    Brilliant! I’ve got a big smile on my face 😁.
    I just ordered and received a shiny new flash drive. In order to make the rescue disc/s but hadn’t got round to doing it by following your previous hyrens video.

    Been using YUMI for years, but this seems a little more fluid 👍
    You can have Ventoy ignore an entire directory, and its subdirectories, by placing an unnamed file with the extension ".ventoyignore" within it (In other words, the file should only have the extension with no name prefixing it). This is useful if you have other .ISO files on the drive that aren't bootable, and will speed up the loading of Ventoy, especially if you have many other files that don't need to be searched by it.
    (By the way, there a quick registry edit you can do to remove drives showing up multiple times on the Windows Explorer sidebar. Absolutely drives me nuts!)

    • @FlyboyHelosim
      @FlyboyHelosim 11 месяцев назад +3

      I used YUMI for a bit but one day just stopped booting. Another issue is that it can take longer to write ISO files to the USB stick as it has to actually extract them... which leads to the other issue of having hundreds, if not thousands, of loose files on the disk in a rather convoluted file and folder structure. To remove an ISO you also have to go through an uninstall process, because of aforementioned extracted file and folder structure. Ventoy makes it so much cleaner and simpler, with less likelihood of corruption or user confusion.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy

      Good to know. I've heard other people brag about YUMI but wasn't familiar with it. This is good info to be aware of 💪

    These are all methods for which computer technicians are usually stuck. Nowadays everything is much more simplified. All you need is a copy, even the free version, of Aomei Backupper, which creates a grub menu from which you can choose whether to enter your OS or Aomei's recovery system. Aomei also creates incremental backups for you to access at boot time, at any time.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад +5

      Agreed. Backupper is a quality product.

    • @riccardod8425
      @riccardod8425 11 месяцев назад +3

      I'm currently using Macrium Reflect instead of Aomei backupper since the day Aomei failed to restore my PC. Just my 2 cents. I even had a copy of Acronis True Image but it was an elephant.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад +3

      Acronis was my go to for mnay years. Macrium went to a pricing model but you can still find the free versions out there online and they work great

    • @PracticaProphetica
      @PracticaProphetica 6 месяцев назад

      I used to use Acronis, but it didn't work well for copying one drive to another (when both drives were in an external caddy)...it kept using the boot info from the internal drive, and if that was different than the external, oh well. I guess this was supposed to be a limitation on the home version to prevent you from using it in a tech environment.
      I tried Macrium (free) and liked it, especially it's emergency boot USB creation. So I purchased a 4-license family pack on a sale they had. Shortly after they jacked up the price to a subscription model (per machine) that was expensive. I might use more than 4 licenses, so I was looking elsehwere.
      Since then I've considered Hasleo Backup Suite. It is free and even supports incremental and differential backups (which FBackup does not do in the free version). I'm going to be experimenting with it in the future.

    Back in the day, I used Hiren's by loading on a writable mini-CD [you could get versions that were credit-card sized that could pop straight into your wallet for an 'everyday carry"]. There were also mini-distros of Linux, and of course, it was lots of command-line interfacing. So familiarity with bash and DOS shell was important.
    The thing about read-only installation/repair media is that you can be absolutely sure that the change-rooted environment you boot up in is clean of malware [provided of course your media was clean to begin with!; -)]
    I suppose in theory you could come across viral code in the CMOS memory, but I never encountered it.

      Very true. And I, too, remember the mini-cd. You'd see a lot of them passed around as "business cards". Glad that trend didn't last LOL

    I have been using Ventoy for several years now and have it on a 1TB USB SanDisk, and also on a USB 2TB Seagate personal drive and have copied approximately 65 ISO's to it and it works great. So it does not have to be limited to a small USB Flash Drive. My next project is to learn the Network Ventoy.

    You should consider adding information about how Ventoy's "security key" may need to be enrolled before before the newly created Ventoy USB can be used to boot to the various ISO options on the USB. I have created some Ventoy USB over the past few years and never encountered the problem I had when creating a new USB to use with my new Windows 11 computer, using your easy to follow guide. Because secure boot was in effect I needed to enroll the key (I did it through the key method, not the hash method) and once I did that the Ventoy USB worked fine. Yes, I know I could have turned secure boot off and used Ventory and then turn secure boot back on, but hey when your are troubleshooting a problem that step could be forgotten.

    Thank you for the useful info. I used to be a Geek Squad member back in the day.. Early to late 2000s then left for law enforcement.. Just one thing so you guys don't learn the hard way like I did. I did all that nice setup then I decided to "add" Medicat. It wiped everything and there was no warning of format like all the formatting softwares I've used. I had a bunch of ISOs and drivers. It seems like if you want to go with Medicat do that first, then if your flash drive is large like mine (256GB), just add the extra stuff on it after.

    One thing you might have mentioned was the Partition Configuration option, which makes it possible to reserve some space for a separate partition on the flash drive when you flash it with Ventoy. This is great when you use live CD's as you can access the internet and download stuff, save it on the separate partition in case you haven't prepared for something going wrong like having Hirens or whatever.
    EDIT: As far as I know, since I haven't used Ventoy since version 1.0.78, it's not possible to access the ISO storage part when you boot into a live CD environment - might've changed.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  10 месяцев назад +22

      I did address this at 11:06, but the reason I chose the folder option vs the separate partition option is because I had difficulty making it work and boot properly. If I had an issue with it, I knew an average user would also. So creating a folder just for personal files (which can also be mapped as a drive letter in Windows, simulating a separate partition), would be a much more user-friendly option ;)

    NOTICE: I Formatted my USB drive. I was under the presumption this would remove everything associated with "Ventoy." However, "Formatting"" the USB drive did NOT remove Ventoy. When Ventoy is placed on the USB drive, Ventoy creates its own partition. This partition is NOT "Formatted" when the USB drive is "Formatted." Apparentlly the only way to get rid of Ventoy from a USB drive is to "Merge" all the partitions, and then do a "Format" of the USB drive. I was going to use MemTest86 on its own - without Ventoy. So, MemTest86 was placed on the one partition that was new and had been formatted. But, when I used MemTest86 it showed up under "Ventoy," even though MemTest was on the other partition.

      I guess I don't get it. Why is Ventoy better than backing up to an external drive? Also, I've always wondered why backing up isn't a one or two click thing. They have created high level AI but somehow these smart people can't (won't?) design a back up process without 197 steps?

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад +2

      Ventoy is better, in my opinion, because you not only have the ability to back up to a flash drive (or external storage in your case), but you have the added benefit of tons of repair tools and operating system installers on the same disk. Just makes sense to wear one took belt vs several. But everyone has different needs ;)

      What is the best combination for the flash drive when you create Vin toy? Mbr or gpt, and what file system, expat or ntfs? combination I messed up my jump drives now having problems creating but I gotta wipe them start over again so that’s why I’m asking.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy

      For best compatibility in my opinion, probably MBR and EX-FAT. For speed, MBR and NTFS. Stay away from GPT as it's a newer fornat and not all machines have the ability to read GPT drives yet. Stick with MBR and EX-FAT and you should be fine 💪

    There is also the optical drive emulator device called "IODD". Same ISO drag and drop. IODD will boot on any hardware as the pc/server will see it as a USB optical disk. Boots on everything even old 2000 era hardware that is non-UEFI.

    One thing to be wary of is updating the Ventoy software on the USB stick using the update option in the program's menu. When I did that it wiped all the ISO files from my USB stick and made it so that none of the partitions were recognized by Windows. I had to do a DiskPart format to get the drive back to factory standards and functional again. I think in some cases the Ventoy software has to be updated using that live ISO file that's also available for download on the Ventoy website, although when I last looked into it there wasn't much documentation on it. Since then I just run an older version of Ventoy as am too scared to update it given that I've got about 60Gb of ISO files now on my Ventoy stick and it's slow as molasses writing that much data to even USB 3.0.

    • @AskYourComputerGuy
      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад +3

      Thanks for sharing. I have not heard of Ventoy deleting anything on the update except the boot partition, which is not where the ISO files should be stored. Maybe that's what happened, you put the ISO files on the boot partition? Is that possible?

    • @FlyboyHelosim
      @FlyboyHelosim 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@AskYourComputerGuy That's what's meant to happen. No I didn't put the ISOs on the boot partition because for me at least that's hidden in Windows.

      @AskYourComputerGuy  11 месяцев назад +3

      Well that's news to me. Can't see any other way it would, considering the people who created Ventoy say it doesn't delete anything, just updates. I'd check the Ventoy forums for more information

      Maybe try to see what went wrong on a test drive?

    • @FlyboyHelosim

      @@Daonexus I would have kept the partition type the same, MBR, as I use a 64Gb USB stick. I only really did the update out of curiosity. It's not something I really feel the need to keep updated and I don't even use it that often.

    The only issue I had with Ventoy was with ISO's that were either UEFI or legacy boot. Mixing the two didn't work so I had to have two Ventoy drives one that was for legacy booting ISOa and one for UEFI booting ISOs. It may not be an issue any longer so I'll give it another try.

      @@AskYourComputerGuy I think it may be more of an issue with the BIOS config and the ISOs in Ventoy. Selecting either UEFI or Legacy boot in the BIOS can cause a failure in the opposite one booting depending on which one the ROM uses.

      Agreed... had the same problem when I first used Ventoy (with Medicat) a couple weeks ago trying to clone/upgrade a laptop SSD... some of the iso's wouldn't boot until I changed the BIOS to legacy... then others wouldn't work until I changed it back to UEFI. At some point Windows gave errors and I had a mini-heart atack as it looked like something partition related got screwed up. My suggestion is to make notes about each step you try, so you can go back and undo it logically.

    The only potential setback with a mult-booting ISO USB stick that contains Windows and Linux installers may be constraints with secure boot, UEFI and legacy-based firmware BIOSes. Some systems may not recognize the USB drive if it's formatted to a system-specific setup. Of course most modern hardware is UEFI but the question is if the installed ISOs will work in both environments. DELL, HP, Lenovo, etc. all seem to be on the same page in respects to pre-boot security constraints. The old days of just tapping a function key, esc or delete to get a USB to boot may be coming to an end, unfortunately...

    I learned about Ventoy about two years ago, as I was trying out every multiboot flash drive program around. The problem was some ISO's would work and others not. So far I have found them all to work and work well with Ventoy. I have several Ventoy disks that I create so that if one gets corrupted when you least expect it I have another. I also have a 2TB Seagate Personal drive and have over 80 different ISO's on it. Like you I have also created a folder to put other software and files that I might need. I have started using a larger group of portable applications which do not have to be installed into the system like the normal installs, for working with a computer customer. Thank you for sharing this video.
    Side note, when you go to install a linux distro like Ubuntu, you need to remove the USB drive before you do the install. It will otherwise become part of the boot process of the installed distro. That corrupts the Ventoy drive and you have to do a remake when you get home.
