Denny had such a fantastic singing voice! I think he's very much under appreciated.
Easily one of the most overlooked vocalists in rock/pop history!
Too true!
Mr. 1000, the one on Law And Order SVU?
@@mountainguyed67 What???
@@Mr.56Goldtop You mentioned Munch, he was the older detective on SVU.
The haunting magic comes at 5:23 when Mama Cass only sings "dreamin" while Mama Michelle sings "California Dreamin" Then Cass sings an extended "On such a winters day" while Michelle sings "California Dreamin" at the same time. It is mind bending yet it is so haunting and flows ethereally.
Wow! Indeed. Amazing.
A favorite moment which I always wait for. Angelic.
I knew there was something about it I liked. Good call
That has always been my favorite part of the song!
Thank you for this!
John Phillips was an amazing songwriter and as importantly, an amazing arranger.
Cass Elliott's voice was a once-in-a-generation example of perfection. Put her in harmony in any group and that group is instantly better than it was.
I recall watching a younger Cass with 2 other heftier young women singers in Ed Sullivan show. She wasn't a rock or folk singer at all in her roots. Pure pop singer. Real singer Denny and Cass had to sing louder (you can hear their distinctive voices mostly), so it's real a duet group with harmony backups. Denny's wife just there to sell records as eye candy, and she knew it.
John Phillips head some amazing talents but Man that that come with some serious addiction problems. I heard he was such a terrible alcoholic/drug user that at Keith Richards threw him out of a party he was throwing because he was so wild and out of control. To go so far even Keith Richards has a problem with you, That's a new low. It sad that such amazing talent comes with such problems sometimes.
@@minnesota_fats7344 Yeah, and his daughter, McKenzie, had similar problems. They got her booted from One Day at a Time if I remember correctly.
I didn't coin the phrase, but I've quoted it many times, "Cocaine is God's way of telling you you have too much money."
@@minnesota_fats7344and his daughter Mackenzie also alleges that John abused her sexually as a child.
@@minnesota_fats7344 You should read about what he did to his daughter.
Cass doing "Leaving On A Jet Plane" with John Denver shows her harmonization better. Maybe "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" for a Cass single.
I definitely agree, I have it saved as one of my favorites.
Many times my excuse to a question is...
..cuz im leavin' on a jet plane. Don't know when ill be back again
My favourite is Play your own kind of music.
This has me craving a Peter, Paul, and Mary reaction to "Blowin in the Wind". Love your channel so much Beth.

@@markvanderstelt8999 who do you mean?
My favorite group
One of my all time favorites. This song is perfect!
Another harmony band the 60's is the Seekers. They had a huge hit in Georgy Girl. They started as a pure folk group and have a huge catalog. One of my favorite songs by them is I'll Never Find Another You.
Agreed. Judith Durham's voice is second only to Karen Carpenter's.
Watching Judith sing The Carnival is Over live on Rockwiz just shows how incredible her voice was RIP Judith Durham ❤
Try solo Mama Cass "Make Your Own Kind Of Music". She is amazing singer
Mama Cass doing Dream A Little Dream is phenomenal. Love California Dreaming too.
My first favourite band. As a small child I was obsessed with my tape of Mamas and Papas and I totally wore out the old cassette.
You bring so much joy to hearing a song that was a favorite of mine when I was a child. You bring so much to every reaction: knowledge, insight, and education. But you also bring a genuine love of good music that you emote so very well. You help make old songs new again, and I love you for the blessing of your enthusiasm.
Great song, timeless.
I would suggest "Creeque Alley" - it is loosely the story of their formation as a band - and a great song.
There are certainly modern vocal bands that are at least on par with this but it's difficult to compare without accounting for the innovation and evolution of pop music and musicians back in the 50s - 70s. I think a band that would match up well with Mamas and Papas today is Little Big Town. Try almost any of their songs but I would recommend Boondocks or Pontoon to start.
Mama Cass turned out to be the real star of the group. When she went solo, she really was a big star. Miss her. RIP.
Nahh . Michelle is the star . She’s beautiful she’s the Mexican beauty she speaks Spanish she sings beautiful she had charisma . She is the only star to come out of that group. The fat girl was ok just ok
@@reneaguilar3471 Michelle Gilliam Phillips is Not Latina at all, look it up. Ever hear her sing solo? Mama Cass (just O.K?) is the one who's the Real singer in that group. Google that Also! Check out the facts first.
@@pbrucpaul I know she’s not Latina . She lived down in Mexico in her childhood to mid teens . She speaks perfect Spanish and did not learn how to write in English till she was in her teens . She was born in the states but has that part of the Mexican culture that will never go away . And yes I have a bias for her but really people put her down in favor of an super overrated Cass. By the way Mexican hippie was the name that John used to presented her in their performances🤔🙏🏼😁
@@pbrucpaul by the way I heard her solo and she is awesome . Her voice is sweet kind of like Olivia Newton John . Delicate and velvety . But she was not a natural singer John made her learn how to sing so she could go on tour with him . Michelle was considered one of the best sopranos of her time . So that will tell you how much she developed from zero . Cass was not acceptable to John because she could not sing some high notes but fortunately for her she found the way and was accepted by John . Cass makes the group look just like normal people in their image . The big mushroom 🍄 John called her . And the Canadian citizen had to me the best voice in the group that’s Denny alright
@@reneaguilar3471 John was reluctant to have Cass in the group because of her weight -- he made up the other excuse after the fact, to save face. Cass could reach any and all notes. It was an image thing.
Must also watch Cass' foot work , is doing traditional Scottish dancing, beautiful. Her voice is incredible
Their entire catalog is worth hearing and owning.
Denny Doherty was born and is buried near me. Really want to visit his grave one day. What a voice, he did the Maritimes proud!
He was an amazing singer. Too bad this lady cuts the sound right before his first vocal solo and then talks right as he "got down on my knees"...
Yeah...I just looked him up to write some appreciation...but too late 8m afraid. ...died in 2007. What a voice...born too late.
He's buried near you ? How did you get on comments ?
You should hear Mama Kass sing "Dream a Little Dream of Me." That really shows how beautiful her voice was. I think she had the best voice in the group.
Certainly the most projecting and distinctive...but what is amazing cool to me is how her voice can fit in like she's just another one of the church choir ensemble...imho
They sing like angels 😇 in a choir
When I was with my Aunt at a cemetery in Halifax N.S., paying respect to my Uncle, a few years ago, she told me that Denny was buried somewhere in the same cemetery. Local boy home for good.
This isn't a live performance, they're not that easy to find unfortunately, but amazing when you do
That's what I thought - it couldn't sound *exactly* like the record when performed live - and their lip sync isn't very accurate.
Yup. They didn't have remote mics back then. Lip-sync city.
They were so in sync. I love them so much. I think they sound so good together. They compliment each other very well. Music was a legend then and still to this day. Miss you mama. I'm glad this narrator nailed it. Peace and love
Your music mirrors your mind
Say yes to Yes! Leave It is an excellent example of rock harmonies Love your channel!
This is one song I have never understood why anyone has ever recorded a cover version of. This is absolute 100% nailed on perfection! Cannot ever be improved, so leave well alone.
C'mon, you never listened to Jose Feliciano's version? He kills it and makes it his own. ruclips.net/video/9YicQtP-xyg/видео.html
I think this is a pretty credible cover by Shaw Blades. ruclips.net/video/LC3bMz0qNNA/видео.html
Everyone is scared to record it. No one can do a better job, This is the only version that’s needed. We can listen to it and enjoy it forever!
My sister and I did a cover of this, with her singing the harmony part and playing her bouzouki, with me singing the lead and my guitar at an open mic. I've also covered it on a double-track taping.
That`s easy. They loved it. Covering a song isn`t (always) about improving it or trying to do so. Its not about competition with the original. It`s not always about trying to make it your own. What makes you want to sing along is the same urge that makes many musicians want to cover it. Really not that hard to understand, unless you have a closed mindset and believe covering is only about improvement.
Wonderful 1960s harmony at its best! This is incredible music
Who was the “best” of the group? Who cares…the combination of these four voices is what truly makes it MAGIC.
Perfect in every way.
Love your take on one of my faves from my childhood.
The harmony groups of the late 60s to late 70s were so damn good and The Mamas and the Papas were one of the best.
The Association, The Byrds also.
I discovered your channel with the video of Hooverphonic, "Mad about you" and i liked it, so i decided to subscibe. I'm french and singer too. I love your voice, your hair (i love the red hair so much) and specially your sweetness tone when you're talking, it's really soothing, delicious to ear. Thank you.
They do a lot of "split off" harmony in "Monday, Monday"
Funnily enough, I only heard this song today as a recommendation on RUclips. It's years since I had heard it.
Love that old stuff and love your analysis! What talent and sound. BTW, the Beach Boys did a cover that you might want to look at.Beth, you rock!
Denny lost out on the rock lifestyle after his "friends" spent all his money. He moved back to Canada (Nova Scotia, I believe) and hosted a kid's tv show in the school he attended. And later seemed kind of sad that he rejected Cass, who was in love with him.
No, it may not be the new sound anymore, but there's still nothing like it. They had their own unmistakeable sound and magic.
Considering the album version, I have the slightly sensation this might be a playback, I mean I don't see any difference in instrumental parts, volume, breathing. What do you think Beth? Btw thanks for all your effort, your videos are amazing! Big hugs from Italy!
I don't think it is really a live version. :)
@@BethRoars jolly good! nice to find out my ears haven't got over yet! :)
@@BethRoars it was typical of this Era (not to say it isn't still happening) for the performers to lip sync with their studio recording. To get a live performance you have to find a concert recording, and back in the 70's we didn't have the high quality audio capture capabilities for those to turn out well. I don't recall if you've seen the John Denver/Cass Elliott performance of Leaving On A Jet Plane, but that one was actually live.
@@bradsouthers7476 You need a Midnight Special performance to get a real live show on TV.
@@bradsouthers7476 I believe you're right about the lip syncing and how common it was back then. In fact, I think a lot of TV shows didn't allow them to perform live for the very reasons you've mentioned, and the logistics of setting up/tearing down equipment, etc. And I think there are still some rather popular TV shows (talk shows, variety shows, etc.) that won't allow musicians to perform live.
You should react to "Go where you wanna go" by Cass. Absolutely wonderful!
I came to learn about singing and I stayed for the joy.
"I Call Your Name" is probably my favorite song by them. Incredibly strong solo parts by Cass and Denny and some of the most complex harmonies of any of their songs.
I also love their version of "I Call Your Name". It is the only Beatles song that I actually prefer someone else's cover. The Beatles original is fine - but I like John Phillips' arrangement for The Mamas and The Papas even better - and Mama Cass belts out that vocal. Here is a link to it: ruclips.net/video/X_WlLYBfL-k/видео.html
The Association had beautiful harmonies.
They recorded the background vocal for Barry McGuire's version of the song. Then, when they finally did their own version, they used the very same background tape they had made for Barry.
If you liked that you’re going to love Cass Elliot’s “Dream A Little Dream.”
Their "look" evolved throught the years to a more hippie style, especially the guys. Their sound remained pure and elegant.
The male soloist, Denny Doherty, the band considered their best singer, a natural balladeer. He grew up in Nova Scotia singing Scottish ballads and hymns... guess it prepared him perfectly for folk music.
I like that leaving on a jet plane song with John Denver.
Mama Cass was a leading light in the whole Laurel Canyon singer songwriter scene. She actually took Graham Nash to meet Crosby and Stills and told them they would "sound great together". I told you she was in the audience at the Monterey Pop Festival. As a mtter of fact the guitar player in this (John Phillips) was co-promotor of the festival.
That "rarr" get me every time, lol! Fantastic to see you in my reccs again, Beth! Big thumbs up
They mastered harmony … as well as the carpenters, the beach boys , The Bee Gees .. Crosby stills and Nash .. all amazing . Sadly you do not hear this anymore in todays over processed music
I would recommend looking into Steam Powered Giraffe for some fantastic harmonies.
Members of 2 rival San Francisco bands. 🌁 They folded. In Los Angeles, 4 me.bers reformed into this band. 👨🎤👩🎤👩🎤👨🎤
Great vocals! Chynna is lead singer of Wilson Phillips. Carnie + Wendy, daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, are the other singer/writers.
Written by the late John Phillips. He was the Papa. Michelle Phillips is the only surviving member. She is 1 of the Mamas. The members were in 2 bands in my hometown San Francisco before forming. After the break up of the marriage and the band, Michelle became an actress.
Family tree .
In short, The Mamas and The Papas are related to The Beach Boys, Wilson Phillips, the jailed Danny Masterson, Billy Baldwin and his son-in-law Justin Bieber. The Mamas and Papas also lead to Van Halen.
John was Papa to actress Bijou, who is married to the jailed Danny Masterson. John was Papa + Michelle was Mama to actress Mackenzie + singer/writer Chynna. Billy Baldwin is married to Chynna. Billy is youngest brother of Alec. He is father of Haley, who married Justin Bieber. 🇨🇦
Suggested videos : 1 Wilson Phillips sing You're in Love live in Manila. 2 The Beach Boys perform Don't Worry Baby. 3 Van Halen performs I'll Wait live in Montreal, in 1984.
Denny moved back to 🇨🇦. He hosted a very popular children's show.
Beth, look at the guitarist. I think that's where they got the look for Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men
i LOVE your accent !! it’s so cute
Thank you, Beth. Brings back memories of the 60s every time I hear it, and the first time I caught the fresh Pacific coast air while overlooking Monterey Bay, CA. (sigh...)
Good to hear Denny and his Nova Scotia accent.
Agreed!
For those of us, who are old enough, like me, this song touches us like no other. It is absolutely timeless and wonderful.
Beth,
I am not always a fan of covers, but a group called Foxes and Fossils cover this classic. Perhaps you might want to give them a listen. And by the way, from what I heard these folks reportedly partied a little. They had very good harmonies. So being high did not effect that quality... Plus that was par for the course back then so I have been told.
If people really knew how good Momma Cass was, the band would have been called Momma Cass and the rest
It was pretty standard to not be a "live performance" at that time on TV. Sound issues primarily. I can't forget their song "Monday, Monday" it played ever day going to school on the school bus. This is in the period of folk singers and they would stand and sing or play. One way to see the difference is to watch Cher's show. She dressed up a bit more but the technique of just standing for a vocal performance with perhaps dancers on stage with them was paramount.
Michelle Phillips is a mother of Chynna Phillips from the Wilson Phillips group and of course the Wilson sisters are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys Michelle later became a well-known actress on TV
The harmonies on Helplessly Hoping by Crosby, Stills and Nash are exquisite.
The band had a mythical being they named "Harvey" which came into being when they sang in close harmony... sort of a fifth harmonic voice that seemed to appear out of nowhere. They'd work on a new harmony part and when that seemingly fifth vocal harmonic would bloom from their four voices they'd say: "Harvey's here!" and they knew they'd nailed the part.
TIL That's some cool info. Thanks for sharing.
That's not weird at all
oh the same harvey in those old jimmy Stewart movies ? he had a invisible rabbit only he could see and people thought he was crazy walking around talking to him haha very good movie.
If anyone wants to hear a really good example of Harvey, there's a part in "Midnight Voyage" that I think defines it. About the two minute 11 second mark ruclips.net/video/b-PmnVPOUaA/видео.html
@@markvanderstelt8999 Yes, Harvey was a pooka (sp?). Such a great movie.
well before the days of auto tune, sure there's reverb on the voices but whatever. It's as pure talent as it can get. Mama Cass..jeez..what a powerhouse of a voice,Denny Doherty too.
This is a “live” version in one sense, but this is the studio version being lip synched. Very common back in the day.
Mama Cass could have sang the contents of the phone book and made it sound good. Check out Monday Monday and Dream a Little Dream of Me, she's absolutely amazing on that
Singing along to the studio track, of course. No telling how many times their vocals were multiplied.
true. this is actually an analysis of a record. Sounds like everyone was 'double tracked' at the very least.
@@johnkonstantine9115 Did they do that back in the early 60s?
@@pyrmontbridge4737 constantly. doubletracking (stacking multiple takes of the same singer and line in one track) was key to the whole pop-sound since beat music. as with stacking detuned oscillators in a synthesizer, the slight variance across multiples of the same line fattens the sound. like giving a yellow letter on white background a light orange margin and a beige shadow...
this here is a double choir plus soloists arrangement. I guess on the record all bandmembers did both the call-choir and answer-choir, and layered multiple takes to get the big choir sound.
and agreed, seeing just 4 people, 1 guitar and no microphones on a stage and hearing a band with choir is weird
Cass at 5:23 layers "Dreamin'" over everyone else, including herself. That one little variance really transforms the song.
@@pyrmontbridge4737 Getting into the 70s, many groups wouldn't perform on tv because of the sound quality. Music engineering was advancing faster than quality television sets.
Mama Cass was an absolute unit

Holy Crap!! Your timing is Awful. Why would your first pause be right as the lead singer is about to go into an incredible vocals?
Interestingly, you said they just look like normal people, which is probably the case comparing them to people today. But back then longer hair for men was so revolutionary and so rejected by the older generation, that they would've looked anything but normal. Even his multi-coloured shirt would've really stood out.
I don't know if you would be interested, but Diana Krall's version is incredibly good. Much respect to both. Ps... M&P' s put on the Monterey Pop festival
Great new channel Beth!
Check out their tunes "I Saw Her Again" and "Monday Monday".
If you really want a thrill, listen to the song "Wild Women" by The Big Three. Cass Elliot was in that group before the Mamas and the Papas. She was an exceptional talent and this song really showcases her voice and stylings.
Great video as always Beth.
I would suggest they're miming to the recording here. All the points still apply though!
There are several bona fide Cass Elliott live performances I'd love to see you cover.

I started chuckling when you were discussing scoops and how groups should do them in unison….because I KNEW Mama Cass’ own scoop was coming. She sings “dreeeeeeeeeeeamiiiin’” while the other 3 sing “California dreamin’”. To every rule, there’s an exception. :-)
Harmony is the most painfully lost art in today's music, and it has been for years. Cheesy as it may sound, the last good bands to apply harmony were the Backstreet Boys. N'sync too, but not quite as much because they relied mostly on 2 front singers whereas the Backstreet Boys used all of them.
Nppe, there are plenty of artists out there doing spectacular harmonies, just because they aren't in the mainstream doesn't mean they don't exist. Check out Larkin Poe for some bad ass harmonizing. Check this out : ruclips.net/video/LopWl5GxRCs/видео.html
@@thorsluter7835 I love Larkin Poe! Preachin' Blues, Black Betty, Spoonful, In my time of Dying, and so many more. They should be more well known.
Simply timeless. Excellent choice for your astute analysis.
I miss the Scooby-Doo look that bands of that era had. Just adds to the magic.
Just so you know, this is the studio version of the song. Back then, everyone lip synced for videos because it was too hard to record live.
Denny and Cass were the vocal greats. Listen to Creeque Alley for the fun history of how they formed and their connection to the byrds, loving spoonful, etc.
Ms Beth have you tried John Denver. He has a wonderful duet w Mama Cass, Leaving onna Jet Plane, & also His songs Rocky Mountain High, Spirit. Eclipse, ect
Dennys' vocal break gets me Every. Single. TIME!!!
Good music , thanks
A live version of this song would indeed make for a very interesting reaction video. Because multiple singer harmony is hard to get right. Unfortunately this video wasn't a live singing performance. It was a lipsinc'd performance over the studio recording. A studio recording where there was the opportunity to "re do" any mistakes made and where perfect singing volume of each singer can be obtained at the mixing panel. I think it's a great song but I had never listened to it in detail paying attention to the details. All 4 voices are laden with a ton of delay, whether natural acoustic (studio) delay or electronically created delay, I don't know which but it creates an enormous full sound, as if there are 20 people singing.
What also stands out to me, listening to the percussion and particularly the every 4th beat cymbal, it has a completely different acoustic resonance as do the voices, very clearly recorded in a different space or with different 'mic-ing' techniques or different electronic treatment, the percussion seems very far removed from the voices recording. Of course this was 60's recording technology, but this was all to say that it would have been awesome to have Beth listen to a truly live performance of The Mama's and Papa's.
These people here. These people were decades before my time in 1984, they were more towards my parents time in the 60s, they were 50’ & 51’ babies, and this was one of my mom’s favorites. And it’s always been one of mine. I love songs from this era.
You have great taste.
I was an 60s kid 😢
The 3-part harmonies of Fleetwood Mac are pretty amazing. The Chain - live performance 1997 is a standout.
The Eagles, too. Their 5-part harmony on Seven Bridges Road is fire. And Beach Boys, of course, had amazing harmony, too.
Still gives me the chills after all these years.
Would love to see you react to LP - Lost on You (A Night at The McKittrick Hotel)!!!

As someone that grew up during the Beach Boys. I agree....more harmony
Keep on roarin' Beth, we love ya!
Have you reacted to the Milk Carton Kids? Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan - Two guitars, two voices, one microphone.
