A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.
I'm lucky enough to have access to a new studio space, and am now in the process of moving over there. That means the days and nights have been long. One evening I was casually noodling on the Take 5 and came up with a patch and arpeggio I liked, but didn't feel I had time and capacity to do a full sequence and arrangement with other devices.
That's where the Midicake ARP comes in to save the day. Rather than sequence anything, I simply sent my MIDI data out of the Take 5 and into the ARP. The ARP then recontextualized the notes and can send them out to up to four other devices (here, I used three, plus MIDI clock to the DrumBrute Impact). Thanks to the ARP, I could explore chords and improvisation without having to write a single note in a sequencer. The ARP really is a great solution to a classic songwriting problem: being able to find the song with all the parts at once, rather than imagine all the parts and then write them.
From there, it was a matter of laying down some instruments and effects I liked the sound of. No surprises here, other than the Boss DM-101, which I got recently. It doesn't quite have the personality of the Matriarch delay, but it's a great and more versatile analog delay that I look forward to using more.
All in all, a really fun jam, and I was extremely grateful to have the tools I needed to write the song on the fly across multiple instruments.
Thanks for listening.
Sequential Take 5 - main arpeggio, MIDI controller/data out
Midicake ARP - "sequencer" (note recontextualizer? arpeggiator?)
Arturia DrumBrute Impact - drums
Dreadbox Nymphes through Strymon BigSky - arpeggio two
Blackout Model D through Boss DM-101 - bass synth
Roland SH-101 through Walrus Sloër - arpeggio three (the slow high one)
Kenton Pro-Solo Mk3 - MIDI to CV for SH-101
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI through to all devices
Performed and recorded live, with eq, compression, and limiting in the box.

Glorious. It's funny how every time you release a new work, I think "This one's the best." Pretty amazing how they're all the best. Great stuff.
I was just thinking the exact same thing. Everytime I think this one's my favorite, I listen to another one, and DAMN IT! That one's awesome too
I'm here at work, mopping the floor. I got an hour still to go and I'm really relaxing listening to to this piece. You made me feel like I'm on some peaceful beach, walking the sand. Thank you
Love the midicake arp
It's a good day when Jay Hosking uploads
I wish I could arrange my synths like you do! Amazing.
Excellent job, Jay. Love the 5/4 feel. Gives it this Weird Fishes/Radiohead touch, which is just beautiful.
Beautiful and very creative use of the arp! 🤩👍 (love odd time signatures too! I have been listening to a lot of progressive metal these last years 😊)
Damn this was so nice. The Take 5 is my fav synth of all time! All these are working really well together, great stuff.
Really impressed by the Take5 , and the Nymphes as well,
I'm so divided , it Will be The Matriarch or the Take 5 ...i can't afford both , and since I GOT the, Granny and the new update just doubled the memory of the Take 5 .... It's getting more and more difficult NOT to go for the Take 5 , When both Jay and Jorb....and Matt Jamiroqwai Johnson , strongly recommend the Take 5 😅
@@MikkelGrumBovin If you have the Grandmother, the Take 5 would be a really great pairing and add something sonically you don't already have! I currently have a couple Sequential synths and would love a Moog to pair, have only heard great things about the Grandmother. But seriously, the Take 5 is absolutely as good as people say. I play mine almost every single day.
this is so good - you have absolute mastery over these instruments and the midi setup!
LOVELY! .. interesting how the Take5 is driving all the music ..
Fantatsic! Goes in my "inspirational" video collection. Well now we see a winning combo; Jay Hosking plus Midicake ARP. Welcome to the DAWLESS MIDIVERSE
This is beautiful, Jay. I'll be returning to this one a lot!
Need to look into the Midicake ARP
It's super useful and fun.
Upon this relisten, it really strikes me how GIGANTIC the Black Model D sounds , its giving the TAURUS a fair fight..... And its simply pure genius how you let the 101 contrapunctuate the rythm ... Just beautiful !
What pulsating joy!
This is bloody brilliant, Jay! Just beautiful.
Thank you for such a fun and easy device for making full arrangements!
the drumbrute impact is such a solid drum machine
Agreed. I think it flies under the radar because it's so affordable.
@@JayHosking do you think it’s a better live performance drum machine than the Roland TR-6s / 8s? I was thinking about swapping my TR-6S out for the DB impact or the Erica Synth LXR-02
@@SethWeisfeld I liked the sounds of the TR-8s but it ultimately wasn't for me; the menu system wasn't ideal for me, and the performance stuff wasn't frontloaded. I actually enjoyed playing with its predecessor, the TR-8, more because it had the scatter stuff more upfront. Never tried the 6s, but I have friends who say great things about it. If anything, I might just pick up a TR-8 one of these days, or hope for Roland to add a TR that has more performance stuff (like the DrumBrute Impact's smart randomizer and roller bar) on the front of it
Im so glad that i found ur music, thank u
I'm going to share this on my community tab to let them know why i have been away from posting videos of my playing guitar and singing songs because about a month ago i have been enchanted with wonderful stuff like yours here!
Lovely music as always, man. Reminded me that art is meant to be inspiring.
This is like a "beautiful sci fi vistas" soundtrack.
Also inspiring me to maybe to a piece in an odd time soon.
You know I'd love to hear it!
Such a beautiful track !!! Which can drive my mind somewhere else in a beautiful world...
Masterpiece!
Again awesome Jay. When the bass came in I got chills!
Same!
This was so inspiring! Jay truly never disappoints
Grossartig den Workflow zu sehen. Kapieren werd ichs trotzdem nie...😂 Super gemacht.
Wow, what a beautiful soundscape! Chills down the spine!
Amazing, thank you !
Wow, just wow!
Amazing! Beautiful! 👌🏻👏🏻
Brilliant
Awesome stuff man.
Increadible. Your performances are getting better and better.
It's amazing.
Very musical and very creative.
I bought my first Baringer Wasp synth, I'll start with that. Perhaps someday I will have a similar setup, but still long ago it’s not the synthesizers, but the one who plays them. And what he plays.
Respect.
Very nice harmony in this piece !
Fantastic! I miss my old SH-101. Such a fun synth. Thanks so much!
Loved it. Thanks!!!
Awesome!
Wow. Another stunning jam. I am in awe of your talent. And your love of the art shines through.
WOW❤️ Just wonderfull Jay👍🙏🙏
You really are a musical genius.
Amazing!
Beautiful and impressive!!
Nice simple idea with a perfect patching ... very efficient! Thank you!
Incredible enchanting melody, thank you Jay !
Always interesting to see what you’re going to use in each video. Inspiring.
This makes me feel something. Great performance
Utterly epic ! Wonderful composition and your sound selection is always exquisite - I think Roland, Sequential, Moog and new kid Dreadbox were beautifully balanced. I can barely find the words to describe the ebb and flow of the music :)
Very nice tune Jay, That tune took my mind to another level...You are the KING!!
Beautiful. That's the style I prefer... Nice chord progression and great outdo indeed !
This is insane! Beautiful sounds and melodies. Congrats!
Love it
Very nice performance! you are a great creator!. Hypnotic and pacefull !
It is f a n t a s t i c !! !! Thank you for sharing your music creativity 🙂✨

The Hoskingianna is strong in in this one 🤨👆

hell yeah
Slick!
You need to make an album.
Wow 🎉
This is awesome. Sadly my MIDI-fu is lacking and I need to learn WAY more.
Gert lush!
How does the MIDIcake ARP (which I've been considering) compare to the Conductive Labs NDLR (which I already own)?
What are the similarities, differences and where does it improve on it (I'm thinking one area is in the re-sequencing of MIDI note input data?)?
Oh ... and I liked the track too!
PS What's with the blacked out Behringer, unmentioned by name?
This could be a very long answer, and I'm afraid I don't have capacity for that at the moment. The short version is: the NDLR more or less locks you into a scale, whereas the ARP can play whatever notes you tell it; the NDLR has easy controls to create colour chords (6ths, 7ths, etc.) to any note, whereas the ARP requires you to set those chords for specific notes; the ARP allows for input of notes and spits out sequences, and as far as I know, the NDLR doesn't. They are doing similar things, and both are great. I'm playing a lot these days with scale/key/mode changes so the ARP is currently a great fit for me. And thanks!
The Behringer is the Minimoog Model D clone. He mentioned it in one of his earlier jams.
@@MatthewKennedy310 I know WHAT it is - I own one - I was enquiring about the subterfuge!
@@stephencrane561 I’m so sorry, I misread your comment. He had a friend repaint it, switches and all. Again, so sorry for the misunderstanding.
@@MatthewKennedy310 Absolutely no apology necessary - you were only trying to help, Matt!
Hi, just wanted you to be aware that you inspired me to sell my almost all guitar rig (I've been playing guitar for half of my life) and buy Moog Sub37 and Analog Four.
Is ARP so different from NDLR ?
The Arp doesn't constrain you to a scale, so you can musically a little weirder and more interesting. Moreover, you can play notes into the Arp and it just sorts out the arrangement for your synths. But the two devices definitely overlap in roles.
Thanks for your answer :) So you keep twice ? Have you tried harmonizer mode on Oxi One ?@@JayHosking
Is this an orange or yellow Lyra?
Great video
Blackout Model D?
Yeah he did Uli dirty on this one:)
Lovely stuff - What happened to your Boog?
Nice break! ...and reskinned Model D 😯
hi jay, question: how do you think the midicake compares to the NDLR, and which do you prefer?
I'm working in and out of scales these days, so the Midicake Arp is more for me, being able to feed it whatever notes you want. However, the NDLR is a little faster off the ground, and I'm sure many people would prefer that all the chords it spits out just work for the key.
@@JayHosking thanks jay, thats what I feared, got to collect them all ;). This is now on my list, also owning NDLR and oxi one haha
Just Sensual Chord n PaD Prrogression 🤤🤤🤩🥰💥🎆🏆🏆
Jaffa j.
How long does it take you to come up with something like this??
Hey! This one actually didn't take long at all, since I sort of wrote it on the spot with the Take 5, and let the ARP sort out the output (with my guidance) to the other synths. From there, it was dialling in the right sounds.
Is that Model D from Behringer😂I just googled blackout model D and turns out it gave me nothing other than behringer D
Yeah, that's it. A friend has a habit of custom painting his gear all black, and did the Model D for me, right down to painting the switches.
@@JayHoskinglooks really cool, and your music is always inspiring and beautiful.❤ Keep up with the good work!
I bought a SH-101 for 50 UK pounds years ago from a studio in East London. Sold it for 150 and thought I made a killing? I'm now old and still stupid.
