This worked perfectly. Followed all instructions and my system was updated in 30 minutes. Trophies, saved games, wallpapers, settings all transferred over. Also, that buggy issue where the game would glitch while watching in game movies ALL GONE. Thanks again for help.
Everything worked perfectly without any hitches. I used the same Western Digital HD that's in your PS3. The update and formatting went smoothly. Now I'm just waiting for the PS3 to restore my backed up data. Thanks for this very informational video. Before I had like 12gb left on my old 120. Now I don't have to worry about space.

Thanks. I found these videos to be very helpful. Today im opening up my ps3, dusting it, backing up, and replacing/upgrading my hdd. my current one keeps having hdd corrupt issues and i had to wipe everything to get it to play again and sadly i didnt have a backup. Ive converted my usb drive to fat32. Ive downloaded the Updat pup file from ps support to the UPDATES file in the PS3 folder on the usb drive. Im all set. Thanks again.

For anybody that's looking for a shortcut like if you don't own a laptop or computer simply just go on the Internet on your PlayStation three search up ps3updat.pup and insert your Flash drive drive into the PlayStation three and hit download and it it will give you an option to download it on your flash drive then after the download remove your flash drive put in your new hard drive and there you go boom shackalacka

Great video. Your instructions were very clear, thorough, and simple. One thing that threw me off was the firmware update. I had to go back and download the firmware in the end because, if I remember correctly, you did not mention downloading the firmware in the beginning. I also had difficulty in finding the new 4.40 update. It had just been released and wasn't yet available as a pup. file on the Playstation store. (That, however was NOT your fault. Anyways, good job. Thank you.
@GadgetMadness when i tryed that on my mates ps3 when we did the switch it wiped all his trophy's so wasn't to happy about that ... but i will just hope for the best thank you for your fast reply thank you very much with your videos they helped alot

Yeah the game saves and trophies were there but the DLC had to be downloaded again after installing the games, lol I was just glad it managed to back up the game saves, trophies were synchronized to PSN account.
Question: Does the back up save everything: online gameplayprogress(leveling), trophies, dlc's, userdata, movies and othermedia, friends and stuff you bought on the ps3 store?

Oh yeah! Everything was moved over. I had multiple accounts. Moved. DLCs moved. I had a few games downloaded from GameStop and all I had to do is re-install and I was able to play. Unfortunately, I do not have any friends...so I don't know about the friends list, but anything that you have downloaded and saved on the system will be transferred over once you restore your new system. If I backup my ps3 files, format the disc and then reinstall, would I be able to play the games I had with the original save files? Because I remember I had done that in the past and there was an error about the save file that it was another's user and couldn't get access to it.

Hmm. As soon as I installed the new drive and formatted the system at its request, I didn’t even need to install the the software. Just booted up like nothing happened. It was a brand new drive and I hadn’t moved anything into it. What happened exactly? Should I be concerned in any way?

hi there, we have a ps3 that has had the hard drive completely wiped, trying to install the updates on it via usb - have downloaded the file onto usb and name the folders but it just says checking for data and doesnt pick up the file/usb - we have windows vista on our pc. we saved the ps3 update to computer then put it into the folders on usb - please help

I have a question. I backed up everything on an SD card with my PS3....the mobo went down later so I replaced the motherboard but I'm using the same hard drive...I reformatted the hard drive but when I go to restore it, it recognizes the SD card but says no data. How can I put my info back on the hard drive from the SD card
or am I screwed?
You can download that update via android. Use a usb drive that accepts sd cards. Use file manager on android to transfer the files that's how I did it the last time
Hey I ran into an issue where when restoring from backup drive to new ps3 hard drive it says restore failed and then it rebuilds data base. After this it reboots and then I find most things have been transfered. However my PSN accounts and everything I downloaded is missing, my game utility data & my Demon souls & Dark souls save data are also missing. I have tried multiple times the outcome is the same. Would be very greatful for any advice

If you done this and to start off before doing any hard drive upgrades you were on 3.55 off would you have to upgrade to the highest version or stay on the same one?

for some reason the back up utility didnt work for me, it says cant access to usb, tried 4 times and nothing so I back up all my save data, music, movies, pictures, songs in the external hdd, but my I could not back my downloads...

Ive followed your video, and when i click start and select to find the update on my flash drive, it checks for 30 seconds then says the file is corrupt. put the flash drive back in my PC, to delete the PS3UPDAT.PUP. I planned on formatting my flash drive to FAT32, then trying to download it again. But the PUP file seems to have corrupted my flash drive. I'm lost. Your videos have helped many people, and are more informative that others, I'm hoping you could shed some light on this? Thanks!

just updated my ps3 from 120gb to 640gb. installing the hard drive was simple but backing up the data was a true pain in the ass, kept getting 80010038 error at around 84%.
Got it to backup finally by uninstalling all my games and deleting all my music and videos (thankfully i've got them on an external hdd).
that backup utility is a pain in the ass, wish it'd give more information as to why it fails, that error code is useless, even sony doesn't seem to know what it means.
So even if you restore on a "new" hard-drive/system, will ALL of your "Save Data Utility" AND "Game Data Utility" be restored?!
