I'm just restarting this hobby after my wife passed in August. She hated the smell of cooking fish, so I haven't actively fished in many decades. Things have changed so much. The gear I used to own as a child is now listed on E-bay as 'antique'. That's uncomfortable to find out. Your site has been compelling and completely insightful for getting back to the water's edge and giving this old hobby a new shot. Thank you for all the wonderful videos.
I hope you are doing well Rick, from a fellow Rick and angler. Sorry to hear about your wife, I'm sure she looks down in fondness trying to make the best of life without her.
Just a comment to let you know the time and dedication you put into your videos does not go unnoticed. I know how time consuming it is to create even the simplest video. So thanks for knocking it out of the park yet again.
I've watched hours and probably now, days of fishing videos. This and the companion video around bass returning to their same homing area are both two of the most valuable videos anyone could ever watch on fishing. Your insights and dedication to educating those who enjoy bass fishing is most appreciated. Excellent content!
I can tell you without a doubt that bass and catfish will try to eat soft plastics infused with earthworm extract. I’ve been making my baits with it for years now, and they literally try to swallow the bait. I took a taxidermist buddy of mine fishing a couple years ago, and I would lose a worm on the strike occasionally. My buddy would pitch to the spot and catch the bass in most cases. Nearly every time, he would pull my worm out of the fish’s throat and give it back to me. Lol Dead sticking has also been extremely effective for bass and catfish. I don’t think that the infused scent attracts them necessarily, but I know they sure can taste it once they do bite. A study conducted by Berkley University showed that bass prefer the taste of earthworm over any other flavor that they tried. It literally ranked off the chart. It’s all in the book “Knowing Bass: The Scientific Approach to Catching More Fish” by Keith Jones.
This sounds fine. I have used Berkley PowerBait Bass attractant for a couple of years. Fishing the same spot with the same lure. I have thrown out a soft bait without scent and not gotten hit. Then applied the scent and gotten hit on the first 1-3 casts. After a few cast later no hits, applied scent and the fish hit again. Another possibility could be that bass are only driven by scent at different times. For it to be scientific, the tests would have to replicated with the same results at different times, lake temps and conditions, in different places, etc. . . One or two studies can't be conclusive.
I love the analytical and scientific videos you do and appreciate them so much. Keep up the great work you’re doing Tyler. Bass fisherman are so much better because of you
Very interesting info. I have tried but haven’t put a lot of effort into scented baits or applying scents. This video, the test data, gives me some optimism to try more this season. The tip about no oil based products was a gem. Thank you for sharing and all the effort you put into getting this info out to us all. Well done!
I appreciate the time and effort you put into your videos. You truly are trying to help make others better anglers with your information. Thank you for what you do. You are one of my go to channels for information.
scents can definitely make a difference but some might as well be snake oil. For me they can make the biggest difference when they keep spitting a jig before I can set the hook. After applying scent, they hold onto it long enough to get a good hookset. At the very least, they can also mask human scents and the plastics of artificial baits.
I love these types of videos you do. This is true education about bass/bass fishing and is very unique compared to most other channels. Keep up the great work!
With the fact that bass behavior is controlled also by a 'conditioned response' to a positive or negative experience, it would be interesting to find a study on how effective scents are after a negative experience. Will a scent be as effective at catching a bass the second time around? If not, how long does a bass retain that negative experience. With the amount of use that Max Scent and other scents are getting, do they go from being a positive to a negative after a bass is caught?
Learned this when I got my first and only pack(s) of yamamoto senkos. Everyone said they were the OG senko, so I bought some. Went down a bank I know well in a lake I fish reg, one bluegill nibble. I was smh. Should have been bass in there. Went out to the middle, back to where I started, back to my powerbaits, back down the bank. 5 fish. All legal, one about 3#. It's not a long bank, takes me maybe half an hour to work down it, but I know it very well, so make pretty good time. That was the last time I bought something without Berkely in it. You make good videos bud, keep it up. Love me sum actual data from real thinkin people instead of just, works good for me bro, you'll catch so many fish on this
I just want to shout out a big “Thank You “ for the time, effort, and money to give us this information. One of the most confusing parts of fishing is picking out a line that beat suits your needs. This video was very well thought out and it is now my go to guide when thinking about what line I want on my rods. 😊
I had an old chewed up worm fishing on shore when i was little maybe 30 years ago. There was a school of 6-8" smallmouths there. When i put a drop of dr juice soft craw scent on 10 of them would show up but when the scent wears off, only 2 or 3 would. So i use scent when the bite is tough, but not when they are crushing a spinnerbait.
In very cold water (36°F), I've been noticing a difference between scented lures and strikes and unscented lures. I was fishing for european zander (a walleye cousin).
After a couple of tournaments and other recent experiences I've been using an assortment of different scents recently and trying to find out which one works better for my waters. This is yet another video from you with some really good information, and science based facts and studies. Great Job Tyler!
Butcher Block mineral oil has tiny oil molecules that are so small that they soak into plastic worms and if scented (salt , garlic , shrimp , crawfish , etc ) it will soak in with the oil . I have used a butcher block oil based scent flavored with the above scents that lasts for years in the worms . So effective it is that I have reeled bass to the boat and watched them open their mouth and let go of the worm . They were never hooked and only let go at the last second . I also catch at least a drum , catfish , and carp every time I go . I believe scents applied in the right way where they don't just wash off works great for me . I find it doesn't make much difference on hardbaits however as I have found that sharp hooks work better than scents do .
Here's one to stir the pot... bass dont see braid. Personal experience floro doesn't make a difference. It's cool cuz it sinks but doesn't make a difference to a bass. Add in the no breakoffs, super tough, casts farther I put more fish in the boat with braid
Buy a bag of shrimp use the juices for sent and you will not regret it. April is my year for bass fishing and I always use shrimp juice. It works very well use a syringe poke. Any soft plastic with the syringe put some juice, shrimp juice inside any soft plastic you don’t even need to jig as soon as they smelled the shrimp they were going to down it try it you won’t regret it
All my years spending money on sent some old guy told me about the bag of shrimp ever since I used it I always had more luck. I live in Buffalo New York smallmouth bass in lake Erie, love shrimp specially the largemouth that’s if you could keep the catfish away.
I was just talking about this the other day with my buddies.I’m a big believer in maxscent it might not draw the bite but I believe they hold it longer once they got it.I’m confident in it and I think ultimately it comes down to what your confident in to be successful.
Very awesome more videos like this and your new flourocarbon line test are what i look for mostly. Unboxings are cool but when you get in trouble for ordering too much tackle i prefer this type of info. Well done!
I really enjoy your videos... u not only have very educational and enjoyable videos to watch but u speak and explain everything in a way that everyone can understand... keep up the great work.... 👍
First and foremost I just want to say great video keep it up. I really enjoyed the style of video and would definitely love to see more of these in the future.
I will always put scent on my soft plastics, I've literally out fished someone standing next to them fishing the exact same rig, worm, hook and weight. Only difference was I was using scent.
I have used a sharpie to paint the tails of my baby bass senkos black and it does make a difference. I assume this is mostly a sight angle but the bass do seem to like it more than regular senkos 😉
Nothing to do with this video just a question and or suggestion to try. This is for the senko wacky worm set up. You can buy different color shrink wrap that you use on electrical wire. Like different color jig heads, if you slide a very thin piece of it 4 or 5 times the width of your hook in the color you want to the center and heat just enough to grab it,it will help losing or having to worry about the senko tearing as much and you have the benefit of adding color if you prefer.
Wow. What a great video. Your time is much appreciated. I use scent on my plastics all the time and my husband does not...guess who catches more fish! Yup...me.
I've used oil based and I'm a believer in both scents and oil. Have u put oil on anything? It does not just wash off. Spraying scent in my bags and letting them marinate I also apply some pressure to the soft plastics exposing the salt and the oil I'm sure penetrates. Absolutely no way it all just washes off hitting the water.
Thanks for the reenforced info ! I totally agree with the findings through years of my results also !! Even in salt water scent is important ! I have dipped small strips of cloth in squid juice and caught flounder and croakers because of the same smell as squid ! Freshwater from bass to trout to walleyes scented baits and lures will definitely get more looks and pickup than the same baits unscented ! So thanks again for your affirmations !
Appreciate the video. Really interesting. I was expecting the results to be contradictory to my experience, but I was wrong. I often fish the same spots at the same time of day, particularly when I have only 2-4 hours to fish. Last week I started collecting some data of my own. I generally re scent my plastics once every 10 casts or so, but the first cast after applying scent is when I catch 75% of my smallmouth Bass. Now I gotta go read the ingredients of my scent and see if it's oil based or not, but will probably be re-scenting every 5 casts or so moving forwarrd.
I believe there is something to what Berkeley does I have used smelly jelly and don't know if it is what made the difference or I just got around fish. If you are not around them it really doesn't matter what bait or scent or little secret hacks on baits. You can't catch what you are not around!
Alot of my fishing I use mono and still have great results! I do use braid to fluorocarbon leader for my spinning setup's though.... great video I agree with you, it's been pounded in our brain's that mono isn't the answer anymore!
I really enjoy these types of insights in your videos! You and Debo are probably my top two RUclipsrs I pay attention to when it comes to bass fishing. Keep up the great work!
@4 4 0 - fisherman (d rock) I've watched a lot of their videos, but found I didn't enjoy their long run times and felt like they were almost too detailed to the point I felt like I was getting lost trying to understand their content. Maybe I'll try again when our lakes thaw this spring. I just really enjoy what Tyler brings to his videos and the way that he produces them.
I don't why but those powebaits pitboss sure do work & the Berkely scientist hit the mark with them well only a certainly colors. I luv ya content. Let's go Buckeyes , I do miss the mistake on the lake. But is runs deeply in my veins. Tight lines & give em hell on ya up coming tournaments.
The most thorough study done on the use of scent was done more than 20 years ago by Dr. Keith Jones. Everything you talk about in this video has already been discovered. Dr Keith Jones wrote a book titled "Knowing Bass". In this book he very thoroughly covers the use of scent and different types as well as debunking several myths about scent. He also invented Power Bait and Berkeley Gulp. His information is derived from his several years of original research involving multiple studies. These studies were specifically focused on a basses response to various scents.
That is a really neat study! I've had enough luck on the water using scents to know they work but had no clue about the "oil" specific issue. Thanks for the lesson on that!
Hi! Great tests. Please could you add elastic recovery as this would indicate how long the line would last after being stretched, whereas mono or nylon is extremely elastic.
I don’t know anything but in my time on the water, I tend to think bass are mostly visual, feel, and reactionary feeders. A lot of times when I’m not getting hit but you got hogs on the graph, I use some scent and start getting hit. I have also found fish might hang on a bit longer. That makes me think that when they aren’t feeling your lures or falling for the visual reaction or feel of your lure, then the scent might make them commit.
True.the old time surf fisherman would drill a hole in a redfin or bomber and fill with medhaden oil.then plug with piece or wood.this helped make the lure run deeper in rough surf plus slowly released scent
Depends on the scent and the pressure with that scent and time of year etc. sometimes it works other times I’ve seen it doesn’t. Last few years gulp waxies worked great on bluegill, but this year they only touch maggots… I noticed there are no maggots in the stores here…. Often times I slay fish with a scent is when I use a scent that is not common in the area.
I've used oils shoulder to shoulder, and I caught enough fish that the surrounding anglers were asking what's in the bottle. I often catch more than a limit worth of fish and not many skunks. Although, I don't really use it for bass. Maybe the fish are less likely to spit out the bait if they taste the oil. Idk, but I will continue using it.
The Berkley Gulp scent has made a difference for me, especially noticeable in the cold water months. I have definitely seen an increase in the amount of bites when using the Berkley Gulp scent or other Berkley scented products versus not using scent when the bite is tough
Many years ago did a study with a marine biologist (from mystic marine) on scents for bass, we concluded that Bang garlic produced the most bites consistently. The liquid not the spray. The garlic oil dissolves in water, lasts a long time and tastes like fish blood which made the fish hold on more by thinking the bait was bleeding. Awesome video Tyler
Something about garlic makes fish eat. When I use to raise aquarium fish, there was a product that was garlic scented made to help fish eat. When my fish stopped eating I would soak the food in the garlic and they would start eating immediately
would like to make a note that oil based scents still work as i can assume they can taste oil. anise extract which is an oil helps the fish hold on longer. fish will bite a cold solid item that smells/tastes like the oils on our hand vs a naturally occurring scent like anise extract
There is a good chance that even oily scents work. If there is something that is infused in the oil and it can be dissolved in water it probably will. Some will also probably work it's way into the plastic.
Thanks Ty... Again, Bass Nerds Unite. Appreciate you being diplomatic and not name-dropping... wonder if i can put all my stick worms in the ground with a couple hundred nightcrawlers and see if the natural scent is absorbed...
Good stuff! Studies, facts, and science applied to time on the water is it. "Secret' techniques and the 'newest and best' lures fill RUclips channel contributor and manufacturer coffers. We need to concentrate on fish behavioral science and not all the myths and hype out there. Thank you.
so does garlic scent work? and if i crush garlic is the scent from terpenes>? terpenes are oil based so does it work in water> I NEED THE ANSWERS how do i get proper scent!!!
Great job Tyler! I think these educational videos are awesome. Definitely can see the time and effort you put it these videos. Keep them coming. I think your channel is one the best out there!
First off, I love these more scientific based videos. Another thing I’ve always arbitrarily and halfway seriously though was can the scent of something on my hand transfer to my bait and actually deter fish? I wondered this because in deer hunting, you have to be very careful to control scent as to not deter them….does the same thing apply with bass?
My buddy and I already proved that scent work. We fished all day long with the same exact jig, same pound test same everything. I put scent on my jig, he did not. My buddy almost always out fishes me because he’s been bass fishing for way way longer. This day was very tough and after 10 hours of fishing I caught 13 bass, some really nice ones too 3-4 pounders, and my buddy caught 5. And his were only 1 pound max. This definitely proves that bigger pickier fish and more fish in general are going to bite something with scent on it, especially if it’s slow moving.
My brother and I used to fish together. Every thing seemed to be the same but once he could not buy a fish while I could not fish away. He had filled up the boat with gasoline and got some on his hands AND steering wheel. After washing his hands in the boat his catch picked up. After lunch he picked up the smell from steering wheel and catch stopped. Keep your hands clean
Thanks Tyler for facts!!!! Dr. Jones publish his finding (with permission from Berkley) in 2002. I appreciate Tyler, calling it out and not mincing words. For a bass to smell something it must be water soluble (FULL STOP). When I found this out, I had a hard time believing it. I always worried about gas on my hands, etc. So water soluble scents MIGHT catch fish, but oil based scents only catch fishermen. The problem then becomes keeping the scent on the bait and in a focused enough way to direct the fish properly. Jones spent a big chunk of his in Spirit Lake, IA (Berkley's home base) wrestling with this. Gulp was one of the big results. I have no facts about gulps effectiveness, but if I ever use any scents, it is usually gulp.
FINN Fishing Gear - rebrand.ly/FinnFishing
I'm just restarting this hobby after my wife passed in August. She hated the smell of cooking fish, so I haven't actively fished in many decades. Things have changed so much. The gear I used to own as a child is now listed on E-bay as 'antique'. That's uncomfortable to find out. Your site has been compelling and completely insightful for getting back to the water's edge and giving this old hobby a new shot. Thank you for all the wonderful videos.
Sorry to hear about your loss. I’m only 19 and I use gear from 72 so you’re not that old lol
I hope u heard of catch & release u shouldn't be eating bass anyway if your a fish eater, don't even fish
How it's going Rick?
I hope you are doing well Rick, from a fellow Rick and angler. Sorry to hear about your wife, I'm sure she looks down in fondness trying to make the best of life without her.
Don’t matter what you have… go fishing! And just release em for you wife, make her happy and smile in heaven waiting on you man!! Keep your faith!
Just a comment to let you know the time and dedication you put into your videos does not go unnoticed. I know how time consuming it is to create even the simplest video. So thanks for knocking it out of the park yet again.
Thanks for the kind words man!
Absolutely I have always noticed that

about to say they need to conduct this same test in 10 other lakes for it to actually conclusive.
Thats that we call a small sample size
Yep, and I've done tests several times and very random... still no concrete proof. If the fish aren't biting, an attractant never made a difference.
I love the analytical and scientific videos you do and appreciate them so much. Keep up the great work you’re doing Tyler. Bass fisherman are so much better because of you
Loving the return to the science videos! Really what sets you way above most other fishing channels...
Gotta say I swear by Gulp
They are time consuming but very enjoyable to make at the same time
Very interesting info. I have tried but haven’t put a lot of effort into scented baits or applying scents. This video, the test data, gives me some optimism to try more this season. Your way of explaining this study was absolutely incredible. Thanks man! Awesome vid

This is the comment. The only reason sent matters, they may hold onto it longer.

Great video bud. I definitely enjoy seeing studies like this.
First and foremost I just want to say great video keep it up. I really enjoyed the style of video and would definitely love to see more of these in the future.
These new docuvidoes are fire! Thanks for your hard work!

My experience exactly.
All I throw is power bait generals, I can attest to this.
I like the effort the researchers put in to make sure they could re-release the bass.
Killer video man!! Well put together. Enjoy these ones no doubt.
Great work and very insightful study results. You are doing the fishing community a great service. Thank you!
Wow. What a great video. Your time is much appreciated. I use scent on my plastics all the time and my husband does not...guess who catches more fish! Yup...me.
Dawn for the WIN! - 613BASS'N

Great video! I have been using scents for decades and always felt they helped generate a few more bites.
Another absolutely amazing video. Thank you for taking so much time to edit and break down these studies.
I learn so much on the technical side. Thank you, sooo much for your efforts 👋🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿💯 👌🏿

Love these educational videos that go beyond fishing good work Tyler
Alot of my fishing I use mono and still have great results! I do use braid to fluorocarbon leader for my spinning setup's though.... great video I agree with you, it's been pounded in our brain's that mono isn't the answer anymore!
I love all your videos but specifically the study videos! Hope to see more of these so I can nerd out :D
I really enjoy these types of insights in your videos! You and Debo are probably my top two RUclipsrs I pay attention to when it comes to bass fishing. Keep up the great work!
No tacticalbassin !?!?!?! You're missing out dog
@4 4 0 - fisherman (d rock) I've watched a lot of their videos, but found I didn't enjoy their long run times and felt like they were almost too detailed to the point I felt like I was getting lost trying to understand their content. Maybe I'll try again when our lakes thaw this spring. I just really enjoy what Tyler brings to his videos and the way that he produces them.
you got a sub! Going to check out the merch! Great Video Thanks
Another Awesome video !!!
Great Job - as always!!!
That is a really neat study! I've had enough luck on the water using scents to know they work but had no clue about the "oil" specific issue. Thanks for the lesson on that!
What is a scent example other than an oil based one?
Im lost
Also, I’ve heard of a lot of old school anglers would drill tiny holes into their crank baits etc. and fill with scent?
True.the old time surf fisherman would drill a hole in a redfin or bomber and fill with medhaden oil.then plug with piece or wood.this helped make the lure run deeper in rough surf plus slowly released scent
Look at you sounding all scientific!! Fascinating video brother! Thanks for the thought provoking content.
In saltwater fishing, years ago old school anglers swore by cod liver oil on their baits.. Probably a confidence\placebo thing since it was oil based.
Love this style of video, very informative and concise. Keep em coming!
with the oil based scents I see your point about smell since it's not water solvable however if it's on a bait they would be able to taste it
I've used oils shoulder to shoulder, and I caught enough fish that the surrounding anglers were asking what's in the bottle.
I have definitely seen an increase in the amount of bites when using the Berkley Gulp scent or other Berkley scented products versus not using scent when the bite is tough
same here. its extremely effective with surfperch.
Absolutely!!!
Tempted to get the berkly gulps, and a sturdier plastic container just to dip baits in lol
Guys - silicone zip lock bags. You're welcome
@@M.Y.adventures I agree, my catch rate when using garlic has greatly increased
@@M.Y.adventures - Yup, was going to say the same thing about keeping saltwater fish and using garlic soaking to stimulate feeding.
I've always found garlic scent by far out produces all others
@Brent Spencer same. I tried bait fuel last year but I didn't feel the same bite that garlic did.
would like to make a note that oil based scents still work as i can assume they can taste oil. anise extract which is an oil helps the fish hold on longer. fish will bite a cold solid item that smells/tastes like the oils on our hand vs a naturally occurring scent like anise extract
Amazing video! Helps so much more to understand fish biology!
There is a good chance that even oily scents work. If there is something that is infused in the oil and it can be dissolved in water it probably will. Some will also probably work it's way into the plastic.
The oil molecule as a carrier is too large to be accepted by a fish's olfactory receptors
Thank you for your scientific study. This truly appreciated and interesting.
Great video, Finn. You hit it on the head!!
Thank you.
Thank you! Thats what I am going for!
so does garlic scent work? and if i crush garlic is the scent from terpenes>? terpenes are oil based so does it work in water> I NEED THE ANSWERS how do i get proper scent!!!
I LOVE this vid. Thx for the amazing information!!
NEXT ON NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC.
Geez dude you’re putting out some gold. We’re lucky to have you man. 🍻
Wonder how much of our scent rubs off on our lures when we tie, re-tie, etc
Explain Gulp! Im the biggest skeptic that anyone could try to convince I work at a bait n tackle store and have seen the results so theres that!
Great job Tyler! I think these educational videos are awesome. Definitely can see the time and effort you put it these videos. Keep them coming. I think your channel is one the best out there!
very interesting, thank you for the hard work putting this togethor.
9:52 shows pole with functioning hook keeper on it and jig head hooked into the foam handle. 😂
I use mega strike garlic or yum garlic...It certainly helps them hold on longer
Spray scents have the taste factor that are oil based, I like bang I have used it for years and have seen that it makes a differance
@Bassfishinghq0 how do I proceed
Tyler what size Trokar tube hook do you use on a 4 to 41/2 inch tube? Will a size 3 cover it ok or should I go bigger?
