Quite literally, the most underrated singer of the 90s! So glad you finally gave her a listen.
Oh she was rated. We ALL loved her back then. And now ❤️
Jewel is by far one of the most charismatic singers in this world
To say Jewel is incredibly talented in an understatement. Her albums are amazing and her live performances outdo anything she records. See her live if you can.
Understatement? Do you know the meaning of the word? Praising one's talent is not an understatement..
This performance is what happens when a performer has done a song hundreds of thousands of times over the years. It's more fun to play with the structure of the song and see where it can go while still maintaining its core than it is to just play it the way it appears on record. Jewel is one of those artists who has enough range and talent to make this work.
Also, this reminds me in places of the kind of sounds Janis Joplin would create in her performances. Just pure passion coming out from her voice.
It's called Improvisation
Beth, I highly...HIGHLY recommend listening to her first album "Pieces of You". Every song is amazing. Bring tissues.
I second this! Please do more Jewel reactions
"Foolish Games" love it!
Agreed ❤
"Adrian" is probably the saddest song I've ever listened to.
Jewel is just out of this world, it's just indescribable.
Oh my god Beth, how can you have gone this long without Jewel in your life. I highly recommend you do a deep dive and just go on a jewel binge. She's completely amazing as a vocalist. You're awesome ❤️💚☘️
Jewel was the soundtrack of my teenage life. It's so fun to go back and revisit!
Crazy how different this is from the album/radio version, I’ve never heard her live
One of the things I love about her is that she always strives to not perform her songs exactly like on her albums when performing live. Always makes her shows so fun & unique.
I’ve heard her live before, but NEVER like this! Wowee! I guess I need more Jewel in my life!
Woodstock '99 wasn't there.. sadly not😑
It’s always different with her
She shines in her live performances.
I've been a fan of your show for a while but this might be my favorite video you've put out. Your joy is contagious.
This is the very first reaction video anyone has ever done with Jewel!! There are not many that is.
People do NOT understand what they're missing!! My God this lady can SANG! This isn't the best example but it's a start to hear the diversity in her voice.
I was there! She killed it even during rain and an on coming thunderstorm!
Her voice is amazing I've seen her in concert several times! She sounds beautiful on record but she really shines when she performs live!! MORE live Jewel!
I REALLY enjoyed your reactions! Thank you!✌❤🎶😁
Oooooooo the Woodstock 99 performance. I was out there on the field that day. She was so good.
Well that was.....mind blowing. I thought she was just a folkie with a sweet voice and a guitar. That was brave and powerful and over the top in creativity and versatility.
Sounds like you’ve never seen her live then. Far from the MTV crap people were used to seeing.
@@FXMAN66 no I never had that pleasure; would love to.
@jim brewer I'll do that!
You should hear her sing Ave Maria. There is a video on RUclips with an archestra. Incredible!
@@tom7471 omigosh!! That made me cry! I discovered she sang O Holy Night at the same concert. She reaches those high notes effortlessly. Her voice is so ethereal. 😍
I’ve always appreciated Jewel- not only is she vocally gifted, she’s a great writer. Her lyrics are always interesting and full of clever turns of phrase.
And then she does stuff like this, She’s really, really cool.
Her performance of this song from VH1 Storytellers may well be my favorite vocal performance of all time.
Oh nice... I'ma have to go check that out. Thanks 😊
Good to see this performance get reviewed, it makes for great vocal coach material.
As far as Jewel showing off her abilities this is probably the peak, her studio recordings are much more in the pocket.
This version is RADICALLY different than the version that hit the radio in '95. Might you want to compare the two?
My thought as well. She is playing with so many improvisational styles you just don’t get on the studio recordings, starting with that almost reggae rhythm underneath. I would have loved to hear more of this instead of the generic Europop the studio was pushing her towards. Still in the top for that game but a step down from her debut album.
She never sings the same version twice. She wrote this song while busking in California and Mexico, and she explained it actually goes on for a long time. Most of her songs did, but Atlantic had her shorten almost all of them so they'd be radio friendly.
She's so interesting. I've been a fan for years. I highly recommend watching her tell the story about the drug bust dolphin trip, which is 100% real and she has photos with the Mexican Federalé in 1993 to prove it 😂😭
We really liked jam sessions in the 90's.
The same performance as this, her version of "Foolish Games" was incredible.
I've been a fan of her since the 90's, and had no idea she could sing like that. Incredible.
I have never heard her live... Had no idea she was this good of a singer. The impression I had was she had more of a weak/thin voice. Oops.
Is she still around & releasing music? I haven't heard her name in a long time. An old friend of mine was in a movie w/her called Ride with th Devil. Nothing fancy though, he was just a soldier riding w/Quantrell's raiders, not a speaking part. Although, he did eat lunch w/her 1 day
props to the band too. imagine perfecting a song then deciding hey, let's change it COMMMPLEEETELY
She's one of my all time favorite singer-song writers, she's so good playing the acoustic guitar as well, Foolish Games is a great song of hers ❤️ You Were Meant For Me is another outstanding song of hers. Great video!
I've seen Jewel probably 9 or 10 times in concert, she's my favorite artist. She's amazing.
She's my favorite too.
Jewel studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy, about 45 mins from my home here in Northern Michigan. She has returned to play their annual summer concert series a number of times, and I was lucky enough to see her live in 2002 and 2005. She always put on an excellent show, as she and her immensely talented band kept each performance fresh. Thanks, in no small part, to their ability, and willingness/desire to really push the boundaries of each song, with these extended jams, and jazz/blues riffs. It was always clear that they were having fun, which is always infectious, and you walked away knowing that the show you just witnessed was unique to that performance (confirmed by attending multiple shows, with a number of the same songs performed at each).
Honestly, I haven't kept up on her music over the last 14 years, but her first 3 albums were heavily influential and meaningful in my life throughout my teenage years, and honestly, most of it holds up really well (the album This Way remains my favorite).
Thanks for reminding me to revisit these gems. It's been too long.
Jewel is unreal! Her vocals are next level 😮
This is such a weird song to see in a big crowded outdoor space. It feels like something you'd hear in a dark & smokey club. Lotta vibe, lotta groove, lotta feeling of intimacy. I don't think the crowd knows what to do 😅
It certainly doesn't feel like an arena rock song. But it was a song she would have played in a smokey club or coffeehouse before "Pieces Of You" was released, so that feel is part of the song's base. Losing it would lose part of the songs core.
yeah, pretty much. So easy to close your eyes and see her singing in that club that Mellissa Etheridge video "I am the only one" ruclips.net/video/0VTEK17N9Rw/видео.html
totally
If you can make the audience sing meow, you're a legend. She's my favorite, the best among the ladies in late 90s that includes Alanis Morissette, Sarah Mclachlan, Sheryl Crow and others. You were meant for me and Hands, geat songs - only kindness matters.
Jewel is and always will be my favorite. She's incredibly talented and absolutely beautiful.
She was absolutely amazing completely stole the show
Jewel is one of the most underrated female singers imho. So sad she isn‘t featured more often. Never saw her live, unfortunately. So glad you made that reaction! While she is a tremendously good singer, I specially like her songs also for the lyrics that are usually always very meaningful or metaphorical. (best line from „down so long“: „The wind blows cold when you reach the top“) And at the same time, I like the „attitude“ in her voice. And the „solo“ in the end is crazy!
I was so excited when I saw this and clicked so quick. I was very lucky to see Jewel live in the Apollo, Manchester. It's the only gig I've been to where I was treated to folk, yodel, rock and pop from the same artist. I was 3 rows from the front so great view.
She'll sing the same song 10 different ways and more so each gig you see her at will be a totally different concert.
My first reaction video I saw of yours was of Sigrid Dynamite acoustic and that is still my all time fav reaction video from anyone.
I have repeatedly watched it many times because I have loved your expert critique. Your oooh at the beginning and the "she's dynamite alright" topped it all off !! Your reactions to Jewel are a close second.
Check out Jewel and Kelly Clarkson on Kelly's show singing Foolish Games (just for the enjoyment of it Lol).
Jewel is not only a singer, but also an artist who uses voice! Her singing ability is something few people can have! She can sing all kinds of different styles of music! And her vocal range is very broad! I like her singing best. Blues and rock scream! Of course, there are sweet girly voices like candy
Jewel is simply stunning.
I've seen Jewel live three times, including on the tour from whence this performance came from. I can say without hyperbole that she can sing the phonebook and make it sound like it was written by Cole Porter. She is one of, if not THE most versatile vocalists I have her heard heard her sing Ave Maria and rowdy rock n roll in one set.
She still doing stuff. She released a new album about a year ago, and does loads of charity work.
Finally she's getting the recognition she deserves... she is a beautiful vocal monster!
Wow what an Arsenal of tools she has at her disposal. That was a fantastic performance.
Thank you for this pick. I haven't listened to her music in years.
Just an incredible voice and talent. I recommend Paula Cole as another artist who is not afraid to “make noise” with her voice.
I really hope there is a big ol' bear wandering somewhere out there in the woods, grumpy and thinking "why so much space in my mouth?"
Me too, lordofentropy. Me too.
OK! This performance is from Woodstock 99!
...where Metallica was Headlining on Saturday!
Organized for just cashing out the people!
...a friend told me so far; we are from Vienna/Austria.
We are not better in Nickelsdorf at NOVA ROCK, but you have free water and beer for 1€!
Even more amazing considering the oppressive heat that day - above 100 °F (38 °C)!
Always loved jewel songs but never saw her "Live"...OMG!!!!!😯
Beth, I am glad you uploaded this and gave your opinion! Jewel is a vocalist dynamo! I heard another 'improvisational' version of this song when she was relatively new (known). I think it was from a performance on Austin City Limits and I was completely blown away. Then there is the video on RUclips (not the best quality) of her singing Ave Maria. Oh my! What talent!
I'm so glad I found her. Love her work!
You should most definitely listen to more from Jewel. She's another of those singers that can't be pinned down to a specific genre. She's also an author and an actress. I just finished watching 3 movies with her as the lead character on The Hallmark Channel. Together they're called 'The Fixer Upper' Series. And NO it's not a reality series but mystery/whodunit. She plays a general contractor that works on houses and drives a pickup truck. But, Her music is wonderful, amazing and she has this really great attitude with a million stories to tell to a crowd at a concert. Oh, and it's her family on the Discovery Channel program: Alaska: The Last Frontier.
I was fortunate enough to see Jewel in concert in New Zealand after the release of her 2nd album. Still one of the best shows i've been too. SHe has a stunning sound live truly feels her music. Thanks for the share :)
Thanks for this. I had heard Jewel when this song came out however many years ago, BUT I never realised she had such a diverse range of styles. Loved it and now will have to check her out again.
I absolutely LOVE Jewel. I've been a huge fan ever since I heard her for the first time. She had a sound that I instantly loved and over the years she's shown just how much of an incredible singer she is. She's done pop, country, folk, and a bunch of other genres in her music over the years.
I really hope you check out more from her. I see very few reactions to her which is a shame with how talented she is.
She was just on the joe rogan podcast a few days ago and her life story there was incredible! Best podcast ive ever seen, which is what brings me here! So i think you might get a surge in views because of it! Ive heard of her also but didnt know much about her either!
One word for this vocal performance and that word is 'clinic'. This is an absolute vocal clinic.
I LOVE Jewel. I've seen her a few times and she's so amazing live. She has an incredibly versatile voice!
Jewel has to be one of the greatest female singers of all time. Shes in the league of Carry, Joplin and the like. Her skill and talent is just peak.
I love Jewel-she is a national treasure. She was the first person I ever saw in concert, as a kid. She closed the show by yodeling. I"ll never forget it. Interesting guitar player too, but that voice is unmistakable. Her vocal control has always been impressive.
So amazingly different from the original!! Love how she plays with her songs and they evolve every time she performs.
Channeled some Janice Joplin in this version. 👍
I recommend you watch the jre podcast with jewel. She elaborates on her whole life and is one of the most unbreakable people ever. She's been through so much and still sees the positive.
"Carnivore" live at Barnes & Noble is such a beautiful performance of hers
I saw Jewel once on the Spirit world tour. Oh. My. God. She can belt out a tune like nobody’s business!
I got to see her perform ‘Whole Lotta Love’ with the Foo Fighters in Phoenix once, it was great.
Please, do is all a favor, react to Jewel at the Meyerson Symphony Center singing 1000 miles away!
I absolutely love Jewel. She is just so talented. Odd that this would be the performance you would study.
Jewel live is magical ! This is a jewel classic ... you should check out her more recent versions and her new album free-wheeling woman 🥰
I had the same reaction as you, Beth. I really liked Jewel's folky/pop hits in the 90s and thought she was talented, but I'd never seen this side of her before this video - which blew me away! Gobsmackingly great! P.S. Your reactions are always delightful, too.
Jewel has been and will always be my favorite singer.
I love the Reggae arrangement, and her voice is ethereal.
She is that kind of artist whom could play at Woodstock, then going to a bar, ask for a Jewel karaoke song and kill it again.
Karen back to the stage please
Britanny Slayes did something almost exactly like that. she did a two hour concert then went to a karaoke bar, had a few drinks and then sang Queensryche " Queen of the Ryche" just for fun.
Great to see a video on Jewel, another beneficiary of the Jools Holland show. I saw her in Bristol in 98, a unique show including some story time segments.
Goodbye Alice in Wonderland is my morning record.
Jewel is underrated as both a songwriter and vocalist. Thanks so much for reacting to this performance.
Foolish Games is my favourite song by her. I highly recommend it! 💕
You Were Meant For Me for me.....
Great song, probably my favourite song of hers too. In fact, it is one of my favourite songs full stop.
@@garymaidman625 definitely, there's something very magical and haunting about it 💕
I always think Dido is the British version of Jewel, who is the American version of Kate Bush. They are all cut from the same cloth.
@@garymaidman625 yeah, Dido definitely has a bit of that yodel tone to her voice. 💕
Jewels is one of a kind. I love her live performances. There is not a song that she has written and performed that I have not loved or been moved by.
I always enjoyed Jewel.. partly because I remember seeing her in a coffee shop in Poway, and my uncle actually played with her once. she was a phenomenal singer then as well.
Thanks Beth! I never saw this very talented side of her before! And this was performed in my home town at Woodstock 99 (in Rome New York.)
You're saying this is 20 years old? Oh my-
@@jericoba 22!
@@joemercury100 Thanks, Joe... :)
Would love to see you react to Tori Amos "Winter" live in Montreux 91/92
I was a longtime fan of Jewel, but just came across this live performance two weeks ago... blew me away several times. I admit, I was looking forward to seeing your reaction as a singer/voice coach. It is full of so many surprises and delights.... She's competing in the American Song Contest (today in fact); would be interesting to see how her singing style has changed.
Jewel is incredible. Please investigate more, Beth.
It's so nice to see someone other than me get a kick out of this performance.
Jewel is a literal queen. Her poetry is amazing as well.
Jewel is considered one of the best vocalist out there: she has so much variety to the sounds she can make and so many nuances available to her! She is not nearly close to being recognized enough on a grander scale, even though I'm sure a good selection of people has grown up with her. I learn most of my singing as a teenager trying to mimic her, but I'll never pretend to have her epic range!!! Amazing singer!
Her acting in Ang Lee's "Ride With the Devil" was really good, imo. Awesome film.
I feel lucky to have seen her early on, right after her debut album came out, before she made it big. She was coming around to different record stores in different markets, and then they set her up with "residencies" in different coffeehouses around the country, she would have a set tour from week to week, and she played at a coffeehouse here in Columbus that no longer exists, I saw her both times she was there prior to her getting picked up to open for Peter Murphy on tour - she was such a fabulous performer when it was just her and her guitar, and she would of course do her full-on yodeling too. And she was doing all of the stuff in the original fashion, not this bluesy style, which is fine, I just prefer the original style... She was also just the sweetest to talk to... either she was kind of a loopy person, or, more likely, she was a little, ahem, inebriated, haha. She was talking to me and she literally reached out and grabbed one of my earlobes and told me I had the nicest earlobes... that was, to say, a little strange haha. But very much a strange and personal experience with someone who went on to much fame and acclaim, lol.
I've known and listened to her studio stuff for 26 years and had no idea she could sing like that, so no worries Beth. Lol.
Holy Frig!!! That was an AMAZING performance!!! I've loved Jewel for years but this Live Performance was Astounding! HOLY SMOKES!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE
Never heard of this artist bevor and the scatting is wonderful! 😊
If you've never heard it, watch Water is Wide from Lilith Fair with The Indigo Girls, Jewel and Sarah McLachlan - four stunning voices performing together.
Never have I ever felt so crushed and inspired.
Jewel often uses her voice like a prog rock band uses their instruments.
Stylistically changing beats, tempo, even genre, from one beat to the next.
Never in an off-putting way, and always pulling you deeper into the music.
I’ve seen her live once, but that was in the 90’s. I haven’t listened to her in a long time, but this is a nice memory refresher. She’s very soulful and I also like the mix of influences she has.
Jewel was so dope when this album came out. She still is amazing. The 90’s where the best decade for music in my opinion. I graduated high school in 1995 and all genres of music where so good. From Alternative to Hip Hop to Metal. Nirvana,STP,Alice in Chains,Soundgarden,Metallica,Megadeth,Slayer,Sepultura,2Pac,Biggie,Snoop,Icecube,DR. DRE,NWA, Eazy,Ghetto Boys,Nas,Jay-Z,Eminem and the list goes on and on. Such a great decade.
She can jodeling for sure, shes from Alaska from the Kiltcher farm, her grandpa moved to alaska from switzeland,if you guys see the series Alaska the last frontier,Jewels dad is the old man whos jodeling and plays guitar,Jewel also plays guitar,i think this song comes out in 1995 when she moved to the US to live with her mom,but today i think she almost lives in Alaska fulltime
She is so beautiful and has such an equally beautiful dynamic voice. Where has she been for the last few years?
She has her own jewellery making business these days 'Songlines by Jewel'
Well that just kept getting better and better
Not too shabby considering she was 25 at the time - not too many years removed from her homesteading childhood in Alaska.
Her voice is even better now. check out foolish games 2020 live
This was everywhere in the 90s and it was played to death and I always liked it but couldn't listen to it for a long time. Heard it a few years ago and I was just so blown away. Total masterpiece of a song and she is so talented. One of my my favorite tunes ever!
Jewel is so unique… love her and her music..
Great vocal coach review .. enjoyed watching!
I've seen her live a couple of times - including one of her first tours. Her vocal talent absolutely blew me away!
This whole concert is amazing!!!
Definitly would like to some of your other reactions to some other of her songs. One of my favorites is Adrien. She also did Undercover Karaoke for Funny or Die.
Undercover karaoke is one of the best music videos online. The concept, the amazing singing, and the genuine crowd reactions, are all great.
As a kid she absolutely was my idol and my vocal inspiration growing up. I spent YEARS, learning how to imitate her sound.
One of my favorite singer of all time
Her first hit was "You Were Meant For Me", that's when we fell in love with her voice.(1996)
I've always had a crush on Jewell in every way. A genuine soul. I'd love you to hear "Uninvited" by Alanis Morrissette.
i have always loved Jewel. I nothing about music or voice but have always said that she treats her voice like another instrument in the song the way few singers every do
Thank you for loving one of my favorite singers!
