- Toilet fill valve, bottom entry inlet valve replacement
If your toilet doesn't stop filling, chances are you need a new inlet valve. Inlet valves fail every so often and need to be replaced. This video will take you through the procedure I followed to replacement my own valve.
If your set up is similar to mines you will not require many tools. Adjustable wrench and some pipe grips. I have added links below if you require these.
The valve I used is a Siamp valve, also linked below.
Hope it helps.

Watched this as I thought I needed a new valve but learned from this vid that the arm that rises and falls to stop the water might just be catching. So it proved! Saved me a trip to the shop, the price of a valve and the time to fit it and earned a few domestic kudos to boot. Muchas gracias!
No problemo 👍
Thanks SO much for this clear and helpful video and for your other one, too. Fixed slow fill a few weeks ago then continuous fill today. Took a bit of time but I persisted and it was hugely satisfying to do both jobs as I'm not naturally handy or into DIY 🙏
Brilliant. Glad it helped. Well done 👍
first video that taught me to line the wee notch up to ensure success! thank you mate. Saved me an expensive plumber visit and got me sorted!!
Brilliant. Glad it helped with you wee notch 😁👍
This is what I love about RUclips. There's always a video out there that explains and demonstrates exactly what it is you were needing to do.
Glad you took the time to make this, it was very helpful, cheers mate!
Thank you. Glad it helped 👍
What is the wee red rubber ring (that wasn’t used) for?
What do you do with the red washer?
Brilliant mate. Searching for a while for a solution to my mysterious problem. The inlet valve doesn't tell it to stop filling. You just mentioned how how it works, then I discover it's jammed against the cistern inside wall so won't move. It took a Glasgwegian to give a Glasgwegian the answer! Cheers.
Brilliant. Glad it helped out a fellow Glaswegian.
Thanks for the help. Your video about changing the washer has got me half way there and now it's continuously filling up and leaking down the bowl so I've been turning the water on and off. This one should fix it!
Your videos have been really helpful! We used the one for fixing a slow-filling cistern a few months back and have just used this one to replace the fill valve completely as the toilet was continuously overflowing. I'd never done anything like this before so this has been a real life saver. Thanks again! 😃
That's brilliant. Thanks for letting me know 👍
What did he do with the little brown washer?
Had a leaking inflow for a couple months, replaced the diaphragm but was still leaking. Bought a new inflow a few weeks back but wasn't feeling very confident to install it. Watched this vid, took old one out and installed new one with no problems. Cheers for the video, was a great help!
Brilliant. Glad it helped
My loo has suddenly started filling in "pulses" after the flush.
Any ideas?
Job i might have to tackle so very handy vid. Should there be washer of some sort in metal connector
Helped me do this job nice and easy cheers Limmy!
Very informative, I feel a lot more prepared to deal with the exact same part. Thanks for the clear instruction on replacing the inlet valve.
Great. Thanks for the comment. Hope it goes well 👍
Thanks for the video , quick question about optima 49 dual flush valve, changed it but I can see there is a thiny line of water still running in the toilet.. could it be inlet fault? Thanks
It could be. The water level could be a little high and flowing into the overflow (into the bowl). You can adjust the level.
If its not the inlet then there is a good chance its the flush mechanism.
Very illustrative - but why are so many handymen showing "how to do" mumbling so that you can hardly hear what they are saying. Makes it less valuable !!!
Thanks for the feedback, hope it helped 👍
Hi, is this fix of replacing the cistern inlet valve applicable for when the water does not rise back into the cistern after flushing the toilet and the button to flush the toilet becomes loose and not workable?
The inlet valve will fill the cistern and stop the water once full.
Hi! I have the same problem but my plumber is saying that to change the fill valve we have to take of the whole toilet! Is that true? Can you help with advice plz?
If its the same toilet you should be able to change the inlet valve unless there is restricted access to it.
You need to remove the cistern to replace the flush mechanism, that's a whole other video.
👍
Thanks mate. Although mine wasn’t as smooth. You guide helped so much.
Brilliant. Glad it helped 👍
Hi Craig,
The inlet valve you mention; It is universal or a specific one used for your toilet? I have a cistern toilet also but I didn’t want to purchase a valve without knowing for sure.
The inlet valve I used is a universal one. It will adjust for height and takes up very little space in the cistern. Should fit most cisterns.
I know how to do this as i just changed the downstairs bog for a new torbeck.
But the upstairs bog is such a crappy design it seems to have no way of doing it without removing the cistern.
These siamp ones work after replacing the diaphragm but fill so bloody slowly i suspect i have a filter in the bottom that is clogged.
Do these siamp inlets have a filter in the bottom that could be clogged?
There may be a filter in there. You have to disconnect the water pipe to get at it. It could also be that the diaphragm is not quite seated properly, probably worth checking that first.
@@handymancraftglasgow The diaphragm is fine i`m certain it is that daft filter now. Looks like i will have to remove the cistern to change it though. Unlike the old toilet downstairs.
Perfect video. Changed the washer last week , £4.99 ! …. A lot cheaper on Amazon ..
Great work!
Thank you.
Cheers man 👍🏻 great vid, even gave a link to the part. Very grateful.
Thank you. Cheers for the comment 👍
hello sir, may i know if i should replace the toilet inlet shut off valves as it is rust and leaking water? is there any video showcasing how to do this? thanks!
Thanks
Hi is the new inlet valve universal? Cheers
Pretty much, as long as your toilet its bottom entry. 👍
Why are you whispering ? 😂
Its a secret shhhh😄👍
Thanks for this and actually taking time to give advice and talking through the stages... 👍
nothing worse than a DIY video with just jingly-jangly bloody ukulele music 🙄
Brilliant. Glad it helped 👍
Just about to fit one of these myself it's a very informative video thank you, just one question though is the red washer you get with the kit used for anything or do you not need it ? Thanks 👍🏻
I never used mine.
Thank you for the wonderfully instructive video. My toilet inlet was exactly the same as the one shown so I could follow your clear instructions step by step. The only question I had was about the red washer, but you answered that in another comment, so thanks.
I must say, having taken the old inlet mechanism apart, it’s not clear what had gone wrong as there are very few moving parts. Plus I had already replaced the membrane so I know that that wasn’t the cause of constant filling. Could it be the washer/seal at the top? And if so, that tiny and accessible part would have been MUCH quicker and easier to replace😃
Generally, if the washer doesn't fix it you as well to replace the valve. Which you did. Brilliant !
You didn’t have to change the whole valve, you could have screwed the new one onto the gray part it’s interchangeable with new fill valve.
This way you can use any brand of fill valve instead of the exact same make. 😀👍
Thank you I fixed it without any help of plumber
Brilliant 👍
Another question if you see this. Is there a way to remove the top cover on this valve ? TYEdit i just watched the video further on that filter is causingme a pain in the arse but my crappy toilet needs the cistern taking off to access it!
I've never taken one apart so can't help you there. If there is a problem, generally easier to just replace. Difficult if access is restricted.
Great video, is there a reason that the inlet valve shut off works with a broken washer/diaphragm but doesn't when it's fixed? Seems weird, the float still lifts up but it just doesn't shut the bottom flow coming out.
Could be the housing containing the washer is not located properly.
Hi Handyman, how do I know which valve to choose? I've got a floating ball thing, makes a really loud noise when it flushed. Doesn't sound good!
You just have to pick one that will fit in the space you have in your cistern. If you have a ball cock valve you will probably have the old flush mechanism this takes up a bit of space. Equally just change the valve like for like. You can still get ball cock valves 👍
I live in the US and am home for a week. My mum's toilet won't fill. Base is flush to wall so no access. Can I unscrew base from floor and pull it away? Guess it had to all be connected before pushing base to wall.
I would look for a consealed opening. Usually you can get into the cistern and there may be a hidden opening somewhere just above the toilet. I doubt pulling the toilet away from the wall will give you access but I know nothing about plumbing in the US.
Hi George, is i possible to just slide off the upper part of the new valve and the old one and use the existing coupling. I have a flush to wall pan and would prefer not to have to move it?
I dont think thats possible.
Can you explain me, how this valve works. I have replaced membrane for new one but valve does not stop water from pouring to tank. Any idea, please ?
Have you tried to adust the float? If the float is too high the water will keep flowing. Lift the float manually and see if it switches the valve off. If it doesn't there is a problem inside the valve. If you changed the diaphragm and still have problems a new valve may be required.
Thanks for this video very clear, I thought at first the seal had gone on the flush mech, but water didn't go into the bowl until it was full, queue inlet valve not stopping the filling process, the arm is fine the water won't stop when I manually lift the raiser, gonna order a new inlet valve now, replace the diaphragm a couple of months ago aswell
Sounds like a good plan👍
thanks so much for this - you've saved me £50 callout!
Brilliant, you will be able to do this for all your friends and family now 😄
Thanks for this. Our water was pulsing rather than a continuous fill and as water is pumped the pump was on and off all the time. Ordered one and problem solved.
Glad it helped👍
Excellent video. totally embarrassed not to have any simple handyman skills.
Can you tell me what size spanner I need to undo the large plastic nut that goes on the outside of the system that holds the inlet valve in place; you start to undo the nut I'm on about at 3:25.
I use an adjustable spanner for those, I think its about 28mm but not entirely sure.
This is the spanner I use but you can get cheaper ones. Just make sure the jaw opens up to at least 30mm.

What else fits a siamp flush valve does anybody know?
Not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate?
Thanks for video ,friend has that problem ,now I know what to do
Brilliant. Glad it helped 👍
I have this system but can't identify where to get the parts. What type of cistern / valve is this?
Its a Siamp Valve. There are some links in the description and Screwfix sell them. Just make sure you have the same make of valve.
Can you send a link for the product you replaced in this video please?
All the latest links are in the description 👍
@ 06:42
What to do if the valve doesn't reach the new inlet valve pipe?
That is a bit more involved. you will have to extend the pipe so it will each. Sometimes just putting in a straight fitting in the pipe is enough to catch. May be worth getting a plumber in, a plumber could do this very quickly.
Exactly what I needed to see thanks, changed and working now.
Brilliant. Glad it helped 👍
This was very helpful, thank you!
Very welcome 👍
Can you whisper a bit more quietly please?
No problem. Will do that on the next vid 😁
Very helpful. With the assistance of this I changed the intake valve and solved my slow fill issue. Thanks!
Brilliant. Glad it helped 👍
Thanx. It was useful for me.
Great. Glad it was useful 👍
Very helpful. Thank you.
No problem. Glad it helped 👍
Nobody’s toilet is this accessible
Except for this one 😊
What is the orange ring as seen in the background of 4:12 for please?
Good question.
The orange ring is a fibre washer to seal between the bottom of the valve and the water connection nut see here ruclips.net/video/oz6z24HciSg/видео.html . The washer will fit in the metal fitting and then tighten the fitting to the valve. The fitting I have (flexible connector) in the video already has a rubber washer built in so the fibre washer wasn't required. If your fitting has a fibre washer then its a good idea to replace it.
@@handymancraftglasgow thanks so much!
Thank you so much for your videos! By far the best on RUclips!
I’ve just used your other video to replace the seal for a slow filling toilet, it fixed it and I’m over the moon!
However as soon as I fixed that it’s now constantly leaking into the toilet bowl so I think I need to follow this video tomorrow and replace the whole valve..
Do you mind me asking if you agree this should be replaced or might i have done something wrong whilst replacing the seal? Thanks again 🙏🏼😁
I would try the seal again. Sounds like it may not be seated properly, double check that small notch. If that doesn't work then a new valve will fix it for sure 👍
@@handymancraftglasgow I tried again, it didn’t work, so I’ve replaced the full thing and now it’s tip too and filling in 30 seconds! Amazing! Thanks so much for your help.. just saved me £80!
That's brilliant. Enjoy your new turbo flush 😁👍
Thanks for sharing this, useful reference point just to reassure myself I was doing the right thing. Helps when you have what certainly looks like the exact same toilet in the bathroom!
Glad it helped. Thanks for the comment 👍
I have the same infill valve as is shown in your video, and would like to replace it with the same one. Would you tell me the make and model please? (I can't see it marked anywhere on the assembly).
The inlet valves are pretty much the same. There is a link in the description for the one I used in the vid but was not identical to the one I swapped out.
If your toilet is connected with a flexible hose or plastic pipe (with a bit of play on the pipe) you will be able to connect. If you are onto copper measure the threaded part of the valve and get a new one with the same length of thread and the swap should go smoothly.
@@handymancraftglasgow Thanks for your reply. That's a help to me. ☺
No problem 👍
I’ve installed a new torbeck bottom fill valve but it is leaking underneath where the plastic white nut screws up to the cistern. Will putting a rubber washer in between the bottom of the cistern and the white nut create a better seal so it doesn’t leak? I’m stuck what to do. The rubber part is fitted on the inside of the cistern correctly, it’s just dripping underneath the cistern where this white nut is.
Sounds like the rubber washer on the inside of the cistern is not located properly or the white nut is not tight enough. Check the washer first, make sure it is in tact and not split and make sure the bottom of the cistern is nice and clean, no grit or dirt. Then tighten the white nut making sure the valve doesn't move from the center of the hole so the rubber is covering as much of the hole as possible. The rubber washer on the inside of the cistern should be enough to seal.
Handyman Craft Glasgow Thanks for the reply. I’ve just took it back off again and noticed that the washer on the old fill valve was flat and not like this new one which is sort of coned. Should I try putting a flat washer on instead do you think like the old one had on and it might seal it better?
You could try it, I actually prefer the conical shaped washers, they usually give a good seal. If the new washer doesn't work try the old one but just remember its an old washer and may not seal up again.
Cheers. Also, the subtitles are hilarious!!
Welcome. I will need to check out those subtitles
Hi mate my toilet inlet valve sensor isn't working correctly (the grey twirly bit doesn't recognise that the water needs to stop at a certain level and water continuously flows into the tank even after changing a ripped washer)
Any ideas what it could be?
Also the inlet valve fills water from the bottom bit in the tank, dont know if that's correct
Sounds like you may need a new valve.
@@handymancraftglasgow my toilet is the same as in the vid
Would it be safe to follow ur video?
Should be but I have no way of knowing for sure.
Great video. Thanks for posting. Same valve as mine abd wandering how to change it. Could it just be the washer. Very very slow refill problem.
If the washer is split at all it will cause a very slow refill.
@@handymancraftglasgow i took it out and inspected and it seemed intact. Looked a bit worn though. I have ordered a replacement and fingers crossed it works.
Hopefully that's your problem.
I literally cannot remove the white nut at the top to save my life. Tried for an hour. Tried using tools. It feels glued on.
Not sure what you mean. The nut sits on the outside of the cistern at the bottom. No nut at the top.
@@handymancraftglasgow I don't know what it's called. But the white plastic part of the top that you can screw off to get to the washer.
When you say top, do you mean the cistern lid?
Wait, are you dealing with a slow filling cistern?
@@handymancraftglasgow sorry, I didn't elbarote. So I'm replacing the inlet valve, however rather than replace the whole thing, id like to just replace the top part that is leaking by replacing the washer inside the twisty nut shaped thing that comes off. I've seen this in other videos. It's so damn hard to take mine off though
thanks for this
Welcome. Hope it helps.
How do I know if I need to change the valve? Mine is overflowing after i changed the diaphragm as this was split. I've adjusted as far as I can but the level still comes over the float and the float doesnt come all the way up. Any ideas?
Make sure the diaphragm is seated correctly and you have lined up the notches. A misalignment can cause this problem 👍
Its definitely lined up properly as no water is coming out of that area now. The part right on the top in this video plugs the hole when water level is full. Mine doesnt move and just seeps water out of it
I've replaced the washer(diaphragm) but the valve on top, can I change this or do I have to buy a new inlet valve
My water level goes past the float
I would deffo open it up. Make sure the washer is seated properly and put back together. If it doesn't work a new valve may be in order.
My toilet is making a very loud vibrating noise when flushed. Am I correct in saying this is the part probably causing it to do that?
Yes. A very good chance its coming from this part.
Thanks for the reply. I am going to give it a go with your vid as soon as the snow melts and I can go out and buy the part!!
Brilliant. Hope it all goes well.
Brilliant. Hope it all goes well.
Great video. Thank you. Exactly the video I was looking for.
Glad it was helpful! 👍
Very clear tutorial, many thanks for this. One question: If I can't find the same kind of fill valve, could I replace it with a different sort, assuming it's still bottom entry and the inlet pipes are a standard/universal size?
Yes you can. Shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure the new unit will fit in the cistern, some are a bit bulkier than others.
Great guide, just done mine, exactly the same, step by step. You can't go wrong and probably saved £60 I bet... 🍻 cheers buddy
Brilliant. Glad it helped you 👍
