A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by some time convalescing. It's my first time using the Octatrack for some ambient, droning sounds, and once again, it doesn't disappoint. As before, the Octatrack's scenes are the star of the show, allowing for me to fade in/out tracks, as well as add modulation and effects either by track or on the master. What a beautiful machine.
I've also been pretty keen to give the OB-6 a spin for a while, since I love that Oberheim sound and will never buy the vintage gear. Despite its classic tone, it's got a lot of great modern features... that I don't really take advantage of here. I simply started playing it and this patch (007) sounded so good that I had to record something. Next time.
Elektron Octatrack MkII - samples, track effects, master effects
Sequential/Oberheim OB-6 + Eventide Space - poly synth
Novation SL MkIII - MIDI controller for the OB-6
Written and performed within a 2-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

This feels like music from a Metroid Game. I love it.
This type of music makes me wanna go to the beach and stare to the late night ocean and starry sky
lol I had this playlist on in the background and IMMEDIATELY recognized 007 from an OB6 and clicked over to make sure. That is my absolute favorite preset.
Yes, the OB-6 preset 007 "Broken EP" is incredible!
This is SO good. When someone slowly unfolds a melody and I as the listener am simultaneously not knowing what comes next and feeling a mysterious familiarity...this what dreams are like for the dreamer.
very nice landscape thx for the trip :)
Man. Your and inspiration. This reminds me of childhood. Growing up and becoming someone new. Damn. Feels.
I just wanted to say that you’re incredibly talented, thank you for what you’re doing. Keep up the good work! P.S. This video convinced me to buy an OB-6 and Octatrack, now they’re my favorite devices
The Ob6 sound reminds me of Dawn Chorus by Thom Yorke. Sounds beautiful!
I was thinking that literal thing, they're both beautiful and reflective and melancholic.
This tripped me out! Was literally thinking the same as I scrolled down.
the harmonies too... ig dudes lucky thom mustn't be really into exploring yt channels bc he sure is very much into suing ppl for waaay less resemblance than this lmao
Just goes to show how creamy the Prophet 5 is :)
@@fernandowhitaker735 Thom Yorke has literally never sued anyone, it was alleged that Lana Del Rey was being sued for ripping off Creep but this isn't true - Radiohead's publishers were in talks with Lana's about it and nothing came of it. No lawsuit ever took place. Stop reading tabloids :)
Just noticing this old vid. Another masterpiece
The sound coming from your Elektron at the beginning reminds me a lot of the intro to Godspeed You Black Emperor's "Static"
I think the ob6 is the best synth around. Yes, I’m biased. Yes, I own one.i have a studio full of new and vintage synths/drum machines/effects units..etc. What Tom and Dave have done with upgrading an obx and a prophet is amazing! Kudos for a great soundscape vid too mate. 🎶🕶
Listening to that OB-6 sound is like slipping into a warm bath.
I love the chord progressions you make!
I like videos like this it helps to inspire lyric writing, just going with the mood and getting the feeling out
Love this jam! Very thoughtful and nostalgic.
Really enjoyed this - love the OB-6!
That was beautiful. I've been looking for an example of how I'd like to perform with an octatrack and this is it - I'm going to go ahead and buy one. Thanks for this wonderful inspiration!
I think that the 007 sound of the OB6 it's one of the most beatifull sound of this synth! Really nice!!
007 🤘🤘
Knew this would exist.
Great jam. I agree about that preset too, it's an absolute killer app for the OB6. First day I got my OB6 I got to it and just stayed there for an hour.
That's literally what happened here! This is the first day I got my hands on the OB-6.
Bingo lol. I probably won't keep my OB6 because it's (almost) a bit of a one trick pony, and ties up too much fund/space that I would rather put into other things, but that one single preset is what keeps me from letting it go. Ridiculous as I literally make a living making presets......
That preset... it’s insane...I keep coming back to it after months
@@BluffMunkey I know EXACTLY what you mean. My heart says keep. My head says - funds.
What did you do in the end ?
@@LordoftheBadgers Sold all my hardware in the end as it became too much of a distraction in the studio. Virtually all my work is software based.
Wonderful like thousands of fireflys coming out of my sound system und lay me to bed
Beautiful! I got some Thom Yorke Anima vibes in places towards the end. Hope you take that as a compliment :)
beautifully done. I love how natural a performance this is. Excellent job. =D And thanks for sharing your art.
That was really nice. Not even sure you needed the Octatrack, just solid musically.
One thing I like about your videos apart from being actual music is how the written explanations are somehow rhythmic and go over well. So far all the videos I've seen stand the test of not looking at the video, actual music that could come from a record or the radio or just stream sound.
Thanks! The goal is always music first and everything else second.
@@JayHosking good policy given the best pedagogical tool is inspiration.
DAMN THAT OB6 HAS SOME TONES SON!!! Wow. What a great composition Jay. Great soundscape. Love the stuff going on in the whole spectrum. Textures really give it space.
So huge. I love this.
Like a sad version of Lorn with all those textures. Or a Mogwai track. Really good stuff.
Makes me really think about the octatrack to pair with my digitone. >.>
OB6iously the 007 patch is the Moneypenny, but thank you for creating, and sharing this gem of a piece, it's really gorgeous.
You make really nice inspiring music... also giving a lot of nice advices regarding how you make things work👍🏻 thanks...please continue...
I know this probably is one of your easiest-to-put-together works, but it nevertheless evoked a lot of emotion and imagery in my mind's eye. I thought it was beautiful, and would love to hear where you would take this next with additional time. A full production with something like this portion as a beginning/end, and a middle segment of higher intensity/energy with some drums would make for quite a thrilling cinematic/narrative experience. Anyway, thanks for sharing.
So Hosking-like melody, strange, huh?! 🙏You are such a fine musician..... Thanx...
Again.......
I love the OB-6 so much I have one❤
lovely stuff!
The OB 06 sound so good !!. great performance btw ! :)
Good lord this is amazing work Jay
I'm learning a lot from your videos - thanks for the details, it's very helpful!
This is incredible
Simply beautiful. Thanks for this wonderful piece of music. 🙏🏼💕👊🏼™️
Jay, this is absolutely gorgeous. There's really not much else to say.
I love it! The OB sounds sick.
Beautiful!
This is quite beautiful. I was encapsulated by it.
Nice ! I love the OB-6, glad to have one here
Beautiful stuff. 007/ 507 is definitely the most amazing factory patch on the OB-6. A truly stunning instrument and definitely a keeper for sure.
007 is god patch. Skipped writing over it just because.
This gives me all the feels. Thank you.
Something about the ergonomics and the symmetry of your hardware layout really appeals to me in this video. Like the octotrack, ob6 and midi keyboard all kinda line up perfectly (but not too perfectly) and everything is within reach, it just looks like a joy to play with. Ergonomics.... Makes a big difference 😂. Obviously sounded great too...
Downer alert.
We're just contemplating between letting our beloved 15 years old dog go, or to stretch it until she's as far as we possibly can at this very moment after our vet told us to let her go yesterday, and we didn't listen to him.. decided to take her home so she could live for another days. I know she has few more juice left in her hence the decision.. for now. Then tonight, I randomly played this video and it hits me pretty hard. Thanks for the great tune & tones.
Sorry for the random comment, just needed to let it out off my chest.
No trouble at all, and I'm so sorry to hear it. We lost a one-of-a-kind 12-year-old dog this summer, so I understand very much what you're going through. Take care, and it's an honour to have provided some solace.
I am sorry about your dog, we just had to put down our little 14yr old buddy :(
Lovely once again. Thanks 😊
The first minute reminds me of Solar Field's work on Mirror's Edge
Great impro and Good sounding Ambiance, Bravo !
The OB-6 sounds beautiful! It seems to do a lot more than just the classic 80s brass and pads.
Great video and piece. Thanks for pointing out the great preset on the OB-6, I'll have to revisit mine again. Also, thank you for the hidden SL-III embedded review, you've confirmed my thoughts on this controller. I wonder if they used the same keybed /chassis for the Summit.
They say they did use the same keybed! Which means that thing is probably a dream to play. If I wasn't so fond of my Peak, I'd probably strongly consider a Summit.
@@JayHosking same. The Peak is a great modern future classic... no money left to grab a Summit at this time, though. Eventually!
Awesome Oberheim
this is awesome, you should release this track as it is! also a little walk through video about what's going on in the OT would be great, lovely ambience.
That was fantastic. Really enjoyed the mood - thank you!
I'm hearing this again as it showed up in my RUclips cue still sounds wonderful, I really love your music,
and your ability to be still and perform excellent ambient musical pieces...
Very relaxing!
Fantastic sound and improv! ..and OB-6 has so nice tone 👌
What a great track!
literally every song of mine using patch number 007 sounds just like that. awesome sound.
This sounds 🔥
awesome vid, thanks. . Just got an OT mk2, 2 days ago. Great.
Amazing. Going to sample this into OT and see what happens!
Danke!
Love this! Great job.
I had the OB6 desktop for a year, and agreed 007 is THE patch. It’s a wonderful synth, but sold it as it’s so distinctive it kinda dominates the other gear it plays with. I’ve now settled on a MC707 + Prophet Rev2 + Subsequent 37 setup; those two synths are perfect compliments to each other.
Question for you and potentially Jay as well, as someone who has been eyeing the Rev2 and the OB6 do you think the 007 patch could be recreated on the Rev2, or is it not possible to nail without the SEM filter?
Hard to say, as I've never really played around with the Rev2, but I imagine you could get close to it on a number of poly synths. Give it a shot!
Very cool Jay!
You have a new subscriber. :)
Wonderful music
I really like this one
Beautiful music , congratulations
Nice work!
Very cool! 🤟🏻
👏very nice
Very beautiful, this track reminds me of 'Memories of green' on 'Blade Runner' by Vangelis
I feel the same about my Novation SL mk3. I won't be buying another Novation product.
Beautiful track... Really love the atmosphere and used sounds...
Thanks you!
Великолепно! Очень успокаивает и умиротворяет...
Brilliant
Taking me over to the dark side of the moon with this one good sir
amazing sound!
I am with you regarding the Novation mk SL III.. I thought it would be a great performance Master keyboard and sequenzer for all my hardware Synthesizers since I prefer to play DAW less.... but I realized after two days that it was ... a nice keybed to play my gear... maybe quite ok arpeggiator... but the sequenzer did not really convince me....
Hey, many have recommended the mk SL III for me since I am looking for master keyboard and sequencer, but I am a bit sceptic about it. I have thought about getting the Arturia keystep pro and only con I have heard about it is that it has minikeys, which I dont personally mind. Any thoughts or recommendations?
INCREIBLE..FELICITACIONES..
Whoa Man ! This is Gorgeous 💖
18 mar '20 floating in this beauty's arms for the umpteenth time , tears of nostalgia and joy in my eyes , this beautiful day couldn't have started better
🙏
Nicely done! 👍 Subscribed.
Reminds me of an ambient Múm song.
mum! Yes is this band still alive?
Like a Bladerunner style !
Very beautiful brother :)
lovely !!!
Love it!
Really nice, as always, Jay. How big a fan are you of the OB-6? I'm considering getting the module. Thanks!
I think it does some things really beautifully, but ultimately I have a tough time with the filter in anything more subdued. I think if you're after that Oberheim brassy sound, it's a great choice, but it wouldn't be the first analogue poly I'd consider. Best of luck, and thanks!
@@JayHosking Gotcha. I have mostly vintage gear and am just starting to try some of these more modern analogs. I'm a big fan of the hybrid DSI P12 and several recent Moogs but no newer Oberheims. Appreciate your quick response! Thanks.
I was going to say that MIDI controller looks awfully familiar, and then I realized it was an SL MK3.
Hi, can you be so kind and tell me how you feel the Novation launchkey keybed? Whay are your feeling about it? Great videos
It feels good! Hard to quantify. It's about the same as the Komplete Kontrol series of keybeds from NI, same as what's on the Summit. Certainly OK for anything that doesn't require a lot of velocity work (e.g. piano), and even then, if you're a pro, it would probably be OK. And thanks!
@@JayHosking Thanks for your opinion. You helped me make a decision, appreciate. Take care
amazing..
So good
The mighty Uberheim
Nice!
WOW
Nice! What do you actually record onto or into? Straight to DAW while the camera is running or some other hardware device?
Everything sounds good in Cm.
