Klaus Meine is by far one of the best Continental European vocalists of all time his vocal range is beautifully soaring and to think he may have lost his voice permanently in '81 and had to take a long period of rest to recover.

Scorpions started in 1965 and just released a new album. They are touring as we speak. From 65-70 they only performed in German. But switched to English and took off. This is considered one of the first Metal ballads.

If you saw them live you know Klaus voice has power and on top of that is so distinct. Marvelous. I saw them 4 times from 92-91 and every time was great. A real trooper.

what you should know that it isn't sang live... it is a TV show, it looks like a concert but its a german tv show where different acts performed for a tv prime time show... and when you listen to an album version it's exactly the same... so it's full playback but i agree he did it great in the studio... :)
He was the first rock lead singer I ever heard sound as good if not better on stage live than on the album. Second singer I heard destroy his own songs live would be lead singer of Shinedown.
You're the vocal expert, which I'm not. However, I have to point out (as someone who was born and raised in America and lived in Germany for two years) that he has a very distinct German accent in his English, which adds SO much to the depth and feeling of this song! This is a trait that few American vocalists can replicate. Klaus has a rare gift that is vastly underestimated!
Sadly I don't think this is live though ... seems like they were on some show that wouldn't allow the band to perform live ... there are plenty of the scorpions live shows about though that prove that Klaus is an incredible live performer so go check them out!
This was the norm back then. You will find that most if not all TV shows, especially in Europe, did playback for all bands and singers. That could be due to not having the right technology then to recreate the sound properly on TV. But the song remains the same to react to. ??? I especially love their way of performing.

Some people are just born a plane above the rest of us in talent. Scorpions always had that beautiful melodic sound that somehow doesn't detract from their more purely rock songs.
Being an American who has lived in Germany for several years and studied Linguistics, I can definitely hear a difference in his pronunciation when compared to Americans. That being said, I think it is very beautiful and unique and not at all a bad thing. He definitely pronounces things "well'" as you say, but I think there is something extra there that makes his tone and vowels even more distinguishable. I hear the German-ness in his voice for sure but again, I really like it.
These are my boys Beth....have known them since 2007 and still keep in touch with Matthias Jabs, lead guitar, even though I'm not well enough to go see them anymore. This is one of their most famous classics and the very song I heard in 1984 that introduced me to Scorpions' music in the first place. France has a popular story about this song. It's said, the year this debuted in that country, the next year, they had an incredible baby boom. lol Great choice of video, but it is lip synched. But who cares? ha Klaus' unique voice shook me up. I love how he sings in the back of his throat to create some of his best screams. And yes the breathiness he does is sexy. ha BTW, the one riff that Matthias does in that part of the song, is so plaintiff, the guitar is almost crying. His style literally catapulted this band to another level that made other bands nervous and jealous. Along with their dramatic flair, their craziness and the fun they all had on stage, made them a force to be reckoned with. And I would be remiss to leave Rudolf out of the actual lead part that he changed with Matthias on this one. Every now and then they changed lead. And yes I am so damn proud that I got to known them. They are precious beautiful heart warming guys. As for the English, yes it was very hard for them to translate lyrics into how they should be, but their drummer, Herman Rarebell, at the time, already knew English pretty well and between him and their producer, I think, helped with all of that. But eventually they all learned English and all was well with the world. lol BTW, Matthias loves having new outfits made for new tours (such as the one they just started in Vegas) and twice now, in the past, he has sent me photos of them when they're done. He told me when this 3rd set is done he will send me photos again. FYI: His Mother-In-Law is an incredible silk painter, so his shirts are silks with her paintings. (sorry so long)

Klaus Meine has an amazing voice that really cuts through the music like a blade. Early stuff like Speedy's Coming, In Trance, Fly to the Rainbow is my favourite. Holiday is another ballad and there's a live clip from Paris, I think, that is really great.
This is really a standard for every power ballad of the 80s. Love the "floydian" rhythm guitar in the verse. The chorus is pure explosion of love and regret, with such a powerful and distinctive voice.
Keep in mind, that Klaus is a native German Speaker. You can hear it in his vocals, especially "Rot" you like a hurricane. Still love the Scorps. Best concert I've ever been to.
A rock band graced with a great singer is so good, one with a great singer and lead guitarist is next level. The bass and the drums need to be there as well but the lead singer and lead guitar for the Scorpions are both masters at their craft. Great song.

Scorpions are all from Germany, but from when they formed... they always sang in English in the hopes of hitting the U.S./U.K. music scene one day. You should check out some early Scorpions.... definitely worth it. Sails of Charon, Yellow Raven, In Trance, Inheritance, Fly to the Rainbow... songs from early days... so many good ones though.
As many times as I've heard this song, I could tell right away that this is not live audio, but the exact studio/cd version layed over a live concert. It still is awesome to hear though. A masterpiece.
Millions of rock fans thank God that the Scorpions broke worldwide for German in the pre-Internet days. These days this kind of talent can get exposure. In the 70"s we could have missed this genius. I don't even like to think about all the other talent we did miss because it could never be heard or seen.
Born and raised in Germany never really learned to speak english till later on in their lives, I have known the Scopions since 1976 and dugg deep into their roots of rock music. Two amazing guitarist brothers Rudolph and Michael Schenker and singer Klaus Meine started this band in the late '60s and released the debut album "Lonesome Crow" in 1972, in early 1974 Michael left the Scorpions and joined UFO for five years. Meantime, The Scorpions kept asking Michael for assistence in writing and composing songs for them and by this time Uli Jon Roth was with the Scorpions and they were both amazing writers and composers that the Scorpions and UFO had someof the greatest album between 1974 through 1979. Uli left the Scorpions and Michael left UFO, and the Scorpions needed a new album so requested Michael to rejoin them on their Lovedrive album which is a phenomenal album, they toured that year and eventually Michael left and began his solo career with MSG (Michael Schenker Group), and is still on tour as I write this comment

When this song was recorded, he spoke no English at all beyond one or two words. Just like the Swedish band Roxette, they're from a time when English wasn't as commonly taught in schools in Germany, or Sweden. Both learned to phonetically repeat the words to the songs in English. Which also explains the DEFINITE EURO-ENGLISH ACCENT you obviously missed. The syntax and word choices are obviously translations from non native English speakers. It's no different than you learning to pronounce German words correctly, but still using UK English syntax and translation equivalents.
I always loved his voice. They are still in my top 5 of best sounding live bands I've seen. I still love their reggae tinged song, IS THERE ANYBODY THERE?

Check out; When the Smoke is Going Down Send Me an Angel Not a ballad, but I'd you want to hear what Klaus Meine sounded like before he had surgery to his vocal chords, check out "The Zoo" from 1980's Animal Magnetism album. There is a very different kind of ballad on that album titled "Lady Starlight" though I think "The Zoo" exemplifies his vocal sound during that time.
The Scorps earliest albums were a huge influence on me as a musician and music lover. Their live shows were also as good as it got back then. No one ever blew them away. Jabs and Schenker always had the coolest looking guitars. explorers and v's, nothing cooler looking on stage.
Klaus Meine grew up in Germany. Interesting trivia - he's actually NOT been with the band since its beginning, joining it "only" in 1969, but he's been on every studio album of the Scorpions. He had been a singer in another band with Michael Schenker briefly, and then both switched to the Scorpions which had been founded by Michael Schenker's brother, Rudolf. Rudolf Schenker is, in fact, the only member of the Scorpions who has been with the band from its very beginning. Michael Schenker, of course, moved on to have a massive career of his own.

Their live performances were always off the charts; age catches all of us but Klaus has kept his voice in great shape. One of the all-time great rock bands!
No, everyone in Skorpions is german "born and raised, as the americans like to say. 🤣 They actually started as a school Band and stayed together all the years. :D The Skorpions also wrote the Soundtrack, so to say, to the Fall of the iron courtain and german reunification, "Winds of change". One of the things I like about these eighties oldies is that I remember when they were released and that period of time. No matter the little technology that existed around us.
Love The Scorpions. They really took off in the 80’s, during a time filled with crappy big haired, glam metal bands. Their music really stood out among the other groups of the time. While bands like poison, were singing about soulless superficial crap, like parting and going to strip clubs, The Scorpions were definitely more soulful and thought provoking.

Saw the Scorpions live in Munich while stationed in Vicenza (1989). A truly amazing experience and a great time to be alive.

I think he always sings with a slight German accent! "Things that KILT our love..." This is the album recording that they mimed to for a TV show.
These are my boys Beth....have known them since 2007 and still keep in touch with Matthias Jabs, lead guitar, even though I'm not well enough to go see them anymore. This is one of their most famous classics and the very song I heard in 1984 that introduced me to Scorpions' music in the first place. France has a popular story about this song. It's said, the year this debuted in that country, the next year, they had an incredible baby boom. lol Great choice of video, but it is lip synched. But who cares? ha Klaus' unique voice shook me up. I love how he sings in the back of his throat to create some of his best screams. And yes the breathiness he does is sexy. ha BTW, the one riff that Matthias does in that part of the song, is so plaintiff, the guitar is almost crying. His style literally catapulted this band to another level that made other bands nervous and jealous. Along with their dramatic flair, their craziness and the fun they all had on stage, made them a force to be reckoned with. And I would be remiss to leave Rudolf out of the actual lead part that he changed with Matthias on this one. Every now and then they changed lead. And yes I am so damn proud that I got to known them. They are precious beautiful heart warming guys.
As for the English, yes it was very hard for them to translate lyrics into how they should be, but their drummer, Herman Rarebell, at the time, already knew English pretty well and between him and their producer, I think, helped with all of that. But eventually they all learned English and all was well with the world. lol
BTW, Matthias loves having new outfits made for new tours (such as the one they just started in Vegas) and twice now, in the past, he has sent me photos of them when they're done. He told me when this 3rd set is done he will send me photos again. FYI: His Mother-In-Law is an incredible silk painter, so his shirts are silks with her paintings.

Klaus Meine has an amazing voice that really cuts through the music like a blade. Early stuff like Speedy's Coming, In Trance, Fly to the Rainbow is my favourite. Holiday is another ballad and there's a live clip from Paris, I think, that is really great.

This is really a standard for every power ballad of the 80s. Love the "floydian" rhythm guitar in the verse. The chorus is pure explosion of love and regret, with such a powerful and distinctive voice.
Keep in mind, that Klaus is a native German Speaker. You can hear it in his vocals, especially "Rot" you like a hurricane. Still love the Scorps. Best concert I've ever been to.
A rock band graced with a great singer is so good, one with a great singer and lead guitarist is next level. The bass and the drums need to be there as well but the lead singer and lead guitar for the Scorpions are both masters at their craft. Great song.
They write some absolutely gorgeous melodies and lyrics, beautifully played and sung.

This IS the Power Ballad all power ballads aspired to be! Klause & Ronnie James were friends. There is a song on RUclips were Klause is singing Rainbow In The Dark with Dio. Quality is not great but it gives you the general idea of them singing together.

About Klaus Meines english pronuncing... he's actually not very good in english. If you listen to interviews in english he has got a very strong german accent.

Scorpions are all from Germany, but from when they formed... they always sang in English in the hopes of hitting the U.S./U.K. music scene one day.
You should check out some early Scorpions.... definitely worth it. Sails of Charon, Yellow Raven, In Trance, Inheritance, Fly to the Rainbow... songs from early days... so many good ones though.

As many times as I've heard this song, I could tell right away that this is not live audio, but the exact studio/cd version layed over a live concert. It still is awesome to hear though. A masterpiece.
Millions of rock fans thank God that the Scorpions broke worldwide for German in the pre-Internet days. These days this kind of talent can get exposure. In the 70"s we could have missed this genius. I don't even like to think about all the other talent we did miss because it could never be heard or seen.

Born and raised in Germany never really learned to speak english till later on in their lives, I have known the Scopions since 1976 and dugg deep into their roots of rock music. Two amazing guitarist brothers Rudolph and Michael Schenker and singer Klaus Meine started this band in the late '60s and released the debut album "Lonesome Crow" in 1972, in early 1974 Michael left the Scorpions and joined UFO for five years. Meantime, The Scorpions kept asking Michael for assistence in writing and composing songs for them and by this time Uli Jon Roth was with the Scorpions and they were both amazing writers and composers that the Scorpions and UFO had someof the greatest album between 1974 through 1979. Uli left the Scorpions and Michael left UFO, and the Scorpions needed a new album so requested Michael to rejoin them on their Lovedrive album which is a phenomenal album, they toured that year and eventually Michael left and began his solo career with MSG (Michael Schenker Group), and is still on tour as I write this comment

When this song was recorded, he spoke no English at all beyond one or two words. Just like the Swedish band Roxette, they're from a time when English wasn't as commonly taught in schools in Germany, or Sweden. Both learned to phonetically repeat the words to the songs in English. Which also explains the DEFINITE EURO-ENGLISH ACCENT you obviously missed. The syntax and word choices are obviously translations from non native English speakers. It's no different than you learning to pronounce German words correctly, but still using UK English syntax and translation equivalents.
I always loved his voice. They are still in my top 5 of best sounding live bands I've seen. I still love their reggae tinged song, IS THERE ANYBODY THERE?

Fun factoid, Klaus Meine did not grow up in the US or UK, however the drummer, Herman "Ze German" Rarebell, did live in the UK for a spell and thusly developed a better command of the English language earlier than the rest of Scorpions did. Therefore he wrote most of the lyrics during the band's classic period.

Not a ballad, but I'd you want to hear what Klaus Meine sounded like before he had surgery to his vocal chords, check out "The Zoo" from 1980's Animal Magnetism album. There is a very different kind of ballad on that album titled "Lady Starlight" though I think "The Zoo" exemplifies his vocal sound during that time.
The Scorps earliest albums were a huge influence on me as a musician and music lover. Their live shows were also as good as it got back then. No one ever blew them away. Jabs and Schenker always had the coolest looking guitars. explorers and v's, nothing cooler looking on stage.

Klaus Meine grew up in Germany. Interesting trivia - he's actually NOT been with the band since its beginning, joining it "only" in 1969, but he's been on every studio album of the Scorpions. He had been a singer in another band with Michael Schenker briefly, and then both switched to the Scorpions which had been founded by Michael Schenker's brother, Rudolf. Rudolf Schenker is, in fact, the only member of the Scorpions who has been with the band from its very beginning. Michael Schenker, of course, moved on to have a massive career of his own.

Their live performances were always off the charts; age catches all of us but Klaus has kept his voice in great shape. One of the all-time great rock bands!
No, everyone in Skorpions is german "born and raised, as the americans like to say. 🤣 They actually started as a school Band and stayed together all the years. :D
The Skorpions also wrote the Soundtrack, so to say, to the Fall of the iron courtain and german reunification, "Winds of change". Also smthg I'd recommend you give it a listen. Great reaction. 👍

Love The Scorpions. They really took off in the 80’s, during a time filled with crappy big haired, glam metal bands. Their music really stood out among the other groups of the time. While bands like poison, were singing about soulless superficial crap, like parting and going to strip clubs, The Scorpions were definitely more soulful and thought provoking.
Seeing them was one of the highest honors I have even have in my life!!
