Great video ! I own an OB6. I would like to say the keys themselves are very good too. My main complaint is the 4 octaves ... I usually miss an extra octave. Today, it is my go-to synth and it remains one of the most pleasing keyboards to play with. I am very glad that Dave and Tom made this wonderful collaboration.
Beautifully made video of two amazing synths. I own a Prophet 6 and used to own an OB-6. I agree, the P6 seems have no issue fitting into mixes with multiple tracks/synths. It gets along with my Prophet 5 perfectly. To be honest, you can’t go wrong with either the OB-6 or the Prophet 6. If you own either one, you’re winning.
Gosh, that Oberheim, tho. I feel like we haven't talked about the Take 5 vs Prophet 5 idea as much as these two being pitted against one another, but I'm also curious about the value proposition right now. That said, the OB6 seems like the flagship big beautiful baby of the gang, more an instrument to multi-track for your all electronics project than the Prophet, which will let you fill space with a live band. Can't argue with that beautiful filter, tho.
I have neither but own the Xpander and I'd say the description about being a show stealer is spot on for the Xpander as well. It doesn't fit but sound amazing. Was thinking about replacing it with a prpphet
Excellent video my man!! I think that the p6s interest has dwarfed because of the prophet 5 rev 4 (which I just ordered and can’t wait to use!). I think that the ob-6 is super popular and desired because of the lack of modern Oberheim on the market. I personally like both of these synths but the one thing on the ob-6 that I find lacking is the fact that you don’t have a 4 pole filter option. Don’t get me wrong the sem state variable filter that the ob-6 is based off of is a classic piece of audio engineering but it it’s not a Swiss Army knife like the p6 filter at all. Too many high frequencies pass through which makes it hard to make basses and plucks.
Thats a good thing im my opinion more power to the P6 owners . Both sit in their own sonic lane an cross-over a little . As N.E.V.B says the P6 covers so much ground.
Based on your frequency and resonance comparisons, the strings/pad sounds on the Prophet 6 has fizzy harmonics. It sounds like skimming off of the treble end of the sawtooth oscillators and using it as a lead sound, or that the fizzy harmonics can definitely be used for interesting soundscapes, such as industrial or scifi soundtracks. The Prophet 6 patch you demonstrated can even be more interesting if you use white noise with it. The OB-6 has a pronounced deep end and the filter response is very mellow. Perhaps it's based more on sine waves because I didn't hear any sharp harmonics like the Prophet 6. It's more ambient. But the sounds on both synths depend on the patch you select and edit. These two are great instruments and the preferences are up to the individual. I like the Oberheim slightly more, but wouldn't mind having both.
@@tutorial4779 neither are thin of course (I have both lol) but you can tell thje distinctive differences in that vid. The OB6 si brighter and fizzier, the P is darker and smoother BUT thats a generalised comment. The P6 can sound bright (but not fizzy) and the OB can be dark (but not so smooth).
Great video! Both are incredible synths. To me if you can have both that's where it is. If you can only get one I'd probably go OB6 because of its oozing character which I believe informs my need to get hardware synths more these days in a plugin mostly session world. Maybe clients would only use one or two sounds per song from the OB6, but those sounds even in raw form have that mojo straight away. Really you can't go wrong either way. I even like the Rev2 actually.

I love my OB-6, and I also love, generally speaking, the Prophet sound. But I have a Rev2 which, using VCM, *can* sound pretty much like a Prophet, albeit not quite like a P5/P6/10. Additionally I use Repro-5 in case a P5 sound is absolutely required. So I think I don‘t need the P6. If the OB-6 had an optional 4-pole LPF like the Xa, it would be the perfect synth.
the reason why i like the ob6 way more than the prophet, is because the ob6 sounds likea spaceship and the p6 sounds like a airplane... the ob6 is perfect for my dub techno tracks 😊
i do admit that the OB6 sounds much more alive, but the Prophet 6's smoothness, warmth and clean sound with a nostalgic feel and that slightly vintage imperfection that distorts it ever so slightly, really gives a feel i wouldnt say you can find on any other synth in the league. by no means are my words law, but in my ears, the prophet 6 has a feel that i wouldnt be able to feel in other ways with other synths
that preset 007 on the ob-6 is such a staple lol I own both, I was initially intending to keep only one but could not manage. P6 gets quite a lot of hate overall I the synth community and OB-6 is highly praised. I think they serve different purposes, the OB-6 is too recognisable and full of squelchy character when played on it's own, whilst the P6 seems much smoother and creamier that fits well in every track which makes it a winner imho so I agree with your final conclusion! thanks for this video, it's THE hot question in the synth community.
The P6 seems like the better way to go for people gigging with a band. It's a little subtler, and seems like you can let is sit in the background of a mix without it screaming "look at me! I'm a synthesizer". The OB6 sounds more like a synthesizer than most other synthesizers, and if you need that rich character then its probably the better choice for you. ? They both sound great, are both extraordinarily expensive, and both a joy to play.
The prophet 6 is my all time favorite synthesizer I've owned so I thought the OB-6 would be even better. However when I got it, I was so disappointed. It did not behave in any of the ways I wanted it to. The demos sound great so it must have been user error.
I bought both modules. I have always loved the sound of the OB-6 because it is so juicy and it takes me back to my childhood when the originals were out. Love that sound. The P6 fits better in most places.
Nice history…very cool of Yamaha and Roland. Cool how Dave A Tom got to together. Btw never max out your card unless you can pay it off the same month unless it’s is a dire emergency. (that’s a message for the Kids) I make all my unwise purchases with debit card and only if I have 10k left in emergency fund. Last examples….iPad pro m4/iphone15 pro max at Apple Store impulse…3K headphones and dac/amp…I said no to ob8 but may pull trigger on teo 5.
I also bought my prophet6 on my credit card as it was being sold for a great price, might take me three months to pay it off but my god was it worth it - this will be with me for life
Prophet 6 for me every time (I also own an OB6 module). But now also Prophet 5 Rev4 which is less versatile than the 6 but the tone is unbelievable. The OB6 is the one everyone prefers, but for me, it has some harshness in the highs/mid highs that are not always wanted so I end up having to sculp them out, which defeats the purpose of the original tone of a synth. I used the OB6 a lot for my ambient and more experimental projects, but for daily usage, 100% Prophet.
I have to agree. When I need a sound I reach for the P6 and more times than not I get what I want, weather it be strings, or basses of weird percussive sounds.
You can always make a gritty sound (OB6) milder, on the mixing board, but it's very difficult to give a mellow sounding synth (P6) authentic grit, WHEN it's needed. I go with the OB-6. Thanks very much for the comparison. 🙏
I bought a TAKE5 instead of Prophet6, seems like they are similar😂So I choosed a more affordable option. OB-6 and Prophet-6 are both way too much for me.
Synth A sounds like the Pro6 and synth B sounds like the OB6. The OB6 seems to my ears to have a stronger noisier resonance on the lowpass filter (which I like). That sounded like it was coming through on synth B.
Finally got around to watching this. For me neither one given the price(s). A P10 desktop plus a Hydrasynth Deluxe is a couple hundred bucks more than an OB-X8 and $800 more than a P10 w/keybed which has no Poly AT.
The blind test is the perfect example of the differences between the two, especially because the first example is so clearly the Prophet and the second is the OB-6. The OB-6 is just so gritty and if that's what you want it gets you there. Currently I only own the OB-6, but the Prophet 6 I think is the winner overall.
@ghost mall ... well for me the oberheim filter reminds me of that smouldering sound of bees in a jar ...a thousands wings buzzing away randomly ...prophet cant do it.
Thank for the demo. Very helpful! But "synth prices are out of control"??? I'm one of the original Prophet People on the Sequential Circuits poster. My Prophet 5 Rev. 2 cost over $4000. I probably made that back in the first month playing sessions. I think costs of the new analog synths are eminently reasonably.
Yeah it`s all relative to the quality and use. I don`t make any money from music anymore but I understand that quality costs and there are plenty of cheap options out there that are decent too for folks which didn`t really exist years ago as an option. Having said that after some time I did trump up for a Rev2, Nord Electro 6D 73 and an OB 6 desktop to add to my collection just cos I wanted them that much and found the money to spend on `em .......... and they were worth it .......... and will always hold a decent value as well
I respect the passion you must have had to max out credit cards to get the synth. But unless you needed it to perform on stage with, were plugins not good enough?
I recently upgraded my Prophet Rev 2 to 16 voices and bought an OB6 desktop, when u stack some sounds from them together u get achieve something tuely epic !
@@rohaxfx001 Yeah it took me a couple of years until I could justify spending on the upgrade but in the end it is worth it because duel layer/bi-timbral patches now become more useable and 16 over 8 voices overall will eliminate voice stealing that happens when you have a long release rate on even a regular patch. Now I have a synth that has no limits anymore and so I`m happy with that in the end
The first in the ob6, the second p6... I know that filter anywhere.. liked you the p6 is my baby.. I can't wait tell the obx comes out just so all the ob6 is better talk will softly quit.. not that I think the p5 is better then p6, but they are different.. ob6 needs the obx to restore order in the force..lol.
came here to decide which of both (desktop) versions i am going to buy. For me its the P6. Thought about buying the keys version but i really like my Korg D1 for playing so i am gonna go with the desktop.
It is just as you concluded. For me though I will just go with OB-6. I trust OB-6 can be worked around to fit in sound layers with EQs and FXs. But the Prophet can not solo as well as OB-6. Certainly though if you have the money, get both.
I love my Prophet 6. Usable good sounds. The only thing I really don't like is the ugly to big Prophet -6 logo on the right. Makes the machine so ugly. Afraid to damage the machine when I want to get rid of it.
I've always liked the prophet 6, one of my top sequential circuits instrument. I've never owned one, eventually in my collectors interest will own a Dave Smith synth one of these days. To be honest I was never really into Oberheim, but I also haven't really looked into the modern classics. It might just be a preference thing, and my likes to dislikes of the sound of it, and maybe not enough demos to my liking.
I've one Dave Smith synth. An evolver mono keyboard. It's absolutely awesome but I've got to be honest I barely use it. Has midi sync problems (arp/sequencer just drift) but it's sound is just awesome. Will never sell as i regret all the synths ive ever sold (apart from korg monologue)
@@MichaelDowComposer those early modern Dave Smith's. I was on the fence of the tetra 4 or something, but I decided against. Plenty of those ones probably have much programmable options. I was looking into the revs or that wave table one just to do collect something different of the line up.
Both sound great but from the demos, the OB-6 Sounds bit thin to me. I don't get its appeal and prefer the sound of OB-X8 over OB6. Its P6 for me all the way. It seems to be alive and feels like it has a heartbeat and I can't explain why, Gives me goosebumps.
Two great synths - I have both (with a Pro 3 to go with them). If I HAD to choose one to keep - Id keep the OB. its just more me is all. As for the clips - clip A is the P6, clip B the OB6. A couple of things give it away... First the resonance of the OBs filter - and secondly the clicky snap to the Prophets amp envelope.
Literally checking Zzounds right now, and they don't offer the Pay as you Play plans on any of the Sequential stuff right now lol. They did a while ago(that's how I got my P6) but not currently.
Daaaaaaaaamn, that sucks. I thought you could on everything. There’s literally NO WAY I can afford gear without payment plans…that’s lame af, it it’s probably a Sequential thing instead of Zzounds.
@@NoirEtBlancVie it's totally a Sequential thing, Zzounds is awesome. I've used them for almost all of my gear! Your video made me want an OB 6 or Prophet 5(I already have the 6) and was looking to see what the 12 month plan would be. Turns out it's not available outside of Affirm financing 😂
@@pjlabarge oh HELLLLL no, never Affirm…god nooooooooo 😩 That’s like a fate worse than death. Totally sucks. I’ve been looking at some rack gear, but I think I’ll have to wait. Prophet 5 is a monster, I heard J3PO’s video on the Prophet 5 vs 6, it’s the best semi-no talking comparison video I’ve ever seen. Made me think about the prophet 5 very seriously!
@@NoirEtBlancVie J3PO is a monster player. Anybody that gets to play with Marcus Miller is a beeeeast. Probably next gear purchase is a Moog Subsequent 37 since the Prophet 6 covers so many bases.
I wait till guitar center has a 4 year 0 interest on the gearcard, and pull the trigger! On that OB6. They only reason I have not done it it’s because I heard the OB6 and the P6 sound very similar. I really want to hear someone tell my their different. By the way, I replaced all the nobs on my Tempest with P6 nobs, looks bad ass!
I'm inspired mostly by old school synth soundtracks and it's shocking that almost everyone used a Prophet-5 and synths like the OBX or OBXa barely made an appearance. It was mostly an Oberheim SEM Four Voice. If an OBX or OBXa was used, it was in conjunction with a larger synth ensemble (for example, Brad Fidel's score for Terminator used an OBXa alongside a Prophet 10 and Emulator 1). So the Prophet 6 was the first Sequential synth I got and I absolutely love it. I had no interest in an OB6 for a long time but as of recently I've started to warm up to it. I would say in terms of comparisons: Prophet=New Wave, Phil Collins, Genesis, Tears For Fears, Peter Gabriel, John Carpenter, Oberheim-Van Halen, Styx, Bon Jovi, TOTO. It feels like the Oberheim sound is meant to be played alongside a loud band and cut through in a mix where as the Prophet feels more versatile and can be at home anywhere.
@@NoirEtBlancVie yea man it's insane. i'm so thankful i grabbed the P6 before the most recent price hikes. you're prior videos on it actually helped a lot in my decision, so thanks a milli for that, fam ✊🏾
OB-6 patch 007 Broken EP I suggest (I Know outrageous to even suggest!) the greatest patch of all time. Dont own one I have a REV2 16 Voice which is actually awesome, but cannot do that SEM thing as only an OBerheim can.....
Haha, you and me both…it was sad to box it up and ship it back, but at this point I just want to borrow stuff. There’s no room for buying more synths 🙂
Owned an OB6 for 3 years now. Its an amazing swiss army knife synth with so many sounds. I do hate the way it saves patches though. And the way that half the patches are read only. But the notch filter on max resonance! I do have to admit that it's only about 80% of a true SEM based Obie. I can never quite get that Oberheim SVF shimmer the same way you can with a legit SEM or one of it's derivatives like the 4 voice. But I also don't have that kind of money. Personally I think people dumping their OB6 for the OBX8 are fools. I don't hear 2 thousand dollars of difference. But when I tried the OB6 next to a Prophet 8 rev2, I did hear more than $1500 difference. The Prophet sounded flat. The OB6 sounded 3D.
You cannot compare the two. I own both and while omnisphere has a boatload of different sounds/presets none of the sounds in omnisphere sounds even remotely close to my prophet 6
I own almost all of the worlds most expensive and sort after synths and I can honestly say from personal experience that they really compliment each other in my ecosystem. They work in symbiosis to truly open up insane sound design possibilities with fat creamy basslines they really are a beast.
I use my OB6 more than my Moog One. (just a comment on 2 modern analog giants) The filter is insane! It is my “go to” synthesiser. 👊🏼

I've been thinking of upgrading my rev2 - is it worth it? have been looking for a side by side comparison of the two but doesn't seem to exist!
Now I have a synth that has no limits anymore and so I`m happy with that in the end
and yeah a side by side comparison isn`t really worth it as it`s just about knowing that the above restrictions from before have been lifted
Synth A. Prophet 6
Synth B. OB6
Yes, that parpy growl gives it away
The first in the ob6, the second p6... I know that filter anywhere.. liked you the p6 is my baby.. I can't wait tell the obx comes out just so all the ob6 is better talk will softly quit.. not that I think the p5 is better then p6, but they are different.. ob6 needs the obx to restore order in the force..lol.
I own both. planned on selling my least favorite and I just can't
I feel you I’m on the same boat
came here to decide which of both (desktop) versions i am going to buy.
BOTH !!!!
If I had to pick just one, then Prophet 6 for sure.
Desktop of each chained for the indecisive.
Great video! Any official word on the blind test? Hoping B is inded the OB6 🙂
The answer is quite simple….. it’s yes
How did you know the exact video I wanted to see?!
We have the Shinning 😅
@@pjlabarge oh HELLLLL no, never Affirm…god nooooooooo 😩
That’s like a fate worse than death.
THE OSCAR FOR BEST SPONSOR SEGUE GOES TO:
I would say in terms of comparisons:
Prophet=New Wave, Phil Collins, Genesis, Tears For Fears, Peter Gabriel, John Carpenter,
Oberheim-Van Halen, Styx, Bon Jovi, TOTO.
It feels like the Oberheim sound is meant to be played alongside a loud band and cut through in a mix where as the Prophet feels more versatile and can be at home anywhere.
Great assessment! That's what I think as well.
That patch in the beginning sounds EXACTLY like my eyes by Travis Scott
And what about Prophet 6 vs Prophet Rev 2?
isn't it wild that at the time of this video's posting (early 2022) the P6 is the same price as the P5 (i'm counting a $100 difference as the same)
Oh snap! You’re right, good god the price of the prophet 6 keeps going up and up!!!
@@NoirEtBlancVie yea man it's insane. i'm so thankful i grabbed the P6 before the most recent price hikes. you're prior videos on it actually helped a lot in my decision, so thanks a milli for that, fam ✊🏾
like, is the P6 gonna surpass the 5 in price by next year? haha we'll see i guess
P6 everytime. Thank you.
I preferred test sound B over A, but I have no clue which is which!
OB-6 patch 007 Broken EP I suggest (I Know outrageous to even suggest!) the greatest patch of all time. Dont own one I have a REV2 16 Voice which is actually awesome, but cannot do that SEM thing as only an OBerheim can.....
I can totally agree, everyone is all about patch 007! it's a great number for a patch ;)
I would like to have both. Unfortunately I'm not rich. Lol.
Haha, you and me both…it was sad to box it up and ship it back, but at this point I just want to borrow stuff. There’s no room for buying more synths 🙂
If someone can tell the type of the speakers 1:00 . Please.
Had em both OB6. I regret selling it!
I keep hearing that the knobs are loose on the OB6. Any truth to this ?
Trigon maybe?😂
OB-X8 or Prophet 6?
Why not both?
/sees pricetag
ohhhhh.....well then, I'll settle for the VST
A is the Prophet and B is the OB6...?
I’m thinking #2 in blind test is the P6. Am I right? Cant find the answer anywhere. What did I win?!
For me it is p5 and ob6
P10 and OB6 here! (had P6 but didn't care for it)
Where do you get better and more sounds, Prophet 6 or Omnisphere?..
You cannot compare the two. I own both and while omnisphere has a boatload of different sounds/presets none of the sounds in omnisphere sounds even remotely close to my prophet 6
I´m still quite confused which Sequential to buy.
Prophet 10 lol
I saw Matt Johnson was recommending it on his channel.
@strangerhythm I’m gravitating more and more towards the REV2-16 desktop.
I own almost all of the worlds most expensive and sort after synths and I can honestly say from personal experience that they really compliment each other in my ecosystem. They work in symbiosis to truly open up insane sound design possibilities with fat creamy basslines they really are a beast.
You want a cookie, or what?
@@adamziolkowski2549 lmao 🤣 I was saying the same thing as I was reading his obnoxious rant
Prophet = A
