Saw Bonnie live in 2017 and at 66 yrs old she still belted out these songs just as strong and good as back in the day. Still touring at 70. She told some fantastic stories as well
That's amazing!
I was young when this song came out, but I remember how massive it was. This was the first single I ever bought on vinyl!
I played it until it warped!!!
Bonnie Tyler is LOVED in Germany ❤❤❤ #danceofthevampires
When a singer makes you feel like they’ve lived through what they are singing about, that’s perfection. What a great individual voice, I love this song even though it’s very different to what I would normally listen to!
How come your comment is from a month ago?
i listen to a lot of music, but metal is the heart of my music... but Bonnie Tyler is always in the rotation
@@adamkeane2622 He's from the past.....a time traveller! :D
@@ThelSuperlKing That's what I was thinking too lol.
What would you normally listen to?
I love her voice, but dear god are back up vocals crystal and spot the hell on
There's a recent interview from 2019 where they talk about them a bit. Tons of work to do those backing vocals.
"[Frank] Filipetti says while the vocal sessions were difficult, the results were worth it. Explaining the arduous vocal stacking process, Filipetti says Eric and Rory would sing a vocal line for the chorus, perhaps a harmony part. Then they would double them doing the same line again.
“Then they would sing the next step in the harmonic sequence and they would probably do the tonic note first, then the third, then the fifth and we’d double each of those. Then we’d probably add an octave over the original and that would vary somewhat, but that was the basic idea,” Filipetti recalls, reminding that there was no Autotune back in those days. “Then we would go back and do the same thing again, but this time Eric and Rory would sing in harmony instead of in unison, and then when we did the double, they would switch the parts, so if Rory was on the top and Eric was on the bottom on the first pass, Rory would be on the bottom and Eric would be on the top on the second pass and we’d do the whole thing that way.”
“It was 2:00am when we finished a 10-hour session doing the backgrounds,” recalls Dodd. “I thought we were done when Jim piped in, ‘Hey Icy, you want to sing the duet parts now?’ ‘I wanna go home Jim,’ but I acquiesced.”"
@@MmtSMan thanks for that read, that was great!
This is one of those songs than gives me goosebumps. Her voice ,although damaged, is what gave her an unmistakable sound. Truly a great singer.
RIP Jim Steinman. A phenomenal songwriter, not just for Bonnie Tyler in this, but also for Celine Dion and of course for Meatloaf.
And pandora's box!
Freaking Lyric Wizard!
RIP loaf
That Isolated Vocals track really takes this song to another level ! Sometimes it's awkward to listen to a song without the usual instruments... but here, just Bonnie and her background singers... it's phenomenal. Very interesting analysis on your part, too. I'm glad I found this !!
the most underrated female singer ever. she is one of the greats. Whats amazing about her voice is how it crosses so many music genres. Its every genre from soul to rock to country to jazz. She can sing anything & nobody has more power vocals than Bonnie.
I'd say that the most underrated female singer is Jennifer Rush, but surely, Bonnie is up there.
10:30 the long haired pianist is the late, great Jim Steinman who wrote the song, along with writing almost all of Meatloaf's hits.
Rory Dodd on backup vocals is an amazing singer in his own right. Take Nowhere Fast or Tonight Is What It Means to Be Young, his contributions to both those songs are amazing!
Did Rory not do the singing on Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through from a couple of years earlier?
Jim steinman used Rory for all his vocals mainly...some amazing demos out there..the Original demo to "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All' is amazing, Originally offered to Meat Loaf (as was Total Eclipse of the Heart) but his record company turned it down and was given to Air Supply..one of my favourite all time ballads ❤️
exactly.
I know someone mentioned it. But “It’s a Heartache” is freaking great too!!
Absolutely.
Yes!
Wasn't it co-composed by the famous Ronnie Scott, jazz saxophonist ?
Excellent song
When it hit the chorus I thought “aha, this is like a Meat Loaf song…” Then I saw of course Jim Steinman, you genius bastard…
I was too young to appreciate this when it came out; but finally with life experience, this song matched with this incredible vocal performance... wow. I'm not a singer, but Bonnie "solves" certain vowel/consonant transitions in amazing, gorgeous ways... god, that tone, wow.
Just thought I'd mention the awesome backing vocals on this, it's not really mentioned a whole lot but I feel a study in backing vocals would be very useful to do.
Featuring the insanely talented Rory Dodd.
One of the best backups in a song ever
I really appreciate the research you do for the artists that you cover and the vocal histories you dive into, as I'm really fascinated by what made artists sound the way they do - especially those with distinct tones and techniques. Thank you!
I wish my vocals had the power of Bonnie's, as it's her delivery that elevates this song into the epic power ballad that it is, imo. But unfortunately the only thing my vocals have in common with Bonnie Tyler is that every now and then it falls apart.
I absolutely loved that moment where you just looked right at the camera and said, "She's extraordinary isn't she", because I very definitely felt the same way watching this, I mean I've always believed this but I feel this video really emphasized it in a way that I haven't really felt before, and a great deal of that is due to your evaluation of her voice. Sometimes we just believe many of these singers to be fantastic, sometimes we know why, sometimes it's just a feeling, but in either case when someone knowledgeable can come along and either give form to that feeling of awe that we have with these singers or perhaps point out even finer nuances than the ones we had previously spotted it either gives us a perspective or a deeper appreciation than what we had before.
P.S. In case you can't tell, I really love your channel and your evaluations. lol. Thank you!
I love isolated vocals videos. It's so amazing to hear all the little details that are normally hidden by the instruments.
So many singers have tried to cover this song but they do not have Bonnie's growl . The hair was epic ! The guy has an incredible voice I think Steinman picked Bonnie because he saw her as a female Meatloaf ,able to put real emotion into his songs She would never have had success if not for the damage and her unique tone.
I'm blown away by how perfect this song sounds even without any of the instruments. A testament to the impressive vocals!
Yes she has kept her huskyness and even back in 2013 she was still singing, representing the UK in the Eurovision song contest. And she still sings, she will be touring also in Finland next year, being only 70 yrs young!!
I love the contrast between Bonnie's grittiness and the backing singers clear tone.
She is amazing, I always felt the Welsh accent often helps welsh singers place their consonants so clearly. Shirley Bassey also can belt out an octave and still make space for that precision.
Hell even the backing vocalists are amazing beyond belief
Her pain turned into glory 💯💯she mastered her vocals damage and all . She turned her set back into a new sound at its best 💯💯
Fascinating to hear these vocals isolated, one of the more striking voices in pop. I still remember the first time I heard this song as a teenager some 15 years ago and immediately being hooked.
I love Bonnie Tyler. I think her voice was unforgettable, the fact she is still played is a testament to that. But she had a couple of hits 40 years ago, she came and went. Why the love now?
Love never goes out of fashion !
Her singing voice is amazing.
She is still singing greatly!
Hearing this A-cappella gives me the chills💯💯
I realy appriciate, that you always put an emphasis on vocal health, and the remifications of putting to much stress on your voice, surgery and damage to your vocal chords!
And autotune didn't exist - so Bonnie and backup singers needed to have skill to pull off the vocal performance.
💯💯💯💯💯
Don’t be naïve even in the 60s there were filters that you can put on the mic or after recording
Jim Steinman was a genius composer, making songs that fit the singers he handed them to. Whether this one for Bonnie Tyler, "I'll do Anything for Love (But I Won't do That)" to Meatloaf etc.
(Isn't that him on the piano in that video, even?)
Yes. Yes that IS Jim on piano.
And he joined to the team of the 1984 Walter Hill movie 'Streets of Fire' to make a band just for that movie called 'Fire Inc' and composed two amazing songs: 'Nowhere Fast' and my favourite song: 'Tonight It's What It Means To Be Young'. If you don't watch it or listened it,you MUST! By the way, I think this song used to be sung with Meat Loaf at duet,if I'm not wrong. Nothing more, a big hug from Spain and care yourself! 😺
He also wrote It's All Coming Back To Me for Celine Dion.
@@pablotornerotarrago7602 He also used those songs in the Musical "Dance of the Vampires", but changed the text a little, I believe. Depending on who sings the songs, it sounds great, too!

Best from
Bonie tyler.
1. I need a hero.
2. Lost in france.
2. It'a heartache.
3. Straight from the heart.
4. Bitterblue.
@@ford1546 It's actually "Holding Out for a Hero".
My suggestion for the Roar! channel is to make your own haggis!
@@ford1546 That was not my intention. My intention was to give her a project for her channel, where she does things she hasn't done before.
@@Valdagast 😀👍🏻
I mean, I always knew Bonnie had a powerful delivery in this song, but when isolated it is truly mind-blowing!
Loved this one thank you Beth. Loved Bonnie Tyler for years. I knew she was Welsh, but not her real name! You learn something new every day!
Amazing analysis of one of the greatest songs ever written! Beth you really have a fantastic way of taking apart a vocal in such a positive way! And u are so right you are so right on Bonnie's amazing vocal here nails passion and the emotion of the stories desolation in spades!!
This song gives me such goosebumps. Her voice is so raw, warm and strong. If I was better at singing her voice is my dream.
I suspect you know that she's Welsh and if it's one thing Wales is known for it's singing - Holding Out For A Hero and It's A Heartache are gems too
This song is very special, as is it's singer. Thank you for choosing to present this wonderful music.
The vampire love song. I remember hearing it all the time on the radio and of course much music the Canadian version of MTV. 80's had so much amazing music.
I cannot hear this song and not hear the rendition from the movie old school. “Every now and then I get a little bit terrified I see the fuckin look in your eyes!” Hahahaha. Classic.
Thanks. I've been a huge Bonnie Tyler fan since the '70s and can't remember seeing this video. It appears to be a mashup of at least two live performances, the interlude from the music video and a studio session with the late rock opera master, Jim Steinman.
I've listened to this song since I was little, and I never knew it was a male backup singer,I've always thought it was a female gospel singer, thanks Beth for enlightening me!💖💖💖
She took lemons and made lemonade out of her situation, and thus was born an amazing song!👍👍👍
An distinctive voice, no doubt!!! Good analysis again 👍👏
Blindsided by seeing the late Jim Steinman on the piano in this video. Ye gods, my heart.
Hail the Traveler.
Best ❤ song ever! You can feel the emotions with every note.
Oh wow 🤩 just gorgeous Bonnie’s voice and the gentleman’s background vocals are just amazing
Bonnie is gorgeous, I love her rock vocal :)
What a voice! Omg
What a great song. Very cool hearing the isolation of the vocals.
I would like to mention as a huge Bonnie Tyler fan, that isn’t a live performance. In those days it was pretty common to lip sync over the studio versions of songs in order to use the best audio quality for television. She did sound different live than in the studio even back then. But she still sounds amazing! It’s just the grandness and technicalities of the song that makes it so incredibly hard to sustain at her studio level in a live setting. However, no auto tune in those days! So the studio one is still 100% her.
The isolated vocal proves this song could work as an Acapella... the duet with Rory Dodd on backup vocals provides the melodic support and contrast
Virtually every Jim Steinman song is an experience - this one in particular - brilliantly performed by Bonnie Tyler
Love her analysis and how she breaks down the music/song etc.
Amazing voice, great song! 🙂
Thanks Beth 😊! I love Bonnie Tyler 💙 ! Never knew she was Welsh ! Love your channel 😍 Ps. More LILIAC please ! Have a wonderful day 😘
This song and it video is a authentic art work !
There’s one live performance by Bonnie singing Total Eclipse of the Heart, that I think you’d be very impressed with. Anyone can watch here on RUclips. It’s Bonnie Tyler performs Total Eclipse of the Heart live on The Grammy’s. This was the year she was nominated for best female pop performance. Unfortunately, she lost to Pat Benatar’s recording of “We Are Young”. Bonnie once described that Grammy performance the most nervous she ever was…so much so, her mouth was so dry during the performance her lips would sometimes stick to her teeth. Isn’t that crazy!?!?! However, despite that inside info from Bonnie, you could never tell by the performance, it was SO IMPRESSIVE!
Kim Carnes had a husky voice as well
Found this a fascinating insight into Bonnie's vocals, I've been a fan of hers ever since I heard this song. It's been a long time since I've watched any videos of this song so it was a delight to see Jim Steinman at the piano. I'm still devasted that Jim passed away this year. I especially loved the musical Tanz Der Vampire where they took some of Jim's songs including this one and reworked them into the musical, to hear them orchestrated is something to behold.
RIP Jim Steinman a truly magical writer
He was the best, god bless him 💔
Her vocals are AMAZING - I've loved them from the first time I heard this song way back when.
I so love this song!!
That's the incredible Rory Dodd singing the "Turn around…"
Nobody cry/sings like Bonnie Tyler. I love it!
When this was a hit this was a massive song for me. So much vocal emotion. So much passion.
It was hot.
Even if she was probably as old as my mum. Actually older, tbh. I might have been 11 and I wasn't the first child.
What a voice❤
This song gives me alot of chills and gives me alot of feeling too
These backing vocals are insane. Make me want to listen to the "Candle in the Wind" isolated vocals. 🤔 Yes, I believe I shall
She’s incredible.
Hmmm... Maybe the damaged voiced matches the damaged heart making something that is less than perfect more than perfect! Loved this video!
That chorus gives me chills, those harmonies against the lead vocal. With total respect and appropriateness intended; Beth Roars diction is just super sexy.
Good analysis of this video
Bonnie also provided the vocals for Rick Wakeman's; Journey to the Centre of the Earth album.
Great vid…. Seeing more of these isolated vocals vids. The first one I saw was one of Jefferson’s Airplane’s (Starship, not sure which one at the time) Grace Slick singing “ White Rabbit”.
I enjoyed this one.
Luv her!
I’ve always liked her voice but the guy singing back has such a beautiful voice…
Jim Steinman told Playbill in a 2002 interview that he wrote “Total Eclipse of the Heart” as a vampire love story. He said its original title was “Vampires in Love.”
It was also included the song in the 1997 musical, Dance of the Vampires.
So happy that he gave up to the vampire story on this one. Hehe!
Isolated only the vocals. That is like the Gold Seal of approval from a vocal coach!
Shades of Bonnie Raitt and Karla Devito, yeah? Really nice work as usual Beth. You rawr!
first time hearing just the vocals goose bumps
I *love* Bonnie Tyler’s voice. Great video as always, Beth!
By the way, have you seen the film Old School? There’s a scene featuring this song that is a must-watch. Soooo funny. 😂
I coming to morrow with my billboard see you then see you then
My favorite reaction of yours, nice choice of source material. Excellent job, if you've never heard her Darby Mills of the Headpins, you should check out Breaking down then something current, strong pipes.
Goosebumps 😍🤤😱
Beth is so adorable. 💙 her comments. Have 3 requests:
1) Chicago.. "Make Me Smile"
2) Withers.. "Ain't No Sunshine"
3) UFO.. "Love To Love"
I've been a fan of Bonnie Tyler's since I first heard her singing It's a Heartache & I have been ever since & own as much as her music as possible, I'm 56 years old & I'll be a Bonnie Tyler fan until I die & even afterwards I'll still be a fan wherever I end up.. 💜💯
Incredible vocal! But let's not forget to give the love to Jim Steinman the songwriter :) I really love hearing the isolated vocals on these older songs.. You can hear the emotion in the voice. Today all of this would be snapped to the note using auto tune :(
If you listen the whole album there are two more: Ian Hunter and Eric Bloom...
in her soul ty ty ty
loved this song the first time I heard it. No cover has come close to the passion she puts in it, they take the soul out of the song.
Bonnie is amazing!! Jim Steinem wrote some amazing songs and I've always been a sucker for the theatrical.
That backup singer is better than a lot of famous singers today. 🙀
She's extraordinary....yes!
She had nodules removed from her vocal cords, and during her rest. She kept talking after she fully healed. Her voice was transformed.
The bass or guitar player singing turn around bright eyes is pretty talented as well
Saludos desde Costa Rica
Seeing her and Steinman in the studio together gives me Phantom of the Opera vibes.
Hello Beth from Canada!! A few years ago I watch the video of this song and I soon as I saw it I kniow she was not American!! I googled her and found out that I was right and that she is Welsh. I lived in Europe for a number of years and and German Scottish and Welsh descent.
muito bom !!!
You have to relax and enjoy it. It is important not let your knowledge about voices take the possibility to enjoy what is great. If you are just thinking about what is "wrong" in her singing you'll miss the fantastic power of it! She sings with her soul, and guess what? She is still singing greatly.
I still remember Lost in France coming out (I know I'm old) the higher vocals were actually sung on the record by Jim Steinman (who wrote the song), Steinman has written some brilliant songs over the years
If you’re referring to the the background vocals on ‘Total Eclipse..’ that was not Jim, it’s Rory Dodd.
