A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by a day alone with my agitated feelings. The Analog Four continues to floor me; I wasn't expecting much, and I have heard little buzz about it, but holy mackinaw it's a beautiful beast.
Elektron Analog Four MkII - Four analogue, subtractive synth parts (arp, bass, ghost oooh, melody)
Arturia DrumBrute Impact + Strymon Big Sky + Strymon Ola - Drums
Elektron Digitone + Zoia - Three FM synth parts (plucks 1, plucks 2, garbles)
Written and performed within a 24-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

This is fantastic! The annotated live jam has quickly become my favorite format
I love how you use a 3 bar pattern of 4/4, it's not cut time but it's so refreshing for it not to be 4x4 pounding, I've heard that spice in Alice in Chains songs, sneaking in turnarounds that catch you off guard but not to where you need a calculator to figure out where 1 is...I dig it 💥
shatteredsquare yeah that early jump into every chorus in grind is sex
Wow, that sounded really good! Reminded me a bit of NIN but a happier version (if that makes sense)
Agree. I hear that.
I hear that and can't unhear now :D
Evgueni Kalachnikov Same. Haha.
It makes me think of Only Shallow by My Bloody Valentine.
Came back to listen again and to say I really liked this!
I keep coming back to this. so good!
holy shit man this is mind blowing
Love the sounds and the use of pitch wobbles and detuning. Great melodies and harmonies, too. Well done!
The drum rolls on the Impact are insane. The verse section starting at 3:35 gets me hyped every time. Just amazing stuff!
Awesome dude - love the vibe. great sounds all around!
dude i really liked it!!!!! and the best part is that you share your thought process with those texts on the video, thanks so much
Great job! And thanks for the helpful explanations as you go. Post more!
Amazing jam. Really showed off the best each piece of gear had to offer.
Those drums go hard, this is so good
You got me at 20 seconds mark. And then every 15 seconds it was getting better and better. Thanks god you have bandcamp!
Awesome! Loved it!
Ok... that’s just AMAZING!
Great work Jay - thanks for sharing!
Absolutely worth it. Great job bro
Good stuff man! Im a fan of my a4 too! Love the way you explain as you jam.
wow! very well done. Thanks for the commentary too, made this video extra enjoyable and worth a subscribe!
i love so many of these jams
now i wanna get a drumbrute
I found this video after buying an Impact, it's a really great track, really nice work!! Inspiring!
Jay - fine, fine work! Keep 'em coming.
This was fantastic, I love how you explain what you're doing and how it changes the sound. Cheers for your videos! Love my song too :) gave me an old aphex vibe :)
Love the descriptions...Subbed. Nice work.
Exceptional, memorable. The polyrhythms (or is it polymeters?) of the various melodies really make this piece feel alive. Well done.
Wow! Just got a DBI and barely scratched the surface of its potential, so this was great to see/hear. And bonus points for saying "holy mackinaw."
Love this too. Sort of 80s, but not really retro. I got a DB Impact a few weeks ago and it's probably the single most surprising device I've bought this year. So good.
Sounds very much like mid-90s Orbital to me (and that's a complement!)
So good!
Thanks kindly! I'm a big fan of your channel.
So annoyingly good :)
Big fan of your stuff!
Very very very goooooood
Wow, you've got a nice setup with beautiful instruments. But more important it surpasses the usual boring stuff with excessive gear out there (how the hell you've got some much different gear;). I'm hearing you come from a band, composing music. In this piece love that it's repetitive but never boring. Great you added typo to share thoughts on the gear and sound, It's really inspiring and I wonder if you have a video both electronics and nonelectronics out there. I'm going to check out the rest of the songs.. Thanks! cheers Rob
Holy shit that's cool
Best song I have heard in a while!
Nice work! Love the A4
Analog 4 looking pretty appealing
great track, those snare rolls are superb
Inspiring!
Wow! Loved THAT.
Great combination of voicings and extremely tasteful melody choices. New sub right here 🔥
I’m so tempted with the DB Impact…
Good stuff. You work the Elektron like a pro ;-)
So nice
Nice signal chain. Getting an A4 soon. I really like the layers you did here.
Absolutely beautiful.
Ace music, nice to see the synergy between the gear you're using too, especially with no sampler :)
Really enjoying this a lot. :-)
very good!! Impressed!
.... Everything sound perfect, realy nice work !!
fantastic!
Very energizing one!
Nice and inspiring! Keep going
great sound !
This is some next gen mega-man boss fight dopeness.
CERTIFIED BANGER!!
Nice!
Awesome, big thumbs up! :)
So good wow.
Bruh this shit is a banger!!! Keep it coming!!
Wow, I dont think I have to tell you that was amazing based on the comments here. Loved it.
круто!!! я вспомнил ORBITAL!
that was cool..
real stuff!
Epic
“Some say his umbilical chord was an A minor, and that he once climbed the empire state building using just his teeth and a midi cable... all we know is, he’s called the JAY HOSKING!”
JAY HOSKING even...
Productions like these awards a sub after 15 sec of listening ......... 😍📀📢🖖
Genius!
god damn
gorgeous! i'm trying to love my a4mk2. i get weary of the many pages and some of the control layouts... but I should get more patience.
Whatever works for you, right? I'm typically a big fan of 1:1 controls, like the modern Moog designs, but something about the A4Mk2 really resonates with me.
Nice jam. Subbed :-)
I have something to tell you that you may not be ready to hear:
You're pretty damned good at this
hnnnnnnnnnng so excellent man.
Oh yes, welcome creativity!!
Music checker:-))
Like the lovechild of Kink and Orbital
awesome sound.... love it ! great job
So good I’m going for a second helping right off the bat :-)
Awesome, very Orbital sounding
Those chords around 2:57 get me every time.
Can a comparison be drawn on the reverb capabilities of the zoia to the big sky? If u were going to pick one, which would it be? Awesome jam btw, I loved it!
Fucking beautiful
Dude you absolutely nailed that set! Awesome track👏👏 also, killer setup by the way! I'm right now torn between getting an OTmk2 and an A4mk2 (have the DT and a few moog monosynths) any kind words of wisdom to guide me? Cheers!
If you already have a few moog monosynths, then you'll get diminishing returns from the A4mk2. That said, the A4mk2 is absolutely stellar and I've been using it nearly constantly since I got it (even in another project behind the scenes). The OTmk2 is a ton of fun and really good for mixing in a bunch of synths into an overall, cohesive sound (including performance effects, aka "scenes"); it also gives you tons of sample power, though your mileage will vary with that. If you're missing that master-level performance feeling, I'd consider the OT, but if you're looking for new sounds and new analogue workflow, the A4mk2. Best of luck, and thanks!
@@JayHosking thanks! You rock!
Really cool. loved the lead sound from 2:50 , is that from analog 4?
Sure is!
Nice job fella.
love that drumbrute roller!
Wow that was just magical✨ asap A4 mkll 😍
that was fresssssh
that was fresssssh
Jay....boy you raising the bar! Analog 4 huh....ummmm. you gonna help sell alot of gear!!!!
The way u work that drumbrute...I'm jealous
Fuck yes
so good! i always thought that the a4 and digitone were redundant, but clearly not!
nice track
Hey dude, love the jam, inspired me to finally get a A4 MK2 after having hogged it at the music center way too many times. I‘m pairing it with a Digitakt and I‘d like to widen its stereo image, did you use just the chorus on the Ola or the multi?
The A4's chorus sounds great and is all you need. (The Ola is on the drums, not the A4.) And thanks! Enjoy that A4.
Ah sorry, should have phrased this better - I meant widening the Digitakt‘s stereo image. Any other Chorus/Vibrato pedals you can recommend that are a bit cheaper than the Ola?
@@infiltratorzero I think I got my Ola used for $300 Canadian. I don't know a stereo vibrato/chorus under that price that sounds as good or close to. Sorry!
Ok, I‘ll be on the lookout for a used one. Thanks for your help, keep on doing what you‘re doing!
I'm guessing that trick to improve bass lines by using the high pass filter setting the cutoff in the low range and cranking the resonance and key tracking would work with every synth right?
Nice IDM!
I love this. Trying to get more or less daw less as well. Although I’m still checking tuning and level in ableton. Which pedals do you have. And how do you get it synced?
man i am hooked by those sounds from the analogue, so beautiful. I wonder if you know any alternative synth that can get me those kind of sounds?
The A4 has a lot of tricks up its sleeve in terms of sequencing and using the minimal voices creatively. These lead to sound decisions that are kind of unique. The oscillators and filters themselves sound fine but aren't particularly unique. It's in all the ways the A4 is used that its sound comes out, I think. As such, I'm not sure I can easily point to another synth and identify the same feeling from it. Hope this is useful, and thanks!
It kind of answers. I am in love with those bass you pull out from it though, buttery and growly at the same time. I wonder if there is a name for that kind of sound, and whethe there is a process I can follow to reproduce it. There is a guy who got something similar out of a Digitone, so it is possible @@JayHosking great stuff anyway! I always thought that the durmbrute play very nicely with it also, I think I may get one in the future :)
Do you find the 4 tracks on Analog 4 to be sufficient? Thinking of getting one, or an Octatrack, not sure. Oh, and your jam sounds great.
For myself, I don't think four voices is enough in most instances, but it's the majority of what you need (one other polyphonic voice would be enough). That said, you could get clever with the Analog Four's oscillators to add major/minor intervals. And thanks!
@@JayHosking thanks. I have a Digitakt, so that would be a few extra voices as well.
@@weepwow Yeah, I think Digitakt + Analog Four would be more than enough, and the best of all worlds!
Nic3 1n3
Hi, great sounds. Do you use the A4 presets ? Got to spend more time on my A4 to get it sound like this )) cool channel!
I’m pretty new to the A4, so most of these sounds are modified versions of presets! And thanks!
Love it! I’m looking for some creative synth and can’t decide if I should get the Analog Four or cheaper Deepmind 12, I want something that I can dig in and explore and have that analog thickness and flexibility. AF mk2 feels like a right choice just the price...
I would say it really depends on whether you'd prefer multiple voices at the same time (A4 MkII) or whether you'd prefer higher polyphony. Personally, I'd do the A4, but both are great. Best of luck!
Jay Hosking thank you, going with A4!
Nice idm)
I am a year and a half late to the party but 1:06 sounds bloody huge. Great stuff ! Perhaps a silly question but how do you enjoy the A4mkii in comparison to the Novation peak?
I like the A4MkII a lot more overall, but you're right that they're very different beasts!
@@JayHosking I am really liking the look of the Analog Four and looks like it has shined with updates over time. You make it sound really good! Might have to pick one up myself next year :)
