, didn't give a f*ck Mark Manson, who wrote well-thought out, and valuable self-help, for everyday people? Please do not fall into the trappings of get-rich self help content.

3:42 I'm surprised this question came up, and honestly, underwhelmed by the answer and conversation around it. I mean, hasn't feminism been discussing this particular issue for a long time and then when women finally enter the conversation you have a bunch of men having a tantrum? Like medicine, law, etc. Why haven't women had this conversation? Because, in the West, over the last century, it was drilled that it wasn't a woman's role in society to make money, and now, you men like Charlie Kirk saying there are no gender inequalities but that women are ahead. This is the case for some, but the majority are still dealing with misogynistic fathers and educators. The term Girl Boss came in an attempt to claim a space, however, it is a space designed for men. You can't fit women into male boxes, you need to craft a whole new element that was destroyed in the past century. For centuries it was a woman's role to manage finances. The topic is an entire cultural thesis that has local, social, economic and cultural implications. This entire conversation was honestly disappointing. It had its valuable insights, but for the most part, third graders can give more in-depth analyses

For anyone else who's been seeing Mark's guest become more and more worrisome you aren't alone 💚 I think this is the beginning of Mark becoming someone who is way more intense, way more combative, way less empathetic, and becoming a platform that no longer values hearing peoples experience because he's already made up his mind that they are just whiney or entitled. I hope Im wrong Mark. But fuck dude, your guests, some of the things youve said lately, I hope you don't become another Joe Rogan

Hard disagree with some of these points. I switched companies to apply my in-demand skills and a shot at higher pay. Instead I Was stonewalled into never actually being allowed to apply my skills and then having to navigate office politics only to be let go unceremoniously. Now I sit here unemployed with an overdrawn bank account being told to just work harder lol

She is so full of herself.
She thinks she’s subtle. But she is far from it.
    However, great financial success story.

This episode fascinates me because there are some very interesting ideas and studies being tied too unsubstantiated hot takes. So many points in the conversation feel like they're saying 1+1 therefore 23... There are some pretty big ideological leaps without clear evidence.
I am all about radical ownership and embracing the work required to succeed, but it seems like the recent guest on this podcasts are stopping short of saying "kids these days are too woke and lazy". It's disappointing because I had always viewed Mark as someone who was able to share hard truths like the "disappointment panda" without embracing the monotone, culture of hustler self-help. I regularly work more than 40 hours per week and care about my career success, but this "kids are lazy" take is what is truly lazy.
