These mics look like the ideal solution for when it's raining. I currently have a pair of Actions 4's and the DJI mics, which I am very happy with, as I have one in my helmet and my wife will have one in hers. As long as she stays within 250m of me when we ride, they will be the perfect solution to being able to be able to capture our conversations. I was thinking that if it's wet, we'll just have to use the onboard sound recording within the mics and sync it in post, but the Mic 2 may be the answer. Yet more money DJI will get from me 😂. Aiii, the 25 seconds delay is a complete no-go for me. The old Osmo Action with a lavalier mice in the helmet records immediately. Its far from perfect, but sound delay is just a showstopper. Thanks a lot for this review!
Great video, thanks Dave. I'm really looking forward to trying this setup, DJI Mic 2 isn't available on it's own yet, but the leaks suggest it is coming soon 😃 The leaks also suggest a similar setup to the current mic, 2 mics & a receiver. Obviously with bluetooth the separate receiver not needed so much now, but it'll be interesting to see if you can capture audio from 2 mics into 2 channels, left & right like the current DJI Mic. That would allow you to have the 2nd mic setup to capture raw sound of the bike without the wind noise, exciting 👌🏻

I must check that. I think you’re possibly referring to where I join two sound clips in an edit, they pop unless I smooth them out which is a time consuming process. The mic is fine though.

As an Action 4 owner, I'm quite excited by this. We use the Rode Wireless Go2 to get our joint audio from two bikes onto one camera. It will be interesting if we can record two DJI microphones directly onto the Action 4. I also wonder what the range is like on the DJI transmitter compared to the Rode?
You can definitely record two mics but the range is a bit shit. Not any further than 100ft really and has to be line of sight. I’ve only done tests stationary and not moving on a bike so this could reduce it even more.
Morning Dave, thanks so much for putting this together. I am having so many problems with my Action 3 at the moment, it is driving me bonkers. Video being recorded, but no audio…..Recording first 9 minute segment fine, but then not recording anything on the next segment ! I use the voice control, telling it to start and stop. It will start recording when I say “start recording”, but sometimes it won’t stop when I say “stop recording”. It is almost as though it doesn’t think it is recording, even the red light is flashing indicating it is. This is when there is no recording on the file segment. Aaarrgghh ! I am losing confidence in it 😢 So few people have had issues, and I definitely can’t find anyone on RUclips who has experienced the same as me. This set up you have now looks amazing, but I am not confident enough to go and buy another DJI 😢
@@WheelieGoodTVmorning Dave, just returning following your advice. Since you saying about turning off the voice prompt, I haven’t had any more issues, though I did replace the sd card at the same time. Something else I have now done, as I no longer use the voice prompt, I was finding the recording button hard to use, especially in gloves, so I stuck a self adhesive button on the camera, which has raised it by about 3mm. If you watch my later vids, scroll to where the camera is facing me, you can see what I mean. Cheers
Hi from frosty cold Glasgow Dave , Great insight into this exciting ( if slow ) mic progress DJI are bringing us . Im still on my OA3 and without any audio sollution since i got it a year ago. ( OA1 cynova and a plus in mic was a lot easier ) I didnt spend on the wireless mic to date so im holding off ( still ) on everything . Guaranteed the second i were to buy the original mic this 2nd edition will be a standalone the day after 😅 keep us updated mate . Slainte!
I encountered the same problem, too, when using the snapshot button to power on the camera to start recording. It takes too long for the mic to connect. Hopefully DJI can solve this problem asap. I don't have a problem with Boya By-V20 but the sound it picks up is not as good as DJI Mic 2
@@WheelieGoodTV Has there been the necessary update yet? Rapid automatic connection of the mic when pressing record on the OA4 is a must for me to buy the set. Thanks for your vid!
Fab video as always Dave. I knew you`d get the Action 4, it was only a matter of time as you already had the Mic 2. Unfortunately it`s still not available as a stand alone purchase. I hope it is by the time I get to Co Galway at the end of June for a week ! 😃😃
Dave, Great video! I just started a motovlog myself (Touring & Commuting the R1200RT) I was looking for an explanation of the best Gain setting (for Action 3 with usb-C wired lavalier) but couldn't find an explanation anywhere... I decided to just ask you straight in a comment. I searched a vid to ask you. Read the title of this vid and thought this would be a vid that would be related to my question... turns out: it is exactly about my question... I wasn't expecting this, since the title nor the description contained the word 'gain' . Please do so, so that others will find this great content easier. :) Well explained Thanks a lot!
@@WheelieGoodTV May I ask a slightly related question... I'm using an USB-C lavalier mic in my helmet. I'd like to use a 2nd same mic and position it closer to the engine, to pick up the engine sound. Would it work to have a USB-C 2 into 1 adapter? Would that work?! I missing input from the engine sound.. wanted to see if this could be a affordable solution... Thanks
Great video, I've just bought your exact same system. Been a Gopro user for a long time, but the audio issues I had got to an unacceptable level. It's all the faffing about as well, with the Gopro......Goodbye Gopro Subbed you
I've seen threads where people say the mics over bluetooth directly to the action 4 pick up a lower quality of sound than it would with a receiver plugged in.
I'm assuming that, for now until the bluetooth connection delay can be resolved, that the on board recording would allow one to "catch up" the missing 25 seconds in post editing...Is that a potential solution? I'm also guessing you leave the dji TX mic powered on for the entire ride? Good video... Great job... Thanks from Ontario, Canada
Yes I leave the tx on for the entire ride as the battery lasts for ages. I suppose you could do that with the sound no problem, I hadn’t actually thought of that. 💡 👌🤪
I've updated the firmware to my dji mic2 transmitter and simply connecting just using the transmitter with the dji osmo 4 for my moto vlogging. I tried setting the mic to -6 gain and it was almost too quiet. i'm still going to tinker with the settings but, i love my setup
Still using the Action 3 with the original mics in the neat little box. I’m sure these are better but I’ll stick with my elastic band🤣 PS. -12 is perfect and there does seem more detail.
Hi Dave, i have the same setup and found the meter also hitting the higher limits. But still experimenting. Have you tried the voice commands, if you can get that working its great but a bit hit or miss so far but really extends the battery. Your always an enjoyble watch.
Wow great vid would love that setup but the boss would kill me 😀I’ll stick with the action 3 and DJI mic with the receiver and the elastic band 😀keep up the great vids Dave what is the link for your patron page pls 👍
Hi, I always find your videos very informative. I have a DJI Osmo action 3 camera, I got it when they first come out and I believe it needs a software update to get the best out of it. 1. How do you do this, and is it necessary, perhaps you could make a video showing us how to download the software and load it onto the camera, it would be very helpful. Thanks jeff ps there is a new Mic 2 from DJI, it may be what you're looking for to connect to your action 4.
Great video! Can you tell me if after 15 minutes of non use I have to turn on Mic2 (on button), turn on Osmo Action 4 and reconnect manually going to the OA4 setup > wireless.... That's right?
@@WheelieGoodTV Thanks. One more question. Does mic 2 turn off after minutes of non use? I ask because I would like to know if I will have to turn on OA4 and also the mic 2 that will be inside the helmet, if the mic has to be turn on to the button, this will be a huge obstacle.
Hopefully the mic2 isn't locked to only work with DJI products after the Osmo Pocket 3 and they will release firmware with support for the action 3 and other products... I'm presuming the Mic2 does everything on its own and is just using the paired device as a storage and controller...
It won’t work with the Action 3 without the receiver because the 3 doesn’t have a built in receiver. However, I’d say this tech will be standard in all of their future cams.
@@AidanPed yeah I spoke with DJI support and there's no hardware within the Action 4 so it's purely firmware... I'd say a update will be out to let you use them.
Great video. I have the action 3 and looking at getting the action 4 and mic combo. Has the Bluetooth issue been sorted yet? Seems excessive compared to other Bluetooth connections.
Have you tried aligning the mike parallel to your mouth, on the outside of your gaiter/neck warmer. Have thought about purchasing Action 4, just because....but being that $$$$ is tight & have no issues w/Action 1 & 3, figuring that I can hold off!-lol....A-L-O-H-A from Hawaii
Hi Dave, very educational as always. Probably a silly question, but uf the mic 2 can link to action 4 using bluetooth, why not a cardo/senna i'com? Different bluetooth frequency? As I got an action 3 from Santa, I guess I will just buy the earlier mic.😢 Glad to see DJI getting in contact with you, hopefully they could stretch ti some sponsorship for their Numero uno reviewer. Cheers Arthur
Hi Arthur, hope yer well! Yes nice to see DJI are monitoring feedback about their new system. It really is a game changer with just a few small details needed to make it superb! Good question about the intercom compatibility. I must explore further.🤔🧐👌
I Got the GoPro 12 just because of Bluetooth so I can connect it directly to my helmet comms. Since I'm using the Shuberth C5, which already has everything embedded, there are no wires, no need to weird setups. I just have 2 issues: 1) Bluetooth connection takes time so no insta capture like you mentioned. 2) Haven't figured a way to have 2 active connections meaning I either connect to my passenger helmet or the GoPro (still checking on this). I barely done any sound quality testing so I can't really say much about that either apart from that it works. Also, the GoPro still saves both tracks (Camera mic + bluetooth track) Thanks for the info, always cool to check how others are doing it
Great video about a subject that has us tearing our hair out most of the time 😂 We really struggle on our channel with audio quality using the Osmo action 4 and we’ve tried so many different options and configurations to try and solve the problem. I wonder if you’d mind me asking a question or two. As we’re off travelling again on the bikes in a couple of days in a last bid attempt to up the quality of our sound I’ve ordered this wireless mic. Because I record audio from both of us through the intercom I have a lav mic next to the speaker in the helmet to record our conversations. Would I be right in assuming that the wireless mic won’t draw any (or very little) power if it only comes on when you press the recording button on the camera? I’m hoping that it will last a full day on our travels if it only draws power when we activate the camera Sorry for such a long comment, but thanks again for a great video
I’m worried you may have misunderstood a little bit. When the camera is powered up it doesn’t power up the mic, the mic has to stay powered up permanently. However, the good news is that the battery in the transmitter will last approximately 4 hrs before needing a quick charge. One annoying thing though is that in the latest firmware upgrade, if the transmitter doesn’t detect a receiver ie in this case it is the camera since the receiver is built into the camera then the transmitter powers down after 15 minutes which is ridiculous. I have addressed this with DJI and explained why this just doesn’t work for motorcyclists. As a result of this I now use a DJI wired lav mic through the DJI audio adapter and bought the GPS remote to trigger the camera. At least there’s one less battery to worry about charging now on a tour. Enjoy your travels and I hope the system works out for you. 🙏
Thanks so much for the reply, it’s wonderful to have an expert in the field to provide new ideas particularly with the incredibly tricky audio issues around motovloging. I bought the DJI audio adapter in the hope that it would alleviate the dreadful clipping that occurs with this camera and a lav mic in a helmet but the result was dreadful. The audio was unusable. It’s interesting that a lav mic and the adapter works for you without clipping, I might try it again perhaps with the new DJI lav mic. Thanks also for the information about the mic lasting four hours before needing a quick charge. Unfortunately, that won’t work for us so I’ll definitely be returning the wireless system and attempting yet another lav mic set up 😂 I’m actually delighted to be able to provide you with a bit of information in return for your wonderfully detailed reply. The auto shut off feature in the latest firmware upgrade can be switched off. (According to DJI support). Apparently the Osmo action 4 menu needs updating so you can’t do it from the action 4 menu but it can be done via the pocket three menu. You can disable the auto shutdown feature so that mic should stay on. Hope that helps and thanks again for such a detailed reply.
I agree. It’s tricky enough finding that sweet spot and I’ve also noticed that it is different with every helmet I wear.🤯 But when it works, it’s superb.
Thanks Ian. I’ve had four hours no probs. With the cradle now you can pop it in for a quick charge whilst having a coffee and get the whole day out of the system. It’s V impressive. 👌🎥
Thank you sir. Some excellent content. Might I ask if you have been able to offload the 32bit file from the mic to your phone then send to Dropbox for example? I’m soon on a 2 week trip without a computer.
Battery life is approx 4hrs but hopefully with the release of the standalone product today, you will be able to quick charge in the cradle. Not sure about auto power off yet. Need to do more tests.
Great info - can I ask what is the helmet mount . As a newbie - beyond the Action4 plus Dji mic2 and the helmet mount- any other must have accessories such as handlebar mounts - or is it better to get the motoring bundle ? Tia
Hi, helmet mount is from Amazon. I use different clamps for different bikes and have a bag full which I’ve collected over the years. One very useful clamp is a ram mount which I use for my reverse angle of me and it’s also useful for the 360 cam mounted on the bike frame.
Hi Dave, do you know if the original DJI Mic set (with plug in transmitter) will work without the plug in transmitter on the Action 4, or do you need also the new Dji mic. Many Thanks Dennis x
On the DJI Mic, how do you identify the transmitters once they're out of the box with different gain settings? other than mic checking the signals on the receiver.
Hi Dave, Thanks for the video, this was exactly the information that I was searching for. I also have the Action 3 and the Pocket 3, and I was wondering if you could connect the Mic2 to the Action 4. I yesterday connected DJI directly, but they told me that it isn't possible.... I have the DJI Mic (1) now connected to the Action 3, but have it mounted directly in the helmet. If you want to know how, I'm happy to share it by e-mail to you (pictures). I only see that I have a lot more wind noice....

Hi mate, i`m hiking over here in Scotland with the bluetooth connection to my Osmo action4 and im finding the same problem When i start recording it sometimes takes ages for the mic to connect to the camera which is a pain in the butt sometimes it connects right away sometimes after 10secs sometimes over 20secs, very unreliable...might have to do what your doing and keep the camera on.
Yes I’m surprised they still haven’t released a firmware update. DJI did respond to the issue on my channel but have since gone quiet again which makes me think they can’t find the answer to the issue just yet. I’ve had to stop using this configuration as a result because it’s not practical.
Hey, hey mate ...is any way to get the sound wireless and connect this mic with a Sena system (so we can have the soundand conversation when we travel with other riders or passengers ???) Its a big deal for a lot of riders i believe. Thanks if you do have any suggestions!!!!(and even if you dont😂)
Great question but one I haven’t experimented with yet. Bruce @teapotone is the master when it comes to this. Watch his recent vids around Scotland, the sound is amazing from the comms and his helmet cam.
I use the gps remote and the action 4. The remote can put the camera in sleep mode. Would the mic2 stay connected or would there still be the 25 sec delay in syncing that you observed for wake up?
Good question and unfortunately the answer is it still takes 25seconds. I also have the remote and this glitch in the system still makes it unusable for me.

Never heard of that Ian but I had the same issues on Insta360 cams using voice prompts. I stopped using that feature on all cams after that.
@@WheelieGoodTVhmm, I wonder if that is what the problem is on mine then. Another thing to try before pulling my hair out 😂 Thanks Dave
Cheers
Cracking vid. Same set up as me. Same settings. Love it. Really simple solution. Cheers sir 👍
Hi from frosty cold Glasgow Dave ,
Great insight into this exciting ( if slow ) mic progress DJI are bringing us .
Slainte!
It's released tomorrow mate. If you don't fancy the wireless option though, consider their new lav mic adapter which is £45 on their website.
Great review Dave👍
Thank you.
And thanks for watching. 👌🎥🙏
I encountered the same problem, too, when using the snapshot button to power on the camera to start recording. It takes too long for the mic to connect. Hopefully DJI can solve this problem asap. I don't have a problem with Boya By-V20 but the sound it picks up is not as good as DJI Mic 2
Hopefully DJI will release an update soon as this will stop a lot of people buying the system.
Tomorrow Martin. 🤗
Yes I`ve just seen it, I`ll be ordering one 😄😄
Thank you for the video
You're welcome
Very nice equipment. On my shopping list.
Well explained Thanks a lot!
This is really helpful feedback and duly noted. I’ve just changed the title of this video. Much appreciated 🙏🎥
It's all the faffing about as well, with the Gopro......Goodbye Gopro
Subbed you
Thanks for the sub. I’ll never go back to GoPro. 😍
I've seen threads where people say the mics over bluetooth directly to the action 4 pick up a lower quality of sound than it would with a receiver plugged in.
Mmm I haven’t noticed that in fairness. Maybe it’s been rectified with a firmware update. 🤔
Good to know because I would honestly love have some better less wind struck audio for my clips @@WheelieGoodTV
Great video. I didn’t know you were a TV cameraman. Have you ever worked for the BBC on OB’s. ?
@@RustyRecovery cheers, yeah I was with the BBC for 16 years. Not OB’s mainly documentary stuff. Sounds like you might have experience there too?
@@WheelieGoodTV not me personally. My Dad, Phil smith was an OB rigging manager at the BBC for over 25 years.
Still using the Action 3 with the original mics in the neat little box. I’m sure these are better but I’ll stick with my elastic band🤣
PS. -12 is perfect and there does seem more detail.
Nice informative video. Interested to know about the hi-viz vest ? Just straight from the building site ??
Nice work Dave - The Osmo 4 keeps on delivering, why does anyone still use a GoPro??
🤣👌
You know it makes sense Rodney!🤯🎥
Hi Dave, i have the same setup and found the meter also hitting the higher limits. But still experimenting. Have you tried the voice commands, if you can get that working its great but a bit hit or miss so far but really extends the battery. Your always an enjoyble watch.
Cheers bud, yes the voice commands are like you say hit and miss. Mind you it’s probably my weird accent.🤔🤣
@@WheelieGoodTV I am a Scottish Fifer. So the same does apply to me, I am not going to start talking posh for no one 😜
Wow great vid would love that setup but the boss would kill me 😀I’ll stick with the action 3 and DJI mic with the receiver and the elastic band 😀keep up the great vids Dave what is the link for your patron page pls 👍
And that setup you have is superb! Patreon is www.patreon.com/wheeliegoodtv
Cheers mate.🙏
Yes you have to turn them back on after 15mins but they reconnect automatically.
I can’t say for sure as I have to do more tests and I’m away at the moment. It’s also something I’d like to know so I will find out soon
@@WheelieGoodTV thanks
Reason I’m switching to the 4 too!
Omg this is the solution no more worries if it rains, couldn’t you buy the dji mic the standalone one ?
Released tomorrow.
The Mic 2 pairs with my iPhone 15 Pro Max through Bluetooth.
Yes the latest firmware update sorted it out. 👌
Thanks for another GREAT video. Can you tell me / give me a link to the helmet bracket that you use.
Amazon for a tenner. Just type in ‘action camera helmet mount’.
It also looks like the mic will connect to the insta 360 ace pro which i have but am tempted by the creator kit
DJI release the standalone mic tomorrow.
I Got the GoPro 12 just because of Bluetooth so I can connect it directly to my helmet comms. Since I'm using the Shuberth C5, which already has everything embedded, there are no wires, no need to weird setups. I just have 2 issues:
1) Bluetooth connection takes time so no insta capture like you mentioned.
2) Haven't figured a way to have 2 active connections meaning I either connect to my passenger helmet or the GoPro (still checking on this).
I barely done any sound quality testing so I can't really say much about that either apart from that it works. Also, the GoPro still saves both tracks (Camera mic + bluetooth track)
Thanks for the info, always cool to check how others are doing it
also its float 32 for the mic 2 it should be fixable I thought?
Great video about a subject that has us tearing our hair out most of the time 😂
We really struggle on our channel with audio quality using the Osmo action 4 and we’ve tried so many different options and configurations to try and solve the problem.
I’m hoping that it will last a full day on our travels if it only draws power when we activate the camera
Sorry for such a long comment, but thanks again for a great video
Unfortunately, that won’t work for us so I’ll definitely be returning the wireless system and attempting yet another lav mic set up 😂
I’m actually delighted to be able to provide you with a bit of information in return for your wonderfully detailed reply.
I’m building a new helmet setup and I’ve avoided wireless like the plague because they always seem to have gain that is too hot
I agree. It’s tricky enough finding that sweet spot and I’ve also noticed that it is different with every helmet I wear.🤯 But when it works, it’s superb.
Great video Dave. What's the battery life of the mic like?
Sorry I’m away on a filming assignment so won’t manage that. 👌🎥
Thanks! Today DJI present Mic2)
Did you notice, how hard bluetooth connection discharge the camera?
No I didn’t, I haven’t ridden for a full day yet using this kit due to the crap weather here in Ireland. I’ll look out for that though…🤔
Recieved my dji mic 2. Still weather in Russia is not comfortable for test. Do you have any updates about battery life of camera?
Cool. What’s the battery life like on the little mic? Does it go into sleep mode when the camera is off? Power up with the camera?
Many Thanks
Dennis x
Hi Dennis, unfortunately it doesn't work I'm afraid. It will still work by plugging the receiver in to the side of the camera though (the old way).
On the DJI Mic, how do you identify the transmitters once they're out of the box with different gain settings? other than mic checking the signals on the receiver.
I put a sticker on the back of each tx.
Hi Paul, yes I'd love to see your setup. It's always nice to see what fellow 'techies' are up to. Please email to wheeliegoodvideos@gmail.com. Ta!🎥

Hi mate, i`m hiking over here in Scotland with the bluetooth connection to my Osmo action4 and im finding the same problem
When i start recording it sometimes takes ages for the mic to connect to the camera which is a pain in the butt
sometimes it connects right away sometimes after 10secs sometimes over 20secs, very unreliable...might have to do what your doing and keep the camera on.
Yes I’m surprised they still haven’t released a firmware update.
DJI did respond to the issue on my channel but have since gone quiet again which makes me think they can’t find the answer to the issue just yet. I’ve had to stop using this configuration as a result because it’s not practical.
Can u please clarify
"If we restart the camera, will it reconnect to the Bluetooth mic?"
Yes it does. And it does it even quicker if you update the mic software.
Please suggest best setting also
Should i on low cut
And auto sync video ??
Hey, hey mate ...is any way to get the sound wireless and connect this mic with a Sena system (so we can have the soundand conversation when we travel with other riders or passengers ???)
Its a big deal for a lot of riders i believe.
Thanks if you do have any suggestions!!!!(and even if you dont😂)
Great question but one I haven’t experimented with yet. Bruce @teapotone is the master when it comes to this. Watch his recent vids around Scotland, the sound is amazing from the comms and his helmet cam.
@WheelieGoodTV I will do man, thanks alot for the response!
How are you changing the mic gain on the action 4? I don’t see the option to adjust gain when connected to the mic 2
On the camera screen swipe left from the right hand side. You will get the Pro settings page, press the little studio mic 🎙️ symbol and it’s in there.
@@WheelieGoodTV Thank you!
@@CollinOtten no probs. I should have mentioned this only works when the mic is connected.
I use the gps remote and the action 4. The remote can put the camera in sleep mode. Would the mic2 stay connected or would there still be the 25 sec delay in syncing that you observed for wake up?
Good question and unfortunately the answer is it still takes 25seconds. I also have the remote and this glitch in the system still makes it unusable for me.
the latest action4 v01.03.08.20 firmware on Jan 10 seems fixed the pop audio thing. do you upgrade the latest firmware?
Yes I’ve upgraded but still a lot of popping. 🤯
Is their a reason why i cannot access the gain settings for the mic 2 on the action 4 . Through Pro and then clicking on the mic symbol?

Doesn't switching it to 32 bit audio on the action 4 eliminate the clipping? pretty sure it does but its not on by default
Ok so you mentioned it at the end, still, I don't think its on by default
Yeah it’s not on by default but when you select it, it stays on….unless you do a firmware update and then it resets everything again back to factory.
Thank you for the video
