  • Hey! How You Doin'?
    This video walks you through the ENTIRE process of upgrading your Playstation 3 Hard Drive.
    I realize that the video is a bit long, but I believe it's all-inclusive and provides all the information you'll need to perform a successful upgrade.
    A quick outline of the steps are:
    • Obtaining software to format a FAT32 external drive to backup your PS3.
    • A discussion about what internal Hard Drive to choose for your upgrade.
    • Backing up your PC to an external drive.
    • Physically swapping the Hard Drive
    • Booting the PS3 into a hidden menu to format and system restore to the new drive.
    • Restoring your backup to the new drive.

    Just wanted to let people know that i followed this video every single step of the way and everything worked exactly as it should have and i installed a Toshiba 500gb 7200 rpm hdd and it works splendidly. I believe it even decreased the loading times a little also no problems with heat at all. In fact it runs cooler than it did with the default drive. (which is a 5400 rpm drive) Any problems people may have with their ps3 over heating are more than likely because they do not have the ps3 laid flat or horizontal on a hard surface with at least 3 inches of open air on all 4 sides of it (also helps to have some space above it). Also don't forget that all electronics with fans used to keep them cool will get clogged with a shit load of dust. So you need to clean out the dust on these bad boys at least once every two years unless you have your ps3 in a very dust free environment. I live in a very dusty environment and actually clean out my computer at least once every couple of months my ps3 i don't clean more than once every 6 months.

    Just updated my PS3 from 120GB to a 1TB hard drive. Followed the video, and it worked perfectly. Nothing wrong with the old HD except that I was completely out of room. Since the other took me about 6 years to fill, this should pretty much last me as long as I keep the system or it completely dies. Thanks for the awesome instructions!

    All steps still work perfectly! Just completed the whole process now. Used the same 1TB Hard Drive showed on the video. Had much more data on my system, so both backup and restore took almost 5 hours (for a total of 10 hrs + handling time). Thanks for the help. Very useful!

    awesome video, thank you very much! you helped me on every step on the way.
    a tip for people who have both ps4 and ps3 - if you want to change your ps3 drive to 500GB don't overpay - buy 1TB drive from Amazon for $67, put it in your PS4 (extra space will come handy with all these games in the future!) and put the brand new 500GB drive that came in with PS4 to PS3! this way you'll save the money and buy one drive instead of two - for ps3 and ps4.
    disregard this comment if you don't have ps4 and/or you need more than 500 gb of space on your ps3. thanks again for an awesome video.

    I'm about to upgrade my Ps3 slim 120GB to a 1TB HD. And I'm still watching the video, so sorry if you said this at the video, but I wanna know if the external drive needs to be formated for the backup to be done. I mean, if my external drive is already FAT 32 but containing some files, is that gonna be a problem with the PS3 backup? Thx

    • @DvdXploitr
      @DvdXploitr 10 лет назад +3

      as long as you have enough space to back-up your files, you don't have to format your hard drive for backing up...the only things you have to be sure of, #1, the drive you back-up to is in FAT32 format....#2 the drive you back-up to has enough space....the drive you put in the console is the one that gets formatted

    • @ConradoLusa

    Just updated my PS3 Slim with a 1TB 72000 drive everything seems ok, it doesn't seem that much faster. But I am only bothered about storage. Just hope 1 TB is enough as I have just downloaded Call of Duty Black Ops (Digital Down) which is 18 GB before updates or game saves.

      Remember that you are only allowed 2 downloads for purchased games. You used up your allowed 2 downloads. Backing up would have saved you one download. Sony don't give 5 downloads anymore.

    • @DeviantDragonsGaming
      @DeviantDragonsGaming 10 лет назад +1

      Bflo23 you can download it again but you'll need to go to the website and deactivate your systems if you did not do so on the system before you upgraded. I shared some DLC with a friend a while ago but when I got a second system I couldn't activate it so I had to go to the website and deactivate all the systems on my account then sign in and activate the systems I wanted on my account. Those sneaky bastards.

    • @bflo23e57
      @bflo23e57 10 лет назад

      *****
      OK. It is good to know. I was under the impression it was only 2 download for 2 different systems and then that is it. I have 2 systems so I am glad that if a system were to break down, I could deactivate the system and download some purchased games again on another system... As long as it is 2 "activated systems". The key word is "2 activated systems".

    Just so everyone knows, as of firmware 4.80, the PS3 still does NOT work with 2TB HDDs, no matter what model PS3 your using, and no matter what 2TB HDD you install, they simply don't work as the PS3s just do not recognize them yet. Perhaps with a future firmware update, but it is doubtful.

      I have now bought and tested a 1.75TB HDD from ebay from ebay user Memorylabs, and it does NOT work on PS3 FW 4.80. The console's immediately said that the HDD is not compatible and did not even attempt to format the drive, and I tried it on all my PS3 models, fat, slim and super slim all at 4.80 FW.
      I returned that HDD, and changed it for the 1.5TB HDD also found from Memorylabs on ebay, (in the auction that states it's made for PS3, which is a bare white drive) and the 1.5TB HDD's work flawlessly, were tested flawlessly using HDD Regenerator, and are from what I can tell ARE the biggest HDDs that can be used on PS3. I tried it on my first gen model CECH-A01 fat PS3, my Slim 2101b and Slim 3006b PS3, and the new Super Slim PS3 400x system and ALL of them accept the drive and format perfectly!
      So, if you want the BIGGEST HDD for the PS3, unless a future firmware form Sony allows bigger drives, get the 1.5TB HDD from Memorylabs on ebay! The drive is cheap enough, (like $64 or so), and has decent speed and works like a charm!

    if I put a new hardrive in my ps3 and didn't do any of that flash drive stuff and booted it like normal, would it boot like a brand new ps3 where you have to chose all the settings?

    • @joshyjoshs237
      @joshyjoshs237 8 лет назад

      +Theo Clement nope, ps3 hasn't the firmware built in, you need to install it via usb flash drive, otherwise it will not boot. It's like turning on a computer with a blank hard drive, there is no operating system to boot..

    • @TheZorolord
      @TheZorolord 8 лет назад

      +Co So it depends if you have a basic system I think the new Super Slim model. They have a basic 12GB flash drive, so if you install another drive it will format it. However if it's a original or slim then if you put a new drive in it does need to be formatted.

    son many things wrong with this video
    1. RPM doesn't matter you can have a 5,400 or a 7,200 it wont matter
    2. you use SATA 2 otherwise known as SATA 3 GBp/s, SATA 3 otherwise known as SATA 6GBp/s will also work fine you just wont see any benefit
    3.ALL 2.5" drives will work as long as they are just a standard hard drive and have nothing added on them
    but if you are worried on what hard drive to get then just search PS3 hard drive on ebay =) but i prefer western digital blue 2.5" drives and they have great warranty

    • @shanes.6227
      @shanes.6227 10 лет назад +10

      dont assume, and do your research. its been stated in a lot of places that 7200rpm can cause heat issues. 7200rpm = spinning faster = more temps. not hard to figure out

    • @TheRealSuperGeeks
      @TheRealSuperGeeks 10 лет назад +4

      Aren't you a big dope? He was very specific that he had done his research and the issues of overheating were widely reported for 7200 RPM drives and yeah, it does matter with ANY PS3 as they, in the past have been notorious for overheating. Does that mean that it will always happen? Depending on how well-ventilated the unit is, how cool the room is and yes, how cool the HDD itself runs (they don't all run at the same temperature depending on the model, genius), no, not necessarily, but you're taking a risk and why you want to take a risk with the biggest killer of computer hardware (that is, heat), I have no idea.
      Also, dopey, he stated, again based on actual research, that the HDD had to be BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE with SATA 1.0. He didn't say it had to be SATA 1.0. And not for nothing, everything this guy did WORKED so where do you get off saying "so many things wrong with this video?"

    • @brandonfrancey5592
      @brandonfrancey5592 10 лет назад +1

      1. Of course it will work, the question is if it will last. Heat is a problem for any electronic device, take your chances if you want. Others have found out about the problem the hard way so why do you want to ignore their lesson?
      2. All sata devices should be compatible but there is always some dickhead drive that just won't work.
      3. NOT all 2.5" drive will work. I found this out when my 2TB drive wouldn't fit in my mini PC because it was 12mm thick. Same thing applies to the PS3. You are going to be quite upset when your shiny new drive won't fit inside the slot just because you assumed that all 2.5" drives are the same.

    • @agentdark64
      @agentdark64 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Obviously you have a PS Slim. If you have the older verisons of PS3 (like model CECHJ02) and you plug in a SATA 3gbs HDD, it won't recognize it.

    Absolutely wonderful! I have a 500GB digistor external hard drive and I watched the video you have here. I took apart the digistor and its basically the same hard drive as the 160GB that came with my slim. I didn't even need to format it to FAT32 because it already was formatted that way. I swapped out hard drives and downloaded the 4.55 firmware to a flash drive as directed, followed the rest of your steps and now have a ps3 with 412GB! I am a plus member and with so many great games for free to download I was running out of space. Unfortunately I have to download those games again but it was totally worth it. Thank you so very much for this video it was extremely educational!

  • @willblanco1626

    This entire method worked flawlessly. The only other thing I would add is that when I had to format my external hard drive to FAT32 I was prompted to pick the 32768 option instead of the 4096 option because I was using a larger 2 TB drive. I believe most larger drives these days would use the 32768 option for formatting them. Excellent video!

    I've had several playstations though out the years. My current PS3 slim I rarely use anymore, downloaded a couple of movies which I hardly do through playstation network. Sure enough went to watch them and the factory hard drive locked up. Went to local retailer bought what they had, SEAGATE 500GB, 7200 RPM, followed your instructions and got it!! Hope it won't burn up, but ? Thanks for posting this.

    I'm in the middle of this process and I'm being serious here. My approximation time is 10 hrs. The first time I tried to back up my data it presented failure to back up. Second time it actually started to back up. So far so good. 5-31-14

    Just upgraded to a 1 TB drive. Thanks a lot!! I was panicking because I has a SATA 6 GB which was only backwards compatable to SATA 3 and you noted that it only worked if it was SATA 1. Luckily for me they must have done something since you made the video because mine worked just fine.

    I have a 120GB PS3 which a few months ago stopped working & I was wondering what had happened so I turned it on & the message 'Unable to start up check if your hard drive is compatible', in the meantime I had purchased a new 320GB hard drive & I came across this video so I had replaced the 120GB hard drive with the 320GB hard drive & followed the steps on this video & the PS3 is working again so thank you for providing the information needed to get my PS3 working again.

    It did help me out a lot. I was so skeptical and scared since, well, I don't "open" a lot of electronics. Very detailed guide. I didn't backup my system though as it was showing 86 hours for my 250 gig original drive.

    Great step by step instructions! It worked flawlessly for me on my second attempt. On my first try I ran into a problem on restoring the PS data back to the PS3. I formatted my 1TB WD Elements drive (FAT32) and backed up the data to the drive but when attempting the restore it could not find the data. This portable WD drive has a mini USB3 connector on it so I was using a USB3 cable. On my second try I used a USB2 drive and cable (again formatted FAT32) and it worked like a champ. Thanks for the great video!

    Nice video, just after upgrading my 60GB original to 120GB Samsung Evo 840 SSD. Backup first took under an hour onto my portable HDD. Installed new SSD - worked instantly - no need to download firmware, user accounts already recognised - now I'm simply restoring my old gamesaves etc across. I should mention my PS3 is now virtually silent (!) No more whirring noises from the HDD, and the instant speed difference is absolutely incredible. A very simple process.

      so what did you do after you screwed in the hard drive? same 'secret' boot up and it just didnt ask for udpate info(the start+select)? or did you just turn the ps3 on like it had never been fiddled with and it went straight to your home xmb page?

    I was having issues with my download games freezing and having texture issues since I upgraded my hard drive from the stock 250 to a 500 that I had lying around. I was looking for a new hard drive but I was wondering about the RPM speed and if I should go with 7200. Glad I saw this video. Thank you sir for making it! Why I love RUclips. Was about to go research hard drives for PS3 and I like always turn to RUclips first for multiple sources. Going for a 1TB now.

    Thank you to your short simple step by step video, it made upgrading my PS3 an actual option because it opened my eyes to how simple it is, :) I now have a PS3 with a 1TB drive, alas I'm still waiting on the restore working, it failed 4 times, it's no big deal i had already backed up all of my game saves to a flash drive, so i might not bother with the restore i can re-install all of my games and get there updates it might take a while but it's better than keep trying the restore when, i only had a third of my stuff in the back up anyway as i deleted all my big digital games cause i knew i could re-download them anyway. I would recommend this Upgrade to anyone it's kool having a PS3 with a much larger hard drive, never will i have to worry about running out of space, My PS3 now has 750GB more than my laptop lol. Others might have problems with the restore feature too, you should make a video taking people step by step without using the back up/restore feature, especially if people have a rather new system and don't have much stuff on it yet they could easily skip the back up/restore option, just back up there game saves to a flash drive and they will be good to go, ya know :) again good video,

I have been trying to update my PS3 hard drive for a month now But for some reason my PS3 was not recognizing the update on my USB flash drive. Thank you sooooo much for making this video. I followed it step by step with you and everything came out great!!! When I used my USB Thumb Drive with the Firmware on it, it did take like 10 minutes or so which sorta worried me at first - I thought it had locked up but I waited and it worked fine. Oh! And if you had Multiple Users, it restores everything for all of them!! Yippee! Thanks again!! :)

    I love this guide, I can't even begin to tell you how much this helped me.
    After I replace my HDD to 1TB it wouldn't boot and I was lost. I watched about four videos before yours and by far every single step was exactly as stated in the video.
    The flash drive I use had about 1GB of files on it but PS3 found the folder and ran the update 4.11
    Thanks a lot your a life saver.

    Very well done and informative. A lot of RUclipsr how to guides either presume too much of the viewer ("oh, they'll know what I mean..."etc.) or talk down to the viewer with some serious over simplification. Your video was well balanced and extremely entertaining to boot...I'm planning to swap out my PS3's 160GB drive for a 1TB so this was perfect. I will whiz beforehand as well! Concentrate! Lol...

    Great video, I had an issue on the setup. I was unable to get the update to take from the usb drive to reinstall the PS3 OS, and wake the system. I thought it was the hard drive till I remembered how do I update my blu-ray player. The updates are done by burning the update to a disc yes may be a waste of a disc, but the update took without the usb drive. The system is working now. The main issue for the upgrade was the games were not being read properly. I really thought it was the hard drive it turned out to be the laser lens was off track weird start up error.What I did to get the drive laser lens to align again just put a blu-ray disc in the player. The lens aligned itself now the games read fine may have been a little dust who knows.
    Now the player has a new better 500gb from a 120 which was almost completely used up. Thank you for the good work.
