Brad & Lex, her "You Were Meant For Me" and "Foolish Games" are next for you!!
foolish games was the first song I heard and made me like her in the 90s
Foolish Games, but make sure it's the radio edit!!
I forgot about Foolish Games!
The whole Pieces of Me album tbh. Fucking amazing
You were meant for me is a good introduction to her song or new artist for new listeners
Foolish Games i wouldnt say underrated song but it's beautiful sang soo yea I agree but also Hands is a good song too
Standing Still is a must
Jewel was a folk singer and yodeler before she was a popstar, IIRC. That "sound" that's confounding you is the yodeling part.
She also trained in Opera so I think that also comes through. I remember listening to this a dozen times in a row after I first heard it.
I'm a 90's kid, and I can relate - Brad is shook! We all were when Jewel hit the scene.
she is also the actual daughter of the patriarch of the Kilner clan from the Alaskan homesteader show.
@@jerryadams6799 Kilcher ..
@@tonguetiedtwistd thanks. old memory.
jewel is known for yodeling This is one thing I miss about the ' 90s there were alot of different musical styles and sounds that became mainstream and the popularity of alot of these artists like Jewel that grew organically through fans supporting them by going to there shows and requesting there songs on the Radio.
The 90s were for sure about more than grunge. 1991 alone has like 20 mega albums. And, yeah...female singer-songwriters in particular started getting play, like Sarah McLachlan (wish they'd do "Building a Mystery"), Lisa Loeb, juliana Hatfield, Tori Amos, Liz Phair, and on and on...
@@dougman23 Dee Eye that's true Grunge was just a small part of it but there were just as many female singers and female lead bands as much as there male counterparts in the '90s.
Love the hear her and her DAD together yodeling.
Jewels vocal range is off the charts. Trying to keep up with a woman that could hypnotize you with that voice. Reason why Jewels songs come on radio and instantly know who it is.
@@Theckonestrohthat's the truth you knew the artists when you heard them on the radio i really do miss that time in the early to mid ' 90s
I miss the 90s when genres got tossed out the window and we got Jewel, Alanis Morrisette, Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow along with White Zombie. ✌❤🇨🇦
This is a really great observation and description of 90's music.
Interesting line up here!!!
yeah, the 90s were GREAT!!!!
And Bjork
And Shawn Colvin and Meredith Brooks
And Natalie Imbruglia, and Fiona Apple, The Cardigans...
SO enjoying Brad's discovery of 90's female singer-songwriters! Let's get this man in a time machine and take him to Lilith Fair!! lol
Get Lex a crystal, some patchouli and take her along!
Agreed!!
They still need to react to Sarah McLachlan.
@@GeorgeTropicana
Brad would’ve had a blast at Lilith Fair, lol
You gave a really interesting reaction to Jewel. When you talk about multiple voices, mostly you are talking about her yodeling. Most singers use a “head” voice and a “chest “ voice. Most singers use the “head” voice to hit higher notes and the “chest” voice to hit the lower ones. Jewel is an expert at transitioning between the two and also uses it to highlight the rhythm. Her grandfather moved to Alaska from Norway and sang many traditional Scandinavian songs using yodeling so she comes by it naturally. I think she is great and so underrated. Great choice!
That's the thing I love about Jewel and it's what I think makes her so unique! She's not afraid to play around with her voice - and not in a egotistical, "look at what my voice can do", show-off kind of way that several talented vocalists are guilty of doing, but in free-spirited, open ego-free kind of way. Where it's complete expressiveness of oneself over uniformity, or conformity if you want to look at it that way. ;) She'll even tease going off-key and outright scream a line if she feels it that way at any given time. Her total expression of herself will not be denied! And somehow doing all that, she still maintains 100% musicality. And I just love that about her! :)
Brad!!! Have you seen Jewel? Not only can she sing, but she's absolutely beautiful as well
Agreed! I have had a thing for her forever!
Dude fell in love IMMEDIATELY (just like the rest of us when this album came out lmao)
She's stunning. I've been enamored with her since this song first came out.
I had a huge crush on Juel when I was younger but....tb fair, have you seen lex lol
Damn straight! She’s hotter than a $2 pistol.
Nobody has mentioned "Hands" as another Jewel song to do. I think that is her best song overall. But, yes, "You Were Meant For Me", "Foolish Games", Standing Still", and even later Jewel ("Intuition") are all worth a listen as well.
I hope they do them all
Deep Water is a great song
I think Pieces of You is her best song.
You should really check the video of her doing "Foolish Games" with just her and her guitar. I remember when this came out and hearing her for the first time, was just unreal how different that music was at the time. Love to see you try some Dead Can Dance as something really out there, or Nightwish.
Foolish games is my favorite jewel song
YES! Foolish games pls
Yes, but I say official version before live so they can compare- love “Foolish Games!”
Foolish games really shows her vocal power. Love the song. Live or studio both great.
The single versions that came with the videos were poop compared to the album. They cut out half of the yodels, intentional voice cracks, and other emotional tricks she used. The album versions are best.
Jewel was such a great singer songwriter of the 90’s. She has a great yodel, lived in a van after moving to LA from Alaska and dated Sean Penn. That website got a few of the words wrong (hopefully you heard it when you listened). She has some great songs.
She also starred in the movie Jerry Macguire
Was? Is.
I thought she had dated Charlie Sheen?
When you realize Jewel was 16, homeless, living in her car, hoboing across the country when she wrote this, it hits different for sure. Her first experiences with US culture during this time too.
Brad got progressively more concerned! hahaha. He was smiling and then like, "Yeah. Who WILL save your soul?"
There’s a performance (possibly of this song) from Woodstock 99 where the guitar plays a lick and then she sings it and they go back and forth. Super cool to watch.
Wow, Brad looks intrigued and mesmerized, I've never seen those facial expressions from him before. Jewel is an amazing talent. Glad you guys are getting into Jewel and Alanis, two powerhouses who sold a lot of albums in the '90s.
Jewel is amazing. And her small concerts are the best entertainment I've ever attended...
never been to a jewel concert, but small concerts are the BEST.
She's my favorite singer. I've seen her live 10 or 11 times or so, I've lost count. So good.
Check her out when she gets up on stage in a random club on karaoke night . Her hair and makeup team made her unrecognizable and she went up as a random bar dweller and wailed this tune karaoke style..everyone was like wtf? Who is this person!? Pretty cool video.
Thank you for the suggestion! I just watched that and it was awesome! Just a brilliant idea and perfectly executed!
Lol yes Karen! Where's Karen?
College humor video. So good.
There is a show on Discovery "Alaska the last frontier" it's about the Kilcher family that homestead the area. Jewel is the daughter of one of the main characters of that show and she has made appearances from time to time.
Love the family.. when jewel visited and grandpa built the stuff for him to play in..
The Kilchers live about 7 miles away from me
They all loaded
I used to listen to Jewel a lot back in the 90s. She has an amazing singing voice. She had a really rough start. Endured a lot of sexual harassment. Even at a really young age. Which is disgusting. But she stood strong and made it on her own. Her life is quite a story. Try "You Were Meant for Me", "Foolish Games", "Standing Stll".
Jewel is a sweet woman. She got the largest back end deal EVER in music. They offered her a million sign on and she turned it down while homeless. She rocks. Foolish games is my fav!
ruclips.net/video/teq1P0JJa3E/видео.html
Jewel has a wide range voice which any singer would envy. She incorporates a yodeling within the phrasing.
It's a yodel, keening. they do that a lot sometimes in folk and country music.
Great interview with her and Joe Rogan, where she talks about living in her car and playing in a small cafe, to having a bidding war from record companies to sign her.
I can only take Joe Rohan in small doses, but that episode is awesome. Her life story is pretty wild, and Joe actually sits back and lets her talk for a few hours.
@@pro-v7500 Yeah, I wasn't trying to do a Joe Rogan commercial, but even if you don't like him, his podcast with Jewel is really amazing.
Her voice is just like butter, so smooth. You've only scratched the surface of her talent.
She is a good folk rock and country music singer since the '90s. Still makes music now.
Jewel is one cool human being! The kind of person who is easy to like, and is well known for her philanthropy. ♥
Written in high school while hitch hiking to mexico.
she doesn't sing this yodel style version as much any more when performing this song.
she got self conscience or for some reason didn't like the way it sounded a few years later.
it's my favorite version(album version)
Her life story is wild. Her interview in Joe Rogan is really good. (And despite how anyone may feel about Joe Rogan currently, this interview he actually sits back and lets her talk for a few hours.)
Jewel is a great and powerful singer and her lyrics are gold. She made a ton of money, then walked away from the machine to live happily ever after. Smart too.😘
Jewel is another one that's from when I was a young man. Her whole first CD is good, she has an incredible voice and shes easy on the eyes.
Great reaction
Often imitated but never duplicated, Jewel is an amazing singer/songwriter.
Shes a woman of integrity. She defended Rogan when everyone else was bashing him. Not that I care about Rogan being defended but its the principle of her standing for what she believes is right in the face of the mob
Great seeing her on The Masked Singer this year. She's so talented and blessed us in the 90's with her voice.
I only watched the first season of that show. Maybe I should look that one up
Jewel is an amazingly capable singer, beautiful, kind and crazy talented!
That change in vocal is learned from yodeling.
Jewel has a fantastic voice range. That is what you are hearing and noticing. She can go high, low, then "sweet". One of the best vocal range singers I've ever heard. You need to check out more of her songs so you can hear the different voice ranges. "Foolish games' is fantastic, "Hands", "Your were meant for me"...
I saw her live at a music festival along with Lenny Kravitz and The Violent Femmes in 1996. I had never heard of her at the time but right after that she was all over the radio.
I never really got into Jewel, but ended up seeing her perform live at the Washington International Horse Show, and she was actually awesome. I had no idea she was still singing or performing and was really surprised at how good she was...
I love Jewel's voice! It's pure and amazing with the little yodel in the high notes. I love Jewels laid back style and her writing is so deep and meaningful!💖💖
Typical Brad looking perplexed while Lex is just grooving right along. Love it!
Brad looks like his brain is melting down trying to process Jewel lol
Jewel is one of the finest singer songwriters of our time. Shortly after she was discovered in a San Diego coffee shop while homeless, she toured with both Neil Young and Bob Dylan who encouraged her to stay true to herself and she has always remained authentic while still managing to sell over 35 million records. She has many hits, mostly from the 1990's, including ... "Foolish Games", "You Were Meant For Me", "Again and Again", "Standing Still", "Intuition", etc. I would actually recommend you react to one of her live performances such as "Hands" ruclips.net/video/yTObzoDZaAU/видео.html. I think you will be impressed She has incredible vocal control and range and and can yodel like you won't believe. Cheers!
Great performance, though I've hear "Hands" so many times. Personal favorites of mine are Woodstock '99... she bends her voice to meet the guitar in one song and sings them all VERY differently. And, Stageside live, I love the rapport with the audience and the way she compared her early tone to Kermit the Frog in a self-deprecating but very humorous way. Her brother and dad also come out for her on this one ruclips.net/video/gncv3yEKVVc/видео.html
Woodstock '99 ruclips.net/video/qUfuOAWgjx8/видео.html just in case you're interested.
I couldn't stand her in the 90's, my lady loved her and I gritted my teeth in the car... I lean toward heavier stuff. BUT, she grew a lot from then and became... well... a Jewel!
Wow.. I’ve never heard this before… very powerful .. great vocals.
It's crazy how young she was when she wrote this song, learning songs like this on guitar will help you guys get beginner songs down, it's 4 chords, pretty easy once you learn the chords. Once you learn your chords you'll start hearing how alot of songs use the same 3 or 4 chords , it just depends on what you do with them.
Jewel really is her own personal genre! I also hear that type of big, set-way-back-in-the-throat sound in Shakira’s vocals.
The interview she did on Joe Rogan was amazing! She is such an interesting and wise person!
Jewel is one of the most talented artists ever lived. She writes her own (incredible) lyrics, her was is amazing, and she is an astonishig singer, also she writes her on music, she plays guitar. She's a wonder. Also she's very beautiful.
the "second voice" is her yodeling training coming out! She was trained in opera, yodeling, and classic from a young age
Brad, Jewel's voice is the way you described "like a kid who got a new toy" . She knows what her voice does, plays between ranges and styles.
A great video of her to watch is when on acoustic guitar yodeling a song ...... with her dad playing guitar and singing with her❤️ it's one of the purest performances ever!
Went to see her in Scotland years ago and she was so powerful live. And in between songs she was super charming, telling silly stories. She was ace.
This is one of my favorite reactions. I love her story and her talent. Not for everyone but she’s got special talents.
“You were just kinda locked up”….hardest I’ve laughed in quite a while 🤣❤️
She was all over the radio, rock stations alternative stations country stations... Same music got a lot of diverse play
You stumbled on a good one here Brad, Jewel is all American, and a little hottie too. A country, folk singer from Alaska. check out this version, this Is raw Jewel on the Howard Sterns show.
Nearly 30 years later and she's still amazing (won Masked Singer) and still BEAUTIFUL.
Glad to see somebody finally react to Jewel. Thank you for getting to her. She's way too good to be unheard.
Welcome to the wonderful world of jewel, I know it's hard but it's unexplainable, but the look on Brad's face was amazing loved it, straight confusion. You're coming around my man. Hat's off love y'all's reactions.
Y’all need to hear more. She’s an amazing singer. Even just her and her guitar by a campfire is what sh loves
Okay Brad and Lex, here's a link to a video you MUST see! This is Undercover Karaoke with Jewel.
ruclips.net/video/rmv1VhrtYRo/видео.html
Yes - great suggestion.
Good vid. There's one of Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles) doing Karaoke of "Eternal Flame"
100%
Oh JEWEL Is The Best. Most Beautiful Voice. Sweetest of hearts. 🌸🕊️🙏
she wrote this song at 16 years old. More Jewel reactions please!
I’m 30 and this song is so nostalgic to me. They use to play it all the time at our local pool over the speakers. A lot of jewel and Cheryl crow
Jewel has always been my guilty pleasure 😂
Its Jewels fantastic style of vocals I absolutely fell in love with the very first time I heard it.
I love Jewel! (who doesnt) her ability to go from sweet sexy voice to raw power is amazing
Foolish Games!!! Her voice on that is INCREDIBLE.
I recently got a whole new respect for Jewel. She won the last season of The Masked Singer, hearing her do so many different songs really showed me a range I never knew she had. She really is an amazing singer…
Ugh I love her. I’ve had this CD since I was a little girl. Chills forever.
Being an Alaskan and a musician I was always super proud of her. Killer song writer and performer. Get it!
You should check out Ben harper and the Innocent Criminals "Temporary Remedy" live at the hollywood bowl. He plays an electric lap slide guitar that is amazing
Needle and the damage done performed on the Howard Stern show by jewel is amazing
That confused look on Brad’s face is priceless!
Jewel is one of the few people that can grab a guitar with nothing else and entertain a crowd of thousands
Oh boy, you guys opened up a Pandora's box. Ladies of the 90s.
Let's go!! Woot!
You guys are my favorite reaction channel hands down!
I'm shocked that nobody has commented on the fact that she also won "The Masked Singer" competition for 2018. She was the Queen of Hearts. She had some impressive performances of other artists songs. She was the best that year.
You guys need to do more Jewel, she's an amazing artist. As a child she won yodeling contests. Her concert material is even better, they really tamed her in the recording studio....concerts you get more of her.
Jewel did an undercover karaoke a while back that was fun to watch. I was born in Jackson, MS, spent most of my life calling Mississippi and Louisiana home.
Love this reaction, love this song, love the interpretation of her going from little girl to grown woman with her voice. And thank you for just starting the video right away 😆🙌🏼
You Were Meant For Me,,,,is her signature song. 👍👍👍😎
Jewel is definitely an old soul.💥
Jewel is unique and a legend. 💜💜🙏🙏
That is called a yodel. It can be used in many different ways in vocal applications. Not just the Alps.
She also does a little skatting and slurring(blending).;
You guys feed off each other and together light the room. Best out there..
Jewel is probably the most talented singer to come out of the 90's, no pedal effects just pure vocal talent
Careful Brad......lol..... In the 90's when Jewel was new and making a big noise in music my girl told me "while you are at work I am going to to destroy your Jewel cd's"...... Love you Lex......Dolores, Jewel, Alanis........awesome!!!!!
Jewel is incredible, very eclectic catalog of great tunes.
The quality of Lex's little softly sung few words tells me Brad asks her to sing for him.
Thanks for the reaction!
Jewel is deep af. She was homeless, and she is as real as they come. Strip away the artifice, and she’s still a girl with her guitar and immensely talented. Love her
Jewel is a phenomenal talent and I loved this reaction. If you're interested, she also has a book 📖 of poetry called "A Night Without Armor". I HIGHLY recommend it.
It's a shame her career isn't still that big today. 🥺
i'm a crusty old biker metalhead & this song has always hit me right square in the feelz, from the first time i heard it on the radio.
More nostalgia. Bought this on CD when it first came out too. Love it! 🥰
Always loved that song. And she's beautiful too. Thanks, cats.
Love Jewel 💕 I call it vocal gymnastics. Definitely recommend more from her in the near future! Please and thank you 😊
I remember when she played In Knoxville small venues just before suddenly she was all over the radio! Cool lady
Oh its so great to have you do this one. Jewel is someone that is hard to define. Wicked Games is one of the best songs ever. Listen to this one. This was the first cassette that I ever had, I was 7 or so. I loved to mimic her with my sad attempt at her voice wobbles.
I always loved this song...I picked this song for a high school vocal class test...its fun to sing to
“You Were Meant For Me” and “Foolish Games” were here biggest singles! MUST HEAR!!!
I loved this when it came out because it was so different. Jewel was gorgeous also.
I knew when I saw the thumbnail that I had to watch, because Brad was gonna be fascinated. 🙂
She grew up yodeling, so the start of the chorus begins yodeling then gets soft. She’s a phenomenal singer
Yes! She grew up in Alaska and Yodels! Lived in a Van in L.A before she got her break!! Great story for u to look into!!
Jewel is beautyful in every way.
