USB-C to 3.5mm Mic Adapters - DJI Osmo Action 3 & Action 4 Owners watch THIS for better audio!

- There is so much confusion around the DJI Osmo Action 3 and how to connect an external 3.5mm microphone. Some people suggest cheap USB-C to TRRS adapters while others insist using a TRS adapter. But which cable really provides the best audio quality when connecting a mic to your Action 3? And why does TRRS / TRS even matter? Watch this video to find out!
DISCLAIMER: The Digital/ Analog TRS/TRRS concept can take A LOT longer than 5 minutes to fully understand. This video is intended for other DJI Action 3 Owners who simply want to know which USB-C to 3.5mm adapter they should buy for their mic.
If you're microphone has a TRRS connector, I would suggest a TRRS to TRS Adapter (like the RODE SC3) and then into a BOYA BY-K4.

do you realize how beneficial this info is! most Chanel's only tell you what to buy and not why to buy one over the other! thank you!
brilliant, I was getting crap audio and didn't know why. Now I've just ordered the right cable. thanks
After 3 years of randomly buying dongles, I finally understand why some work and some sound like trash.
More REAL information!! THANK YOU! I’m considering the OA3 as my upgrade purchase and this helped me understand my audio options. As an OLD (82) newbie to digital photography, I need all the help I can get!😂 Again, thanks… take care.
Thank you, you've solved my problem within two minutes of the start of the video. Excellent channel!
Very useful. Other videos on this topic did not provide any clarity. You did! Thank you!
Wayne, thanks for making these videos. I really hope to get my audio sounding this good. 👊🏼 nice to see a channel dedicated to producing audio. All these filing channels just talk about video and never audio.
I swear I have been buying usb c to trrs to use my microphone with my s23 ultra to create content and I almost went crazy because I couldn't fix the problem with the voice and I bought like 3 different cable adapters to try and fix it, until I saw Ur video today, thank you from deep inside my heart for solving this dilemma to me ❤
Just the info I was looking for. Big thanks!
Great video. Saved me a bit of headache & confusion. Thank you!
BIG THANKS!!!!! This video really helps me to understand this whole confusion!!!!
Thanks for this video. I'm thinking of switching from GoPro to DJI given GoPro troubles. Helpful video.
Great video. Cleared man things up. Thanks for your help.
Brother! wow! Your explanation on all of this is just perfect! thank you so much!
Thanks heaps I just purchased a DJI action 3 and will buy the usb c trs adapter.
Finally i found this solution about audio in oa3 distortion.. thank alot mate 😊
Very well explained difference between TRS and TRRS. I bought DJI Osmo 4 and I'm looking for a good setup for motovlogging. Generally, the sound of the engine means more to me than my speech, but for now, I don't have a clear idea of how to do it without having a hundred cables and accessories. First, I'll look for the Osmo Action 3.5mm Audio Adapter, which I think is designed for motorcyclists. As for recording two separate audio channels, I'll have to figure that out later.
This information and knowledge will be well valued and applied thanks!!
I've bought so many things from Boya
Emm... as for the TRS/TRRS issue, you made a good point.
Great, thanks for sharing
I have a number of BOYA products and they all seem high quality. And speaking of TRS/TRRS, I didn't even mention about "smart sensing" TRRS connectors that detect the type of audio jack they're plugged into and send the audio signal accordingly... but that seems like another video for another day lol!
Thank you! 🙏 That was really helpful!
Thank you for clearing this up. Waiting on the BY-K4 thanks to your vid. Now to figure out adding a second audio input to record a helmet intercom to the action 3. Thanks man. Subscribed and liked!
Thank you for making all confusion vaporized 👍🏻✔️🎉
very interesting, thank you for sharing big difference, in sound quality.
extremely useful video thank you sir
Just what we all needed!
Thanks to your video I just got me a Hollyland 3.5mm TRS to Type-C Cable, so with just one cable I have a nearly pro audio with my Dji Action 3! As a mic I use a Rode VideoMicro mic and I am Super happy! 😊
Which one should i use for motovlogs?
That's a lot of terminology for a newbie! I had to rewind (is that still a term used in video???) and re-listen to get it through my thick head, but it sunk in and I purchased the adapter you mentioned, along with a compatible mic, and it works great on my Osmo Action 3. Thanks for the thorough and clear explanation. Very helpful thanks :)
Thanks for making this all clear. You're a good teacher :)
Maan this was so helpful thank you! I go Rode ViceoMicro and bought their SC7 cable and also TRRS to USB C and was wondering why it records with high pitch noise. Now it makes sense.
but wait does this also apply when Im connecting it to the phone? should that be also TRS or TRRS in this case?
Very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the information, i was searching like crazy for a TRRS working adapter that doesn't sounds like crap, now everything is so clear, only buy TRS adapter, thank you !
If you have a TRRS mic, you can add a RODE SC3 cable with a BOYA BY-K4 to get it to work correctly.
Thanks ! @@WayneRECs
Terrific information!
Awesome! I am just starting vlogging...how ever when I have my purple panda lav mic on my dji, I get some crazy weird distortion, even with the Dji at -12dB on the mic input. I am using a Google Usb C to headphone plug - after watching this video I am hoping using a USB C to TRS cable will resolve the issue!
Awesome explanation!
Thanks so much! I appreciate you saying so!
Very good info. Oh my I’ve been misinformed from the past. Thank you for the lesson
Thanks Nestor! I think a lot of this also applies to the Action 2!
Wow thank you so much, you saved so much of my time
Finally some correct information, just got my action 3 and trying to use it with the rode wireless go2, just bought the cheap usb-c phone adapter and sounds like crap lol, now just ordered the sennheiser usb-c to trs as boya seems to be out of stock in the Uk, many thanks for clearing this up!
Any samples of new sound mate ?
Big fan of the Senn MKE-400 and love using it on my Lumix S5ii - but wasn't getting as good results on my iPhone with an adaptor.....now I know why - thanks for this video! I saw over on B&H that Sennheiser actually has a locking usb-c to 3.5 cable specifically for the little MKE mics - they really should have included this in their kit; it's called the Sennheiser CL 35 USB-C Locking 3.5mm -it's the same blue coil cable - high quality with locking ring.
Your video carries very much information. Thank you for making such video.👌👍
I need your help for…👇
I wish to record videos on a smartphone(iPhone or Android) or camera(DSLR-like) with professional audio connecting the newly purchased ‘iRig PRE 2’ which has a 3.5mm output jack that goes into the earphones or mic port of a smartphone or camera. But nowadays smartphones and cameras have type C port input so what type of 3.5mm to typeC converter can I use? Please.
Does the Apple original and Samsung original adapter with DAC chip inside work with any smartphone and any camera?
Thank you soo much for clearing the confusion.
I had a type c microphone but it was too loud so I decided to switch back to my auxillary microphone (Was hoping I could just get a mircophone without any adapters but oh well)
I think I got the TRRS because it did not give me ANY audio lol. I'll get the TRS and hope for the best haha.
Hey again! Fantastic, thanks for this :)
Cool and very informative video. Many thanks!
For my use case, I'd love to be able to BOTH have an external mike, as well as charge the Osmo 4 from an external power brick using the USB-C cable.
Is there a good dongle that essentially splits USB-C into TRS mic outlet plus an extra USB-C for charging?
You explained it very well, what microphone do you use on a daily basis? I mean professional microphone?
Thank u. I now understand. Purchased🇦🇺👍
thanks. nice content
Hi Wayne! I just bought the DJI Osmo mainly for skiing (I can't get enough of skiing), but I am considering using this camera for vlogs sometimes as the SONY A7RII's weight is a nightmare, and although it has some super cinematic colours, it's not worth lugging it all around. Thanks for telling me how to use the USB-C jack to plug my RODE microphone in! By the way, congrats on hitting 1.4K subs!
Thanks Isaac! Awesome that you found a new activity! You'll have to report back as to how the Action 3's "invisible" selfie stick is when they implement it and you're on the slopes! Personally, I think the convenience of the Action 3 is one of its strengths and I've been shooting a variety of different content with mine just about everyday. Hope you enjoy yours just as much!
@@WayneRECs I would love the try the feature on the slopes today!
@@WayneRECs you can remove the selfie stick with tje AI editor in DJI Mimo
I listened to entire video, I admire you are professional, but I couldn’t find my solution to my problem! I have rode mic with type C output port and sound card (mixer) with 3.5 mm ports and 48v ports. Which kind of cable or converter should buy to transfer the audio from Type C mic to 3.5 mm sound card ? Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you brother
Helpful! Thanks 👏
Thanks for your comment Joel!
Thank you very much. Everything is a little clearer. I have an action 3 and I bought the boya by-k4. I have to attach a microphone to my helmet to ride a motorcycle. Do I need to buy a trs or trrs wired microphone? Or another adapter that sits between the boya and the microphone? Do you have a link? I'm desperate 😔tkanks
Great video! Just wondering, is this adapter compatible with DJI RC2 controller (mini pro 4)? Thanks in advance.
Thank you for this❤. And do you think K4 and K2 would not have any difference output at all?
Great information, So this is all good, i need the BY K4 TRS to connect to a Helmet Mic, so what mic do I get to do this? DJI sure didnt do a good job with a Mic plan!
Great video. Would a USB C to TRS work ?
What are your thoughts on the Saramonic SR-C2001 ?
This video helped me a lot and decided to change from go pro hero 10 to DJI Osmo Action 3 because it accepts 3rd party USB to 3.5mm
So it does accepts TRS or TRRS!
What USB-C to 3.5mm cable did you use? I bought one from the internet and seems to be not working.
@@undaplavian I currently have a gopro hero 10, with the image and video quality for gopro and despite it over heats during long recording. I am thinking to go to DJI and came along with this helpful video. Seems to accept TRS/TRRS, and my main concern from this is am planning to feed the audio from an audio mixer.
@@ceejayfarley7 I do not know that that means, but I talked to the support about this and this was their recommendation to connect a TRS mic.
For the female jack 3.5mm please see the recommnded accessories:
1. Mailada: C35L/T;
2. BOYA: BY-K2
3. Saramonic: SR-C2001;
@@undaplavian this is nice, thank you for the information! I might get a dji soon
The following I had tested with the Osmo Action 3 for audio. 1 - anything that for ipad will work. I tried usb c otg with usb sound card it work for my ipad and it work for the osmo 3. USB C audio adaptor made by apple for ipad or those made by samsung work perfectly. Ugreen usb audio adaptor with DAC will work too.
The aftermath 4 months after...
I did buy a Boya BY-K4 after watching your video. Thanks for the recommendation. It works well.
However, there's a "traditional" problem when I'm filming my phone or action cam like Sony RX0 with any external mic, the noise level rises drastically when I stop talking. It is obvious that these tiny electronic gadgets were trying to maintain the gain level by "compensating" the silence continuously. This didn't happen when I was using the internal mic of my cellphone.
And yesterday I got my Saramonic SR-EA2U, which is a simple USB Type-C audio for phones. The sound quality is just as good. Yet there's no such sharp increase of noise level in the silent part of recording. This reminds me of you saying digital input can be the future trend.
I was just wondering... have you ever experienced such problem of higher noise level in silent parts of recording with external mic? For me, it's almost universal. This still happened even when I connect the Rodecaster Pro II with Sony ZV-1 (not as serious as in other cases). Of course, I know to switch off the auto-level functionality of these devices. Yet that keeps bugging me somehow. Digital input could be really better in this respect.
Wayne, Thanks for another excellent and informative video. I found an even simpler single cable solution with no dongles using the Sennheiser CL 35 USB-C Locking 3.5mm TRS to USB Type-C Coiled Cable (Mfr # 509262). I found it on B&H. I was able to connect the MKE200 directly to the USB-C on Action3 - No Boya adapter required.
Hey David! Great find! Aside from the BY-K4, I also have/use a BOYA BY-K2 which is a USB-C to 3.5mm male mic adapter (though it's not nicely coiled that the Sennheiser CL 35!) I like the CL 35 as it has a locking connector if you need that, but the price tag feels just a little too steep...
@@WayneRECs I agree the price is a little steep at $30 for Sennheiser vs. $19 for Boya dongle. but for me, it was worth an extra $11 to get a locking connector, coiled cord, and elimination of another dongle. I now just leave the locked cord permanently attached to the MKE200 and only have to connect the USB-C to the Action 3 and I am up and running.
Thanks!
Salamat!
Thanks you so much this shit taught me a lot !! I had the apple adapters for head phone thinking it would work with my new wireless mic. Had I not seen this video I would have been screwed on my upcoming trip. So thanks now I have the correct connectors!!
Awesome! Glad it helped! Have a great trip!
I really need your advice on this matter,
I am planning to buy boya M1 pro which comes with a conventional TRRS jack, if i attach the TRRS jack to a "TRRS to a TRS adapter" and then connect it with boya boya K4,and then to dji action 3 will this sound good? or do i have to buy a mic that comes with a TRS output only?
please help👏
What if you used the TRS to TRRS cable with a headphone adapter? Will it sound better? Also, do you know if any adapters that work for the Osmo Action 3 that also allows passthrough charging while using an external mic?
Thank you for this awesome explanation.
I have two questions though:
1.: Would it work to connect the TRSTRRS cable with any other 3.5mmUSB-C DAC adapter?
And 2.: what's your opinion on investing in a Rode VideoMic Go II and connecting directly via USB-C to the Osmo Action 3?
Hi, thanks for your comment! To answer your questions:
1) There is a wide variety of success when using TRRS to USB-C and/or TRS to TRRS adapters or any variations on these. A lot depends on the design of the 3.5mm to USB-C adapter. If it's a mic adapter, I've successfully used a TRRS mic into a TRRS to TRS adapter into the BY-K4. However, using some kind of TRRS to USB-C adapter instead, may not transmit the full audio signal. I think that answers your question?
2) While I like the VideoMic GO II, if you're looking to invest ~$100 USD, I'd seriously look at the new Deity V-Mic D4. It retails at $99 and has a USB-C output & a gain knob on the mic for more control. It also comes with better wind protection. Check out this video for my experience with it: ruclips.net/video/I28Kq0k1-ZQ/видео.html
Personally, when it comes to how the Action 3 handles audio, I've discovered you're much better off using a mic that has some kind of gain control as the Action 3's gain seems to be more of a digital volume control than and analog gain control.
Thank YOU!
You're welcome! Hope it helped!
So I’ve got the BOYA TRS adapter you’ve mentioned, does this mean I can use any standard 3.5mm jack Lav mic for my motorcycle helmet?
Or do I now need to look for a specific lav mic as well?
Also any recommendations for a quality mic under $120CAD?
Edit: Let me know if this works please and thanks, or if I’m missing something.
DJI Osmo Action 3 > USBC to TRS > Rode Lav 2 Mic > into motorcycle helmet.
Am I missing any components and should I add a dead cat cover for the mic?
Which is better for motorcycle? Rode Lav 2 or Rode Lav GO?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks
Thanks for great view man, very helpful for me to decide after buy DJI action 3 how and which the best one mic adapter, because this camera have good feature for Motovloging
Dont fall for it. Osmo Action 3 is Pathetic for motovlogging . You'll have voice clipping badly. I've wasted a lot of money with different mics and adapters. This camera has serious bugs
@@aqeeqansari yes I am facing same aduio clipping issue
@@aqeeqansari Hey man, do you have any clip with this audio clipping issue? I have a GoPro hero 9 that I use for Motovlogging and I have audio clipping issues at speeds higher than 70km/h, so I was looking to change for the OA3 but if it has the same issue I don't see the point of swapping

Hi Wayne,
I bought a Boya BY-M1 Pro Omnidirectional Lavalier Condenser Microphone for my DJI Osmo Action 4. What type of coverter or converters do I need to make it work?
If you could amswer this for - between GRENARO J13 Wireless Microphone & action 4 as well.
Thanks in advance!
Have you tried boya by k2 or by k4 with iphone 15 pro series? I am still confused which one to buy to connect rode video micro ….
In the case of a TS microphone, would it work fine with a TRS adaptor? (One audio channel of course)
@Wayne RECs - do you know of a way to get replacement USB-C cover/door for the Action 3?
The door either falls off or I have to remove the cover/door to connect the USB-C cable. I contacted DJI but the tech wasn't familiar with the cover/door and told me that since I didn't have the part number he couldn't find it. I'm wondering if the cover/door from the Action 2 would fit - but all the suppliers I could find seem to be non-USA. I got the impression that the cover/door for Action 2 was not allowed to be sold in the USA for some reason.
Let me know if you know the history for the Action 2 cover/door and if it might be usable on Action 3. I'm sure I will eventually lose the Action 3 cover/door and will need a backup.
I have a DJI Action 4 camera, I will connect the BY-K2 TRS mic, will it work without any problems, thank you.
hi wayne, what kind of cable should I use for my dji osmo action 3 and dji wireless mic?
I want to use a cable to connect my dji mic to my oa3, coz i'm planning to mount it on top of the cage that i bought, but I don't know what cable to buy, I already bought a cable 3.5 mm to usb type c but it doesn't work.
I have a samsung phone s24+, and looking for a USB-c to 3.5mm DAC, any you could recommend?
I find the gain too high using an external mic, even with the camera gain set to the lowest DB in the settings. Could be the TRRS cable is was using. The other issue I have is there a way to run an external battery charging while using the external mic? Iike a USB c splitter? I tried one and it didn’t work, but maybe you had luck there
Thanks for this very useful video! Would you have any recommendation which mic I would need for the following environment: I want to record within sports cars a very native sound of the noises (especially of course engine and exhaust noises). So I assume it should be omnidirectional? But I should also be capable of handling loud noises? And "of course" I don't want to pay too much 😉
Hi, thanks for your comment! For something like your situation, I'd recommend you start with considering recording your audio in 32-bit float (as opposed to 24-bit or 16-bit). 32-bit float will give you the ability to record a normal environment and also extremely loud (or sudden or unexpectedly loud) sounds (like engine and exhaust noise).
With regards to mics, you'd likely want to prioritize one with a higher SPL (sound pressure level) to accommodate those louder sounds. While an omnidirectional pattern seems ideal, depending on how you're shooting your video in the car (camera placement) and where you are mounting your microphone, something like a stereo mic could give you some nice directional sounds.
Factoring overall cost, the new Zoom M3 MicTrak might be your best option. It is a 32-bit float recorder with a built in mic that can be switched between a mono pattern to a wide stereo recording (and comes in at $200 USD). While mine is en route, I do plan on making some videos about it after a bit of testing.
I have a "other way around" problem. I've been trying to find the solution for months now, and I cannot find the right solution. I need to connect my Rode Wireless Pro via USB-C output to my Lumix s5II TRS audio input. This way I will be able to connect two remote mics + use the TRRS port in the receiver to connect my MKE600 shotgun mic at the same time to the camera. But what Adapter/cable shoud i use in that case? Audio from USB-C to Audio I need your help in that. Thank you for your all tour contributions :)
I've been trying to connect an aviation headset to the DJI action 3. Aviation headset has plugs. I did this with a GoPro and a USB-C adapter, but when I try to use it with DJI Action 3 it doesn't work. Any help would be very much appreciated. Headset is a Bose A20. Aviation headsets have two plugs of different sizes, one of which I believe is a 1/4 inch.
I have plenty of adapters. Do you have an idea of charging your phone usb c w/ receiver zoom mic
Hi! I'd love to finally use my Rode VideoMicro but I haven't found a good quality cable to plug it either to my MacBook Pro (M2. 3.5 jack and USBc) or to my cellphone (Samsung S20 FE)... it really seems to sound all crapy with the cables I've found.
Now... you just gave me the idea of using it directly into the 3.5 jack of the Mac (well... not you, me by watching your video LOL), but... what cable should I use if I want to use the mic for video calls or recording audio while listening to audio from the computer with headphones?

Helo sir please tell me that's is a adaptor has dac does it will work with osmo action 3 or should I buy directly a type c mic 🎤
With a TRS handled STEREO sound, or will it just be mono sound?
Hi, I recently buy Comica Vimo C3 Mic, but there is problem, I cannot connect it to my Osmo 3, would you please help me, what adapter should I use?
I bought a usb-c to female 3.5mm jack for a Rode Video Micro. The adapter is generic and unfortunately, I'm unable to get any audio to record. I am sending the adapter back and I have bought the Boya BY-K4 in its place. Other than that, are there any settings in the Osmo Action 3 that need to be set to make this setup work? Thanks
Thx for the video. Just picked up an Action 4. So, the adapter and the mic cable have to be TRS yes? You can't use a TRRS adapter with a TRS mic cable because of the ADC circuitry in the adapter. But, can you use a TRS Boya adapter with a trrs mic cable? Also, I have several lav mics that are TRS, is there a way to use these with my USB-C iPad? Cheers.
Thanks for your questions! While I can't speak to ipad use, you actually can use a lav mic that has a TRRS male end. You would need (yet) another adapter like a RODE SC3 which would turn your TRRS mic into a TRS mic and then connect that to a BOYA BY-K4 adapter. Even though inexpensive USB-C headphone adapters are meant for TRRS cables, you're right in that they are not designed for TRRS mics. It's can be confusing as it seems like matching up like connectors should work, but the internal circuitry and the physical metal connections (of TRRS plugs & jacks) don't necessarily match.
I'm still confused, the boya NY-K4 has a usb-c converting it to TRRS, is it correct to plug in a TRS jack microphone?
i assume a USBC to a split headphone and mic adapter also works?
Did you also record the beginning of this video with the mke 200 and the boya adapter or is the boya adapter just the recorded end of the video?
Thanks for your comments! The majority of the audio in this video was recorded with a Lewitt LCT-440 Pure studio condenser mic, which is my everyday mic that I use for my professional work. The MKE200 was only used in the 2 segments demonstrating the difference between the two adapters.
