To note: There were backwards compatible 80 GB PS3's that shipped with a Dualshock 3. OK Austin let me explain the max size you can go on a PlayStation 3 is a 1 TB hard drive it cannot exceed 1 TB which means you cannot use a 1.2 TB or a 1.3 TB it Hass to be a 1 TB or else you will not be playing Blu-ray movies it basically prevents you from returning to the main menu in your Blu-ray movies when your movie finishes when your movie finishes and it’s supposed to return Back to the main menu it doesn’t go back to the main menu it freezes this is because of the hard drive size being locked to 1 TB only
PS3 can support up to 2TB since that is the limitation of the MBR partition layout. Since it doesn't support GPT, this should also apply to external HDDs too.
@@Redrum_Samm No it can take a 2 TB however you will lose Blu-ray playback meaning you cannot play movies what will happen is when you were done watching your movie at the end of the movie the Blu-ray disc will try to return to the main menu for the movie and it will freeze because the hard drive will cause a boot loop it’s an issue that exists within the operating system on the PS3 so if you remember not to allow your Blu-ray disc to return to the main menu after you’re done playing you will be fine But this video was talking about building the ultimate PS3 which means that you would need Blu-ray playback so a 1 TB would be the best
@@haydenw8691 again it’s not what you think it’s the playback that’s the problem if you are playing Blu-ray movies on the PS3 And you allow the entire movie to play including ending credits and then the disk decides to go back to the main menu after the credits have run the disk will freeze on the main menu it’s an issue with DVD movie and Blu-ray movie playback it’s always been there it’s always been in the console if you exceed a 1 TB hard drive you will have that bug Remember he was building the ultimate PS3 which means I would assume he would want Blu-ray playback to be able to enjoy watching movies as well as MPEG-4 playback is why he was using the external hard drive
This is awesome! As someone who grew up with ps3 I will say sony did a great job on giving us so many cool and fun features and attachments for the ps3. A lot of this stuff was ahead of it's time lol.

My dad was asking me to factory reset his old ps3 before he got rid of it and if it wasn't for your guys video I wouldn't have known ps5 controllers work on the ps3. So yeah thanks again
4:03 Fun fact, although anyone who's familiar with the PS3 will probably know. A modded PS3 could install games to an external HDD. So if the PS3 accepts the drive, you can dump the disk to the HDD, both internal and external, although external can be a hassle in the case of an NTFS drive. It'll dump the disk into the .iso format, which can be decompiled and modded (check the CoD 4 mod video on my channel for an example). So if he modded the PS3, it would really could have been the Ultimate PS3. Also, it can use a LOT of controllers. Personally I've gotten old dummy gamepads, PS2 (with an adapter), PS4, and even Joy Cons to work with the system. As a matter of fact, it's bluetooth works really well too. I used to use a PS4 controller with mine, which worked great. Only issue was the home button not working, but I bought a cheap PS4 wired controller which works better.
I really do not understand anything you said, but if you mean Hacking the console, it can be done by falsifying the software with a pendrive and installing Hen from the network, you can download free games and dlcs, the console can emulate ps2, gameboy, Nintendo, super Nintendo, among others. Also install mod menu for different games. The ps4 control can be done even on an original console.
I have a 1TB SSD in both of my PS3s, however, I think it's limited to 1.5TB, if I'm not mistaken. As far as external drives goes, if it's too large, you can partition the drive and it will be read by the PS3.
I was given a broken PS3 super slim and I managed to get another year out of it, but the hard drive went, and it keeps corrupting drives. Ironically, the 12GB onboard flash memory works fine and I still play games on it, but it's whooped, the hard drive panel is broke (from raging about the corrupting hard drives) and is rough looking in general. What a trooper
Now I can play Skate 3, LBP, NFSU2 with better performance. 2000-2012 had great games and hold sentimental value. It's the simple things in life that make us happy
I owned so many of those TVs. Bought them in bulk for $80 each. Really mad at myself for not holding onto one of them. They were awesome if you could keep them working. I was always terrified it would give out so after using it a few months I would sell one. I was a massive fan of 3d and this thing was legit for so small. Really mad 3D is all but dead. I still get the movies from overseas but gets harder and harder to find every year.
9:22 okay so as someone who has a ps5 and recently purchased the ps2 backwards compatible ps3 even i didnt know that. Thats amazing and now i dont need to have a billion charging cables since i can just use the duelsense.
Yes that's the normal way, but what he was saying was the Japanese version is flipped... O to *enter* and X to *close* . I think their logic being that X just like using a computer closes things... Actually I don't know why this wasn't the case from the start but we all got used to X to enter so it became the norm.
@@FireStarJutsu Yeah it seems to be kind of a universal thing in Japan that O equals Yes/OK and X equals No/Cancel My guess would be that product testing in other markets pre-release probably revealed that most people in those other markets would be more accustomed either to X being for Yes/OK and O being for No/Cancel or the placement of the Yes/OK button being the bottom most button in the standard gamepad diamond arrangement. You know before they released the first Playstation they would have been doing market research and bringing in consumers to try out the device and getting feedback from them. This is the most likely explanation I can think of. The other possibility being a close second is that someone with a lot of power in Playstation divisions outside of Japan all came up with the idea that they should swap from how Japan does it just as a personal preference. I think the market research explanation is far more likely.
It’s been almost a couple years, did the 480gb ssd still work? I ask because I had a 40gb PS3 but when I ran out of storage I got a 250gb hdd since I read that 500gb makes cooling fans work crazy. I have a 60gb backwards compatible PS3 I plan to open and wanted to see how yours went?
I have that 3d monitor, its great. Resistance 3 on 3D is a great experience. Also PS2 look really nice if you use good component cables, best flat screen for ps2 without an upscaler. There's also a PSP zoom mode but I dont have a PSP. Would be interested to see how it looks
This is NOT the ultimate PS3. The ultimate PS3 would be a PS3 Model CECHA00 (the very first model with full backwards compatibility for PS2 games) with a case mod featuring some holes in the bottom at the place where the big main fan is located (the named fan would be replaced by a later revision 19 blade fan instead of the original 15 blade fan). It would have been diassembled fully to replace all heat pads and the thermal paste on the heat spreaders and UNDER it (for that you need to carefully take the heatspreaders off which can be a pain in the a$$). And it would have the most recent 4.88 Custom Firmware in Cobra Mode, webMAN mod and a bunch of other homebrew installed on an internal 1TB drive, including SENenabler to ensure a save access to the PSN . All the games you have on disc could be easily backupped onto an external USB drive and played very easy with the installed webMAN mod from XMB (every game has a size between 5GB and 50GB, so decide the size of the external drive wise). And don't forget accessories like a modern TV or a home cinema sound system, why use a too expensive old PSTV while most modern TVs support 3D? Because it is from this time? Makes no sense to me.

Now I can play Skate 3, LBP, NFSU2 with better performance. 2000-2012 had great games and hold sentimental value. It's the simple things in life that make us happy
Yup if you buy a series S skate 3 is 1440p 60fps
RIP LBP
"$900 for a small screen???"
Smartphone flagship: that's cute
I owned so many of those TVs. Bought them in bulk for $80 each. Really mad at myself for not holding onto one of them. They were awesome if you could keep them working. I was always terrified it would give out so after using it a few months I would sell one. I was a massive fan of 3d and this thing was legit for so small. Really mad 3D is all but dead. I still get the movies from overseas but gets harder and harder to find every year.
Just pirate them?
@@TerminatorZXYIn pretty sure he means without stealing
11:31 Austin’s face has me rolling😂😂😂
I couldn't believe when they pulled out that OLED TV, I'll admit I kind of geeked out about it lmao
back in the day, this was definitely the ultimate set up
3:52 - Самая идеальная ps3 с SSD это на 1tb + жидкий металл + установка Hen Pro + разгон до 750 частот, вот это идеальная! 😢
Me: Hey mom can i get the new PS5 Mom: Sure! Me: Sees Austin's vid Me: mom actually can i get a ps3???? Mom: of course son!
You have a nice mom
Was that supposed to be funny because it wasn't funny at all 🧐
Me: don’t give a shit

1:30 What kind of monster buys physical games just to throw away the cases?
11:30 : The face you make when you get a good score on a quiz that went bad for you
9:00 “I’m going to double fist it” wtf Austin 😂😂😂😂😂
holy crap, been waiting for a ps3 video for so long
The original, phat PS3 might be the best looking console to this date (imo)
agree. it looks so legit!
Agree, that white one
@@jlpeng9036 a grilling device? Really?
You're just attaching random shit to it and calling it "ultimate." Watch Mystic's PS3 video for an ACTUAL "ultimate" upgrade.
Where’s the part where you actually build the ultimate ps3?
I recently got a PS3 slim for myself, I'm ecstatic to see this as a video!
RECENTLY ⁉️
9:03 - " I am gonna double fist it "
-Austin, 2021
it's too sensitive
I just sold an R9 380 for more than I paid for it after using it for five years. It's a weird time in computer hardware.
9:22 okay so as someone who has a ps5 and recently purchased the ps2 backwards compatible ps3 even i didnt know that. Thats amazing and now i dont need to have a billion charging cables since i can just use the duelsense.
0:09 Uhh... yeah no. The Store doesn't shut down.
I had one and was so happy to find that it played ps2 games aswell. And it also had 4 usb ports instead of 2
Does it still work?
*”WHAT HAVE YOU DONE AUSTIN?! IT WAS ONLY A CONSOLE!”*
It evolved into a mega ps3 it was good decision
CSGO is also available on 360 and is available on newer consoles with backwards compatibility, also there's still people playing online
6:50 Not only Japanese. In European models, you also click X to enter, and O to close.
Yes that's the normal way, but what he was saying was the Japanese version is flipped... O to *enter* and X to *close* .
I think their logic being that X just like using a computer closes things... Actually I don't know why this wasn't the case from the start but we all got used to X to enter so it became the norm.
@@FireStarJutsu Yeah it seems to be kind of a universal thing in Japan that O equals Yes/OK and X equals No/Cancel
My guess would be that product testing in other markets pre-release probably revealed that most people in those other markets would be more accustomed either to X being for Yes/OK and O being for No/Cancel or the placement of the Yes/OK button being the bottom most button in the standard gamepad diamond arrangement.
@@ram89572 I actually though of the exact first reason while typing but was too lazy to type it 😂
Yes! Finally! I waited for this for SUCH a long time! I'm so glad you've guys finally done it!
The decision to disable the PS store on the ps3 and ps vita got reverted, just fyi.
yeah it's in the video
It’s been almost a couple years, did the 480gb ssd still work? I ask because I had a 40gb PS3 but when I ran out of storage I got a 250gb hdd since I read that 500gb makes cooling fans work crazy. I have a 60gb backwards compatible PS3 I plan to open and wanted to see how yours went?
I've got a delidded one with 500gb HDD, it rarely goes above 55c both on Cell and RSX
FINALLY, i waitet so so long for this
I've been dreaming of this episode for so long!
Yeah this is my happy time as well watching you giving credit to the PlayStation gererations. Thanks.
i find it hard to believe that austin has never swapped out a ps3 hard drive
Most beautiful console ever made !!!
I still have that PS3 monitor/tv and its a beauty :D My dad got it as a tv+ps3 slim bundle back in the day!
I've been waiting for this video after the building X360 one.
12:15 you just unplug that TV like that without shutdowning?!
Austin: "These Playstation TVs are notorious to find"
*casually looks behind me at the one that still works sitting in my closet"
This was a great video, now all they need to do is make the ultimate Wii
this video is not a great video Mystic actually made the ultimate ps3 this one doesnt even function as its supposed to
I love how he Just gets handed stuff the whole time
I'm still rocking on my ps3 phat since 2008
I have that 3d monitor, its great. Resistance 3 on 3D is a great experience. Also PS2 look really nice if you use good component cables, best flat screen for ps2 without an upscaler. There's also a PSP zoom mode but I dont have a PSP. Would be interested to see how it looks
I've been waiting this video for a year
i was waiting since i started seeing the ultimate series
I always get excited seeing these videos pop up
This is NOT the ultimate PS3.
Seriously? 6k+ views in 5 minutes. 🤯
So you're saying that my functional, original fat PS3, in its original box, is a classic?
Yes
Wish I hadn’t sold mine
I've got the og 80gb with backwards compatibility..been sitting in my closet for years .. I'd be happy to trade it for one of your gpus 🤔
Just emulate the PS2 games using PS3 homebrew. It's not hard to do.
Austin: Builds something extreme like the ultimate PS5: Just uses a regular one.
