I've seen Bethânia live once and it was outstanding. She's known here in Brazil for having developed her own performing style, which combines a musical concert with more theatrical elements, interweaving songs, poetry and spoken word to create narrative. It's pretty amazing to witness. In this video she’s just doing two individual songs as an encore. One great song of hers for you to watch would be "Olhos nos Olhos". Maria Bethania is the sister of another beautiful Brazilian singer, Caetano Veloso. Never seen her live (I saw Caetano here in Italy two times and another one in Brazil). She has a beautiful song with Nina Simone titled "Ready to sing (Pronta pra cantar)", which I suggest for you to analyse, those two voices are so different yet they work beautifully together. Maria Bethania is not a singer, in Brazil. She's a legend, together with a few others, like Gal Costa (if you don't know her, you should 😉), they're old now but heck are they good! About the language... I speak Brazilian Portuguese fluently, and I can tell you the lyrics of these singers are so beautiful they're high level poetry. Last Sunday I was in Maria Bethânia and Caetano’s concert here in São Paulo, Brazil. Caetano is her brother, and both singers are the biggest in Brazil. It’s not only about the voice, but the way that they put straight and emotion in their songs. Watch this concert was the most beautiful experience that I’ve ever had. She's not just a singer with a unique, warm and sincere voice, she's an entity, a force of nature, someone that all Brazilians revere! Caetano Veloso's younger sister has already broken several record sales records (in the 70s she was the first Brazilian female singer to sell more than 1 million copies of records) and pleases fans of all generations. It's no wonder that Maria Bethânia's best songs are always played at parties, movies, soap operas and TV shows. Bethânia doesn't follow trends; she's timeless. Her talent wasn't just in her voice, but also in the political and social struggle that she supported with the lyrics of the songs she chose to sing. For her, the stage is a sacred place, and she usually sings barefoot, because according to her: "Bare feet are a sign of respect, of devotion." Bethânia, who had performed on renowned stages such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Olympia in Paris, did not want to pursue a musical career like Caetano, her older brother. Her dream was to act in theater and, to achieve it, she moved to Salvador in 1960. At the age of 14, living in the state capital, Bethânia began studying at the Theater School of the Federal University of Bahia. In 1963, Caetano Veloso was invited to compose the soundtrack for the play Boca de Ouro, by Nélson Rodrigues. Her brother then asked her to perform the tracks on stage. Yes. She sings as if she's talking. Also: the speed of the words. She enounces every word and yet manages to fit them all in without losing the melody. And that is an impressive amount of long words shot at speed. Absolutely fantastic.
The two firsts songs she sang are classic from Gonzaguinha: "Não Dá Mais Pra Segurar" (also know as "Explode Coração") and "O que é, o que é", the last one specially is sang even today (Gonzaguinha died on 80s) and O que é, O que é is like a second national Anthem.. though several others songs here are like this LOL.. we love songs, and our composers. Gonzaguinha had a marvelous carrer both as composer and singer, he was also son of Luiz Gonzaga who was a HUGE composer and singer from Northeast region of Brazil, with songs who iconic for the region and the country, like Asa Branca, Xote das Meninas, Saviá (Sabiá from Gonzaguinha is one thing... Sabiá from Chico Buarque and Tom Jobim, another thing.. Sabiá is the name of a bird we have here, and, in Tupi - indigenous language - means "The One Who Prays a lot" because he sings a lot... beautifull singer, by the way) and Vida de Viajante.

it's actually a pout-pourri of two songs: bethânia begins with "não dá mais pra segurar", pauses and goes in media res with "o que é, o que é", omitting the first two verses . these are two brazilian classics composed by a well known singer and songwriter from the 70s and 80s, gonzaguinha, who tragically passed away in a car accident at the beginning of the 90s. and you're absolutely right, she's royalty within brazilian music, there's no contest on her. and if you thought that she was a goddess, just hear her singing "pantanal". she embodied pachamama, the mother goddess, nut, nzambici, gaia, amaterasu, lakshmi, guanyin, you name it, while singing this song.

She's closer to the ending of a life journey than to the beginning. She's royalty. She, her brother (Caetano Veloso) and their friends Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa (RIP) used to sing together in a project as THE DOCES BÁRBAROS (The Gentle Barbarians). Everything they produced together and apart is worthy checking out, but you will need a couple months to check their body of work in their entirety. And you have to do it DAILY! It's a commitment! Now you're committed to them, and to us Brazilians, too. And we're clingy! So beware of this and enjoy the journey!

I've seen Bethânia live once and it was outstanding. She's known here in Brazil for having developed her own performing style, which combines a musical concert with more theatrical elements, interweaving songs, poetry and spoken word to create narrative. It's pretty amazing to witness. In this video she’s just doing two individual songs as an encore.
One great song of hers for you to watch would be "Olhos nos Olhos". Great singing and great storytelling.

Maria Bethania is the sister of another beautiful Brazilian singer, Caetano Veloso. Never seen her live (I saw Caetano here in Italy two times and another one in Brazil). She has a beautiful song with Nina Simone titled "Ready to sing (Pronta pra cantar)", which I suggest for you to analyse, those two voices are so different yet they work beautifully together.
Maria Bethania is not a singer, in Brazil. She's a legend, together with a few others, like Gal Costa (if you don't know her, you should 😉), they're old now but heck are they good!
About the language... I speak Brazilian Portuguese fluently, and I can tell you the lyrics of these singers are so beautiful they're high level poetry.
It's a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL rabbit hole to get lost into. To know the language would make it even better, but one can't have it all, can one? 🙂

And I've been knowing this for a long time because my mother took me along with her to a Bethânia's show some 40 years ago, when I was a teenager, and I loved every single second of that.

You listened two songs, the second onde, as samba, is from Gonzaguinha, son of Luis Gonzaga, another legend. They all are from Northeast of Brazil and we can hear their accent. Last Sunday I was in Maria Bethânia and Caetano’s concert here in São Paulo, Brazil. Caetano is her brother, and both singers are the biggest in Brazil. It’s not only about the voice, but the way that they put straight and emotion in their songs. Watch this concert was the most beautiful experience that I’ve ever had. It’ hypnotizing, sweet and touching. If you are not portuguese speaker but you have curiosity about our music and language, I suggest start with Maria Bethânia and Caetano’s songs.

She's not just a singer with a unique, warm and sincere voice, she's an entity, a force of nature, someone that all Brazilians revere! Caetano Veloso's younger sister has already broken several record sales records (in the 70s she was the first Brazilian female singer to sell more than 1 million copies of records) and pleases fans of all generations. It's no wonder that Maria Bethânia's best songs are always played at parties, movies, soap operas and TV shows. Bethânia doesn't follow trends; she's timeless. Her talent wasn't just in her voice, but also in the political and social struggle that she supported with the lyrics of the songs she chose to sing. For her, the stage is a sacred place, and she usually sings barefoot, because according to her: "Bare feet are a sign of respect, of devotion." Bethânia, who had performed on renowned stages such as Carnegie Hall in New York and the Olympia in Paris, did not want to pursue a musical career like Caetano, her older brother. Her dream was to act in theater and, to achieve it, she moved to Salvador in 1960. At the age of 14, living in the state capital, Bethânia began studying at the Theater School of the Federal University of Bahia. In 1963, Caetano Veloso was invited to compose the soundtrack for the play Boca de Ouro, by Nélson Rodrigues. Her brother then asked her to perform the tracks on stage. At that time, Caetano and Bethânia met other aspiring musicians, such as Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa. Together with them, a year later, they premiered the play Nós, Por Exemplo, which had a great impact. The official date of Maria Bethânia's career as a singer is February 13, 1965, when she replaced Nara Leão in the play Opinião, in Rio de Janeiro. They had met a few years earlier, in Salvador. When she performed in place of the bossa nova muse, all eyes turned to the newly emerging singer from Bahia. One of the songs she performed, Carcará, ended up becoming a classic in her career.

Bethania is sensational. Pure, crystal clean, powerful, voice, no need for acrobatics here. I love how you said her name in perfect Portuguese here.
The two firsts songs she sang are classic from Gonzaguinha: "Não Dá Mais Pra Segurar" (also know as "Explode Coração") and "O que é, o que é", the last one specially is sang even today (Gonzaguinha died on 80s) and O que é, O que é is like a second national Anthem.. though several others songs here are like this LOL.. we love songs, and our composers. Gonzaguinha had a marvelous carrer both as composer and singer, he was also son of Luiz Gonzaga who was a HUGE composer and singer from Northeast region of Brazil, with songs who iconic for the region and the country, like Asa Branca, Xote das Meninas, Saviá (Sabiá from Gonzaguinha is one thing... Sabiá from Chico Buarque and Tom Jobim, another thing.. Sabiá is the name of a bird we have here, and, in Tupi - indigenous language - means "The One Who Prays a lot" because he sings a lot... beautifull singer, by the way) and Vida de Viajante.

I think she was expecting the crownd sing whit her or sing by her in some parts, she did like "messed" the music (the second one mostly... look for O Que É O Que É with Gonzaguinha here on youtube, you will understand.. she lost some lyrics AND out of timing a few times BUT still confident and conducting the show with maestry... point for her)... so, for a better play of her, live, search on youtube RECONVEXO with maria Bethânia, or "Fera Ferida", or "As Canções Que Você Fez Pra Mim"... she is one amazing singer, her albums are awesome... She was to make a show with her brother Caetano Veloso, also good singer and amazing composer (Maria almost doesnt compose, she is mainly a singer) here in São Paulo this week, it was promissing to be awesome.. I hope so.

it's actually a pout-pourri of two songs: bethânia begins with "não dá mais pra segurar", pauses and goes in media res with "o que é, o que é", omitting the first two verses . these are two brazilian classics composed by a well known singer and songwriter from the 70s and 80s, gonzaguinha, who tragically passed away in a car accident at the beginning of the 90s.
and you're absolutely right, she's royalty within brazilian music, there's no contest on her. and if you thought that she was a goddess, just hear her singing "pantanal". she embodied pachamama, the mother goddess, nut, nzambici, gaia, amaterasu, lakshmi, guanyin, you name it, while singing this song.

She, her brother (Caetano Veloso) and their friends Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa (RIP) used to sing together in a project as THE DOCES BÁRBAROS (The Gentle Barbarians). Everything they produced together and apart is worthy checking out, but you will need a couple months to check their body of work in their entirety. And you have to do it DAILY! It's a commitment!
