Fugue Machine jam with Deckard's Dream, OB-6, Novation Peak, Dreadbox Abyss, Polymoon, Big Sky

  • A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the maudlin moods of the holidays. This is something of a sequel to the last video, in that I'm using exactly the same hardware synths and have only swapped out the sequencer. My point: by simply changing how you sequence your music, you can radically change the kind of music you make. Fugue Machine's limitations (a single line of note data played in different ways by four different "tape heads") are really inspiring, and the constraints end up a major benefit to creativity.
    Alexandernaut's Fugue Machine (via iOS) - Sequencing
    Sequential/Oberheim OB-6 - Bass string thing
    Novation Peak - Arp thing
    Black Corporation Deckard's Dream + Meris Polymoon - High melody pad thing
    Dreadbox Abyss + Strymon Big Sky - Fast arp
    Written and performed within a 24-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

    This is really fantastic sounding… a standout effort/piece in an ocean of similar material I encounter from time to time that has't impressed me quite like this.
    I'm soon to be 58 and was passionate about working/writing/creating with synths using MIDI and hardware sequencers in the 80s (and a bit of the 90s). I still play mainly piano sounds/parts accompanying my own vocal, playing & singing songs from "my era". I own a ton of vintage and modern gear and enjoy it here & there (I have the OB-6 & Peak too for instance). I look at and listen to your vids and I wonder is that the kind of thing I'd be doing if I was 20 now. Probably. Anyway, really nice work… keep it up :-)

    enchanting! Unrelated to the music, I loved that subtle touch of changing the word "limiting" to "inspiring". I wasn't looking at the words when you switched it, but when the sentence left the screen, I said, wait, did he say "limiting" or "inspiring?" I must have caught a subconscious glimpse. I had to rewind and check. :-)

    Jay, re: iOS apps - are you familiar with Drambo? It's an electron style sequencer with the octatrack style scene select, plus a modular synth, AUv3 host, and sampler. It can also be an AUv3 plugin itself. So I imagine you can have Fugue Machine sending midi in to a sequence and have parameter locks and conditionals on the notes fugue is sending in. It does all sorts of stuff. I can recommend you have a play with it.

    • @JayHosking

      MIDI out of the iRig is going to the Kenton MIDI Thru, yeah.

    • @taratantara
      @taratantara 4 года назад

      Jay Hosking so you have your master mix going to the iPad in AUM (or similar?) via the iRig? where in the chain is the Kenton box connected assuming the midi out is from the iPad as well and you only have one lightning port? lightning to usb splitter?

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  4 года назад

      @@taratantara No, all audio is going in through a mixer/audio interface into a computer. The iPad is simply handling MIDI sequencing (iPad --> iRig --> Kenton MIDI Thru).

    How would you compare Fugue machine to the NDLR? Thanks again!

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  4 года назад +2

      The NDLR really rewards on-the-fly chord changes, so I like it for very improv/ambient stuff. Fugue machine creates these cyclical off-kilter compositions that can work surprisingly well with drums (there's one I did with the Vermona Perfourmer and Analog Rytm, if you'd like to check it out). Neither is better than the other, but they definitely lead to different end products (which can be inspiring). Thanks!

  • @cellardoreproductions

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  4 года назад

      MIDI goes out of iPad to iRig Pro Duo, then out of there to a MIDI thru box (the Kenton MIDI Thru), then out to each device. Best of luck!

    ... and merry Christmas. May the holidays infuse you with a bunch of good food, cheers and inspiration.

    • @JayHosking
      @JayHosking  4 года назад +2

      Thanks so much for the holiday cheer! And yeah, out of production, and yeah, I love the sounds in this skrapadelix vid (stumbled across it a while back).
      The Erebus is cool, I like its variable filter, and the newest iteration is paraphonic. But I found myself spending more time than I'd like tuning it (compare to the Abyss, which you can set to auto-tune itself, and also doesn't go out of tune as much), and there's something about the Abyss that the Erebus v3 didn't quite capture in terms of its oscillators. So yeah, I parted with the Erebus ultimately.
      If they ever make a stereo Nyx, I might try that. And the Hades, that thing is a beautiful (and admittedly simple) synth, and also out of production.
      All the best!
