      yes because everybody has a 3d printer laying around.
      people work with what they had and the guy had some random parts that may help.
      alot of places dont have air conditioning and being a pc owner for over 20 years. cooling can make or break a system.
      and keeping max temps down even just a little can really make the life of the parts alot longer.
      also not everyone is skilled with tools or has tools or a workshop to do this kind of stuff.
      i recently did a crazy idea like this with my computer and couldnt be happier.
      i have a 240mm radiator that didnt fit inside of the case my 120mm aio died. so i strapped the 240mm on the back on the outside for a while to work till i planned my mod.
      finally had enough of it looking terrible and i used the side panel without the window to mount the radiator. now my pc looks like some crazy scifi heat vent and it pulls air out of the case to cool but the heat is all outside of the case and cant get back in.
      i have modded things for me and for friends for years like this and its always worth it.
      with a crazy enough mind and enough random materials laying around you can actually use your pc for a space heater in the winter and in the summer send all of the hot air out of your room or your house whichever is easier.

    Drilling holes in the PS3 isn't ideal. Usually what it does is redirect cooling from the PSU to the CPU and GPU giving the illusion that the console is cooler when in reality the PSU is most likely going to overheat. I guess the fan on top is to somehow compensate for this even though it would've been better to leave the shell as-is

    • @Scott-M1
      @Scott-M1 10 месяцев назад +2

      I don't think that's true, because the fan blades are situated to move the air in the same directions whether you mod the case or not, just with better air intake.
      If these consoles were were airtight, vacuum sealed, etc, then I'd agree you would have major problems, but they're simply not.

  • @paciuk5111
    @paciuk5111 11 месяцев назад +4

    These hardware mods are not necessary. Old Phat PS3s were suffering from YLOD, because Sony screwed up the fan curve in the SYSCON - the fan was not spinning with enough speed to dissipate huge amount of heat which CELL/RSX are producing. To prevent from YLOD, all you have to do is to CFW it and increase the fan speed that the CELL/RSX (mainly RSX which is not heat resistant) are not reaching 70-80 C degrees.

      PS3 ylod is the same fuckup as xbox rrod: engineers which did not take the classes necessary to know that the design will fail due to improper materials... designed chips for the fab (tsmc) which produced that green assembly with a chip glued&soldered on
      even with high fan speeds that crappy old gpu (or your fan) will fail at some point, only solution is to put in a slim gpu from a donor and modify the console accordingly (was also sonys method)

    My conclusion here is that your achieving a higher volume of airflow movement, therefore better thermals, i think a lot of it has to do with the added holes. Well because your fan is a semi fixed rate so only 2 ways to move more fluid increase pressue or increase volume, i think they went with volume, judging from the readings at the axhaust ports (because the temps are similar so i would conclude that airflow is moving at a very similar rate so the air still get heated to same temp you just have more of it to carry more heat, seems like simple fixes sony engineers should have figured out.

    I've repaired several of the backwards compatible PS3's It's crazy that overheating is enough to crack the solder. I've reballed two so far and both have worked afterwards. Still crazy though.

  • @Zebra66
    @Zebra66 10 месяцев назад

    This may sound crazy to some but the best "upgrade" for a PS2 and PS3 is a CRT. Preferably one capable of both 240/480i and 480p.
    PS2 games look and play better on a CRT. You lose a ton of detail to poor upscaling on an HD flat-screen. Plus light gun compatibility.
    The PS3 looks and runs better on a 480p CRT than on a 1080p flat-screen. Most PS3 games max out at 720p and almost no displays are native 720p. So you lose performance and image quality to scaling.
    Plus... 720p maxes out the performance capability of a PS3 which causes overheating. In Time Crisis 4 you only get 30fps in 720p but 60fps in 480p.
    I use my tri-sync crt arcade monitor and I see details on PS3 games that are simply missing on my 4k Oled.

    Despite all the time the engineers put into the PS3, they made a number of critical errors, the worst of them (in my opinion) being, they opted to use lead-free solder, which is inferior, and led to a LOT of launch PS3s dying, especially when used in a vertical orientation. The cooling system was also not designed very well. It could have been more effective, if sony hadn't prioritized manufacturing cost savings, over end product quality.

  • @kittentheboss2796
    @kittentheboss2796 10 месяцев назад

    While yes engineers have made the air flow the way it is but only to appease a certain form factor design, board placement etc. The point is if the cooling is better than that means it will last longer. I would have definitely put a dust filter behind that fan and keep it the hell away from any water but really at the end of the day part of me would just want to replace the entire case for a custom one focusing on cooling optimization. Especially for those ps3's.

    These old backwards compatible ps3 consoles tend to run very hot. They also are prone to the red light of death. They can be fixed if that happens by just baking the motherboard at 400° for 15 mins. Or you can have a Profesional reinstall the cpu, but that is very costly and time consuming.

    I'm not trying to toot my own horn, I'm just a simple guy that has built computers and tinkered his whole life. WAY back in the day when I bought the OG PlayStation 1, it wasn't but a couple of months when it wouldn't play, it kept locking up and I knew it was because it was over heating. I put a fan on the bottom and ran the PS-1 on it's side and it played perfect for a very long time. I like to think I was one of the first to add a cooling fan even though that is doubtful.

  • @nbrown5907

    Engineers are stuck with size and a price point, not always the best cooling solution. My new 4090 is 4 slots thick with a massive heat sink and 3 fans on it. The size of that heatsink is a good cooling solution.

  • @Emphasis213
    @Emphasis213 7 месяцев назад

    Not sure if the fan actually helps. The ps3 was designed with airflow moving from one part of the unit out through the other. Adding a fan disrupts this airflow, the fan is also sitting half way on top of the powersupply. I believe the PS on these console generations had no holes on the top, this just makaes the efficiency of the fan worse.

    The only way to prevent this model of PS3 from YLOD is to do Frankenstein mode. Basically is swapping processor from PS3 super slim to 60GB model. This is lowering down temps to acceptable area. Also is good to change NEC/TOLKIN if you are doing processor swap, they are also responsible partially for YLOD. Not cheep but if you want to have a rare model that will last much longer I think is worth it.

    • @ot4kon

      Delid of the processor is the only solution. The cell processor normal temp is 70c. The syscon runs quiters alternating the fan speeds between the min 20% and 25% and temps ranging 68c-72c.

    Ya they messed up the air pressure its positive now. Thats why ur stock one is sucking in air from the side vent and the modded one is blowing it out through there. More air flow means quicker dust build-up also. But its region locked so it has no purpose as a backwards compatible. Should be significantly cheaper than that.
