- A live synth performance, all on hardware, and accidentally inspired by the grandeur and rhythms of 80s fantasy-movie soundtracks. I swear it started as a sombre track!
I had to wait to record this one, because the Deluge and my previous MIDI-through box were causing ghost notes, stuck notes, and random program changes to the other hardware. Happy to say my new MIDI-through box, the Kenton MIDI Thru 5, works like a charm so far.
Synthstrom Deluge - Sequencing and drums
Moog Subsequent 37 + Strymon Big Sky - Arp
Korg Volca FM + Strymon Magneto + MI Clouds + DSI DSM02 + Eventide H9 - Melody
Dreadbox Abyss + Empress Zoia - Second melody and chords
Moog Minitaur + Meris Polymoon - Bass
Performed live and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

Totally rad!
I come back to this video a lot. Great tune.
Never ever stop!
Walking in the middle of the night during quarantine , this song comes on . Gotta apologize to the sleeping people . I couldn't help but blurt out " geeeeez !!! That effing Minotaur!!!?!?!!!" Music shivers , every single time .
I feel like i'm saying that every time i hear one of your jam but this one my god, is simply out of this world
Still my favourite performance on RUclips, don't know if it is the instruments, your obvious talent, or the Unicorns! Your gift is boundless!!
Finally going to be on an album on Bandcamp in November. Thanks so much!
This is by far my favourite track you’ve done, thanks for the great music.
There is not enough of this in the world. Great feeling!!!!!
YUP 👑
The Abyss sounds soo nice.
Man!!!!! You can put a jam together. Always top notch!
Listening again in 2022. This needs way more views.
And STILL .... in love with this track - the sounds , the evokative lyrical storytelling - Excellence Extraordinaire
☝️🦄
Fav so far mysically working backwards.....one of my fav finds was putting volca fm on arp but on one step...throught delay and reverb and wiggerling fx hehe good live fun! Awesome jam/track!!!!!
For real, you're one of my favorite live jam artists on RUclips! Really loving the originality and different gear almost every vid. Keep on making these videos man!
I still listen to this on occasion. I would loop this like crazy in my car if it was on your Spotify!
One of these days I'll put out a B sides record and this will definitely be there! I haven't otherwise been able to fit it into the mood/motif of a record, though. Thanks so much!
OMD is back🎹💯The best of8️⃣0️⃣
Really enjoy listening to this track. It really is 80's /Never Ending Story! Fantastic!! 😎👍
Ohh man that Abyss/Zoia combination is just fantastic.. but the whole track in general is just so damn lushhh. I love it man, love it!
I unliked this video for a moment, just for the pleasure of getting to like it twice! Nice work! Digging the Abyss!
I can't take enough of your videos. So lucky I discovered them.
Hey man it took me a lot, i swear it took me back to my childhood dreams.... BRILLIANT !!!!
Just found you... great tunes, and who doesn't love a unicorn, or a rhinocornoceros
Having not read the description, it was a great surprise when the 80s fantasy movie started. haha, great stuff. EDIT: HAHAHA the unicorns! Loved this, thanks!
Nice interpretation and very cool setup 🤪👌
Beautiful! Look like synthwave
Still the best..... My Dearest God In heaven, I GOTTA pull a miracle, and get my shaking hands on a Dreadbox Abyss! 😭✨
there's something special when an amaxing beat AND melody come together so beautifully.
Great job Jay..(.from France !)
Definitely noticed the Neverending story inspiration right away ;) that music was like an ear worm that lasted decades for me too.
lol, I seriously watched that movie again yesterday because of this song..
Totalmente genial yo tambien soy de finales de esa epoca y me encanta los sintetizadores! es fantastico !!
Outstanding performance! 😎👍👏👏👏
Stuck notes is such a pain in the hole, happens now and again with my roland xv5080. Great track, NES was the first film i saw in a cinema so will always be very special to me!
I'm a bit of a miser with my "likes", but this....
Well played!
Very nice composition - and now I have to go watch the Neverending Story again!
Damn this is good.....This is such a legit masterpiece ...... You move - and the times move with YOU.....Timeless, Grand, Filmick , High-Octane Heartbreaking Beautiful . . . "Hoskingianna" 😘
Definitely a Never Ending Story flavor to this haha. Love it!
This is simply great, what an amazing sound. I want to buy all of this stuff then have another life where i have the time to play with it like this! Hats off to you sir, pure genius and magic happening here!
This is incredible
Really good stuff - Very 80s - I actually grew a mullet whilst watching this. Well put together video too - subbed!
I fell in love with your piece just as you told me so! Inspired me to take some synths off the wall and plug 'em in on the desk.
I really love to hear that!
I Do believe it's TIME (all pun. Int.)to call der Zimmer! 😁✨
Epic, just... epic! Could listen to you play all day.
Recently subbed to your channel and boy it's been a pleasure! I'm new to synthesizers but I'm feeling very inspired by your music. I'm only rocking Arturia Microbrute and Mutable's Ambika right now but I feel the need for new gear every time I watch your videos ^^'
OMG I love this so much! I am a child of the 80s... this is what it is! neverending story, limahl etc etc... :) LOVE THIS! :) CHEERS!
PS been eyeing that SUB37 to add to my Prophet12... but there are problems... some of their names are Pro 3, Matriarch, Summit, and most of all, Vermona 14.... decisions! :)
PS are we saying that the epic 80s melody sound is coming from the ABYSS? ... till this moment I had no idea I needed it too... :)
Amazing! From France
man you are incredible. please keep making these forever
not even 2 minutes in - added to favourites
so right about the 80's fantasy soundtrack feel . if there was a sequel to "Legend" , this would be the opening lead-in
Jeez , keep coming back . Seems you've squeeezed the audio personification of positive movement into this jam . I think if I just mainline this , I'll have my jamspace built in no time . I got goosebumps man . I know this was just a jam for you , but honestly your songwriting skill .................whoa . keep it coming . Put out albums , if you're on bandcamp or something , I'll happily pay
found it :)
Still pulling on that unicorn, I KNOW I'll get it.. Out... one of Those days, love you're, growing production Dr. Hosking, -
need mp3 of this . I keep coming back to listen again . unless you 'just' added it , I haven't found it on your bandcamp . seriously gives me shivers every freakin time
Not on Bandcamp yet, but is part of a collection I’m getting ready to put up. Hah, wasn’t sure about including it though! Maybe I should?
I always love your jams, you've an amazing ability to capture certain moods and emotions. This one a nice joyous adventure! Not the first time I've clicked play all on your channel to soundtrack my day in work
Love to hear it. Thanks!
Amazing stuff! I really dig the '80's vibe
Thank you, this is sound of inspiration you produce there!
... while struggling to get my audio-interface right, i heard this in my headphone and i thought.. wow!!!... i hadnt heard this one sofar.. man, i love your music!!
Very beautiful! Peace Christo 🎶👽🐕🛸☮️☮️😉💀🙏❤️❤️🎃
Really good Jay,nice mix of talent and gear well used...
Absolute class, would love to see a vid how you made and sequenced this
I Love ! And the sound is so gooood !! ❤️
It's amazing man, I love it. Thank you.
This is perfect!
I think that movie scarred us all, bro
That swamp of sadness
Love it! The short notes are great too :D
Awesome, loved it and very inspiring
This is like an electronic version of a Muse band's old school song
Raising the bar for the rest of us, goddamn!
An understatement !
All of the Dreadbox synths sound lovely. I figure you can get all synths to sound the same if you dial in the same sound but then the programmers tell me you can't have just one chip.
The temporal lobe is used for creating memories long term ones are actually stored in the cortex. Just a FYI.
Hey, Russell. The temporal lobe is one of the four lobes of the cortex. While you're right that the hippocampus (of the medial temporal lobe) is likely involved in consolidation of long-term memory, the neighbouring cortical tissue, such as the entorhinal cortex or parahippocampal gyrus, has been repeatedly implicated in the storage of long-term memory. No disrespect meant; I just happen to be a neuroscience PhD in my non-synth hours!
Jay Hosking I’m merely a psychiatry registrar (trainee) so I’ll defer to you there! Good to see someone else who crosses the academia / electronic music divide.
That was awesome!
it works.. respect
This is awesome !
masterful
The Mod Duo X is feeling my envy.. I own the Empress so I don't think I will need too many pedals.. :)
This music makes me wanna fall in love.......
You are too brilliant for words.
Awesome!
Waiting for the album :)))
Punchy and lovely, nice
epicly nice
My favorite synth is the Subnicorn 37...
My deepest respect... You are the new "Jean-Michel Jarre" ;-)
AWESOME
The abyss is one that slipped through for me but I love it’s focused character! I just got a matriarch that is doing this to me as well! It’s a beautiful thing to feel that again in this regard! Very cool track yet again! I hope you will watch my movie on amazon prime “Curse of the man who sees ufos “ peace Christo ☮️💀👽🐕🐕🛸😉💀🙏❤️
This is some special shit right here. Love it.
Cosmic.
7/4 synth jam is bad ass
3:45 Hamonies! I love ham!
Fun song!
Sweet jam!
Sweet
Nice work
This is so cool. I've been looking at the Deluge to be able to sequence longer bass lines than what I can on my Digitakt. Are you happy with it?
More please!
Love this!
What an awesome mix! I just watched never ending story for millionth time too, haha. Quick question on some of the comments in a video. Why is it easy to set up 7/8 time in deluge? Does it have support for compound time signatures? It looks like a 16 step sequencer to me, similar to Digitakt..
Just like the Elektron products, you can set the number of steps, so it just takes a little math: 7 beats x 4 sixteenth notes = 28 steps per bar. So on Elektron devices, I simply set the steps to 56 (two bars of 7). On the Deluge, you can easily set the length to virtually any number (the Elektron boxes are limited to 64 max), so I just set it to some multiple of 28 (here, I think it was 28 x 8). The grid is still set to multiples of 8, of course, but setting the time signature isn't so tough. And thanks for the kind words!
@@JayHosking ah, cool, unlimited steps, thats what I was missing. Looks awesome
Great jam. Subbed :-)
What patch did you use in the FM? Geat jam!!
Im really surprised how good that volca sounds! Do you record into a mixer or multi track everything in?
Both. I user a combination mixer/audio interface. And thanks!
That Abyss tho... 🙌
right in the feels
And ....STILL......😘
How are you getting your head around the Empress Zoia? Have to admit the concept seems cool. And of course I love a good Dreadbox synth running through anything! Good piece of music too...
The Zoia gives me much the same feeling as working within Propellerhead Reason, in that basic connectivity is cool and sounds great, but it's very simple to start wiring LFOs etc. and end up with sonically unique possibilities.
@@JayHosking Well, I'm a Reason fan, so that analogy is a positive. Audio quality seems good from what I've heard. The only potential negative for me might be the workflow, but there's really only one way to see about that, and that's to use it.
ProckGnosis The wiring is dead easy, though editing and moving modules around is a little more finicky. Sound quality is good on the algorithms I’ve used (it is Empress, after all). So far, a versatile addition to a synth setup!
Still listening,- :-)
And Jesus was born, that night, in BeatLeeHam.... 🍔🍴🍓🕺🏿✨
