I used to own the very first batch of a PS3. Had the PS2 chip in it, and a chrome trim on the front of the console. My PS3 stopped working after 12 months and Sony said they could either take away the PS3 and give me another replacement. Or I'd wait 3 weeks so they could fix mine. I took the replacement model as I couldn't wait 3 weeks to go back on it. Big massive mistake. The replacement model was the one with the removed PS2 chip and with a grey trim.

@@garethlloyd1445 That sucks for you, when my GameStop refurb PS3 died in 2011 (YLOD with a Blockbuster CoD MW3 disc in it no less), I sent it in to them and they sent me back the same exact model, looked like it'd been completely untouched, with the 500 GB hard drive I'd installed in the old PS3 already installed in the new one, and with the disc in a CD sleeve.

The best part of the SSD upgrade is how snappier and smoother the XMB was. It did slightly improve loadtimes in games, less so for earlier ones, and more so for the ones released by it's end of cycle that were significantly bigger in size. Also, it runs cooler and requires less power to run so it helps reduce the systems overall temperature. The catch is, it's not gonna make almost any difference if you're playing the game off a disc, the real visible difference is if your games are digital.
But SSDs are much cheaper now so it's not a bad idea to get one.

@@kabba4575 Weird how different opinions can be. For me it was the worst Playstation/ Xbox generation. It was this weird transition from low resolutions to the higher ones but games still looked very jaggy and with many games still beeing 30fps the experience was sometimes horrendous. This time period was also the rise of military shooters and I've never liked those. Especially because many games had that ugly brownish/ yellowish tone over it. In the end I've liked the Xbox360 way more because of Gears, Oblivion and Crackdown but ultimately the PC was kinda the best place in this time period. Sadly the golden age of PC gaming started to diminish with the rise of the PS4 and now with the new console gen and prices for parts, PC gaming for me is dead (I only play older games on it). The golden Playstation era for me was PS2 most definitely. I mean holy shi* we got GTA3 in 2001 which changed videogames forever, we got MGS2, Burnout and even EA published really good games back then.

I nearly bought the Sony PlayStation 3d TV. I think the seller still has it for sale for £100 in North Manchester, UK. I first looked at reviews and RUclips videos from only a couple of years ago. Not much for connectivity or 3d game content. The biggest concern is that apparently they are very unreliable and easy break. I think I only wanted it just to own it and would have used it maybe in general?
Another issue with 3d is that I have my left eye stronger than my right. So this made 3d look double vision. It worked but I either had to see the up close character in double and distance fine, or change the settings so the characters up closer were fine with the background double vision. I found never get it to find the middle.

He also goes over the misconceptions that have plagued the PS3 since the YLOD first happened, and goes over the recent innovative reballing repair method for a fat PS3 working with a 40nm RSX chip. The newer RSX chips are the only things that will save these early PS3s. The good news is that there's more 40nm RSX chips than backwards compatible PS3s. The bad news is that these early PS3s will be extremely rare in 10-15 years. Especially one with a 40nm RSX. They will be highly sought after when the PS3 is considered retro.

Gosh! I needed this video like a week or two ago. I spent weeks investigating which ps3 model to buy all over the internet and I ended up with a Slim. It is actually my first console and I'm waiting to find some games I'm interested in to try it out! I cleaned the controllers deeply and test everything I could in the console but until I have a game I don't know if it runs okay.
I think I got a pretty good deal. It's a 160gb (or so), it was in pretty good condition and had two original dual shock 3. It came with 4 games that I really don't care about much (fifa) and it came with a remote controller very much like your standard tv remote but it is Bluetooth! I found it strange. All this for $50 :)

Right before the pandemic, I got a super slim with no controller for 30$, what a steal, and a genuine controller for 10$. What. A. Steal.
Little by little i was catching any game that caught my attention, and some dude wanted to swap me my copy of Oblivion GOTY, for his kinda rare reprint of Demon's Souls.
I got oblivion for 5$, and I really wanted to play it, but I had my eyes on demon's souls for a while, so I accepted.

One thing I think you missed: The Superslim came with or without a hard drive. For those without, it was 12 GB of internal flash storage instead. This will quickly run out. You can therefore buy a hard drive separately and install, BUT you need to buy the HDD cradle for that, which is a special product not often spoken about. It should be cheap, around $12-$17, and while people claim you can build your own using a pizza carton for bottom support only, I definitely don't recommend it. The flash superslim console is dirt cheap however (I got mine brand new in store for $100) so if you know you won't satisfy with 320 GB or something, why pay more for a drive you're gonna replace anyway?
When my PS3 fat died, I bought a superslim and via hardware backup management and what have you, ended up with a flash drive superslim with 1 TB HDD. That lasts me forever: I have about 60 PSN games, quite a number of installed disc games, a big mp3 library, and several seasons of low-HD video clips, and despite trying to push everything in there I'm still only at 60% usage. Spend that extra dollar for the terabyte and don't look back on managing game sizes and disc space ever again.

A note for people who's not considering the PS1 and PS2 compatibility: if you're thinking of buying a PS1 and PS2 later, you need to make sure your TV supports them because those two were so old they don't support modern TV resolutions. Even if they do, it'll look wonky with black bars and other stuffs. Playing it on PS3 will be a much better and easier experience especially if you're planning to put it in your collection of consoles which connects to just one big TV in your play room.
Also I completely agree with the mindset of exclusive only games. Just bought a PS3 few months ago JUST to play GT6 because I missed it. But when I fill it with games I only look for PS3-exclusive games. Other games you most likely can play in PC, unless yours is not capable, it's not worth it.
This would apply to other consoles as well, it was the case when I bought the PS2 too, GT4 and Ace Combat was the two I was aiming for. Now I'm looking at the XBox 360 due to it having Ace Combat 6 exclusive in it for some reason.

You can get really good image quality out of a PS1 and PS2 using a dedicated upscaler like the OSSC or Retrotink 2x/5x. Imho the launch PS3 is a really impressive piece of hardware, but I think it's not worth it due to reliability issues. A non-backward compatible PS3, like the later Fats (CECHJ to CECHQ with 65nm RSX) or Slims/Super Slims, and a fat PS2 or 1st gen slim PS2s (up to SCPH-75xxx) will get you full original hardware compatibility with PS3 (through the PS3), PS2 and PS1 games (through the PS2). Plus if you are into original hardware you can use the upscaler with a lot of other systems.

For PS2 playback: I believe all models can now be hacked, and thereafter rip the PS2 discs to play them through software. Beware though, hacking a PS3 is much more of a hassle to do and maintain than any other PS console, even the Vita. It's not like the PSP which was hack-n-go.

@@ericmeiring2512 People say it's so easy but in comparison it really isn't. PSP: Pop this in this folder, start the program on the home screen, press X and you're done. Insert games in this folder and that's it. Same goes for Vita but it has a more complicated root file system with several drives you have to maintain and plugins which must be configured. For the PS3, it's depending on a web browser hack which is seriously unstable and works once every ten tries, and once it's done you need to configure the whole operating system from three different highly advanced programs and debug settings lists over half of which is just lingo nobody understands unless you Google for five days straight (my hacking project took a week and a half to completely set up). Downloading games requires license key files which are hard to come by and very buggy to crack. I would say only one in three games I download actually work as intended. Going online on PSN is risky for banning and you can theoretically circumvent it but it requires even more research and that you constantly clear your OS cache from traces of the console being hacked. Overall I don't find it such a pleasant experience at all and I still haven't managed to go online with it. I did it mostly to be able to rip backup my own actual games on disc and to get a few functionalities in like a SNES emulator and a slightly more intelligent media player. If you're not tech savvy, I can't really recommend it. PSP, Vita and Wii hacking was so much easier than this.

@@DriveYourSanity Oh really? You mean all of a sudden every single rap and rep file is readily available on the web for every single game and the reActPSN is suddenly for some reason working flawlessly after ten years of being a buggy lackluster of an app with not even as much as a button GUI to show for it? Gimme a break. Installing a Hen might be easier through better installers than in my day, but maintaining all settings for all different types of CEX and other modes is no child play. The fact remains that it is a pain in the ass to import games in comparison to the breeze that the PSP was. Pop an ISO into the right folder and off you went. I just checked the video from Blaine Locklair confirming every single thing I said for seven minuets straight and if you check up Mister Mario that's another 35 minutes of agony. And they haven't even begun talking about having a system, just hacking it.

Then, to bypass needing a liscense key all you have to do is activate the account you are using to mod the system. That’s literally all it takes.

I recently started collecting for ps3 in the last couple months. Have about 40 games so far. I have 3 move/navigation controllers, camera, eye of judgment mat/cards 2 oem official ps guns (the ones that look like pistals) some of my games are imports, I love that this console can play other regions. I got the japanese biohazard Chronicles, korean version of heavenly sword, European version of house of the dead overkill, and all 4 dynasty warriors gundam in Japanese. I just currently got all the metal gears on ps3. I got the legacy collection and the code still worked to get your digital download of MGS1 and MGS VR missions. Picked up metal gear rising, metal gear 5 ground zero and metal gear 5 phantom pain day 1. Which I was quite impressed with the ps3 version of mgs 5. It's nice I can play the whole series on one console. It really has been a fun console to collect for and i still want to get a few more accessories. I want the sharpshooter gun and the ps move wheel for sure, wanting the official bluray controller, and the ps augmented reality book for my collection. Most of the stuff has been pretty cheap to collect for which is cool. I own about 80 ps1 games so that's also cool to play on. I got the slim model which sucks no ps2 playback, but I do have a ps2 plugged into a ossc with HD retrovision cables so I'm not really missing much just have to have the ps2 out for those games.

Nice thorough overview of the PS3. I bought one at launch when they were a ridiculous price, traded a bunch of stuff & still had to pay about £400. I still own that model and also the superslim. I will be honest: the PS3 generation disappointed me, so I went with the 360 for most of the generation as the majority of multiplatform games ran better on it, the exclusives like resistance, uncharted & last of us were very good but xbox also had greats that gen too so i favoured it. Being a Playstation player since the launch of the PS1 i felt they faltered with the follow up to hugely successful PS2 much as xbox did with the xbox one, but Sony learnt there lesson & PS4 was a great system with excellent exclusives. The PS5 is also a nice machine, and I hope it doesn't disappoint, so far, so good.

@redx Whilst i disagree that the PS4 was a disappointing console i can tell you are an Xbox fan, as am i, you have to admit the Xbox one was a colossal flop which only survived because of gamepass & Microsofts deep pockets. Loudness of the fan i agree with but i usually played with headphones or surround sound so i barely noticed it myself. The PS4 destroyed the Xbox one for two main reasons, they had quality studios making games regularly whilst Xbox did not. They also did little to help recover the gen apart from leverage Gamepass & it's value for money. Xbox are on the right track now aquiring studios left & right, having two games which come to mind recently as very good, Forza 5 & Psychonauts 2, i hope they keep it up & we can look forward to more, how soon, i imagine a few years at the earliest as studios need time & big Phil seems willing to allow it to ensure quality. Nothing will encourage growth like day one releases of quality exclusives into gamepass. PS5 has had teething issues but nothing overly terrible that a few firmware updates can't fix, they have a quality controller with a launch lineup which wasn't bad. Yes they back tracked on it in favour of making money by using cross gen as the PS5 player base is too small to generate enough of a profit to maintain big titles being restricted to only a small install base. Ratchet & Clank, Demon Souls, Miles Morales, Kena, Astro Bot are some titles i enjoyed but i understand if you dont rate any of these, which is fine, different strokes for different folks. No launch of a new system is flawless but i think they have done ok, so far, apart from charging extra for games & charging for slight graphical upgrades like GOT amongst others. Yes the light on the PS4 controller sucked so i put a sticker over mine, problem solved. The Dualsense is a marked improvement over the dualshock 4, in my opinion. I own both consoles & have since PS1 & the og Xbox, i dont tend to side with either, they both offer different styles of games, approaches to gaming & thats ok, variety stops the gaming companies from becoming indistinguishable from one another. I say enjoy what you prefer but if you wish to hate on one company because you have loyalty to another or you disagree with their practices that is totally up to you, your opinions are yours to express & own.

    • @joet6434
      @joet6434 2 года назад

@redx both companies are after profit, they want your money & loyalty to sustain their business model, they are a business first & foremost. Phil can play as many games as he wants & thats cool but his main priority is the growth of Xbox & Gamepass which is why i believe they are planning to increase the cost of the service in the coming months. Like i said, you are entitled to your opinion as am i. You seem to favour one companies approach & thats cool, i will not take sides as i will purchase the titles i deem to be of interest to me as i am sure you will.
