But what is the actual microphone you use? That seems to be a Motorcycle RUclipsr trade secret because no one seems to talk about that component of the setup.
@@GR1MKA1 meanwhile I switched my setup to an Osmo Action 3 and also did extensive testing to find the right microphone for my motovlog setup. I also have a video about it on my channel, but it's in German. I found two solutions that worked very well with the Osmo Action 3: 1. Samsung EO-IC100 Headset - this is actually a full headset with in ear speakers, but I simply cut them off and only kept the microphone in the little control unit. This is a very light wight solution. Directly with a USB-C plug into the camera, and the audio results are quite fine without any clipping for me. Especially considering the low price of it. 2. WKWZY DX-M02 USB-C adapter that you can youse with 3.5mm TRS microphones. It's more expensive, but I can use the lavalier microphones I already head. As the adapter supports stereo, I can even use it with my dual vlog setup. And I also have no problems with clipping and can use the gain control in the Osmo Action 3.
Because most of them don't know anything and are too lazy to do real work so they just shill for whichever product they get the biggest commission/CTR on. This problem is most pervasive with the VPN industry.
I had a GoPro 7 for a weekend. We had a great balloon fest that weekend. It overheated on low video settings. You had to pull the battery to reset it & it actually fried the sd card. Monday I sent it back.
YES! The only person on YT that actually praises the product because it simply works! Like, seriously, so many people are focusing on super high resolutions, 10 bit bazingas and other things when the fundaments, that are reliability, are lying down flat. Kudos to You Dork man for being real with it. If all of the buyers would be like that, the companies would actually focus on delivering a fully capable and working product! I personally bought DJI action 3 and I love it. Very reliable but never had to test the external mics, so it's not an issue for me for now. Maybe the gain thing is something they can add in the future updates? Anyhow the camera doesn't freeze or corrupt like gopros infamously did in the past - 11 does not but it costs a little bit horrendous amount of money for what u are getting.
I use a Sony FDR-X3000 on my helmet, side mounted, with a 128GB SD card, external Panda mic and a 10,000mAH external battery pack attached. Turn it on to record at the start of a ride, turn it off at the end of the day. 11hr record time at 1080p 60fps and 7.5 hour battery life on the external batt plus 2 hours on camera battery. In 10 years of using Sony cameras, HDR AS15 then the FDR-X3000, I have never lost a single file or had a camera crash. They just work. The external mike does suffer from gain issues but as I just use it to record the bike sound it is not a biggy for me. Also water proof as is and even handles rain with the rear door open for the mike and external power. Cannot understand why people keep buying Gopro when there are far better cameras for motorcycles on the market.
This past year has been painful for me and my relationship with GoPro….god I hate those cameras when they fail. When they work….pure awesomeness. I’m now at the point however, after investing heavily into the GoPro eco-system, feeling like it’s time for a change. So good timing on your part with this video. Thanks!!
@@ithinkwemissedaturn2110 Funny, I decided to try insta360 the past few months. I went through two cameras, could not get them to work reliably, kept freezing despite me following all the best practices for formatting. Worse, the customer service was terrible. I've had good experience with the GoPro customer service. I really liked the Insta when it worked but for me that turned out to be only a day or two each time I tried to use it. I may give it another go.
I hear you. You've invested the time and money to have a acceptable mount system and developed your work flow. It's tough to trash all that and start over with a new camera. I'm sorta in the same place.
100% agree with you on the "not motorcycle friendly" camera ecosystems. I could take a few of them and make the near perfect motorcycle camera. My Hero 8 just pisses me off most of the time and I end up not even filming. Maybe I should start my own camera company...
I started with Chinese knock-offs, until I decided to get more serious. After researching all of Go-Pro's problems, I chose the Osmo Action 3. For my helmet set up, I use an inline atenuator cable that keeps the audio from blowing out. My external digital mini-boom mic has a manual gain control on it. It all seems to work great so far. Thanks for the video!
There's more than a few people asking about this "external digital mini-boom mic has a manual gain control" comment. Can you clarify @klrnomad on what it is?
I have the Action 3. With either the DJI Wireless Mic or a USB-C External Mic attached, the db level on the camera itself is adjustable to minus 12db. You only have access to this gain adjustment when the external mic is plugged in so you might easily have missed it or it might have been a recent firmware upgrade. With the wonderful gain control on the DJI Wireless Mic, I leave the gain on the camera at 0db and do all the needed gain adjustment for moto vlogging on the Wireless Mic.
Yup, was going to post the same. They added -12db gain adjustment in a relatively recent firmware update -- the same upgrade that introduced 10-bit colour depth. IMO this camera is nearly perfect.
@@oscr_zen yes, on both my AGV tourmodular and my Neotec 2, I have magnets mounted to the inside of the chin bar and slightly to the right of my mouth. The magnet on the wireless mic clicks onto this magnet and even with the dead cat attached, I can’t tell it’s there. I have a video on my channel about my setup that shows this at 4:55.
@@oscr_zen, there is also a 3.5mm jack for a wired lave mic on the transmitters. I don't have a lot of room for even the small transmitter without removing foam. So you could easily clip the pack into your jacket and run the mic up to your helmet without much issue. Apparently some reviews have shown buzzing with some mics. There are a few good comparison reviews on RUclips. I am opting for the Shure MVL but at $100CDN that is a pricey option, also on back order for many vendors. There are other cheaper options but make sure you test them before purchase or have a good return policy.
Is there a port on the Osmo 3 for an external mic or do you still have to use the 3rd party adapter which on the original Osmo Action only gives you Mono recording.
Cool step off! I call that one's "cat mode" But for me these days? The get offs and nasty terrain surprises are why I have ended my offroading at 70 years old....as a kid and then a young man riding with pals Sure it was fun as hell.... I even raced motocross for years and a little desert too but honestly the fun of riding so cal offroad wears thin and then just gets old....once the adventure and "challenge" part of it has lost its attraction? Yeah you all can keep it lol....I will now take paved twisty canyon roads any day of the week over struggling and cringing about deep sand bike eating rain ruts and ROCKS....not to mention the choking dust or the absolute DOWNER of getting flat tire in the middle of nowhere....It's way more fun in the beginning than down the road IMHO
I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this already, but the Action 3 has mic volume adjustment from -12 to +24. A firmware update came out in Nov or Dec 2022 that added this. Also, the external mic adapter is just a simple USB-c to TRS mini jack. Any of them will work, just don't try to use a TRRS jack. I really wanted to go with the Action 3 but ended up returning 5 of them. They all had the soft focus issue; some worse than others. I ended up going with the GoPro 11 for $10 more. $340 (veteran disc) vs $330. I also bought the Media Mod for $55. So now I can take out the GoPro battery and run the camera on a small power bank and use an external mic at the same time. It's the only action cam that'll do this as far as I know. Most of them will do either one, but not both at the same time. I sure can't complain about the picture quality and it's running flawlessly so far as long as I don't leave the mounting fingers folded in. It was a good choice for my needs. I looked at the Insta 360 as well. I guess I just had small worries about framing the shots, image stabilization and picture quality. Maybe if this review was out I woulda gone this way.
Yeah but good luck getting the DJI app MIMO to work on your device. Not supported on SO MANY devices, and if you can't get it to work, then you're shit out of luck and get locked out of the camera.
Gopro dont tell you this but you need to do a factory reset after every firmware update. You loose the resets but you can easily redo them. The other thing to do is to do a full format of the sdcard, on a laptop or pc. Not the quick format but the full format that takes about 45mins. The format on the gopro leaves behind data that may have a conflict withe new firmware. My gopro11 and 10 have stopped being glitchy now
One of the most honest review I have ever seen. Thank you. I started to get into making videos but the editing... I just don't have the time nor want to spend that time editing video.
This is excellent information. Rarely have I seen such a practical comparison. I'm glad I recently bought a Hero 11 because if I hadn't I'd be going down a research rabbit hole due to this video. I hate electronics related research rabbit holes. If I'm frustrated with the GoPro, I now have another legitimate option to consider. Thanks.
Bought a Gopro Hero 9 in Sept 2023 at bestbuy for 230.00. Strap it to powerbank on top of helmet and run it on loop all day. No heating issue because I don' insert the battery. Its great for dashcam use. Also I turned down the wind noise in post production. So far I like it.
Well, that was a breath of fresh air. I just started looking for a bike cam. And just stopped looking. I know what to buy now. Many thanks for taking the time to do this video.
Insta360 camera works flawless. But the low Bitrate sucks and I personally don’t see any need to have a 360 camera combo. Also I always have problems with the Insta app. So my money goes to DJI. If you use the right adapter and less sensitive mics, the sound is quite decent. And with the new update you even can set audio levels -12db. 😉 Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Your timing is impeccable! I was looking into picking up an additional camera and wondering which way to go. Excellent food for thought from your experiences. 👍
If you're a non-content creator...I recommend Akaso. My Akaso Brave 6 plus has worked just fine on a mirror mount for 2 years. I have an Akaso V50X (4K@30fps) on the way for my second bike....$75. Both use the same external mike and batteries. No need to spend hundreds of dollars if you're not a content creator. According to the title, the video is supposed to be about motorcycle action cameras...not necessarily content creation, but that's where he took it...up to him. Thanks for the video.
Glad to hear you recommend the Insta360. I just bought the One RS w/4K lens and the mic adapter for my helmet cam last week. I originally got the Insta360 X3 because I have a GoPro Hero 6 I was going to use for the helmet. But when I finally dug it out of storage (always hated it because the thing would lock up and not record.) the batteries barely held a charge. Instead of buying new batteries and an audio interface, I went One RS. I'm keeping both Insta360s. One on the helmet to vlog with (just starting that) and the other for interesting angles without having to constantly remount and change angles. Worst case is I have a back up if something happens to one of them.
Thank you for this video, it amazes me that with all technology available, we still struggle so much to find a tool to do motor blogging. I own the Hero 7 and haven’t upgraded because it still is the best solution, nothing else that has come out offers me that big of a difference.
I use the Action 3 with a $20 volume control and it works great. Before that I used the Garmin Virb XE and it worked great as well but the factory cable that's needed to use an external mic is really large and bulky. The newer cameras had better stab and video quality so I had to upgrade. I wish DJI would add GPS and software to go with it for the future action 4. The Garmin GPS and software are amazing.
I’m an Osmo Action user… Because it Just Works! I have 3 of them. Prior to that it was two Hero 3 Blacks (GoPro’s most reliable camera ever) … but the video quality just got unbearable. Might try the Insta360 some day… Great walkthrough sir!
I use an original Osmo Action on my helmet cam and have no gain issues. I'm using Movo ACM400 Flexible Gooseneck Omnidirectional Microphone for Motovlogging. Saw some other youtubers recommend it.
Even though i am not cut out for motorcycles - i am in the market for a 360 camera. I so enjoyed this video by *_Dork In The Road,_* i subscribed less than 60 seconds into the video. I find "Dork's" presentation to be personable, understandable, humble. Exactly what i'm looking for. Blessings and keep up the good work.
As a audio video nerd I agree 100% with literally everything you are saying. Literally just created a whole new motovlog setup (restarting the channel...again) and i had nothing but problems with my hero8. Our hero9 camera doesn't have a working rear screen (Not our fault) and we HATE them. I think you just sold me on upgrading. I have actually been filming via my phone now because it just works.
Nice video, I have all Osmo Action 3's myself, and I love mine. I am using the DJI mic set and recording my audio separately. That set does allow you to drop the gain both on the transmitter and on the receiver so I never had the gain issues you experienced since I never plugged a mic into the camera, but that's good to know about. I'm definitely interested in the Insta 360 cams and with your recommendation now I have to try one out!
Looks like the Action 3's latest update includes a negative dB gain for external mics, precisely what we'd need: ruclips.net/video/XXqjH1fbWAM/видео.html This is probably the camera I'm going to get, as the video quality appears better to me than the One RS, along with the same reliability (and cold performances). *Edit* Mmm.. seems like the gain still does not seem to be fixing the clipping issues, but mic volume control might? I guess I'll take Ben's advice and consider the One RS harder..
I"ve had literally every GoPro cam except one....I also got an Insta360 X3 the first day it came out....and I use it now all the time. So easy, faster and gets the best footage asI can decide after recording, what I want to see... I love my 360 and it's my go to now for speed and ease and coverage.
IT's a bit hard to say but...I had it on...and record, pause, record, pause etc etc...and doing that it was like...easily an hour to almost an hour n half...so not totally sure. I added a simple USB plug in and didn't worry about it. @@HDFXSB645
I've been using an akaso brave 6+. Is it the best camera out there? Probably not, but it has good image stabilization, an external mike can just plug into the usb C port and it records in hi def. Biggest down side is to use the external mike you can't use the waterproof case. You could modify the case, but you'll have to reseal the cable after battery/sd card changes. For about $100 it's good enough for me.
I own all of DJIs action cameras. Action 1 is my ‘forget’ camera, set it up for timelapses and in places I won’t mind if I accidentally forget it. Action 2 is for quick chin POV angles, but also mounting places that are hard to fit a larger camera. Action 3 is kind of everything else on or off the bike that needs a wide FOV. I also use the Sony FDRx3000 for my helmet talking bits, has a 3.5mm jack for any mic, sound is good with a dead cat. It also has lens stabilization so no digital cropping. Image quality is great
I've run GoPro for a few years, currently make all my content with a Gopro 9. I don't use the audio to vlog and do voice over after in post. So far it has worked without issue for a few years.
I've been making moto videos for 3 years and this is an absolute eye-opener. I've been doing everything with the GoPro 7 until now and I've wasted so much money trying to make it work with a microphone. I think it's time to go a differente route with the helm-cam and only use gopro as a 2nd camera.. Hitting the subscribe button has never been easier, thanks!
no offense, on the Action 3, the mic negative gain has been available since at least the last update from DECEMBER and is only available when you have a mic plugged in. Not sure if you never updated the firmware or just arent familiar with this specific qwirk in the settings or didnt do the research and troubleshooting. I also wont deny an audio issue with the Action 3, from the internal mics and usb mics. However, I would suggest using some cheap wireless usb c mic setup. The "common" cheap one found on ebay for $10-30 (depending on number of mics) is what i use and the audio is FANTASTIC now. 2 mics in the kit I got, small enough to fit in the helmet next to the cheek pad and the other tucked under the seat to get the best exhaust audio when desired. usb c wireless receiver is small enough to mount off the side of the Action 3, or you can run a short usb c extension and mount the receiver elsewhere if you dont want it hanging off the side of the camera.
That was a great overview of cameras you used, pointing out real world issues and flaws, but also the benefits and perks they have or lack. I'm currently looking for my first camera and am seriously considering the insta (360), and you video kinda confirmed what I needed to know: does it work? Thanks for your time and effort to share with all of us!
Im kind of astonished that you haven’t thought about getting an external mic set up instead of directly recording the sound to the camera. In my experience you get way better audio from using proper microphones and a recording device, yeah it can be a pain to sync up the audio in post but it enables you to use the proper mics and settings for what you’re recording. For example I was able to use a helmet microphone for my speech and put another mic under the seat to get the engine sound, that way I can hit my voice with denoising and get clear engine sound without any wind noise.
I was using the Ghost 4K plus last year and was very frustrated with the limited image stabilization like you. This will now be my second camera (e.g. rider shots) as I just dropped a signature on the 360 one RS. Value for money, this is hands down the best choice, especially when you consider the ease of using a standard 3.5 mic pin. Not to mention the ability to add 360. Researched for days and your video has validated my choice as a fellow moto creator. Thanks for the insight!
I had an Osmo action. Worked great for when I needed it and decided to get a Hero10+media mod when i started filming for youtube (first as last GoPro I'll every buy). For the first 3-4 months it worked great! Did everything I needed. Then one day it overheated (live in Florida so didn't think much of it). Then once or twice it would just shut off randomly, or not start up, even when removing and reinstalling a fully changed battery). Then one day the media mod stopped working and is no longer picking up audio and the camera keeps crashing. I've now switched back to my DJI.
I took a chance and ordered the Akaso V50X. Very impressed so far, and the price is right. I use it daily on my Goldwing. never issue and very good video day or night. No need for all of these fancy cameras, IMO.
Yea, the video is titles best action cameras for a motorcycle. It should had the caveat "for content creation. I agree...my Akaso Brave 6 plus has been great for 2 years. I have the V50X on the way for my other bike.
I found a camera which is specifically designed to be used with all kinds of helmets (motorbike, horse riding, bicycle) The Techalogic DC1. Its one of those barrel tube cameras, but it has 1 big difference.. It has 2 cameras built into it, one for forwards, one for backwards. It records both cameras in 1080p and as separate files, so you get video files for the front cam and videos files for the rear cam. It only has a pinhole microphone built into the camera, so i use one of those cheap digital audio recorders used for taking dictation. And run a little clip on mic to the inside of my helmet. Works like a charm. I get to record everything around me and i get to talk to the people in youtube land.
Sony FDR-X3000 is in my humble opinion the better choice...Floating lens for stabilization and no mic adapter needed I use a Sony Mic that just plugs into the back...it also has a remote that is not very great...ALSO!!..it is narrow and aerodynamic I don't notice it on my helmet. record's in 4K
Nice to hear the insta is working well. I'm interested in adding a secondary 360 camera later but what I would say about the Osmo action 3 setup that I use is that getting 2 tracks of audio separately is a gamechanger if anyone wants to up their sound game on motovlogs. I use the DJI wireless mic set with the osmo action 3 and I get left and right channels from separate microphones that I can place where ever I may choose. This is the best way to get near flawless audio as I can also adjust the gain separately on both channels. I ofcourse blend the channels together in post to get perfect stereo sound from each side. Motorcycle sounds can be absolutely perfect but so can the helmet audio. Then there is slightly more to be done on the edit but not much after you get the levels right straight on the mics. Plus this way there is no need to sync audio between the channels as both are written in to the helmet camera video file directly. Maybe I should make a video about this but historically these tech videos do not perform well on my channel...
4:10 And I thought someone had yer junk in a vice.😎 I have foam socks on my Hero 6 Blacks, to capture engine noise or conversations when stopped, but use my Sena's for narration using a spare 20S EVO connected to a Sony digital recorder. That gets anyone on the intercom and does a fair job on narration. I have three of those GoPro audio adapters I will sell you. Junk AND they wreck the GoPro waterproofness. I use a waterproof cable and a battery pack in my chest pocket to power my Hero 6 Blacks, without a GoPro internal battery. With 400GB SD, I can record 12hr of 2.7K non-stop. And, in editing, ignore the crap audio as well, cause I got it on the Sony via Sena I'm dying to afford an Insta360 x3, but I doubt I will change audio from the spare Sena 20s EVO set-up that I now use. It works.
Thankyou for the review. I use an Osmo with the cheapest (like $1) external mic which is tucked inside the flip helmets chin wind shield. All these condenser mics have huge amounts of gain and just gives horrible distortion. Easy to fix, solder, as a suggestion, a 150 Ohm resistor across the mic element contacts. Still too high then just solder a lower value resistor. No need to buy any bits to hang off the helmet.
Hey, bother. I use the One RS and I freaking love it. The audio is crap, but I'm getting around it pretty well with an external mic. I know you are not going to adopt my solution, but my camera lasts for almost an entire day on my rides - I have a power bank on the back of my helmet. No, it's not the monstrosity you are picturing in your head, and it works incredibly well. Thanks for the low-gain tip, by the way. Cheers!
I was with Gopro since the beginning when I found one of their original ones on a trail (before even the wide angle lens). Since then I had the HD Hero, Hero2, Hero3+ black and Hero4 session. The Session was my favorite by far until I installed the firmware upgrade. Now it required the app to change settings, which didn't work if I didn't have cell service. Shocker, most of my videos were FAR away from service. That put a bad taste in my mouth and I stopped buying gopros (and creating content) partly due to that as well as life getting in the way and RUclips changes. Now that I've considered getting back into it, I see no reason to buy back into gopro. Thank you for this video, it and many others are helping me make an informed decision in a market I haven't kept up with for quite some time.
I have a 360 x3. I love it but i would stay away from a helmet mounted one. You have to use their app to export clips. Its double the work to get the footage before making edits.
We went with the DJI Action 3 - and audio is definitely still the struggle. We are using a DJI Mic setup - they are great mic's, and you can adjust the gain down, but if you forget to do that, the audio is completely blown out. Audio is easily the biggest struggle. We may have to try a insta 360 some day, sounds cool. Thanks for the update!
I followed your progress with similar results. GoPro with all its issues. Then I switched to the Insta360 RS and I was impressed. To that i added the Rode wireless mic setup. But my latest is the Osmo Action 4 with the DJI wireless mic set. So far it is outstanding! I can control the gain on the microphone and in the camera. Late last night I mounted the mic in my helmet but I haven’t tried it that way yet.
Thank you, Your Dorkness! Your timing couldn't be better as I want to dip my toe in the video world and start exploring what can be recorded, edited and then shared. This vid probably saved my a ton of money. I just want the camera to work!! Most excellent dismount as well in the short clip, your moves should be patented!
Thank you so much for sharing that journey and what you've found to work for you! I'd love to hear the same for the associated editing software. Maybe that gets too techie for some, but I would have loved to hear how those cameras interleaved with any editing software. Maybe you just used the same the whole time and it's great. I've seen others try to make different videos and struggle with the choices.
You gotta try the Insta360 Go 2 as your helmet cam. I use it more as my helmet cam than the One RS (which i usually mount it on a stick on my bike). The controlled recording duration is heaven sent. I set mine at 30s recording only per press on Go 2, and i could selectively shoot only good scenes without having bulky video file in 1 go. The main disadvantage for Go 2 is that you can't really talk while on the go. Only built-in mic.
I’ve been using the original Osmo action and an Akaso 7LE for 3 years and they work well for me. I do have the mic adapter but decided to use a digital recorder instead which eliminated all the audio issues. Great convo, cheers, Eddie
What are your overall impressions of the Akaso 7 LE? I have an Akaso V-50 Pro, that I mostly use to video motorcycle rides. It's moderately good. Thanks in advance.
Thank You, great review, I have the original Osmo Action, Action 2 and the Action3. I’ve ridden with them all. They take great video. I use the DJI mic and it records great. I use the above on my Motorcycle and my road bike (bicycle) and it keeps the video very steady.
Thanks for this video, I've been using GoPro since the original Hero VGA version, loved it because that was all we had. Also have a Hero 3 HD, never an issue but no screen to see what you're recording, just a blinking light and no image stabilization, but still ok. a few years ago my daughter bought me my first "4K" in the Dragon 3 off of Amazon, worry free recording with a slight bit of image stabilization and a back screen to see you are recording, never an issue. Bought the GoPro Hero 10 Black and it has been the worst $400 ever spent! Great video and great stabilization quality but it shuts off randomly, 5 minutes into recording or at 65% battery (low battery), overheats in sub zero weather? Like Bud Light, never a GoPro ever again!! Just used your links and bought the 360 RS on Spring Special and the mic adapter off of Amazon. Thank you!!
Thanks for the video! The GoPros have the best video quality out of the box, you just have to acknowledge that. Unfortunately, they are also the most unreliable cams. The freezes or sudden shut-downs I can no longer count. And that's with different batteries. I therefore no longer use GoPros. The Osmo Action 1 had a too flat picture but otherwise worked reliably. The Osmo Action 3 is now on par with GoPro in terms of quality. However, both have no way to adjust the input sensitivity of external audio, so the audio - spoken inside the helmet - was always distorted, making it completely unusable. The topic of audio in the helmet with action cams is not really taken seriously by any manufacturer. Here I still see great potential.
Awesome vid! I've been contemplating the purchase of the Insta 360 for about a year now. your content here has made me decide. thank you! i have literally frustrated myself to not really enjoying the last few events i went to over the camera and recording issues and holding my crew up in the process,
I agree with a lot you've said and experienced the same problems. However I stopped using the One RS because the external mic gain control is not working as it should. It only reduces the overall volume instead of reducing the recording sensitivity, which would give you better dynamic range. It's such a shame that every action cam manufacturer messes up in one field or another. I would have gone for the Action 3 if it hadn't had the infamous focus issue. As of today I'm still on the Hero 7. It does have a bug that it doesn't like being shut off too early after having been turned on, but for the rest of the time it is working and the audio is best.
No idea about current market, but when I bought my action cam, (GP2 era) sony had them soundly beat (mechanical and digital image stabilizing, stereo input vs mono, 3.5mm and usb input, av/hdmi output cord available, bluetooth control with your phone, including downloading videos to your phone and being able to see what you were actively recording) For what it's worth, my memory says Fortnine hates his insta360's but still uses them due to creative shot angles.
I've been using a Hero 7 with a Ulanzi mic adapter and thankfully even after filming over 60 episodes on my most recent bike adventure, haven't had the issues that others complain about. I'm still getting decent quality and stabilization. It's never crashed on me either. It will get hot if you put it in your pocket and battery life isn't huge. I'd like to eventually get the insta360RS but man, it's like a thousand bucks to get one of those to my door.
Great comparison! I made the jump to insta360 last year. Have a oneRS with the regular lens, and one with the 360 lens. And have a Go2. Great combo. Just got the new handlebar remote, it's a game-changer!!
I agree with the original DJI Osmo Action. It never fails on me. Check out my audio, it works - but only if the microphone doesn't pick up too much. In other words, I use a mic that is not the best - and it means I doesn't pick up too much of my breathing or wind noise. I agree with the issues with the DJI Osmo Action 3. The audio doesn't work for several reasons: it picks up way too much, it's delayed when I start the camera. The camera overheats. But the visuals is just so good with the Osmo Action 3. I find that the DJI Mimo App is just hopeless, so never use it. My helmet camera continues to be the original DJI Osmo Action. It just works every time. I have never tried the Insta, would love to. However being on the road and travelling through deserts, I am scared of anything modular. Just too much dust and sand out there!
We're big insta fans on this channel. We record our joint audio via Rode Wireless Go2 merged onto one insta 360. Use the Action 3 as main helmet cam but use the audio off the second Insta camera. Just sold every Gopro, never going back.
I took your advice and ordered the Insta 360 One RS 4K via your link. I'm excited to see how this works. This video is awesome. I actually really like GoPro, but they do have some suck to them and you are right, they don't listen to us when we give feedback. So, I hope that this camera is gonna work for me!!!!
Great video and great timing! I'm another of the many people ready to swap away from GoPro and the hours of lost or useless footage. Looking forward to seeing more of the Insta video and audio. I think that will be my direction as well. Thanks man! ✌
Best thing to do is record audio separately with something like a DJI Wireless where the microphone records internally and doesn't need to send the audio anywhere to be plugged into the camera. It takes no time tj sync in post production with free software and adds just a few minutes to the work flow.
your headline snagged me here in the last day of January 2024. my kids bought me a hero three about 10 years ago, never tried it until about four years ago. I made one video of a ride. I took on my moto guzzi breva words on my favorite technical Road. I never watched the video itself but two years ago when I got a laptop to download these videos. once I started seeing that people were putting their knowledge and experience and rides on RUclips. I decided to put some of my experience on RUclips. I’ve got almost 800,000 miles behind bars, I am on my 100610 7th and 108th motorcycles right now, all but five of the street, bikes and dirt bikes have been Japanese, 4 moto guzzi, One BMW, three Spanish trials, bikes, Beto, gas, gas,fantic.. several road racing machines on which I won six championships, two time national champion.. my second camera is a prism tube camera, which is literally about the size of a roll of nickels and tougher than a roll of nickels. It fell off of my helmet, one day, my fault, and bounced at least 5 feet in the air twice. My buddy following me, saw it bouncing on the asphalt at about 60 miles an hour. He thought it was something that fell off of my machine. it still works. Now that I have an external microphone attached to it, at least it has a sort of tether. 90% of my videos on RUclips, I don’t have money. Less than 200, or made with the GoPro hero three or the tube camera. I want to get a new camera with stabilization that I never knew existed.. there are so many people telling me they know the best camera, but they’re all different from person to person I was just about to buy the akaon brave 6 plus And the optional $20 external microphone, so that I can mount the microphone inside the ear pocket of my helmet, wrapped with a windsock, which, if you watch any of my videos with riding in them, you can hear that it works pretty well inside a modular, full face helmet ear pocket.. I like the price of the brave, 6+ helmet, $129. The video review were compared all of that company’s cameras, and he said that one was better than even the newest one for motorcycle use with an external mic. .. have you ever reviewed any of those akaso cameras? I don’t want to start buying a bunch of different cameras, and a bunch of different accessories and batteries and chargers, because I am not a geek, I don’t even know how to edit two videos together yet. I was able to do it with a used laptop I bought from a friend that is a computer specialist. But he updated my computer with a new something to give me larger storage capacity, and I lost that program that I was able to merge videos and crop videos with. And watching RUclips videos on how to do it, every instructor on RUclips starts off with a simple sentence, then they lose me instantly when they start assuming I understand the Computer business lingo.. as a result, all my videos are one take start to finish, even the long ones.. I have been trying for years to get the wrong timestamp off of my videos using my prism tube camera. It can’t be done. I was exchanging emails with the tech department, they keep telling me I need to plug the camera in to my laptop which I do. but the website doesn’t see my Camera so I can’t make any changes such as the timestamp which is wrong in all my prism tube videos on my YT Channel.. So I have it narrowed down to your recommendation, the osmo action, three cam, which you say hasta have an in-line volume control.. or the akaso brave 6 plus and the external $20 microphone.. as time goes on here, I’m getting less and less confused, because the brave six is only $129 incomes with pounds of included attachments.. to tell you the truth, I would not even be shopping for a new camera until I found out that there is such a thing as stabilization. Because I am pleased with the sound quality and especially the video quality of my prism tube, camera, the most, and the GoPro ain’t bad. I appreciate your knowledge and the way you make videos. You get right at it right out of the gate without childish graphics or annoying elevator music. I subscribed and I’ll be watching. Thanks.
After a ton of research, I bought the original DJI Osmo action after being frustrated with a used GoPro 5. Audio challenges aside, the original Osmo Action is a great camera. However, one thing that seldom gets mentioned is that it is HEAVY in comparison to my GoPro 5. Like double (or slightly more) the weight of the GoPro5. Not an issue when tripod or handlebar mounted, but a significant factor if it's on your helmet or on the end of a stick all day. It will test the integrity of your mounts, and can be fatiguing. Otherwise a great value.
I use a Zoom F2 BT as my audio recorder which has 32 bit float so audio level is never an issue. Even if it is severely clipped you just lower the audio level in post and all the info is there and sounds great. The F2 unit itself is tiny and I tuck in an inside pocket in my jacket. It would cause additional injury in an accident. You are wired to your helmet tho but I don’t find it an issue. You do have to sync the audio in post but that’s easy. With the stock mic it’s easy to overdrive if I get excited. A better mic would solve that. That main issue I have is I either forget to turn it on or turn it off. My fault. It’s well worth looking into. 😉🖖🏼
The Action 3 got minus volume control adjustment in the camera in an firmware update. The main problem for me is that it cannot take mic in and external power at the same time.
I swear by the Insta360 because the image stabilization is awesome and, more importantly, I don't have to worry about where it's pointing. You just hit record, forget that it's there and focus 100% on your riding. The absolute last thing I want to have to think about when I'm out riding is the camera.
I have had GoPros since the Hero3 and currently using a 9 and 10 to film forward and rear views of my aeroplane flights. I need to rely on 2 hours continuous but the BS coming out of GoPro about how to fix overheating, stuttering pan shots in linear, uncommanded switching on and just stopping. GoPro are like politicians, deny, deny, deny. THEY KNOW THE EXTENT OF THEIR CRAP SOFTWARE AND THE HUGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE AFFECTED ! 😡😡. It's all left to the forums and customers to F*** off and sort it out for themselves 'cos they just want your money. You got it dead right with your cynical dig at GoPro. The hours, days, I've spent trawling RUclips and forums for answers, audio delay causing lip sync issues, took me weeks before I found it was the (expensive) GoPro mic adapter, loads and loads of other issues, some major, some minor. You got it right again, I just want the thing to work ! That should be the deal. You give me money, and I will give you a camera that does what I said it would. Thanks for your comparison, it confirms what I, and thousands of others think about GoPro and I will take a serious look at the insta360.
I keep going back to my old simple GoPro hero three, and my Extremely simple prism tube cameras… The prism tube can be worked even wearing gloves riding my motorcycle, and it is either on or off. I mount the included external microphone in the ear pocket inside my helmet wrapped in microphone foam filter. The included helmet mount is designed to attach to the side of the helmet. I was able to adapt a microphone holder, to hold the helmet and mount the helmet in the front of my chin bar to get a 180° field of view with my prism tube camera.. my GoPro in my prism tube videos quality is pretty good. They’re about the same. And using a cheap external mic I bought on eBay from China for the GoPro hero three, with a foam microphone filter mounted inside the ear pocket of my full face helmet, The sound quality is about the same as the prism tube.. my favorite is the prism to a bit does not take still photos. Only video.. my prism tube fell off while I was doing about 50 miles an hour, and it bounced several times on an asphalt road. A buddy that was riding behind me spotted it bouncing. It is in a metal tube literally, about the size of a roll of nickels. That is one tough little bastard because it still works fine.. The reason it fell off is because I did not have the ball socket adjustment tight enough comet was my first time using the camera, and it was my fault.
Great video and we appreciate the advice! Having only used a GoPro 7 and 8... This is incredibly helpful and insightful, I've been thinking of going to an Insta360 for the type of hard riding I do, to better capture the environment I'm riding through.
Can you do a tutorial on the Insta 360 rs motorcycle kit? How to use it? How to mount it? How do you talk to it while riding? Editing software you use? I have a Cardo pac talk. How can I use it to communicate with my group, music, phone features in combination with the insta? I that possible? Best place to mount it? On Helmet? I am gong on a 500 mile off road trip with my group in early April on my T7. I have become the default cameraman for the group. Any help would be great. Or if you know a good tutorial on RUclips for this? Thanks. Love your video's
A great no bs review. I have the insta360 x3 and quite like it, though editing time can really balloon when you start playing around with the full 360 recording.
I use OA1 & OA3 along with the DJI wireless mics. Have a Hero9 that's typical GoPro Junk. The wireless mic paired with the OA3 is a game changer. I can then use the OA1 mounted all over the bike as well as one of the wireless mics. I'm set! :)
Right finally somebody giving a review of products where I want to actually ask a question. So I’m not a techie person at all. I just want to get on that motorcycle, haul ass, smile, come home and check out a video of the ride. Especially if something cool or uncool happens. I don’t do much social media posting, actually zero social media posting. I simply want a really good quality dash cam that I can hook up to the bike so that every time I start up the Camera starts up. Insta 360? Think that’s the way to go? Curious to know your thoughts. Also, in case you’re wondering not interested in talking while riding. I’m too busy smiling and laughing. Appreciate it.
Thank goodness that i found your vid. I was getting ready to take the dive into some higher quality video equipment (other than my smartphone). Now i have some real choices to consider. Thanks!
GoPro is a NO GO, Bought in at the H-8 point, have had good, but the stuff I have missed or lost bites. Thanks for the info and as always great content.
I want to love the insta360 camera, I really do, I bought the 1" sensor with plans to buy another plus and 1" insta360n sensor. BUT my major issue with the Insta360 is that is is setup to only make 30 minute clips. It stops recording at 30 minutes. I have to restart the camera after 30 minutes. My videos are only 10-45 minutes but I record 60-120 minutes. I could record 45-60 minutes with my Hero 7's and almost infinite with my Hero 4 blacks. Gopros Hero 4's and older could be used with external battery packs as well as power bricks. I have been unsuccessful in using extended batteries or bricks on Hero 5-7's. I have not bought another Gopro model sense. Instead, I saw the 1" sensor Insta360 4k action cam and jumped on that. Anyhow, if you don't know, in Europe, anything camera sold that records video over 30 minutes is taxed more. So Insta360 is I guess trying to reduces taxes under EU laws.
Nice review, man :-) Just stumbled over your channel and was happy to see you drive a Honda CRF. I got one just last year myself :-) I have an Insta 360 One X2 and it is one of the best and most useful cameras that I have ever bought. Don't use it much for motorcycling, but sailing and it's f*cking awesome. ;-)
I use a GoPro hero 7 black and have for years now, experienced only 1 lock up so far, other than that, no issues (also use 3rd party batteries). I use it with a foam wind slayer and it's great for me. Never wanted to spend $50 for the mic adapter but I don't care about recording my own speech so that is ok. At lower speeds it even picks up my audio really well... Perhaps the insta360 x3 will be my next one...
I know it's on old video but I just bought the old one R version used and am super stoked to upgrade off the old Sena Prism Tube camera I've been using!
I really like my original Osmo Action, but I think it lacks a remote control for use at the rear of the bike. Regarding the sound. I bought a microphone, cut a sponge into a 4x4x4cm square, made a hole that fitted the microphone and taped it to the back of my helmet to get the sound from the exhaust. Working well below 80kmh😉😉
There were no surprises for me based on what I've heard from many motorcycle content creators, but I still enjoyed the video. Thanks. I have a GoPro 7 and have used it very little. I download and reformat the cards in an effort to prevent data corruption issues. I also buy the recommended cards with ample data transfer speed, but I suspect the minor overheating problems I've had are but a harbinger of inevitable Hero failure to come. I've been thinking about an Insta360 even though the fish eye 360 degree gimmick doesn't appeal to me and is about played out on RUclips. I was reluctant because the file format is proprietary and their video editing software doesn't run under Linux, but apparently their Android video editing app is pretty good.
I’ve never had an issue with my GoPro Hero 9 up until this past weekend when the media mod and GoPro failed to record any audio. It was actually quite reliable for me till Saturday. I wasn’t recording in motorcycle content it was recording a wedding in a small dry room and I was able to stealth mount it to a shelf. I’m not sure what’s wrong or what happened. I haven’t like the media mod since I got it. It’s really a pain in the ass to change batteries. I’m definitely considering getting an insta 360 for our summer trips. I was thinking of one x2. I’d still use the GoPro just not the media mod.
I have the insta360 One R. One issue I don’t particularly like about it is you have to put it in a case which makes it a much larger helmet cam. Plus if you want to change the battery you have to pull it out of the case. The mic is also not very good. But like you said the video quality is ok. I also have there X3 which I like better but doesn’t fit well for a helmet cam. The mics are better to on the X3. How did you like the DJI action camera. I heard that they now connect wirelessly with their wireless mic system that allows you to Velcro the mic on the inside of the chin bar. That seems like a good helmet blogging system.
Really appreciate this. I’m running two Osmo Actions because of the cheap factor. Fun fact, the internal mic on one of mine crapped the bed and it was going to cost as much as the unit cost me to repair it.
Fantastic and informative video, thank you. I personally use a GoPro Hero8 and it's been working well for me and I record very fast paced action (think sportbikes on a racetrack) but will look into getting an Insta 360 One RS once it's time to upgrade. Subbed!

But what is the actual microphone you use? That seems to be a Motorcycle RUclipsr trade secret because no one seems to talk about that component of the setup.
I need a microphone volume control. I’ve got the Osmo Action 3 and my mic is always peaking whenever I raise my voice, any time I get excited
Just bought my first action camera (Insta360 One RS). Will see how it works. Thanks for the video Ben ❤
Hi ! Did you try the Runcam 5 orange ? It seems like a great action cam, cheap too ! And it's quite small and light :)
@@GR1MKA1 meanwhile I switched my setup to an Osmo Action 3 and also did extensive testing to find the right microphone for my motovlog setup. I also have a video about it on my channel, but it's in German.
I found two solutions that worked very well with the Osmo Action 3:
Why can't every RUclipsr do reviews like this!?? No bs, just honest reviews.
Awesome job brotha!
That’s because most are paid influencers
Taxes too high, stuff too expensive. Need more money.
Lying on camera = job
Side mounting is horrible
This past year has been painful for me and my relationship with GoPro….god I hate those cameras when they fail. When they work….pure awesomeness. I’m now at the point however, after investing heavily into the GoPro eco-system, feeling like it’s time for a change. So good timing on your part with this video.
Thanks!!
Do it! Sooooo happy with all my insta 360 kit. And the accessories are crazy well priced!
Couldn't have said it better myself!
I'm sorta in the same place.
careful. Especially if you use them often. He’s in a honeymoon period. I hate GoPro too though but the quality can’t be beat for now.
100% agree with you on the "not motorcycle friendly" camera ecosystems. I could take a few of them and make the near perfect motorcycle camera. My Hero 8 just pisses me off most of the time and I end up not even filming. Maybe I should start my own camera company...
😆😆
I started with Chinese knock-offs, until I decided to get more serious. After researching all of Go-Pro's problems, I chose the Osmo Action 3. For my helmet set up, I use an inline atenuator cable that keeps the audio from blowing out. My external digital mini-boom mic has a manual gain control on it. It all seems to work great so far. Thanks for the video!
Which attenuator and mic are you using?
Which mic?
There's more than a few people asking about this "external digital mini-boom mic has a manual gain control" comment. Can you clarify @klrnomad on what it is?
@@kwtvideovault_1 YEA KLR WHICH FREAKING MIC CYBER BULLY STOP IGNORING US
@@kwtvideovault_1 go comment on his short, I just did
I have the Action 3.
IMO this camera is nearly perfect.
does the DJIs wireless Mic fit well inside the helmet?
10:35 That dismount was awesome! It gets a 10 in my book. 😂
⭕️yeah 🤣🤣🤣my thoughts exactly...
bounce ...SLAMMED to the ground n kept walking like "hey wazzup bruh, i gotcha"
I love it when you complain! You're always RIGHT. My GoPro is endlessly frustrating. I wish I'd tried an Insta360 or Drift instead. Thanks!
Can you tell my wife the thing about me always being right? lol
@@DorkintheRoad 🤣
Gopro dont tell you this but you need to do a factory reset after every firmware update. You loose the resets but you can easily redo them.
The other thing to do is to do a full format of the sdcard, on a laptop or pc. Not the quick format but the full format that takes about 45mins. The format on the gopro leaves behind data that may have a conflict withe new firmware.
My gopro11 and 10 have stopped being glitchy now
Fantastic job being straight forward about the various issues running cameras on bikes. Thanks!
Nah, those cameras are crap and sure, for dashcam footage but that's about it. They don't hold a candle to a GoPro, DJI or Insta360
I’m an Osmo Action user…
Because it Just Works!
Looks like the Action 3's latest update includes a negative dB gain for external mics, precisely what we'd need: ruclips.net/video/XXqjH1fbWAM/видео.html
This is probably the camera I'm going to get, as the video quality appears better to me than the One RS, along with the same reliability (and cold performances).
*Edit*
Mmm.. seems like the gain still does not seem to be fixing the clipping issues, but mic volume control might? I guess I'll take Ben's advice and consider the One RS harder..
I"ve had literally every GoPro cam except one....I also got an Insta360 X3 the first day it came out....and I use it now all the time. So easy, faster and gets the best footage asI can decide after recording, what I want to see... I love my 360 and it's my go to now for speed and ease and coverage.
What kind of battery life does the X3 have when recording?
4:10 And I thought someone had yer junk in a vice.😎
I have foam socks on my Hero 6 Blacks, to capture engine noise or conversations when stopped, but use my Sena's for narration using a spare 20S EVO connected to a Sony digital recorder.
And, in editing, ignore the crap audio as well, cause I got it on the Sony via Sena
I'm dying to afford an Insta360 x3, but I doubt I will change audio from the spare Sena 20s EVO set-up that I now use.
What digital recorder are you using?
@@I_am_archie it is a Sony digital recorder. Cheap and cheerful and the audit is pretty good
@@WindyTherapy thank you
What are your overall impressions of the Akaso 7 LE? I have an Akaso V-50 Pro, that I mostly use to video motorcycle rides. It's moderately good. Thanks in advance.
Thank You, great review,
I have the original Osmo Action, Action 2 and the Action3. I’ve ridden with them all. They take great video.
I use the DJI mic and it records great.
I use the above on my Motorcycle and my road bike (bicycle) and it keeps the video very steady.
I've been using the insta 360 One RS for about a year now. It's been surprisingly durable with how many times I've wiped out
Yup, I keep scratching the 360 lens. But just keep polishing them out!
No idea about current market, but when I bought my action cam, (GP2 era) sony had them soundly beat (mechanical and digital image stabilizing, stereo input vs mono, 3.5mm and usb input, av/hdmi output cord available, bluetooth control with your phone, including downloading videos to your phone and being able to see what you were actively recording)
For what it's worth, my memory says Fortnine hates his insta360's but still uses them due to creative shot angles.
Perfect timing! I have spent the last week agonizing over a camera and I come here and you have a video for me. Thanks for a great video
Man thanks, what exactly I was trying to find is your video
Thanks man! ✌
In this day and age, just good info. Thanks Ben.
Best thing to do is record audio separately with something like a DJI Wireless where the microphone records internally and doesn't need to send the audio anywhere to be plugged into the camera. It takes no time tj sync in post production with free software and adds just a few minutes to the work flow.
Do you have any tips for a good tool for postproduction, which software ro you use?
your headline snagged me here in the last day of January 2024.
my kids bought me a hero three about 10 years ago, never tried it until about four years ago.
I want to get a new camera with stabilization that I never knew existed..
there are so many people telling me they know the best camera, but they’re all different from person to person
I was just about to buy the akaon brave 6 plus And the optional $20 external microphone, so that I can mount the microphone inside the ear pocket of my helmet, wrapped with a windsock, which, if you watch any of my videos with riding in them, you can hear that it works pretty well inside a modular, full face helmet ear pocket..
I also have the Insta360 One RS (1 x 4k & also 1 x 360) with the mic adapter and get great video and audio. Super pleased with the results.
Thank you for your video , I am new moto blogger I thought I will buy go pro 10 but after see your video I choose insta 360.
If you just want to dash cam that drift camera is probably the best choice
Thank goodness that i found your vid. I was getting ready to take the dive into some higher quality video equipment (other than my smartphone). Now i have some real choices to consider. Thanks!
GoPro is a NO GO, Bought in at the H-8 point, have had good, but the stuff I have missed or lost bites.
Thanks for the info and as always great content.
Great reviews. I’ve been trying to research all of these options and you’ve helped a great deal. Thanks!
Finally!
An action camera review where I can make an educated decision.
Guess what's on my birthday wish list next month 😉
I know it's on old video but I just bought the old one R version used and am super stoked to upgrade off the old Sena Prism Tube camera I've been using!
I really like my original Osmo Action, but I think it lacks a remote control for use at the rear of the bike. Regarding the sound. I bought a microphone, cut a sponge into a 4x4x4cm square, made a hole that fitted the microphone and taped it to the back of my helmet to get the sound from the exhaust. Working well below 80kmh😉😉
Thanks Ben, this is the video I've been waiting for!
We appreciate you going through all the cameras . I had many cameras most are
Junk . Thanks Dirt road jim
Fantastic and informative video, thank you. I personally use a GoPro Hero8 and it's been working well for me and I record very fast paced action (think sportbikes on a racetrack) but will look into getting an Insta 360 One RS once it's time to upgrade. Subbed!
