congrats, you just found a bs excuse. it is not. it's like motivational media. if you need motivation you already lost. move on. it's better to have an end in shock than having a shock without end.
Equally as good to have people that don’t believe in you and your motivation be to prove them wrong. What you’ve just said sounds like an excuse. This message probably sounds rude but it’s not entirely what’s intended
"it's not the thing you're chasing that makes you feel good. It's the chasing itself." - 100% agree. This is along the lines of Dr. Srikumar Rao's suggestion to invest in the process, not the outcome. Thanks for sharing.
I watched a podcast (Mel Robbins maybe) where the guest talked about how we expect the dopamine hit to be the biggest at the end as we reach our goal, but it actually is highest during the process of obtaining it.
Thank you. Heavy ADHD, attempts to escape by stimulating with substances with a thousand projects waiting in the queue... Your videos help me reset the bullshit cycle in my mind. And that always leads to a degree of hope.
This is the real deal! This video goes into the science of procrastination without overwhelming people. Procrastination is quite simple. It involves tweaking your surroundings, a system of rewards and punishments that makes bad decisions challenging and good decision fun, breaking down big tasks into smaller, manageable steps, and, lastly: JUST. DOING. IT! ((Also, not being smart 🤣🤣))
The social pressure thing really doesn't work for me. In fact it kind of does the opposite. If I don't keep up with what I said and someone calls me out on it, it tends to make me just give up entirely. I found that it's better to tell no one and feel no pressure. Then just do it, and it feels nice when people comment about your success later.
I think that has to do with the dysfunctional beliefs that failure is bad, and the overpowering shame that comes with it. If you can get someone who isn't going to think less of you for failing, but will stay by ur side and help you get back up again, and you can learn that take on that same mindset, I think their form of social pressure is very healthy. Unfortunately, it's rare to find someone such as that on your life.
This is the final line of truth I needed to read. Thank you, Mark! "Every problem of inaction is ultimately a problem of emotion". I've got so many things to do on my fifo list, that it's just insane to think of it. And that is allways getting emontionaly in the way and stopping me.. So that finally is THE core reason, WHY I am procrastinating so often, yet I am successfull and could achieve so much more (selfemployed for 10 years allready). Thank you, Mark, from the depths of my dark and anxious soul for this golden line of truth. Only the best wishes to you!
Mark - That was a good clear and concise video with a lot of meat and no extra fluff. Your communication skills and authenticity are much appreciated. I will always make time to watch your videos.
5:30 the do something overcomes my particular procrastination issue, related to perfectionism, especially with the rumination of my introvert self, but never really thought about it that way. I spend so much time thinking about how to do it that it becomes a cost and I don’t want to waste the time I spent and have it go wrong. I started working out and rather than focusing on a deadline or specific target (size, aesthetic), I focused on getting better, iterative improvement. Now, instead of focusing on getting it perfect out of the gate, or having every workout be ideal, I just focus on getting into the gym that day because once I get dressed, shoes on and get there, nothing to do but go to work and even if I don’t work as hard that day, it’s still progress and ACTION TOWARD MY GOAL!
Really loving this new style of videos where you help and interact with other people ! The podcast style episodes are great as well, but these are definitely on a whole other level ! Keep up the good work Mark !
I love this so much because I am myself a master procrastinator. I push everything off because I overthink it that doesn’t get me anywhere this video gave me a different insight about failing and how it’s not really considered a failure because you’ve tried and you’ve learned from the experience!
“Do something” 100%, my personal experience that backs that up is I’ve had to do big jobs at work and I’ve done a small portions them. After finishing the first small portion I’ve decided to do another small portion and not long after I’ve found that I have completed the big jobs which seemed overwhelming!.
Man your videos are building me piece by piece. Every video brings me one step forward, and don't worry, I'm starting to do, not just enjoy this self-help rush and then do nothing. You're currently the best, and most honest, for real.
"Every time I watch your videos, I feel like I’m making a little more progress toward my goals. Your passion for personal development shines through, and it's contagious. Thank you for making such meaningful content!"

Not that I'm saying that you have to be stupid to get anything done, naturally. I have this problem myself.
a timely reminder for me to move. I work as a business mentor, so motivating people and I didn’t find it motivated me because I saw all the hard work they had to do. awww your advices are so clear, concise, positive. and the stories you tell to illustrate them is priceless. I feel like I have learned so much in just a few minutes. thank you a lot for sharing these tips, the time you take to do it , thank you !
Great video! Not sure about the incentive take tho. I recall that Huberman says that you should avoid getting used to incentives every time you accomplish something. You can utilize the flipping coin method. If you win you get an incentive, if you lose you don't. The point is that internal motivation is the strongest drive for our actions, the best results come from enjoying the process of what you are doing. If you get used to get a reward you will be less motivated because you're doing that for external reasons. (I hope my english was understandable enough 😅)
hey mark i need videos like these. condensed and on point. please try making more videos like these. I watch these kind of videos more than podcasts. i will try your podcasts and thanks for this one.
because we are all Gen Z watching this (mostly) we expect gen z self-improvement content with stupid memes and shit. and I'm saying that being part of Gen Z. your content is so authentic it makes me want to laugh and do 100 pushups at the same time! I've read your book and it really helped me and is still helping me with social skills so I'm very grateful for everything you provide the world mark. thanks so much!
This is the kind of video we want . We want to see you man.....Don't the f**king podcasts with some unknown persons giving solutions in a boring way . Love You Mark
I got up. I didn't go get coffee first. I went and got my laptop out of the closet. And I plugged it in cuz it was dead. And it's now sitting on the couch beside me. The last chapter I wrote is titled "Now We Swerve". 7 months ago. Staring at me accusingly. And I'm kind of amazed because now, I'm swerving 😂 What kind of sorcery is _this!?_ Subscribed.
Hidden Time Wealth is so unique. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard about it sooner. It’s amazing how life-changing this can be for anyone battling procrastination.
When I was 15, I only had one goal. To secure a hundred percent in my final exams. Yep, it was so silly and childish as anything, but that's something that had me all excited at that age. And I also had a good plan that had worked for many toppers before that. And I remember that was probably one of the most productive years of my life. I had a goal, and a reliable plan that could almost guarantee success. (Bad that the exams got cancelled due to covid later lmao.) After that, I lost the hold of everything because I had goals but no ways to achieve them. Like there was no one to tell me, do this and you'll achieve it. And in fact whoever did achieve those goals before me that I had aimed for, had started much earlier. So, that brought a sense of being too late in my mind. Demotivating af. Lost all my time procrastinating to think about it and plan everything for myself. I still don't have a lot of clarity about how can I achieve all that I want. And I keep procrastinating figuring out a way to it. Hope I do figure it out soon. 🙂
2 ways: 1)do research specifically into how to accomplish each goal. Of course you’ve tried already. Do more. Do something different. 2)do anything. See if it brought you closer or farther away, and proceed accordingly. Remember the children’s party game where the one kid looks for the hidden keys while the others yell “hot, cold”. The only way to fail this game is to stand still
@@M_SCYep. I tried the first point already, in fact since the past 3 years, I've been in that loop. I tried searching for one clear way, like a clear path to everything that I wanna achieve. But the conclusion, that I know I realised way too late because of procrastinating all the time was only that there's no specific guaranteed way. It's like a lot of luck is involved there and doesn't matter how hard I or anyone tries, no one can figure out a plan that can guarantee success. And that only made me realise that real life is so different from schools and exams. There's no time table that can guarantee success. Real life is in fact like a chess game, where I can't plan all the moves in the beginning of the game, there's a lot that I will have to figure out as I keep playing. That requires me to be mentally alert and use my analysation skills everytime like we do before a nee move. It's the only way and there's no magical plan that I can blindly follow like a bunch of books for school exams. Tough realisation, but that's a fact and I have to accept it.
Lmao, that's similar to my story. The difference between us is that covid postponed our exams and I did really well, topper of 7 districts in my state. But the aftermath is not so good. I procrastinated a lot, don't have any kind of goal, got some personal issues and now I feel like shit.😊
People with ADHD are prone to struggle with procrastination *because* it is, absolutely, a feelings thing. It is thought that their brains find it harder to work past and with the *feeling* of "not wanting to do it" because of the way they are wired. They find it more challenging to force themselves to focus on things that are not, in the moment, the most stimulating option ("I'm bored" or "this isn't urgent enough right now") Specifically it's the way ADHD impacts emotional regulation (and the dysregulation of the brain's dopamine reward/motivation system). A lot of the advice is universal, but it can be challenging! And people with brains that are far enough over on the spectrum to hit the 'clinical diagnosis' threshold will probably wrestle more with it, even as the same tips and principles to combat procrastination apply. (I do not have time to watch the vid right now; apologies if this is already covered). (Editing for clarity)
It's so much worse than that. Because our dopamine systems don't work correctly, there is no satisfaction in a job well done. There is no reward, ever. I don't feel pride when I complete a project, even if it's something I'm really into, I'm just glad it's finally over.
The only real thing covered was perhaps environmental adjustments that make things easier for the target. Not an example used in the video but a goal to keep dirty clothes off the bedroom floor can be managed by changing your environment to have the dirty clothes hamper in the bedroom or bathroom rather than the laundry. Still no happy brain chemical rewards as such but less obstacles in the home.
@@oliflemmer I had some food and watched a youtube reaction video of the movie Perfect. And then some of the actual movie Pitch Perfect. and now I'm baaack for another go 😂
00:57 🌍 The most crucial factor in behavior change is your environment; set it up to make your desired change inevitable. 02:24 🏆 Create incentives for yourself by setting up rewards and punishments for your behaviors to enhance motivation. 05:48 📝 Embrace the "Do Something" principle: take small, simple actions today to move towards your goal, as action is the cause, not the result, of motivation. 08:14 👥 Leverage social pressure positively to achieve goals, recognizing its power in motivating and influencing action. 10:40 🔄 Embrace failure as a tool for learning and progress; the point of goals is not just achieving them but the continuous process of taking action.
Became emotional watching this. The self doubt and potential feeling of failure was changed to someone experiencing that she had all she needed from the beginning, just needed a friend to kick her a little.

very true! your thoughts lead to your feelings, lead to your action then results
An excellent summary of how to overcome procrastination. Thanks for sharing
awww your advices are so clear, concise, positive. and the stories you tell to illustrate them is priceless. I feel like I have learned so much in just a few minutes. thank you a lot for sharing these tips, the time you take to do it , thank you !
Failure is the pillar of success
Do something principle has proven true in my life as well, even for bigger dreams. Agree 100%!
Brilliant thank you !
Every Monday, I set weekly goals & commit to doing ONE thing to move the goal closer
hey mark i need videos like these. condensed and on point. please try making more videos like these. I watch these kind of videos more than podcasts. i will try your podcasts and thanks for this one.
i maybe take a few of these words back
Maybe try doing something actually?
Love this! This is just what I needed. Thank you! I have been procrastinating a lot more lately and I want off this Hamster Wheel!
"Just do it. it's not big of a deal. Just by doing anything, you learn something."

I saved this video to my watch later list.
Now I am watching it.
This is the kind of video we want . We want to see you man.....Don't the f**king podcasts with some unknown persons giving solutions in a boring way . Love You Mark
Wow, this is one of the best pieces of content I've come across on RUclips in a long time
I procrastinated before watching this and I'm watching this while procrastinating my homework
This is beautiful! Way to go!!!
Dude, we need to see you train for your marathon! :)
I got up. I didn't go get coffee first. I went and got my laptop out of the closet. And I plugged it in cuz it was dead. And it's now sitting on the couch beside me. The last chapter I wrote is titled "Now We Swerve". 7 months ago. Staring at me accusingly. And I'm kind of amazed because now, I'm swerving 😂
What kind of sorcery is _this!?_

(Bad that the exams got cancelled due to covid later lmao.)
After that, I lost the hold of everything because I had goals but no ways to achieve them.
2 ways:
1)do research specifically into how to accomplish each goal.
@@nothingbuttamil8988I feel you, mate. 🤝
Mark has this funny way of teaching making hard things easier. I love it.
Did you ever get around to watching it in the end 😂
@@oliflemmer I had some food and watched a youtube reaction video of the movie Perfect. And then some of the actual movie Pitch Perfect. and now I'm baaack for another go 😂

Thanks Mark, put this on my watch later playlist, will def watch soon!!
I think about procrastination all the time, this video is helping with that.
For those of you who haven’t read Atomic Habits, this is all you need to possibly know about it.
Became emotional watching this. The self doubt and potential feeling of failure was changed to someone experiencing that she had all she needed from the beginning, just needed a friend to kick her a little.
