Just a query on the rode wireless go 2. I use the same system as you do except its attached to a gopro 10 with media mod (unfortunately 😢), volume (gain) can be adjusted on the receiver unit of the rode down to -32. I find at this setting my voice is usually crisp and clear and the engine noise from my crf300l is not at all intrusive. Lavalier mikes are good too, but very unreliable with gopro. At least with transmitter in helmet if gopro stops recording audio (more likely WHEN it stops, not if), the sound is still there. Anyway, just thought I'd add that for people who are considering a rode wireless. Ultra reliable, adjustable, great battery life and storage capacity
Fantastic video. I was so disappointed with the picture quality from my Insta360 X3 that I thought there was something wrong with the camera. You are the only person who has explained why! I was going to go down the GoPro route but discovered the DJI mics and Osmo Actions, so now own them. If the videos from my Tiger 1200 are even half as good as yours, I’ll be over the moon. You have a new subscriber 😊
Hi not sure if you remember I was picking your brain re settings on the action 4 recently Just wanted to say I went on a classic bike shoot this weekend using your advice and it’s hands down the best onboard footage and sound I have ever created Thank you so much Cheers Mike
Just ordered a dji mic, havent got a clue how they work yet but my 360 vids are dull without sound... so I'm hear learning little by little... Thanks dude, been watching a few of your vids, always enjoyable.
Hi Dave. You’ve just cost me £500!!!!!!! Based on your videos and advice, last week I bought the DJI Action 4 camera, wireless mic, and just had to buy the new wireless remote too. Not only that, I’ve now ordered the Telesin ND Filters!! Man, you’re costing me a fortune! So, now that you’ve done that, could you PLEASE keep your Masterclasses coming, as I’m confused. If you don’t, I’ll be paying you a visit for some one-to-one tuition. 😂👍
Sir, you just made buy both camera and microphone setup... Watching this for the second time just to make sure I record in my head all of your amazing advice. I do plan on using this in a caterham 7 style car for recording the engine noise and maybe me mumbling in the helmet... I look forward to some videos about ND Filters, thanks again for the videos and useful advice 😁👍🏼
Brilliant vid Dave and an excellent idea, most of us know jack about the cameras! Just turn em on and press record! Looking forward to more enlightenment from the Master!
I've started using a usb c to usb c cable to plug the dji receiver into the A3 itself because i started having audio issues with it plugged directly into the camera. It works perfectly. But I did need to buy a cage for the A3 so I can use the cold shoe to place the receiver on.
I like how clear your voice sounds and pair with the second transmiter for the engine sound. I have a DJI Mic and have been playing around with the settings. What settings do you use when using both transmitters? gains for receiver and transmiters? low cut enable? Thank you!
excellent. looking forward to the rest of the series, and since you just touched upon the questions, i imagine this series will keep you busy for awhile. Win win.
Hi, great video but still I don't think adding an extra DJI mic receiver will work while riding at high speeds. Im using a usbc to trs female boya adapter and connected to rode lavalier 2 and the audio is really really bad. DJI needs to fix this asap as this is getting frustrating now. GoPro works great right out of the box and DJI simply doesnt work for the audio via external mic.
Great value Dave! I am usually a silent but regular viewer. It was the Insta360 One X2 video, that hooked me up with your channel and I am excited for this new series. Thanks, from Sydney, Australia.
Hi Dave, I have literally no idea what you were talking about...🤣🙈, but I watched and enjoyed the video anyway!!. And realised my GoPro hero 4 definitely needs an upgrade!. Thanks for sharing wisdom on this matter 🙏, cheers, Steve
Brilliant video… Have you done further experiments on the best place to fit the second mic for improved bike (engine, induction, exhaust) sounds? And tips on how to Mount the camera in a safe way? I would be scared of loosing the second mic…
What a great Video Dave. I’ve been experiencing with my newly DJI mic and this was very clever. I’m using my DJI Action 2 at the moment. I was debating to get the Action 3, but I opted to purchase the X3. Excited for my information as I’m learning a ton to be creative for my channel. Cheers! Amazing content.
Brilliant video. I know your mate, the great TMF, had issues with his setup during his recent Q&A vid. Given the quality of this one, I suspect he would appreciate this video and the benefit of your professional wisdom. As do we all . Thank you
Yes I saw that. I don’t understand how people suffer all the GoPro problems still? It’s only a matter of time before someone tries to legally challenge GoPro for valuable footage they’ve lost…🎥👍
Great informative video and love the channel...Im not much of a vlogger but love just being out on my Triumph and capturing the fantastic Irish scenery,I wonder could you recommend a dslr camera
Thanks! The camera I used to film this vlog is the Sony A7siii and is amazing but if tied to a budget then the new Sony ZV-1 and ZV-e10 cameras are brilliant.👍
hi great video. thanks for all videos you upload explaining all stuff. one question, when i say start recording on osmo mic, camera normally start recording and in that moment on osmo action 3 display i have pop message "4k60 recording.voice control disable" and i cant stop recording via voice command. But, when i put framerate to 50 everything work properly. Thank you in advance.
Hiya Dave, great all round video. Is it possible to turn the microphone off whilst riding and recording video footage ? if so, is it then possible to add voice over commentary when editing ? Many thanks in advance.
So how do you mix the two mics on your video. Do you use stereo option? How was the voice so clear when the 2nd mic was not close to your mouth. Thanks
hello there Dave, I don't live too far from you, Perhaps we could meet up some day, anyway my question is, where is the best place to buy the Osmo Action 3 motorcycle kit from, I absolutely love you video, keep them coming, I live near Rathfriland
I use stereo only for some separation but if you’re using two mics then take the audio directly from the transmitter by plugging them into your computer and then extracting the files. You can then fine tune a mix and it then doesn’t really matter if you record in mono or stereo if you don’t mind doing a bit more work in post.
@@WheelieGoodTV gonna play around with that and a bit of post editing.. I did make this though with one mic and wow, you were not wrong, amazing audio quality: ruclips.net/video/fqVBlDbzaEA/видео.html
Wow, that’s an informative video Dave. Definitely the Dobermans undercarriage!!!!!!!! Can now see me me buying a DJI this year as you have covered the basics and made it look so easy for the novices. How do I get a Wheelie Good TV shirt and cap?
Very informative video & looking forward to your next one. Subbed! I bought the Saramonic U3A because it's on DJI's compatible list with the bonus of not needing any adaptors, tried it out this afternoon and even at -12dB it's still too hot even at low speeds. Mic with deadcat clipped low down the front of my jacket & so behind screen/fairing (Burgman 400).
Love this video, this is the setup I now have after my Rode microphone ruined an entire day filmed. Question if I may. I saw another video that said if you use an ND filter and were going to change shutter speed to double frames, you HAD to turn off rocksteady as the footage would come out all jittery. He said the only way you can get stable footage on this cam with ND filter was with a gimble. Is that so?
Thanks Stevie. That’s not totally correct as it works perfectly if you have enough light and there is no jitter at all whilst using filters with RockSteady on.
Thanks for the note. Yes the charging cradle is very handy. Will see how my wired mic works out and if I get into the whole RUclips thing then might buy the twin pack or a new helmet or a day nav or new jacket or new boots.. the never ending spend in my motorbike hobby.
Hi Dave just ordered the dji action 3 and dji mic have spoke before about best settings what do you recommend for motto vlogging ? My RUclips now comes up with grandpa rides motorcycles 😂 as granddaughter says it when she see me !!! Keep up the great vids Dave regards John phillips
Ah good man John! I have a few vids up there now with all the settings. Obvs depends on what you want to do. Basic settings I use are 16:9 50fps, natural colour, iso 100-800 and shutter speed of 100.
I connect a purple panda lab mic to usb c adapter and it works well on the action 3. Have yet to test it on the bike. Not all usb c to 3.5mm adapters work apparently so I bought one that was tested by another RUclipsr. The mic also came with other adapters and cables so I can use it on my dslr also. Thanks as always for the vids.
Hello again Dave, hope you are well, The Harvey Norman store in Belfast hadn't a clue what I was talking about, did you get your kit in Dublin, I too have an Aprilia RSVR Mille, 2000 model in excellent condition, I would like to send you some photos but don't know where to send them, thanks again.
Click the link below my videos Bunty to get the Osmo. It arrives within a week so I’m told and quite often they put in a free gift. Same price as Harvey Norman you just have to wait a few days. Send me photos at wheeliegoodvideos@gmail.com
Cheers Dave, so many of my questions answered and so much information i hadn't realised or knew. I have given up using the Insta X3 in Conjunction with the DJI action 3, because as you show, the difference in quality was so obvious, which in all honesty i didn't understand why at 5.7k v 4k, i do now. Although this wont matter now, i used a very cheap Lavalier microphone £13 off Amazon to cope with the zero only sensitivity and this gave better audio than the Rode version. Then i added the DJI wireless mic on your recommendation....Never looked back and a whole new world of quality audio arrived. Superb video Dave. keep em coming!

Hi Dave, Great video! I’ve bought the action 3 and wireless mic because of you 😂. Now here it goes more money ! Have you had the chance to see how this system time code synching actually works in case you have 2 action 3 cameras? Do you need an external device? Assuming you mount one to record yourself and the other one on the chin, how do actually set this up? Via the app? This would be game changer for motovlogging
Hi, I haven’t actually used the timecode between similar cameras but will probably do so this summer as I’ve a good few longer trips planned. I’m led to believe the timecode works through the app and no other device is needed. As soon as I get the other camera I’ll make a vid on this. 👍🎥
Yeah John, if the receiver is in then there’s no need to sync. The sound is on the same file as the picture and already synced. No worries man, that’s why I’m making this series. Enjoy. 👍🎥🏍
@@WheelieGoodTV hi thanks for that so if the receiver is in the side of the action 3 if you press record on the camera or use the voice command it will record audio from the mic ?? Cheers Dave
Great vid nice your passing on you skills you have learned. I've got the pocket 2 it's probably my best camera wish I hadn't got insta 360 now. I do like DJI Mike thanks take care
Yeah that’s another thing worthy of an episode Gareth. I use the Sony A7siii with a Sony Gmaster 16-35 f2:8 lens. Stupid money but quality is ridiculous. 👍🎥🤣
@@WheelieGoodTV A suggestion for your next video on this topic if I may, looking at my own footage from today and as it goes on, dirt on the lens becomes more and more visible. How do you deal with that when you’re filming?
Hi Dave, thanks for video! I wanted to ask, you mention that you use -8db on the Receiver Gain, however when I connect the DJI action pro camera with DJI mic using USB C Adapter, changing the Receiver Gain doesn't do anything. Whether it's -12db or +12db. Only making changes in transmitter and camera itself actually make audible difference. I also checked the video on DJI official webpage (DJI Mic Basic Operation) and it says at 3:37 mark that "The Receiver Gain can only be adjusted when connected with analog port devices, such as 3.5mm jack or IOS adapter. USB C Ports are not compatible". I recorded multiple videos in static environment using your setup. I kept the DJI Camera Gain and DJI Mic Transmitted Gain the same and only made changes to Receiver Gain, and there was no difference. Was your experience different? I thought my mic is faulty, but since on their page they say USB C doesn't work, I wonder if it might be just a placebo when we hear a difference. It might actually require USB C to 3.5mm jack dongle to hear a difference when changing Receiver Gain. What do you think? I wanted to edit that I tried the IOS adapter and changing gain worked. When you go on DJI Webpage www.dji.com/mic/video and check the basic operations vide and go to 3:35 to 3:37 it says in captions on the bottom that USB C is not supported to change Receiver Gain. Weird.
Interesting observation, @J0rdy2010 I'm using a USB-C to 3.5mm jack (Boya BY-K4) with an inexpensive Movo lavalier mic, and for motorcycle audio recording....still too much gain.
Great informative video, I was considering between the Insta360 and the Osmo 3, but watching your content has made my mind up for two reasons, 10bit and a biggy for me, time stamp. Just one question... I was watching another RUclipsr, and he was saying that using an ND is great for achieving the 180 degree rule, using an ND on an Action camera plays havoc with the cameras in built stabilisation. As an experienced commercial cameraman, is there any truth in this? Tia
Hi, ND filters work perfectly with stabilisation unless the light is too low and therefore the shutter speed is too slow. I have a video hopefully being released next week all about ND filters and why they’re used. 🎥👌
Another question, I hope you don’t mind. Did you find a sweet spot with the wireless mic in your helmet, whereby you had decent voice but still plenty of exhaust sound too ? I would prefer not to go down the route of using the second mic in the tail bag, then introduce it in editing. If it has to be, then so be it. Thanks in advance.
@@WheelieGoodTV thanks for the reply Dave, really appreciate it. I hope you don’t mind, but I put a link to your channel on one of my video descriptions.
Hey matey, question... You're comparing the picture quality between the x3 and the dji... Aren't they totally different cameras, one being a 360? Excuse me if I come across as ignorant. Thanks. ☺
It’s not really a comparison as you say they are totally different cameras. It’s more an explanation leading on to what the bit rate is since I’m constantly asked why a 5.7K camera doesn’t look as good as 4K.
Hi, yes you can but you will need a splitter cable from Amazon. You will then need an audio adapter from DJI for the Action3 and they are like hens teeth. I’ve tried third party adapters and they just don’t work.
Hi mate I don’t want a GoPro as they over heat n cut off. Been looking at dji action cam adventure pack. Would you recommend it for bike films? I ride a Cb500x 2022 red passed my test feb 13th
Hi Dave, thanks for the video! You are mentioning the rubber band securing the DJI Mic to the Action 3, but..... In the middle of the Action 3 Logo just under the lens, you can see a silver round hole, and that's the sensor for the white balancing. When you cover it, how does it involve your video? Keep up the good work!
Great video, thank you. Here's a little poser for you Sir! On my old GoPro Hero 7 with the dreaded gopro mic adapter, I was able to have a splitter ( i think it was actually called a stereo breakout cable) from the mic adapter with one going to a mic to record my voice, and the other going to a splitter from the speaker output from the Cardo intercom. Essentially, the GoPro recorded me, and my mates all at the same time. Sometimes it was brilliant, but after that mic adapter got seriously wet, it wasn't so brilliant. My question if I may, is it possible to have two inputs going into the A3 via the usb c at the same time to record both? ie: via a usb c to dual trrs female if they make such a thing?
Yep I remember that handy little splitter well. Unfortunately with USB C it’s not possible. What some lads are doing now is recording the audio and comms on a separate Zoom recorder and syncing in the edit. Hope that helps.
@@WheelieGoodTV After I posted this, someone from the dji forum directed me to a German chap who uses the Rode AI Micro to get it to do it. That makes it able to take two mics/one mic and a feed from the intercom speakers into the osmo action 2, so hopefully it would work in the 3?
Brilliant start Dave to what I thing will be a great series I will look forward to them. I m still thinking of getting an Action3 the only thing that holds me back is as I like to video continuously then edit out the rubbish the camera requires external PSU which as of yet the DJI doesn't support whilst using an external microphone maybe they will soon. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍 All the best Marc
If you use the DJI mic with the camera it supports it Marc. The receiver has a USB C port which can take external power as it’s plugged into the camera. This should also be the case with the standard mic adapter when DJI release it. Obviously I haven’t been able to try this but on the Insta 360 cameras with mic adapters this works all the time. It was the only way I was able to keep the GoPro powered for any longer than half an hour. 👍🎥🏍
@@WheelieGoodTV Cheers Dave I will look into that and start saving if they bring out an adaptor as was available for the Old DJI Action I would pull the plug now All the best Marc
I'm learning and I understand why to use ND filters but in other video reviews they said it will break rocksteady stabilization and you will have to use 3 axes gimbal to make footage stable, however, I've never seen anyone having a gimbal mounted on their helmet, so is it really worth using ND filter?
If you want to start using the features to the fullest (manual) and get the best out of the camera then you need an ND filter. An ND4 is a good start but ND8 and ND16 depending on where you live are also relevant. You can buy all three in a kit.
Enjoyed the video . If only consumers realised how long these things take to do ! Well I’ve had enough of GoPro ruining my vlogging with corrupted files and having to disassemble the camera and mount every time you want to change the battery and it freezing . So, I have ordered the action 3 and awaiting its delivery . Then I read all of the focus horror stories 😢any comment to make on that with your A3. Cheers
Well i am currently attempting to record all the riders that are on coms using my gopro which ive linked to my packtalk bold so i was wondering if this was possible with the Osmo
Maybe you can help: when I record using 2 mics in stereo I still only get 1 audio channel in my editing program. As such I can’t seem to separate and individually adjust mix volume. What am I doing wrong 😅
Ive just completed my first attempt at the action4 and dji mic in back pocket. it seems the mic didnt pick up any sound but it was picked up by the mic on the camera, a lot of wind noise. not sure where to start to problem solve
Interesting. I don’t own the action 4 yet so can’t problem solve I’m afraid. Sounds like a software update though and in the meantime take the sound directly from the transmitter recorder.
@@WheelieGoodTV thanks for the response! Actually I had a look directly into the mic’s storage and there was only sounds from when I was testing at home. Seems as though when I went for the 1st ride I rushed and somehow switched the mic off when I was trying to turn it on
Really useful Dave thank you. I use a Hero 10 (that limited edition one that doesn't lock upn🤣) and fit a polariser rather than nd..... Do you think and ND4 would produce better results..... After watching this I've reset from auto to 30fps 4K with 1/60 shutter speed
Hi, yes an ND filter will produce a better overall image than a polariser. A polariser is good for getting rid of unwanted reflections by introducing heavy contrast but an ND filter enhances the entire image by balancing brightness with shade. The side effect is that you can also dial in a lower shutter speed for the correct motion blur.
Hi Dave, new to all this vlogging and a bit of an old fella with no prior knowledge. Currently got dji mic connected to GoPro hero 9. Video quality is pretty good, better since taking your advice on ND filter, thank you. However still struggling with wind noise no matter where I put the transmitter. Is there a setting to reduce it more in the dji mic have Gain set on lowest figure but not sure what else to do. What about LowCut? Shoei Neotec 2 helmet all vents closed visor down chin curtain in place. Please help it's stopping me taking the next step. Thanks Rory (Forestboy)
Hi Rory, I presume you have the supplied fluffy wind gag fitted? Low cut won’t help wind noise, that will only remove road noise (bass) through the equalisation. Another trick I’ve used in the past is to conceal a lavalier mic inside sponge. Maybe try experimenting with this inside the helmet. Not sure how many videos you’ve watched of mine lately but I now mount my DJI mic inside my snood(neck warmer) next to my mouth and hold it in place with the magnet on the other side of the snood. Hope this helps. 👊🏻🏍
@@WheelieGoodTV thanks Dave gonna try a lavilier plugged into the transmitter this morning. Trouble is it'll be picking up the sound of torrential rain. Hey ho onwards and upwards. Rory
Hi. I take all levels on the camera and DJI mic down to -10. The rocksteady only struggles if you’re using an ND filter when it’s cloudy or dull. If you use it on a sunny day then it works perfectly.
Look forward to the series Dave, I bought the Osmo Action 3 on your recommendation and it's been such an awesome camera, cheers from Australia mate ✌️🏍
Many, many thanks for this. There are so many so called "experts" on RUclips but it a real pleasure to hear from a proper pro 👍 and will incorporate some of these tips into my videos from this Masterclass. I have been playing around with the sound on the DJI 3 and can say the sound from a cheap as chips mic is acceptable for me. The firmware update made an enormous difference and makes cheap mics workable. I bought a USB C to TTRS adaptor (I think it was advertised as headset adaptor for phones without a 3.5mm jack) in order to try a wide range of cheap mics I already owned and some work better than others, positioning is key of course. Now to my question, can you take the receiver and connect on the end of a USB C extension lead so as to put it in, say, a pocket? I will be purchasing the DJI and was holding off as was not sure how the transmitter mic would sit in the helmet. Already ready looking forward to the next class👍
Hi and thanks for your kind words. I tried this out last night on the strength of your question and yes you can put the receiver on an extension lead if required. 👍🎥
@@WheelieGoodTV Game set and match 👏👏👏 Many thanks for testing. I like the uncluttered look of the camera so a single cable to the pocket works perfectly for me.
Hello Dave, I have another question. I do not have ND filters yet and have tried to set the shutter speed at 1/50 but the sky is washed out. Am I missing something or do I need the ND filter in order to lock the shutter speed?
Fab video as always Dave. I have the original Osmo action and I bought the Cynova mic adapter which works well. I purchased a cheap Lavalier Mic off Amazon and cut it down to length to fit my helmet and soldered it back together. As I`m only just about to start vlogging on my bike I feel the sound quality is pretty good, it will never be as good as the wireless setup you use but I`m happy with it at the moment. Eventually I do plan to upgrade though ! Once again, fab video. Cheers 😀😀
I'm also still on the original Osmo Action. I was using the mic adaptor for a while, but got frustrated with audio that was peaking too much. A cheap and less sensitive mic would help, I think. I now record audio separately on a Zoom F2. Good luck with the motovog!
I've watched all your video re: Osmo Action 3 + DJI Mic and in 1 video you mention -8db for the Receiver and -12db for the Transmitter. Are these the best settings you found or do you use a different combination now? I was also wondering about the direction of the Mic:pointing upward, downward or else? Thank you
I now use -10 on both and also set the camera audio to -10 too. Microphone always pointed up but I’m now thinking my audio is too clean so time to experiment some more I think 🤔…..
@@WheelieGoodTV awesome thanks. by the way I'm using strong adhesive velcro to stick the Receiver on the side of the helmet + a short angled USB-C cable (one that was provider with my drone) between the camera and the receiver. It removes the need for any adapter and makes a safer setup
Excellent work Dave, on your new Busman’s Holiday section, I’m interested in the storage your using. With your default settings I.e. 4k/ 50 , what would you expect in terms of - recording minutes / MB storage capacity on your sd card. I’m considering purchasing a 256Mb micro SD as back up, I presume you carry a spare sd card also, many thanks Dennis x
Hi Dennis, I presume you mean a 256GB not MB? 😜 these are the cards I use and at max resolution I can squeeze over 4hrs footage per card which is perfect for a days filming. I carry about 10 cards as my Action 3/Drone/Insta X3 all take the same cards which is very handy. 🎥👍
@@WheelieGoodTV Yes, I meant GB 😁, I was having a few problems with storage, I think I had PRO setting on which massively changes the size of the files. Good to know with those settings you have, can archive a substantial amount of time on 256GB, many thanks, Dennis
Great info Dave look forward to the rest of the series, I'm still doing a lot of testing in the audio, thinking of going down the 32 bit float route to solve the levels problem. I've always found absurd to make a waterproof camera that you have to make unwaterproof to plug a mike in so possibly going to use the TENTACLE TRACK E & record to that, compound that with the fact there are two of us to record which it seems none of the comms units alow you to plug a recorder in to without cutting off the speakers so will try by plugging in an extra comms unit to record the audio. thanks for the great content & effort .
The Action 3 is a great camera. Worked brilliantly while we were filming in Tenerife. As we already have the Rode wireless Go2, it's difficult to justify buying the DJI version. When we used the Action 3 filming inside at the NEC bike show, we did experience several overheat shutdowns filming in 4k. Have you had any overheat shutdown issues?
Hello. Just got a DJI Action 3. I'm shooting at 24fps. First few vids I've been shooting at 1/50 on the helmet chinbar. Seems to be a bit slow as I'm getting image shudder when I move my head/go over a bump etc.(even with IS on) Should I just up the shutter speed a bit? Thanks in advance!
It’s not the shutter speed, that’s set correctly. Try upping your ISO as this is a known phenomenon in low light with IS on. I presume your mount on your helmet is rock solid?
@@bambalam9170 try without the ND. Many people report the same problem whilst using an ND. At least you can start isolating where the problem is coming from.
I have an insta 360 X3. The comparison in bit rate between the Osmo and Insta was very interesting. Is the difference mainly because of the speed of the motorcycle? Would the Insta 360 X3 compare a lot better if you were just walking around? I suspect I know the answer. But, a lot of this stuff is not intuitive to someone like me, who lacks the knowledge.
Unfortunately not Wayne. Even if you were walking around the X3 will still be of a much lesser quality due to the bit rate I’m afraid. A future firmware upgrade could possibly help change this though.
Super great content as usual ! you answer most of the questions I had on this combo 😊 i think i'm as geeky or nerd and biker as you are A last question on the dji mic receiver : could you connect an external mic to it ? I already have a mic in the helmet and was considering to connect it to the receiver. Is it an option? Or do you need a third party adapter? Ride safe and take care ✌️
Hi Hugo? Yes you can do this but as you say an adapter is needed. DJI still don’t sell them on their website so a 3rd party one on Amazon will suffice.
@Wheelie Good TV thanks a lot Dave 👍 One more question on the dji mic. Does it turn on / off automatically when you turn on / off the action 3 or do you need to keep it the dji mic adapter "on" even if you don't film with the cam ? My point is related to the battery life duration of the mic adapter
You mentioned the Insta 360 bit rate as being about 80 but there is a slider within the Insta 360 studio app in the export dialogue that goes up to 200. I typically do mine at around 120. Are you saying that doing this doesn't actually lift the bit rate, as I've often wondered this myself? When the original Osmo Action came out there was no audio adapter and they decided to farm it out to a company called Cynova. I got one and it didn't work. Since then Boya have one as well which does seem to work.
Yes that ‘slider’ is only for the bit rate within the editing software NOT the camera unfortunately. I’ve done real world camera tests in this (which were too complicated for my video) but realistically the camera bit rate in maximum resolution is around 80mbps.
Dave, well done for introducing a fantastic source of information for those of us trying to improve our RUclips videos. I am currently using a very old school SJCam SJ 6 Legend, and although it has, and still, serves me well, going forward, I will be wanting to improve the overall viewing experience. The only downside for me, being on quite a tight budget (pensioner), is the price of the set up you have. Somewhere in the region of £700, so I will have to save up a bit. That said, I am just 100 subs off the threshold for the YT partner program, so hopefully anything earned from that, will enable me to eventually buy the Osmo 3 and wireless mic. Thanks for putting this together, much appreciated.
@@WheelieGoodTV Great stuff! I'm just making my way through all of your videos. SO helpful. You go into all the geeky fine details that seem to be missing in other videos so top marks for that. I've had a few cheap action cams for making personal videos over the last few years but only now am I publishing public videos and my quality isn't great compared to what you are achieving so thanks for lifting the curtain and sharing how to achieve such a high standard!
Dave, I assume you’re now aware that at the last DJI Action3 firmware update, it now lets us connect USB-C Lavalier mics directly into Action3 USB-C port.
Yes, I’d be interested to hear from anyone if it actually works? DJI are deliberately not releasing the adapter lead because they want everyone to buy the DJI mic.
Great video Dave 👍. You must have been reading my mind about this subject because I was going to ask you about this very thing. I know you also have the Insta360 camera and I bought the version with the 4k boost lens. I think this would be a better comparison as opposed to the 360 lens. Could you maybe compare the results with 4k boost against the action3. Don’t want to sell up and buy the action3 if there isn’t really any real world difference.
Thanks Kevin. I actually sold the Insta 360 last year otherwise as you say it would have been a more realistic comparison. What I can tell you though is that I sold it also because the bit rate and therefore overall quality suffered when the 360 module was attached.
@@WheelieGoodTV that’s a pity. The nitrate using the 4k boost lens is 100mbs so it’s not too far off. I have a question about your recording settings. I see you use 4k at 50fps. I was under the impression that you got better blurring if you used 25fps. Have I got this wrong or does it mean that if I used 25fps I’d need to use a heavier nd filter ie nd8?
@@chancha1916ks you’re completely correct about 25p and it is indeed the TV industry standard across Europe as a result of this. However, since my RUclips vids are viewed mainly in phones or tablets then a much sharper image is obtained by using 50p which in theory is twice the information for better resolution on a smaller screen. I think 50p looks awful on a full size TV.
Hi Dave, Finally I managed to sit down and give this video the attention it deserves and I am glad I did. No questions for you Sir (old school when addressing the teacher!) as I don't know enough to ask one but if you do more like this it will turn us all into Moto Vloggers. Clear explanations that take away the mystery for the the likes of me, and that may just give me the confidence to do a bit more than just making a video of the trip and tacking on some music. And the odd bit of blarney from you makes it fun to. Oh, just thought of a question. Do you think the remote mic would work if embedded into the helmet liner, maybe just forward of the right ear piece? 35deg+ in the French summer means the snood would have to be soaking wet!
Great to see you back Arthur! Your sense of humour is the same as mine man🤣👍. Yes it works, I’ve done it on my open face helmet and tucked it in the side, it actually sounds a bit better than what I do if I’m honest because it picks up a bit more of the engine noise. Hope all is good bud!
To synchronise sound and image I don't clap my hands (very difficult when riding), I use the bike's horn. And I place my mic in my jack's backpocket, near the exhaust, out of the wind. Another thing: I understand colorgrading gives great results. Except when you are very higly colorblind like I am. Therefore I must rely on camera settings...
Quick comment on your intro saying what your profession is - I think it should be a standard intro to every video - as it defines your experience and builds instant trust with your audience. It’s not viewed as bragging at all - just a helpful fact. Consider how many camera reviews that are out there done by people with little to no experience.
Interesting video, however I'm surprised with the choice of the camera. DJI Action 3 have well known issue with focusing, the image is rather washed out and nowhere near the quality of GoPro footage. I considered this camera but watching quite a few RUclips reviews, I'm leaning towards the GoPro 11. Has this been fixed? Why have you decided to choose this camera over GoPro 10 or 11, am I missing something? I still haven't upgraded my GoPro 7 so any input would be greatly appreciated.
I won’t list all my issues again in this post but you need to watch this previous video. ruclips.net/video/HVnjj0E5R8I/видео.html This explains a lot of why I have switched.
I think the focus issues will not be apparent on motovlogs since, as far as I understand, the issue is with close focussing. The GoPro image quality is slightly better, but I don't think that cancels out all other considerations.
@@bikegeist Thanks for the input. I like quite a few features of this camera better than the GoPro and been thinking about for a while, it may be best to to just take a plunge and order it, see how it actually performs in real life scenario.
@@motorcycleadventureslife Yeah, I'm probably going to go for the DJI eventually. I have terrible luck and will definitely have issues with any GoPro I buy. 😆
FYI, I had a bad result with an ND8 recording at 4k 30fps with a shutter speed of 1/60. Rocksteady was on but the result was anything but stable: ruclips.net/video/02_NtfAs-Eo/видео.html. Here is a comparison clip without the ND8 and with auto exposure and Rocksteady: ruclips.net/video/cKQsyd1w-kA/видео.html. On-line research suggests that the 1/60 may be too slow for Rocksteady to do its magic while your 50fps and 1/100 may be fast enough. My camera is mounted on my handlebar - your chin may vibrate less. 😊
Great film which explains matters for people like me with no technical knowledge to understand.
Ultra reliable, adjustable, great battery life and storage capacity
very welcome series!
Brilliant - super helpful - cheers Dave!
Very Kind Mark and thanks for your sub.🙏 Yes, you did very well to stay away from GoPro.🤯
Hi not sure if you remember I was picking your brain re settings on the action 4 recently
Just wanted to say I went on a classic bike shoot this weekend using your advice and it’s hands down the best onboard footage and sound I have ever created
Thank you so much
Cheers Mike
Ah good man Mike. You’re one of only a few who gets back and lets me know how they got on so it’s much appreciated. Cheers
Brilliant video Dave, hope you produce more in this series explaining the video and camera tech side.
Just ordered a dji mic, havent got a clue how they work yet but my 360 vids are dull without sound... so I'm hear learning little by little... Thanks dude, been watching a few of your vids, always enjoyable.
Cheers Steve. They are great mics!!
Good man John. You have the best possible setup now. It’s fairly easy to learn but every time I go out I still try another setting 🤣🤪
Very welcome bud. 👌🎥
Thank you. excellent video
Fantastic video I’ve just got an Action 3 really helpful just need to save up for a DJI mic
Love the content thanks Dave. So much to learn. Great to hear how you manage it all
Osmo Action 3 is a popular choice now for a motorcycle camera and now I see why.. good choice
Thank You! Loads of great information, keep them coming...
Brilliant vid Dave and an excellent idea, most of us know jack about the cameras! Just turn em on and press record! Looking forward to more enlightenment from the Master!
Cheers Tim, I’ve been toying with it for some time so hopefully people will benefit. 👍🎥🏍
Thanks for all that specialist info Dave. Lots of gems.
I've started using a usb c to usb c cable to plug the dji receiver into the A3 itself because i started having audio issues with it plugged directly into the camera. It works perfectly. But I did need to buy a cage for the A3 so I can use the cold shoe to place the receiver on.
Yes I bought a lead just for backup to do that. Works great. 👌
Amazing video arriving in my feed at exactly the right time. Thanks Dave!
thanks for the work done here ... the snood with the mic!!! what a tip! going totry it out next time I'm out👍
I like how clear your voice sounds and pair with the second transmiter for the engine sound. I have a DJI Mic and have been playing around with the settings. What settings do you use when using both transmitters? gains for receiver and transmiters? low cut enable? Thank you!
Great video and content. Learning a lot.
dear, well sharing!
excellent. looking forward to the rest of the series, and since you just touched upon the questions, i imagine this series will keep you busy for awhile.
Have you tried now? supposedly they already fixed this in the update, Im trying to decide if I go for the rode lav II or a cheap MOVO or Panda mic
Thanks Dave for putting this on😊you are the go to man for this you’re exactly what we need 😊😊😊😊
Appreciate you’re experience and knowledge

Great value Dave! I am usually a silent but regular viewer. It was the Insta360 One X2 video, that hooked me up with your channel and I am excited for this new series. Thanks, from Sydney, Australia.
Thanks for the kind words Touseef. 👍🎥

Oops normally I do. I’d obviously missed this one. 🤫
@@WheelieGoodTV Thanks very much
Nice! I've long wanted to see how the combo of Action 3 and DJI mic would be like.
hi great video. thanks for all videos you upload explaining all stuff. one question, when i say start recording on osmo mic, camera normally start recording and in that moment on osmo action 3 display i have pop message "4k60 recording.voice control disable" and i cant stop recording via voice command. But, when i put framerate to 50 everything work properly. Thank you in advance.
Brilliant Dave👍 Really good advice and insight into what can be achieved with the benifit of a little bit of your wisdom. Many thanks👍
Hiya Dave, great all round video. Is it possible to turn the microphone off whilst riding and recording video footage ?
if so, is it then possible to add voice over commentary when editing ? Many thanks in advance.
Thanks Shaun. Yes to both! It’s all very user friendly. 👍
Hi Bunty, good to be in touch. The last I heard, Harvey Norman were doing a good deal for the Osmo with the adventure kit. Hope that helps. 👍🎥
Amazing channel… Keep it up! Quick question about using 2 mics (engine and helmet) what are the preferred settings regarding stereo or mono?
Thanks Trev! Buy one before we meet up then I can set it up correctly for you. 👍🎥🏍
I just noticed that Dji do a single mic version of the wireless kit 120 euro or so cheaper if you don’t need 2 microphones.
Yes but it doesn’t come with the charging cradle which is a game changer for me.
Thanks for the note. Yes the charging cradle is very handy. Will see how my wired mic works out and if I get into the whole RUclips thing then might buy the twin pack or a new helmet or a day nav or new jacket or new boots.. the never ending spend in my motorbike hobby.

Ah good man John! I have a few vids up there now with all the settings. Obvs depends on what you want to do. Basic settings I use are 16:9 50fps, natural colour, iso 100-800 and shutter speed of 100.

Excellent video, looking to seeing more in the series!
Great stuff and much appreciated! When you are using the ND4 with the frame rate locked, what do you do about the EV and ISO settings?
I leave the EV at 0 and set the ISO to the range 100-1600. Never go above 1600 as the picture turns real grainy.
@@WheelieGoodTV Wonderful. I forgot to ask about White Balance. Auto?
Hi Dave,
Great video!
Did you mention any issues using ND-Filter with Rocksteady on?
I don’t believe I mentioned it but I’ve had no issues.
Thanks for that great vid Dave so if you have have the mic receiver in it’s sync to the vid from the camera? You can tell I am tec stupid 😀
Cheers Dave

What did you use to record this video, the image quality is fantastic
Depending on which helmet I use, that sweet spot differs. It just takes a bit of experimenting.
@@WheelieGoodTV thanks for the reply Dave, really appreciate it. I hope you don’t mind, but I put a link to your channel on one of my video descriptions.
Can an adapter USB-C be used and the DJI Mic module be attached with velcro to the side of the helmet?
Yes, I’ve done that as a backup and it works perfectly.
Hi Dave, can you record group audio using the Osmo, I am currently having a rediculous amount of issues using the Gopro.
Hi, what do you mean by ‘group’ audio?
Hey matey, question... You're comparing the picture quality between the x3 and the dji... Aren't they totally different cameras, one being a 360? Excuse me if I come across as ignorant. Thanks. ☺
It’s not really a comparison as you say they are totally different cameras. It’s more an explanation leading on to what the bit rate is since I’m constantly asked why a 5.7K camera doesn’t look as good as 4K.
Can I use my helmet's Sena Bluetooth microphone for the commentary into the DJI OSMO ACTION 3?
Hi, yes you can but you will need a splitter cable from Amazon. You will then need an audio adapter from DJI for the Action3 and they are like hens teeth. I’ve tried third party adapters and they just don’t work.
Hi mate I don’t want a GoPro as they over heat n cut off. Been looking at dji action cam adventure pack. Would you recommend it for bike films? I ride a Cb500x 2022 red passed my test feb 13th
Matthew I can’t recommend the DJI highly enough. It’s brilliant! I also have lots of films about this setup on my RUclips channel.
Absolutely Paul. I use a very thin rubber band and it sits right underneath the lens ring so it doesn’t obstruct that little sensor.
Absolutely Paul. I use a very thin rubber band and it sits right underneath the lens ring so it doesn’t obstruct that little sensor.

Keep up the good work 👍👍👍
All the best Marc
If you use the DJI mic with the camera it supports it Marc. The receiver has a USB C port which can take external power as it’s plugged into the camera. This should also be the case with the standard mic adapter when DJI release it. Obviously I haven’t been able to try this but on the Insta 360 cameras with mic adapters this works all the time. It was the only way I was able to keep the GoPro powered for any longer than half an hour. 👍🎥🏍
@@WheelieGoodTV Cheers Dave
I will look into that and start saving if they bring out an adaptor as was available for the Old DJI Action I would pull the plug now
All the best Marc
Well I’ve had enough of GoPro ruining my vlogging with corrupted files and having to disassemble the
camera and mount every time you want to change the battery and it freezing . So, I have ordered the action 3 and awaiting its delivery . Then I read all of the focus horror stories 😢any comment to make on that with your A3. Cheers
Thanks man. No focusing issues with mine. It seems to have been isolated to a batch released last year. The setup is amazing! Enjoy.
@@WheelieGoodTV Thanks ...a little bit of reassurance 👍🤞
Well i am currently attempting to record all the riders that are on coms using my gopro which ive linked to my packtalk bold so i was wondering if this was possible with the Osmo
Ah now I see. Yes that’s definitely possible with the same lead you would use for a GoPro converted to USB C.
Maybe you can help: when I record using 2 mics in stereo I still only get 1 audio channel in my editing program. As such I can’t seem to separate and individually adjust mix volume. What am I doing wrong 😅
Hi, I sent you a message about this. 👍🏍
@@WheelieGoodTV thank you Dave much appreciated ND4 it is! 😊👍🏻
Rory
Hi, how to safely mount that camera on the helmet ? I dont really trust that magnetic mounting system.
Hi Phil. It’s not just a magnet, it also clips in. The magnet only guides it into place before it clips in. It’s brilliant!

What gain level on the osmo 3camera do you use? And gain levels on the Dji mic plus I have heard you can’t use rocksteady with ND filters ??

@@WheelieGoodTV and what's the gain on the camera?
@@SwitzeroRider -10.
@@SwitzeroRider nice idea.👍👊🏻🏍👌
Interesting! No, no shutdowns at all. Faultless actually.
@@WheelieGoodTV thanks. I’ve only used it in bright conditions so far…so bright I’ve been using a 4 or 5 stop ND to maintain 100+ asa
@@bambalam9170 try without the ND. Many people report the same problem whilst using an ND. At least you can start isolating where the problem is coming from.
@WheelieGoodTV I turned off the image stabilisation and that took care of it.👍😎
I have an insta 360 X3.
Super great content as usual ! you answer most of the questions I had on this combo 😊 i think i'm as geeky or nerd and biker as you are
A last question on the dji mic receiver : could you connect an external mic to it ? I already have a mic in the helmet and was considering to connect it to the receiver. Is it an option? Or do you need a third party adapter? Ride safe and take care ✌️
Hi Hugo? Yes you can do this but as you say an adapter is needed. DJI still don’t sell them on their website so a 3rd party one on Amazon will suffice.
@Wheelie Good TV thanks a lot Dave 👍
One more question on the dji mic.
So you ditched the Insta360 One RS in favour of the DJI Osmo Action 3?
Sure did. The RS is still a very good camera but the 8 second startup was missing so many shots for me.
@@WheelieGoodTV Yes it works! I have a Sennheiser XS lav mic plugged in directly. Nae bother!
I am so
Annoyed with my setting in the osmo 3
It’s blurry and when I shoot in dark it’s horrible. Pleas guide
I would need to know your settings in order to help. Start by removing your ND filter if you’re using one and set the camera into auto.
@@WheelieGoodTV ok will tell u soon. No I don’t use nd filters
Good point and thanks for your input but a lot of people I’m afraid would think ‘ah here he goes again’🥴
I won’t list all my issues again in this post but you need to watch this previous video. ruclips.net/video/HVnjj0E5R8I/видео.html
This explains a lot of why I have switched.
@@WheelieGoodTV Thanks
Thank you for this. I think you've just saved me from buying ND filters as I'd need to turn rocksteady off 😊
