Technically the OB-X8 is also manufactured by Sequential. The difference is the OB-6 is a Dave Smith Prophet 6 with Tom Oberheim contributions done as a collab, and the OB-X8 is all Oberheim but contracting with Sequential for manufacturing.
It's an Oberheim-flavoured Prophet 6, yes. Very similar under the hood, apart from the filter. The 'Prophety-ness' sometimes seeps in, but that also makes it more versatile.
Great demonstration of some of this synth's capabilities! (And thank you for covering the Unison specific features! A lot of people don't know you can change the unison voice count on the OB-6.) Regarding the heritage of this synth however: The OB-6 voice cards were designed by Tom Oberheim himself, based off the original SEM design. I can't speak for what changes he made for the OB-6 specifically, but I imagine most of the modifications to the design were to fit the PCB size limitations, the added VCO waveforms, component availability, and improve tuning stability. There's no reasonable way to access the trim-pots on those cards, of course. Dave Smith and his team largely designed the rest of the synth from what I understand. (The hardware for it has direct lineage from the Prophet-6 after all) Take a look at pictures of the OB-6 voice cards sometime; if you squint, there's some vague resemblance to the Tom Oberheim Two Voice Synth Pro voice PCB. The Prophet-6 voice cards look completely different, and use very different circuit paths and components. The only similarity is the PCB form-factor. As much as it, and the OB-X8, are collaborative projects; they are absolutely 100% Oberheims. (I doubt they would have listed the OB-6 on the official Oberheim site otherwise.) But at the end of the day, Oberheim and Sequential are both owned by Focusrite so... :P
Wow all that tweaking brings some really nice presets. You make the OB-6 just like a fish living in the ocean instead of a stream! You should concentrate, do some nice banks with presets like these and sell them to me and everyone 😊 Also would love your tutorials how to start from scratch in patch building. Keep it up man!
From 2015-2018 it was known as the DSI OB6 (Dave Smith Instruments). Even more confusingly, now that Dave Smith is gone, Tom Oberheim is still involved with Sequential, which manufactures both the Sequential and Oberheim product lines.
Hi, thank you very much for sharing your skills on the OB6. Very nice sounds and your gr9 use of the crossmod and filter in combination was very inspiring.
I‘d say, it‘s a Sequential synth with Oberheim oscillators, filters, and blue stripes - but not a Sequential Circuits synth; SC was Dave Smith‘s company until the mid-80s. Anyway, one of the finest analog poly synths on the market.
Mr. Tuna! Where have you been? Love your Jam sessions and videos. The end result of this tweaking is some serious OB patches. You should consider creating some patch banks for the OB6 & sell them. That purchase would be a no brainer for me. Nice work! Save when you go "Oooh!". Patch done. Next one....
Thanks my friend! Ill tell you I have been out enjoying the most beautiful summer of my life. the sun was so nice and I was getting out and camping lots and just being outside as much as possible. I think you will be seeing a lot more of me now that summer is ending and I'm gonna have some more time inside--- I really have been thinking a lot about patches and creating some banks so iI might try to make that work a little more now that I know there's some interest!
Thanks for the overview/patch creation on the OB6, much appreciated! This or the OBX8 (probably module) are on my radar, continuing to get more insights on both to determine preferred priority.
I would loooove to play an OBX8 I havent even seen one in person yet! Right now I'm totally out of space for synths but it's been long overdue for a bit of a shake up in the studio these days
Confused by the pitch change that occurs @23:39 when you put VCO 2 in Low Freq mode.. I had the same reaction when you said "that's weird". Seems like a bug... X-Mod wasn't affecting VCO 1..
OB6 does nearly everything the P6 can do, given they're very similar under the hood. OBX8 has no effects, is a chunky beast, and has some weird limitations given the price - wonderful sound though.
I don’t like those sounds but that’s just me I’m sure it’s amazing to a lot of people I just like the Moog 37 better , that dirt fizz isn’t for me, but I’m sure there’s things I don’t undert
To each his own right? I do like the fizz when the filter of the ob6 is open. It’s fizzy but in a beautiful soft way. Whereas all other synths I have tried get harsh. I really want a 37 to compliment it though. More rounder, but a great combo. It’s a combo a lot of people have actually.
It's not just about how great this synth is. It's about how beautifully you play it.

@@AynsleyGreen way way way too much “for-profit “flavor and far far far too little Oberheim in the OB-6. OB-X8 for the win every time, hands-down!!
@@inkling1788 Very expensive + no effects + heavy and large = Not a practical synth to take on the road
Great vid of this gorgeous synth, what a vibe, just beautiful....still to this day, my fav. synth.

This synth is the synth!
This is was a beautiful HDR video but apparently RUclips doesnt do that, so enjoy the sweet overexposed sounds
Awesome!! 🎹

007 Patch Broken EP maybe the nicest patch ever... and I dont have an OB-6 (got a REV2 and a Ti2 Virus) !
Wonderful!!!🔥
Excellent

Wow sounds so good. Boutique synth.

Truly! definitely better put than me

update.. I just realized it's because sync was enabled, VCO 1 was getting its pitch from VCO 2.
Awesome
Great instructive demo, thanks! I'll bet people would pay handsomely for your patch collections. Do you have any for sale for the OB-6?
Great video , dude your voice sounds very like James Hetfield from Metallica !
What would be the deciding factor to purchase between OB6, Prophet 6 and OBX8? Great video,

Avoiding using resonance on notch, you get a nicer prominent cut. You're boosting the cut
Oberheim Ob-8 made by sequential too
That video's really bright to watch, possibly due to the HDR
its really frustrating that it does that! I had success with some other videos, but the HDR gets wrecked here

Moog 37 does not sit well in the mix way too harsh
Thanks for letting me know
