I love that you're sitting in the best definition for a man-cave that I've ever seen. It appears to be a make-shift structure that you've built just for your stuff. I am both impressed and jealous, simultaneously.
I dont take it for granted! Seriously sometimes I am just amazed that Ive gotten to this point, i feel spoiled on it all, but I definitely appreciate everything it's taken to get to this point! Thanks for taking the time to listen
Both are great. Bigger fan of the P6 for versatility. The OB6 has a buzz my ears can’t not hear. Now to the important stuff. What’s the story behind the room? Is it attached to your home? Between the bare wood and the insulation it looks so comfy and cozy. Glad to see you’re enjoying it to its fullest, I’d like to have a place like that someday.
Time and time again, I come away thinking the Prophet sounds like huge royal brass fanfare and the OB6 has a rubbery sound. Kick in the Coca-Cola foamy SVBPF/notch and it's truly hypnotic.
@@RandomAnthem541 Can't go wrong with any of them. If you really want 61 keys, the Rev2 is the board; get the 16-voice, you'll be happy you did. Plus, it's the least expensive. If you have the cash, P6 or OB6 is just personal preference. They sound godly. I don't have a favorite from the three, all are so good.
That sizzle is dope on the OB-6 but at the end of the day if you’re making music with that involves vocals and drums, your going to have to LPF some of that out
@@SamuelLaflamme Yes, they do compliment each other very nicely, IMO. I love both of them. I also love my Prophet REV2 and Prophet 12. (P12 is my personal favorite out of the bunch, but I love all 4 synths)
@@infestedalien Initially the Prophet 5/10 caught my eye & I seriously considered buying one, but I just can not get over the fact that it has only a mono output. (no L/R stereo outputs) Sequential _claimed_ it was intentional, to keep the P5/10 "as real to the original as possible", yet added features the original never had. (like USB, MIDI, & the 3 different filters) When it comes to synths & gear, I'm definitely no cheapskate. I don't mind spending big money on great gear. (I dropped $9,000 on my MOOG One 16) But I don't like being taken advantage of. IMO the lack of a stereo output on a modern $3,600 (P5) to $4,300 (P10) synth is totally unacceptable & unjustifiable. It seems like a miserly penny pinching move, backed by a weak & lame excuse.😑 For that kind of money they could've & should've just included mono + L/R outputs.😒 (or had L/R outputs & a mono/stereo mode) The next synth I buy will be the Behringer UB-Xa. (if it's ever released😆) I really can't wait to buy one! PS: If you do get a P5/10 I truly hope you love it & it meets all of your expectations. 😊
As an OB6 owner, I do not feel like I'm missing out on the Prophet 6. It does everything I need it to along with the happy surprises while playing it. Choose whatever you want first.
Seems like the competition is taking place on a OB-6 territory. All presented sounds are those brassy pads. I guess that Prophet may shine on some other territories.
i think the op6 has a bit more grunt, but the pro 6 does have a bit more fizz and would suit leads more. tbh deciding between the both could bake your brains..
@@gjc82071 ah yes then that is one I want to get along with moog and roland the three sounds that defined the new wave era of music and many great movie soundtracks as well
@@GuitarsAndSynths Please keep in mind that I said "IMO"/In My Opinion. I always feel nervous when I answer a question like the one you asked. I feel like if I influence your purchasing decision & you're not happy, it will be my fault. 😬 I have the OB-6, Prophet 6, 12, & REV-2. They are all great synths & any one of them would be good for 80s new wave music. It's just that if I had to choose between the Prophet-6 or OB-6, for 80s new wave music, I'd choose the OB-6. (but again, that is just my personal opinion)
Like your other comparison video on these two, really enjoyable. I think I've watched every OB6 & Prophet 6 video at this stage! Two beautiful synths. Every time I think I've finally made a decision on the OB6, my sensibility tells me to go with the P6. I own a Sub37, so this will be the Poly purchase to accompany it. I love the OB6 sound but I'm still not quite sure whether it can be THAT all round Poly..Can it sound soft and without that top end sizzle I hear so much in all the RUclips Videos?
MUVMNT it can definitely play a little more incognito but in my experience the Prophet is definitely the more versatile if you are looking for that all around vintage synth vibe. The OB is very OB and just begs to be set freeeeee
I know.....It's just beautiful! The only thing stopping me getting the P6.......is the OB6! For 2 synths so similar in architecture, they have just enough to own their own sound. Enjoy them both man!!
Melena Santorum I’m actually in agreement with you on this, yes! The filter on the P6 does not excite me one bit I have to say and it would be one of the main reasons for leaning more towards that OB6 SEM filter, which like you say, is that distinctive quality filter you want to see on such a pricey piece of equipment. I’ve got to go with my gut instinct on this and the OB6 just wins out every time! I’m sure you weren’t disappointed with your decision !
What about string sounds, leads, warm square pads, analog bells...? What about modulation routings, white noise, sample and hold and everything else that is to love about analog synthesis? This was a demo of a brass patch with variations, period. Not surprising at all that the Oberheim would stand out.
Thanks a lot, the OB6 filter is the just a thing of magic. Totally worth it especially if you need something with a big of character rather than a bread and butter soundest more like the prophet
ok, I need your help. My choise is between the Prophet 6 or the Jupiter X. They are not really comparable. I have a Peak, a Hydrasynth Deluxe and a Micromonsta2. And at first I wanted the Jupiter X really bad, but now I am doubting if I want the Prophet 6... your thoughts please?
Thanks for the thorough run down. Much appreciated. May I ask, which synth you feel is more suited for dark, smooth, heavy sounds? I get the impression it would be the Prophet 6 due to the four pole filter. But few videos feature these types of sounds.
I just put out a video playing the Rev2, the prophet 6 has a nice sound but the rev2 is much more flexible in terms of sound design, and I think it sounds very good. In a mix you would barely hear the difference.
@Jim009911 I won't deny the sound is different, both are very good in their own way. But though I'd really love to have a Prophet 6 (more than an OB-6, honestly) because of the idea, the sound, and the look of it, I really believe you can get such good sounds in a VST (Repro 5 for example), or many physical synths, that I can't quite see myself justifying the expense of a Prophet 6 though it is by all means a fantastical instrument and I'd really love to own one. I've yet to see a synth with such an intuitive mod matrix as the Rev2 though, and I don't really get how people can argue that it sounds bad, merely quite different indeed, and that's the beauty of it, it all depends on what you want !
@Jim009911 Watch that comparison between the original prophet 5 and the repro 5 ! not that far honestly, on a blind test you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.
Nice comparison. I was just saying on video from another owner of the two that I would love to see a comparison video. Yes the answer is to have both ideally
I kinda just screw around on this vid but it does get a good idea of the differences. I'm always amazed at how difference they sound despite being so similar in almost every way
Best way to do it. Most of us mess about with our synths when creating patches and stumble upon happy mistakes. You are being a lot more precise in what you are doing here and giving us a proper comparison. Prophet-6 is your favorite no doubt. OB-6 is radical and powerful though. Thanks for doing this
Are analog synths capable of much more than just gritty/brassy type sounds? Because iv'e never seen a demo video where someone plays any sounds besides those.
You could download a VST mimicking a classic (like The Legend is a great Moog Model D clone) and checking through the presets. It indeed can get very boring when guys play funk riffs on and on to show off the capabilities if you're trying to understand a synth from a sound design point of view. So if you're coming from that angle, go check a synth like The Legend or Monark, and run through the presets to get an idea.
@@spaaske but if there is an analog synth that can do much more than what I mentioned, i would prefer that over a VST. VST's are acceptable, but i would prefer the real thing. I recorded over 50 tracks that all had software sounds. I would like to get my hands the real thing. But I have to see what they can do besides what has been demonstrated in these videos.
@@mededmoon6265 I'm giving you an answer to see what an analogue synth is capable of, in terms of sound design. I'm not saying you should use it in your productions.
@@mededmoon6265 You should have a look at the Moog Grandmother (Mono) or Matriarch (if you are more into paraphony) Those are a truly magic never ending semimodular hands on surpriseshow of creating sound and sphere. The clue: it comes with the possibility to combine it with eurorack modulars. So my answer is YES THERE IS true analogue synths that never (or lets say barely) could be replaced by VSTs. I've got a Gran'ma and I purely love it
Yeah, the new Prophet 5 Rev 4 is your answer. That synth is like an alien that can morph into anything it wants. Truly almost unlimited possibilities if you know how to edit and/or create sounds on an analogue synth. It can be brassy and punch, searing leads with many different types of articulation can be made, you can create very mellow pads either brass or string bass, and you can create incredible low end bass sounds. About the only stuff you don't get are onboard effects, and an arpeggiator/sequencer, but there are more modern synths that are good at that stuff.
I admittedly had a moment with you at the end of that video, as though you were bantering with me like an old friend. "Which one?" How could I not whisper, "OB-6," in my head? Thanks for that! Now the question is keyboard or module? Thoughts?
@@miulalabyrinth9600 sorry this is a year late but for anyone else this might help, I can try to answer in a simple way. The OB6 is only 2 pole filter so it's more difficult to get tighter sounds you'd want for bass or lead, and stabs for instance. Another thing about this is that the OB-6 doesn't have a self-oscillating filter. This means you aren't able to easily program certain sounds that you would on a 4 pole filter like the one on P6. P6 has a triangle wave on both oscillators but OB6 only has a triangle on osc 2. Lastly, you'll get a different bottom end cause of the sub osc Tuna was demonstrating which you can listen for yourself and see which one you like. That being said, the OB-6 does shine with having its multi mode filter and super easy bandpass
Got the P6 when it first came out and then regretted a year later when the OB6 launched (as I can't afford to have both). But 3 years on and I'm still with my P6 and loving it.
Very nice comparison video! I want both. But I guess I'll pretend my tempest is a lightweight prophet for a while, and go for the ubxa when they release it.
Tundrah Sounds thanks buddy! I love the Tempest’s poly synth features. It can make some excellent Prophet-esque sounds! The new Behringer stuff looks unbelievable if they can make it happen the way I’m hoping
Interesting. I could not ever get the OB6 to work in the same personal headspace as my OBXa. Not at all. Maybe its strange then that I prefer the Prophet 6 to the OB6 as an Oberheim lover. I'm lucky to have the OBXa, but I'd definitely want the Prophet given the choice between the 2 DSIs ... not because I have the OBXa already, but simply because I think the Prophet sounds the better of the two. The OB6 doesn't do it for me, but we're all different with different "sounds in our head". Just my 2P. I'm looking for a T 8 :)
D r Jezz my buddy has a T8 and I wish I could steal it from him. I think the OB6 is maybe a little more akin to the OB-X than the Xa. Or maybe more like the Two Voice than either. I’ve only spend a very little time with the latter but it’s the filter that it shares (in some form) with those synths that does it. I always say if there was one synth I had to keep forever it was the Prophet-6... it is a much better all-around synth compared to the OB.... but nothing sounds as big and bad as the OB6
Hey Mr. Tuna - great to hear back from you - I've enjoyed your posts for a while now - sincere props to your channel - truly useful work for the rest of us! :). Agree on the P06. I was really lucky with the OBXa because here in the UK they are less common. I waited years for the right one and I'm lucky enough to have got a mint example with its original manual - it wasn't easy, and as I say, I tried long and hard, but in the end every time I tried an OB6 I ended up saying "where's THAT sound". I'm not convinced that for subtle pads it sas good as everyone says, but for power pads, sync. and those 2 (at least) iconic patches that everyone loads up ... it's the only one that works for the sound in my own head. I've been looking for decades in both hard and software. Props again, and I'll keep following your channel - really great studio you have there - I'm jealous :)))
D r Jezz The OB-6 is directly made from Tom Oberheim's designs. The only sonic difference is that the OB6 uses discrete circuitry, while the OB-Xa had Curtis chips. If you like that Curtis sound, the REV2 is actually more what you're looking for.
great comparison video! how do these sounds through HEADPHONES? i have limited space and can't make too much noise. is it complete nonsense to get one of these only to play them through headphones? might as well go digital? or running things through a sound interface would help? sorry if silly questions, noob here

@@blkbird Thanks for the reply, my question was mainly due to my background as guitarist where things usually sound not that good in headphones :) ended up getting an OB6 and I'm very pleased with it. Cheers!

I want to purchase one of these two for my first synth. I'm leaning toward the OB-6. It sounds a bit fuller, thicker, with those high end freuqencies coming in so nicely. But everybody is telling me to go with the Prophet-6 - which I believe to be a bit more mellow, soulful, and more maybe more practical. MR TUNA Music, if you had to let one go, which would it be?
Why didn't they make a 61/76/88 key version? Save yourself $1,100 and get the desktop OB-6 and use a controller with at least 61 keys. P6 sounds great here too but if was going Prophet I'd go with the Prophet 10 for incredible sound or X for stereo awesome sauce. Moog Matriarch, Moog Grandmother, and ASM Hydrasynth are still slightly slept on too.
So if you would please sir. I just received my new moog sub 37 today and went through the presets ect. Best purchase in my life so far I already own ni machine and I'm becoming a synth head. Long story short with all your instruments and playing what do you think would compliment the moog best I've been eyeballing the OB 6 the rev 12 got any suggestions. I Would really appreciate any input. Thanks!
Initially I was obsessed with the ob6 just to have the oberheim sound then the prophets good looks caught my eye. This is drawing me back to oberheim 🤦🏻
Thorsten have you played one yet? You might change your mind. The sound is indescribable, and the filter is what makes it. The SEM derived sound is something very different from the matrix machines

The patches you’ve created definitely make the OB6 sound better. For pluck town and bass land I prefer the P6
I'd gladly take whichever one you want to gift to me.
@@MRTUNA well, life is full of all sorts of trials, but it's rewards like this that make it all worth it.

The Prophet 6 sounds amazing, but the OB-6 gets my vote. Gonna buy it soon.
Did ya get it yet?
@@cybernitemusic Yes. I bought the OB-6, but then I bought the Prophet 6 about 8 months later. 🙂
@@peterengdahl4087 which one do u prefer?
@@ChazSeamus28 well, the Prophet 6 is an amazing sounding synth, but the OB-6 is still my favourite out of those two.
My favorite comparison video of these two and I think I’ve seen them all.
Both are great. Sound pretty interchangeable if you ask me.
I still laugh at "the subwoofer" :) Great video and sweet chords!
I ordered both! Mr Tuna
Awesome! You're the reason I'm even shopping for an Ob6 because of something posted on instagram and here you are.
Well, I solved my dilemma by purchasing both, and a Rev2 as well, lol! Glad I have a good job.
Dang, I am trying to decide between all three (among others). A month later, any thoughts?
@@RandomAnthem541 Can't go wrong with any of them. If you really want 61 keys, the Rev2 is the board; get the 16-voice, you'll be happy you did. Plus, it's the least expensive. If you have the cash, P6 or OB6 is just personal preference. They sound godly. I don't have a favorite from the three, all are so good.

Both are pretty fizzy. Love em!
The OB-6 along with things like the Matriarch will go down in history as one of the greatest synths ever.
Listening to both synth is a wonderful trip.
Man, I am jealous of your studio space. My studio is literally in a studio apartment!
I like 'em both. Can't afford either right now though. Maybe in the near future. Thanks for this video!
That sizzle is dope on the OB-6 but at the end of the day if you’re making music with that involves vocals and drums, your going to have to LPF some of that out
Great comparison. Both are great units. Cheers! Be well. :)
Great informative video thanks 🙏🏻
lovely sounds from these machines
In my opinion they are two synthesizer different enough from eachother. It's impossible to just like one of them so I bought both of them.
Me, too. (bought both) 😁 Have you tried MIDI layering them, yet? They sound so awesome, when layered. 🥰 🎵 🎶
@@gjc82071 They complement each other! This demo seems more oriented for what OB-6 does the best! Love both of them though!
@@SamuelLaflamme Yes, they do compliment each other very nicely, IMO. I love both of them. I also love my Prophet REV2 and Prophet 12. (P12 is my personal favorite out of the bunch, but I love all 4 synths)
@@gjc82071 Good idea! Have not tried it yet! :) An update now 3 years later. I still got booth and love them! Saving up for Prophet 5 or 10.
Man...I'd honestly take any. But that "low growl" the prophet has....perfection!
As an OB6 owner, I do not feel like I'm missing out on the Prophet 6. It does everything I need it to along with the happy surprises while playing it. Choose whatever you want first.
can the OB6 also sound warm? I mean something like forever young
Absolutely infact i was playing that on my ob6 as i saw this comment, i think it reminds me also a little bit of the jupiter 8 in some respects
Seems like the competition is taking place on a OB-6 territory. All presented sounds are those brassy pads. I guess that Prophet may shine on some other territories.
Great point! Try a kick drum with an OB-6! Love both of them though!
i think the op6 has a bit more grunt, but the pro 6 does have a bit more fizz and would suit leads more. tbh deciding between the both could bake your brains..
I think the OB has the fizz, but otherwise, yes 😵💫. Tough choice

Probably the OB6, IMO.

Hi Mr Tuna.
Have you got an email for business inquiries?
What about you doing your own video?
Anyone live in or near Seattle and want to trade their OB-6 for a Prophet-6? The P6 tone is so sweet. I just want something different now
I wonder how the OB-6 vs. The REV-2 sounds.
Great demo! I'm still trying to decide between the two but that OB6 filter is something else! I think you may have swayed my decision, thanks man!
Just curious if you’ve ever played a rev2 and had thoughts on a comparison between that and the Prophet 6
@@jeremyn.4753 can you make the rev2-8 sound as much dark as the p6? Cause in all demos it sounds too thin in my ears
"it's the same, but different!"
Thanks for doing this
These sound great - what kind of sound system do I get to sound like this live?
Ob6 has different chips a couple more effects and they have to pay Tom. I like both but the ob6 has more going on in my opinion
Richard Walley agreed!
A subsequent update means that the P6 now has all the same effects as the OB-6 (including that third phaser).
I admittedly had a moment with you at the end of that video, as though you were bantering with me like an old friend. "Which one?"
How could I not whisper, "OB-6," in my head?
Thanks for that! Now the question is keyboard or module? Thoughts?
"ough, that's what you're paying for" LOL
I had both. After about year of playing them I concluded I did not need both. Ended up selling the P6. I think the OB-6 it is the best of the two.
austin styles ..yes
Thanks for doing this!
I thought it would help me choose one of the other....
OB6 is more inspiring, but the P6 seems more versatile.
How is it more versatile? Any insight or link to good info about their specs and how they differ in functionality and layout.
OB6
Very nice comparison video! I want both. But I guess I'll pretend my tempest is a lightweight prophet for a while, and go for the ubxa when they release it.
Tundrah Sounds thanks buddy! I love the Tempest’s poly synth features. It can make some excellent Prophet-esque sounds! The new Behringer stuff looks unbelievable if they can make it happen the way I’m hoping
Behringer stuff is very hit or miss. Wait & see!
OB6 has that magic! It sounds big and aggressive
D r Jezz I would kill for an OB-Xa though!
@@MRTUNA PS I'm also a MONO/POLY lover/owner - such an unbeatable machine :)
D r Jezz The OB-6 is directly made from Tom Oberheim's designs. The only sonic difference is that the OB6 uses discrete circuitry, while the OB-Xa had Curtis chips. If you like that Curtis sound, the REV2 is actually more what you're looking for.
If you had to choose one, which one? im sorta learning towards at OB-6.
"My newt differences" at 6:07. "Men-it differences" would be a timing issue rather than size.

@@MRTUNA i realized that as i watched more of the video but at first it looked like they were combined to form some weird synth.
And after listening through this, it has narrowed my decision down to the OB-6.
Wow!
The OB6 is more nuanced and sophisticated to my ears.
The Oberheims always had a "mystique" to them, and the OB6 is no exception to that rule.
Thanks for such a good comparison.💜
I prefer my OB-6 to my Prophet 6, but that's not to say I dislike the Prophet. Both are wonderful synths. IMO they sound really when when MIDI layered. They compliment each other quite well. I hope you'll check out my little P6+OB6 demo.

Both great. Too similar to be complementary though.
Finding this now and wondering if the OBX8 can really do both or if the OB6 can do more since it has a fully Poly Mod section and suboscillator.

This is drawing me back to oberheim 🤦🏻
The OB6 has no self oscillating filters. I cant understand why. So a no buy for me. Gonna stay with my Matrix1000 and Programmer.
Thorsten have you played one yet? You might change your mind. The sound is indescribable, and the filter is what makes it. The SEM derived sound is something very different from the matrix machines
I LOVE the matrix 1000 though!!
