very helpful guide! In the future I'll be switching from my old fat PS3 and going to a slim. What I'm gonna do is the following: Get a 160gb slim, TRON Powerstation, and 750gb hard drive. Before i turn on the slim even, I'll trick it out with all that, instal the update, then use data transfer utility to transfer my old data from the old ps3 to the new one with its 750gb hard drive :) thoughts?
so say i have a 128GB flash drive , would that be sufficient to backup my data (game data, downloaded game data, and save data) provided i had enough that so that it doesnt excede the capacity of the flash drive ?
Make sure you back up saved data separately and psp data etc copy and paste them into harddrive

Hey do you know when you back up if...your purchased games are backed up aswell so that you don't have to redownload them?
I used a program called easus partition mater home edition and formated my external hard drive with it and then my ps3 recognized the full capacity. Backup good

if you use your friends accounts to download some of their things do you have to completely redownload all of those again? or will everything be there when its said and done?

We can now save our game saves online from the PS3 which was in the last firmware (3.60) but it's only for us people who have PS+ so thats a little bonus ;-) check out the official PS blog you should be able to find out more about there but it's a couple of days old now so you might have to look for that post.

I just bought a 500 gb hdd so that I can put it in my 160 PS3 system. I bought a external HDD called DYNEX. I keep going to backup format and than click format than It says Connect Storage media at the save destination.

I backup my PS3 slim (WD Blue 500GB) to 1TB HDD from my PS4 HDD. It took literally 17 hrs just to backup 210 GB of data!! But when i restored back to my PS3 slim (swapping back in my original PS3 500GB HDD), it took only 6hrs total. Strange.
That's because reading and writing are different speeds on hdds
your suppose to be able to use any 2.5" 5400rpm sata HD in other words laptop harddrive ive heard 7200rpm drives work too but the ps3 does not read it as such it reads it at no more than 5400 so it doest matter to get the 7200
my PS3 hard drive is 40GB, and I have an USB flashdrive formatted to FAT32, USB is 64GB, enough to backup an entire data from an 40GB HDD, and what I am planning to do, is to transfer to another HDD that I am going to replace to an 1TB HDD, now here is the BIG question:

I have a 1TB MyPassport HD which I've formatted to FAT-32. My PS3 doesn't seem to recognize it. Most guides I've read online haven't really shed light on why this may be. Has anyone ran into similar issues? I had to buy a new cord because the HD wasn't getting enough power but now it is (the light on it stays lit), so I'm not sure what else the issue might be.
Open up google, search for this keyword, "FAT32Format(PS3)". Had the same problem with yours. Works 100%
Thats an exe file, a program that formats your external hdd to ps3's fat32 format.

How do you buy External HDDs already formatted to FAT32? Most purchased HDDs are formatted to NTFS. If you format them to FAT32, you can only have 30GBs max. I need more GBs than that to backup my PS3.

There is a bunch of External HDDs on Amazon that are already set up for FAT32. A specific one for the PS3 as well. I just ordered one.

Tom Paris it takes longer if you have more data to back up, I had 140 gb to back up and it took 4 hours
I have a 1.5TB HDD on my PS3 and it works just fine. About to put a 2TB in, because a storm came through and now is making HDD act funny.
It may not be a memory issue, the system could just be acting strange and he wants to restore.
ur map packs are on your psn account it dont matter if you wipe the hdd completely has long as the ps3 still starts lol

64gb USB flashdrives do no work on the ps3 it reads up to 32gb if you got more on the ps3 you screwed delete stuff(this is if you use a usb drive or want to)
i recommend you remove the mandatory game installs and leave the downloadable content.
I forgot to mention that I have external power supply for the external HDD.

You Have to Format it to FAT 32
DAVID veilleux even when it is formatted to fat32 sometimes it still won’t work... what you need to do then is try to format it to fat32 on another operating system. That is what worked for me
