To me, the most beautiful thing in this song is about the name and the connection with the lyrics. Oceano means, quite obviously, ocean in Portuguese. But with the concept and the lyrics, without changing anything, he turns a noun (oceano) into a verb. He sings: "Você desagua em mim e eu oceano", which would roughly translate to "You flow into me and I ocean it". Implying a concept of you come with your baggage, your fears, your dream and hopes and I absorb it and turn it part of myself. That's why he continues with "E esqueço que amar é quase uma dor", again roughly translated to "and I forget that loving is almost a pain (or painful)", completed by "só sei viver se for por você", I can only live if it's for (or by, or through) you. Djavan really is one of the greatest in Brazil. A whole vibe musically and quite a lyricist!

One interesting thing about Portuguese is that our nasal sounds are not the same as those in many other languages, which use only the nose for airflow. In Portuguese, we use BOTH the mouth and the nose at the same time. These are called nasal vowels, and they're one of the reasons many foreigners find the Brazilian accent challenging. Keep up the good work! I also got teary watching you get teary lol :)
Steve wonder and Djavan met eachother in LA , when they both were recording their albuns . Steve was so mesmerized by Djavan’s music , that he offered to play the harmonica for a song, at Djavan’s album ( the song is called Samurai )
A Brazilian here. I would like to ask you to react to (in my opinion) the greatest voice in Brazilian music, Milton Nascimento with the song Travessia, he is a great artist who I think should have more recognition
Beth, I recently learned about the story behind "Oceano" through a short by Djavan. While he was recording in the USA, his daughter called to discuss a song he had left among his abandoned tracks. Djavan mentioned that he has many clippings of discarded songs, but he never throws them away. The song that piqued his daughter's interest was "Oceano," which he had set aside five years prior to the phone call. He asked her to play the song for him over the phone, and he said, "This song is really beautiful!" When he returned to Brazil, he completed "Oceano," which went on to become a huge success.

Djavan is a Brazilian titan. There is a song of his called Linha do Equador (Equator Line) that truly deserves your comments. Thank you for doing this. Please accept my big Brazilian hug 😊
The thing that caught my attention the most in this song is the difference in rhythmic movements. The song is performed in ternary time and is barely noticeable. It is obviously not a waltz. The beat of the lyrics, however, is in binary time. This is brilliant! The waves of the ocean are clearly represented here, carrying the meaning of the words: “you flow into me and I, ocean, forget that loving is almost a pain”. In short: like something precious carried by the waves, the love sung is not always Cartesian, one speaks binary and the other hears ternary. Djavan is a machine for creating poetry.
Girl, hearing you talk about this masterpiece made me emotional. I'm Brazilian and I loved the way you described the song and the people here. Thank you!
As a brasilian myself i felt very happy to see Djavan here. He is one of the most talented brasilian singers of all time. His ability to translate love into a song is awesome. Great vid!
I'm from Maceió :) My family listened to his music a lot when I was younger. His music is very nostalgic to me and it makes me quite proud that i was born in the same city as such an amazing musician
Ocean is a classic! Everyone, from 8 years old to 80, knows the lyrics to this song. Fleur de Lís is not a mystery. It's just a song that talks about a love that ended, but to understand exactly, it's important to know the symbolism he applies in the composition. These are two beautiful songs! I loved the reaction!
Nice reacts! You always have something interesting to add and teach us. One of the greatest Italian singers, Loredana Bertè, has a whole album with Djavan songs in Italian (few Brazilians know that). There are lots of things in common between Brazilian and Italian music.
I love seeing the tears come spontaneously to your eyes, Beth! So truly moved by people's (beautiful) voices... Such an authentic voice listener (and coach)... Greetings from Brazil...!
Interesting. As a Brazilian, I've heard this song many times. The depth of your analysis really made me see it in a different way. Congratulations, very cool!

Its great to see you reacting to Brazilian singers, there are so many. Its a big jump from King Diamond to Djavan. I had the pleasure of seeing Djavan live during his "Ao Vivo" tour. He came and played a tiny venue in Atlanta GA. We were about 10 feet away from him on stage. His show breaks down to him alone on acoustic in the middle. It was so intimate, one of my friends was singing harmony and Djavan heard him and complemented him after the song. Afterwards I was able to meet Djavan backstage, what a wonderful guy. He asked me, "how do you know of me in America?". I told him by pure luck. If you want to continue in your venture into Brazilian singers, check out Ney Matogrosso, someone very unusually talented. Milton Nascimento and his crazy falsetto. On the ladies side, Elis Regina....pure passion.
I saw a video from some producer saying that he came on stage right after some pop superstar, and djavan was concerned that he was going with only a guitar. The producer said it was perfect to break that excitment with his calm. And it was perfect

Excellent! Djavan plays with words, so sometimes it's not easy to translate his song lyrics into English. Note that he uses few rhymes and focuses on the balance of the syllables. These lyrics are among the most beautiful he has ever composed.

wow Beth. you really get it; the emotion, the intention and the communication behind his music.
2:06 The harmonies in Brazilian music from (roughly) the 50s-90s is what sets it apart, it's well worth getting to know. Cheers 🇧🇷😘
Djavan é a perfeição, amo demais.
Happens to be my favorite Brazilian singer. You should delve into his music. Absolutely unique.
"You water down over me / And I ocean" ... such a poetic imagery
Yeah it's poestry
...and I, ocean, forget that to be in love is almost a pain. I, only, know, live, if, it's, for ... Yoooooouuuu
💜
Even though I'm a die-hard metalhead, I love Djavan, especially because of the incredible harmonies and melodies he creates. Immense talent indeed.
We brazilians love this song. Thank you for such a heartfelt reaction. You are amazing.
Loved your reaction!
Djavan is an iconic singer for us Brazilians!
I didn't know that. I assumed he was bahiano, I guess. So many musicians are from there
Ansioso pra assistir. Reaja depois a Milton Nascimento ao Vivo, cantando Clube da Esquina N° 2 e Travessia ao Vivo. É um clássico da MPB
❤❤❤❤❤
Clube da esquina n. 2 is wonderful
ruclips.net/video/V5Qq9rA2Hio/видео.htmlsi=w0MkDa_uKDTCVlcp I really like this one 🎉
I really prefer "To Lennon and McCartney" by Milton Nascimento, especially considering the lyrics
It's worth learning Portuguese to be able to understand and feel Djavan's lyrics
Nice reacts! You always have something interesting to add and teach us. One of the greatest Italian singers, Loredana Bertè, has a whole album with Djavan songs in Italian (few Brazilians know that). There are lots of things in common between Brazilian and Italian music.
Obrigado pela recomendação!
I love seeing the tears come spontaneously to your eyes, Beth! So truly moved by people's (beautiful) voices... Such an authentic voice listener (and coach)... Greetings from Brazil...!
He is very poetic. His lyrics are out of this world.
Brazilians are incredible with melodies and lyrics❤
I always feels very proud for having great and talented singers and musicians in our country, like djavan❤
Interesting. As a Brazilian, I've heard this song many times. The depth of your analysis really made me see it in a different way. Congratulations, very cool!
This is one of my favorite songs of all time! Absolutly love it! Djavan is a great singer and composer ❤
@bethroars, that crack is actually even more powerful, because that quote is like a plea, so it justs adds a lot of emotion into it
You've got to listen to Milton Nascimento. He is considered one of our greatest voices.
Up
Up. Indeed!
Travessia by Milton Nascimento.
He was elected the best male voice in Brazil about a decade ago.

The first time I cried to a song was listening to this exact version many years ago. Djavan is the greatest of all musicians
Beth, por onde você andava? Suas análises eram ótimas. Aprendiamos. Bom ter você, de novo, por aqui. Ótimo vídeo!
She did react to Elis Regina a while ago. Simply awsome!
He makes me cry. Every Single Time. Amo Djavan.
I love your reactions to Brazilian music, always featuring the best artists!
From Brazil 🇧🇷
another crazy one by Djavan is "Faltando um pedaço" especially the live version at latin grammy awards, always brings me the best of emotions.
I saw a video from some producer saying that he came on stage right after some pop superstar, and djavan was concerned that he was going with only a guitar. The producer said it was perfect to break that excitment with his calm. And it was perfect
Beautiful to see a professional that loves her job this much! And thanks for showing a bit of our culture 🥺
Portuguese is a very complex language. You’re doing a Marvelous job uncovering our jewels in music. Love you for that and for being so emotional while doing this detailed description. God Bless
To watch Djavan live, in front of me, singing this song, was one of the great moments of my life. Just hypnotizing emotion and the most beautiful words and sounds. Thanks for reacting to this, Beth!
Excellent! Djavan plays with words, so sometimes it's not easy to translate his song lyrics into English. Note that he uses few rhymes and focuses on the balance of the syllables. These lyrics are among the most beautiful he has ever composed.
First, I loved your album Fable, very good work!!
Second, Djavan is a national treasure for sure, good song choice.
"Você deságua em mim e eu oceano" is maybe the most poetic verse of Brazilian Music. And we have a lot of poetic verses.
What a masterpiece, never thought of the final piece of the words being like the waves.. great video
Beth, adoro te ver analisando os cantores brasileiros. Amo Djavan❤
Fantástico video, Beth. Thanks. I'm from Brazil, I love Djavan, and I found your analysis so briliant, so full of emotion. Awesome.
You should react to "Tribalistas - Vilarejo" live version (ao vivo) from 2019. It's a super group formed by Marisa Monte, Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes. Antunes has a deep voice, you would love it. Give it a try!
boa
Bem lembrado.

I totally understand you and I feel lucky finding this channel, that's what makes life wonderful❤!
Djavan is all about his uniqueness and his hability to create this emotional atmosphere. As a Brazilian listener, I cannot listen to Djavan with my ears but with my heart. He's so beyond techniques and this video amazed me because I would never think of Djavan in these terms. Kudos to you, Beth.
I'd suggest you to listen to Milton Nascimento, another soulful musician and a power of nature!
Sorry by any possible written mistakes, I am a proud Brazilian trying to communicate with Beth's audience.
Djavan é sentimento genuíno. Thanks Beth ❤
It’s amazing to see how you lovely react his performance. Thanks for bringing this MPB classic.
So beautiful!!! I love him! We are fellow countrymen from Maceió! ❤❤❤
Bom dia!
Djavan is very respected here in Brazil.
I went to a Djavan concert whilst sick once, and sang my heart out (and him live is soooo good). Left there not sick anymore. I swear.
Olá, do Brasil, Beth!!!
Hello from Brazil, Beth! Thank you so much for featuring our amazing Djavan! I cried as I watched your eyes fill with tears in the first minute of this song. That is what he causes in us! An amazing poet, singer, musician and artist. Brazil loves Djavan so much! I am enjoying your videos! Thank you so much for being so lovely with your brazilian audience! Love you, girl!
This is an amazing reaction ❤
A big hug from Brazil 🇧🇷 🙏🏻
Love your videos Beth. I always learn a lot from your analyses. Regards from Brazil
This is the song my mom walked down the isle to. It's been since referred in my family as my parents' wedding song and later was also my brother's wedding song. It is so emotional to me and it really represents this bond between my family members. I absolutely love Djavan
