For us northern folk, we call it "running a stinger" when jigging walleyes. Keep the main hook and run a size 8-10 treble on a pre tied piece of braid aka "stinger hook" and it'll change your life. When we Jigs we let the hook free swing but when we're casting we'll one hook it back into the body. Works well for threaded on live bait as well. 👊
Absolute game changer! I fish swimbaits 50% of the time and I can attest, short strikes are very common. Best believe this will be my set up on my next trip. Thanks for sharing!
My future rig also.
Yeah, for me it’s about 1 fish outta 5 hits. Some days worse, some days better. It can get frustrating for sure.
Really cuz I've lost a single fish on a squadron head and five inch rage swimmer and it wasn't a short striker it jumped and spit it
I wish I would have seen this a week ago. I was fishing a spinner bait with a paddle tail swim bait attached. Upon retrieving the bait through the muck, a huge boil occurred right at the boat and the swim bait was bitten off exactly where you placed the treble hook! Thanks for a great tip!
Thank you. I always wondered about how efficient the hook was with the traditional rigging of the swim bait. This definitely addresses the obvious issue with a short strike.
If you've thrown a five inches rage swimmer the fish swallow them whole
This is outstanding info, and I don’t care who may have done it first, you’re showing us now, thanks for the awesome tip!
That was awesome Randy. I never thought about doing that and I appreciate you telling us. Great video.
Thanks you are the first bass guy I've seen doing this. Us walleye guys have been doing it for years to get the short bites. Awesome tip. 👌
Yup, just use a stinger.
I've been making this trap rig for hailbut. After I get the proper length, I use duo locks. Then I can add them to the eye, and change my grub, or swimbaits accordingly. Each size if bait, get their own sets of traps....pre- made. No time loss on water rigging. Hope this helps someone.
Yeah, we call that a "Rat Trap" here in the Channel Islands... Halibut killer.
Another really great tip, Randy. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome, that’s the first time I’ve ever seen this. That’s the real deal. Thanks for sharing your years of fishing wisdom.
Excellent thinking. Definitely goingf to change the way I rig my soft swim baits and even plastic worms. Thanks.
Wow Randy Thanks for the Tip. I was fishing Big Joshy's with a normal weighted head just today and lost 3 or 4 fish because they were only biting the tail. I'm definitely going to be trying this out.
Thank you Randy,.. Ive been following you since you went under bridges in Buggs Island (Kerr Resv). I realize how valuable a "Secret" rig or bait truly is. and I signed up today.. Looking forward to watching you! Bob W.
Thanks again Randy. You are the best! Much brotherly love.
1st time I’ve seen this. Thanks. Hope I don’t get too many pros mad at you. Thanks Randy
I usually use this rig when fishing for pike. You can also prep varying lengths in advance with loops at the end. Instead of attaching it directly to the jig-head, you can simply hang it in the snap with your jig-head. Also I leave the jig's hook intact. This way I can use shorter jigs to allow for more play in my baits while also reducing dead strikes due to the stinger which is changeable and the rig stays adjustable when I change my bait's size. When fishing for pike I use a wire leader. A good way to circumvent the use of jig-heads for shallow fishing is to use screws and 1-2 stingers depending on the size of the lure. Some screws come with adjustable weights but you can also use pear shaped weights to hang in the snap to adjust to the situation.
Thanks, Randy for your tips, and thanks for being a person who is selfless with his time.
Great advice as always Randy! Well done. 👊🏼
That’s a little something new that I haven’t seen as far as modification on a swim bait. Cool video
Great tip thanks for taking the time to share it.
Thanks for making us better fishermen and fisherwomen Randy! Appreciated.
Butch brown rig, been around for ages. I find it easier to control the length if you tie off to the line tie first, then tie the treble on.
I’ve never heard of Butch Brown
@@randyblaukatintuitive Few have, he’s a California swimbait pioneer, he rigs his hudds this way.
@@SBD813 how does someone love bass fishing,is a long time professional, and hasn't heard of Butch? Guy was all over magazines and articles with his huge 50 lb bags for years...smh doesn't make sense
@@dontnonowuno9953 I’m not surprised, the whole swim bait scene is very niche, swimbaiters seem to live in a bit of a bubble.
@@billwhite7099 naw that was Mike Long.Butch was a pioneer of the big trout swim baits in Cali and has actual video catches of 50-60 lb sacks
It may be time consuming initially but you can use the rig over and over. The thing you have to do is keep checking the line from the eye to the hook and change if becomes worn or nicked.
That's one of the best tips Randy has done on his videos. Endless possibilities. Thank you Randy.
Thanks!!! I've been having a BIG problem with short strikes on swimbaits. I will definitely try that mod!
That is one of the best tips I have seen on RUclips. Thanks for sharing.
Great tip! If I may add too, rig your swim jig as normal. Tie a Palomar knot to the jig head leaving the existing hook on, tie your treble hook to the tag end of the Palomar knot and insert treble hook accordingly. 😊👍🏻
That's more like it.
That sounds like an awesome idea I will have to try soon ! Thanks Alot !
Sounds good but I'm thinking dip the tag back in the bait with a needle and out the tail then add the tribel hook at the tail
I was wondering why you wouldn't leave the hook on the jig head? Seems like a person would have 4 hooks rather than 3. Plus you've added a short knot to lure and seems risky to gamble on this?
@@julienichols4188 I think the reason he cut off the hook is because as he explained it he does not want the lure in the fish's mouth when he hooks it.
I really appreciate the tip! It's a very practical application and I will be in touch with the results!
Just want to thank you for the humble opening on the subscription ask. That alone sold me.
Bro u just blew my mind I was hoping someone would invent a swim bait with a treble on the back!!!! JUICE!!
Great info and thanks for sharing.
WOW!! incredible Randy.... thank you
Ok I have to try this. Thanks for sharing.
Randy if I could only show people how far Iv came from watching you and just a handful of other serious angler's over the past 3 years. Jacked my 3rd 20in smallie of the year today, caught it on a flashy swimmer with a 3in spark shad(ayu) using my St. Croix 6ft 8 mhf paired with abu garcia revo x on 12lb suffix elite. Im still so jacked , caught on second cast of the morning. Randy I felt the moment. I knew it was about to happen . I pictured in my head wg=hat was about to happen and it did. Now I had no ideal it was goin to be another 5#r but she was. Dude I promise you put these tips and things to practice. And there SHOULD be a bunch of hard days, hell there always will be. But when it pays off, oh what a feeling. Thanks for sharing all the juice Randy, some of us really need it.
Hey Todd, what model st croix? I fish out of the kayak and love my 6’8” mojo bass MF.
Yes its the Mojo, that I have as well. What an amazing rod! What reel do you have on your Mojo?
I do this on flukes, never tried on a swim bait, but it makes perfect sense. Your channel is great. Keep sharing this great info
Great tip🌟.Thanks 💡 I was looking for it like for years.Im loosing big smallies often. Not so much issues with smaller size ones.Eventhough Iwas experienced changing hooks and fishing rod. Definitely I'm going to try very soon .Next week perhaps..That's the best time to get those big 5 and over five# smallies early in the spring on the swimbait thank you .My favorite bait to target the big Mammas.😊
Subscribed firstly because you come across as a straight talker & secondly because you know what you are on about.
Great tip Randy. Will definitely give this a try.
Thank you Sir, this seems like a great concept.
Awesome channel. Practical to learn
Thanks for the great ideas.I think I'll try that.
Awesome !!! Thanks, Randy !!!!
Thnx for this video very informative.
Iv seen some pike rigs like this on other channels but was never taught how to make them. Thanks again.
Wow. Now that is some great secret sauce! Amazing share bud!
Thank you! Definitely gna give this a try with my paddle tail swim baits
We use this rig all the time when fishing for pikes. Due to the bigger swimbaits we leave the jig head intact and just add the stinger. Instead of clipping the hook of the Okashira jig head you could also use screw in heads (e.g. Gunki g'fish screw from 3/16 all the way up to 1oz)
that's what i was thinking ......why not just leave the main hook intact ..🤷♂ (half a rookie angler) but my thoughts are wouldn't you also lose more baits if you cut the main hook off .. I know there's usually a wire barb keeper but the hook would help hold the bait to the head (just Thinking out loud )
@@djradrs199 thats what i was mainly concerned about is losing my swim baits because im not a pro and have them given to me lol they r kinda pricey now days..
@@C-Smith-87 agreed !! i'm not into pouring lead,, but i do paint the pre made stuff because it's fun and a lil cheaper ,,, wife found a BRAND NEW (with the warranty card and manual) mini toaster oven at a thrift store for $9.00 to bake the jig head after powder painting them ,,, watched sdg custom lure craft channel and copied his fluid bed set up (SWEET SET UP) and the guy is a master lure maker !! couple parts from home depot and a $10 aquarium pump off amazon WA LA ... it's fun and I just make stuff for my own use .... I also thought ??? why not just leave the hook on !!... ( AFTER I LOST 2 HEADS WHEN THE FISH CAME UP AND SHOOK THEM OFF AND SENT THEM FLYING ) LOL LOL ...
@@djradrs199 i have always wanted to do something like that and pour my own soft plastics but the molds are deff an investment $$ but 8m sure 8n the long run and you fish a lot it will pay for itself soon. And 100% agree with leaving the jig hook on
Picasso Lures has some great Screw-In Heads.
That was a hard core tip thanks Randy
Been doing this my entire life. Works great 👍
Great tip, hard core !🙂
I really enjoy this rigging series you've been doing
Excellent video man!
Great information 😊
Showing some love !!! 💙💚💜
Thank you you are very informative I appreciate that I am trying to get back into fishing so every little bit of info helps
Very cool, thanks!
Guys do that up north with hand tied walleye jigs. Awesome. Thanks Randy!!!
Awesome video thanks
Wow thanks! I've been missing fish for a long time and just couldn't figure out why. I'm definitely going to subscribe and like. And now I can watch all of your videos.
Very interesting. Thanks!
That’s a cool tip. Many Thanks
Thank you I can wait to try this What a Great Idea
I've never seen this in bass fishing but it makes perfect sense. There are a lot of non-redundant fail points at the same time though worth mentioning. The knots would need to be 110% perfect 3 times on same rig, that's the only thing I'd be concerned about and once hooked you don't exactly have a direct line feel right to the fish if that makes sense.
Great Idea. Thanks
Thanks for the tip.
I like it, thanks a lot. Subscribed!
Another good tip Randy!
Thank you great tip
Thank you for ur knowledge, experience & wisdom !! What u GIVE can turn an average angler into a good to a competitive angler if u intake and apply!! equal to 10 or more years of personal experience on the pond! I appreciate ur gifts of techniques and ur honesty.
Sincerely. Catch'em up this year you are deserving God bless you and ur family Sir
Thx Rick!
Neat! Will give it a go.
Great tip. You can also trim a bit off the top of the bait, which will allow the hook sit lower on the bait.
Thanks Randy good stuff ....
Great tip! Haven’t been able to get it tied yet but will keep trying
I love it and now anxious to try. Fellow midwestern angler here in IL and have been dying to get to Table Rock and more. Ill be in touch soon!!
Nice RANDY!
Excellent
We’ve been doing something similar, found with speckled trout, we have to use larger test line. They are toothy and treble hooks tend to snag deeper into the throat of trout with the line going across their teeth. I tried using like a trailer hook around shank of jig hook with mixed results. It tends to stiffen the action of plastic.
Same here for Speckled Trout. I used a trailer hook for a while, but found that I was catching a lot of small trout that couldn't reach the jig head hook , the reason for the short strike,, so I went back to only using the jig head without a trailer hook.
I stopped using treble hooks in the salt for the reason you list, plus getting hooks bent on larger fish.
Good one Randy !
That’s so great! An additional tip since you’re already altering it, is to wrap some dental floss around the jig neck and add a drop of superglue before sliding on the lure.
I’m a new subscriber. Thanks for the vid! Tight lines!
Thanks man!!!
Also stumbled upon your channel recently and really enjoy the content. 👍
My trout rid is much like this and it's a killer. I use a gold Aberdeen to nose hook a 2" rubber critter with the treble in trail like you have. A split shot 8" up the line. Never thought to up size it.
this is awesome
Great tip!
Good info
Nice informative video. I've always left the main jig head hook in and ran the treble back. There are some hacks for that as well, thanks for explaining why you should clip the jig hook! Love all your video's, if I ever run into in Kenosha or Racine I've got paranormal experience/encounter for you! Cheers, Jim!
Awesome tip…
very good idea
Great Rig Man
Hey Randy. Great video. Awesome tip. Thank you.
I have a question. I like to take the smaller swimbaits and hook them up sideways. I don't really know if it helps but it doesn't hurt. I see it as the tail is going side to side rather than up or down. What is you thoughts on this as I was catching hell from a friend of mine for this. Lol
Thanks my guy
Nice.... like this tip.
Good tip.
Hey nice vid man I wish you the best have a great year
This is great
I honestly thought I was subscribed, I have been watching for months. I am for sure subscribed now with notifications on. Great tip thanks for the video.
Thx man!
I will most certainly try this method, I also love to use a trailing hook setup, adding a second hook to that single hook in the plastic paddle tail... It gets them every time, trying to nip the tail off 😁
So creative
Yup. Works well up here in New Hampshire
So true. I fish for Speckled Trout & Redfish & I have no idea how many times they just bite off my swim bait tails.
I use the same hack now. It works
