  • What is hair porosity? This is such an important question that needs to be answered in order to be able to take care of Curly hair. However, the issue is always surrounded with so much complexity and jargon.
    In this video I break down exactly what hair porosity is, and how to differentiate between the three types of porosity ie High porosity, medium porosity and low porosity hair.
    I even show you pictures of high, medium and low porosity hair comparing them, in order to spot damage and identify the different types.
    I haven't used any complicated jargon in the video and it is very easy to understand. I have highlighted logical explanations and reasoning and stayed away from all technical terms that might complicate things.
    Hair porosity is a very simple and matter of fact term to understand.
    In this video, I stress on what hair porosity is, without delving into anything complicated so as to clear the concept thoroughly.
    Hopefully, once you watch this video, the question of hair porosity is totally answered in your mind.

    Hello kittens! The crux of the matter is this: to answer the question of porosity, you'll need to understand how your hair behaves, it's likes and dislikes. If you are unable to answer the questions I've put forward in this video, it probably means that you haven't experimented enough with your hair. My advice is to keep experimenting with products and amounts, you'll get there! ❤️
    One little note:
    Hair porosity (based on whether the cuticle is open or closed)
    Hair density (based on how much hair you have per square inch)
    Hair texture (based on how thick each strand of hair is)
    are different things and shouldn't be confused for eachother.

      The video said low porosity hair doesn't soak up moisture well, right? So why not use Glycerine, which attracts tons of water like a sponge? It seems way more hydrating than anything else! Would it even work for my low porosity hair? Please reply!!!!!

    Wow! My goodness, this was helpful! I especially appreciated your advice (at about 20:00) to not focus so much on porosity if we're still early in our CG process. Being told that I don't need to definitively know this right now (I'm only been doing CGM for a few weeks) is SUCH a big relief! I've been tearing my hair out (pun intended, LOL) trying to figure out my porosity because my "test" results are always so ambiguous. I currently have a bunch of new products (because I discarded all my DevaCurl products and had to replace them), so I'll stop obsessing about whether I chose the "right" products and will just use what I've got. It'll take a while for my hair and scalp to recover from DC damage, so I won't worry about pinpointing my porosity until next spring. Whew! Thank you again.

    • @MichelleManuel
      @MichelleManuel  2 года назад +1

      Yes. Absolutely. It takes lots of time to figure out porosity. It won't happen unless you've had time to experiment on cgm.

    Wow, I'm glad you made this explanation. I was super confused because mine seems to fluctuate between medium and high porosity. But I definitely have the same damage even though I have not colored it in 8 years, or used heat tools in a decade ago least. I think I was damaging it with the wrong or cheaper shampoo and conditioner plus more. I'm so glad I found your channel❤❤❤ My hair is literally identical to yours if I don't use styling cream and treat it right.
    Int certainty, my hair needs lots of moisture, but hates protein. Protein repair products harden it and fry it basically. Dries it out instantly. I'll have to watch that other video soon! Thank you 🏝️💖

      Also sun damage is real! The way we tie our way, the way we wear it to sleep. Abrasion etc so many things can damage our hair. Even water can be damaging. It's so lovely to hear your insights and personal experience.

    Hi Michelle am so happy I found your channel as just realised I have 2c hair. However I can't determine if I'm medium or high porosity. I used loreal regular shampoo, conditioner & leave-in together with serum & vitamin oil this wk & found my curls beautiful on Day 1. But Day 2 my scalp/crown area turned greasy, curls reduced 50% & hair not as shiny & soft, it was drier than Day 1. I may have oily scalp as I'm in Singapore & it's hot. Could you advise what's my porosity in that case? i have bleached once 6 mths ago & coloured recently. No salon straightening in 2 years. Seldom use heat at home too.

    • @MichelleManuel
      @MichelleManuel  2 года назад +1

      See theres a difference between curls lasting and shine lasting.
      If your curls are not lasting it points towards the kind of gel you're using and how much gel you're using.
      And whether your shine lasts is a matter of moisturization.
      Is the product you're using moisturising enough? Or do you need something heavier?
      This is determined by porosity. High porosity hair will have a problem retaining moisture and therefore needs heavier products. Low porosity hair doesn't need too much moisturization and feels weighed down with heavy product.
      So the crux is, I won't be able to judge as I can't see your hair or how it behaves. I'd ask you to mull over it and keep experimenting. In time you'll be able to understand porosity.

    Hi i have watched many of tour videos to get a hold of how to handle my hair, but i am reaallly confused about my hair type. My hair is very fine, dry, rough, frizzy, 3a type with dry scalp which i think is low porosity hair but when i put coconut oil on my scalp or any of the oils which i have tried yet i don’t really feel like my hair are getting any moisture. It feels like the oil is just sitting on the hair but if i oil my hair in the night and do not wash it the next morning… till the afternoon my hair is again dry and doesn’t feel i really oiled it which looks like a feature of high porosity hair.
    When i wash my hair it dries within 15 minutes if i dint apply any hair mask or leave in conditioner. But when i do apply masks and leave in conditioner my hair behave only on the day of the wash . It becomes frizzy the very next morning.
    I have suffering from severe hairfall of which I don’t know the cause. I have tried many medications, various products both medicated and the normal otc ones but to no avail. I really need some guidance as how to deal with my hair in order to make them smooth and strong. It would be a great help if you can reply and suggest me some ways.
    Just help me to determine the porosity of my hair it will be a great great help .
    As my hair don’t absorb moisture at all which i think in case of oils etc as it never feels nourished but when i apply products like hair mask etc it feels like nothing was used the very next day

    Hey Michelle! I just stumbled upon your content yesterday, and I am loving it! Got so many suggestions and answers which I was searching for last 6 months.
    But one question, I have low to medium porosity hair, but my hair loves protein conditioners. I do get buildup if I use heavy creams and butters, and I usually need to clarify my hair twice a month. Is it normal that my hair loves protein conditioners, but not protein based creames and heavy products? Or am I doing something wrong? 😅

    • @MichelleManuel

  • @matthewzaloudek
    @matthewzaloudek 2 года назад

    Great explanation. If I go 3 days without washing my hair looks greasy and my waves straighten out except near the very ends and it looks awful, and my hair hates product with too much conditioning, so I am low porosity. Never heat style or color it so that makes sense.

    • @MichelleManuel
      @MichelleManuel  2 года назад

      That's amazing. But one point though. Let say you have 2a hair. It's quite possible for your hair to be greasy if you have an oily scalp. In curlier hair, the oil has an issue travelling down the hair shaft. Not the case with looser wave patterns.
      You're definitely on the right track, but also consider if the above mentioned point is valid in your case.

    • @MichelleManuel
      @MichelleManuel  3 года назад +2

      I've never used the enliven conditioner. I have used their gel and mousse and definitely do like their product formulation in general.
      To answer your question, a humectant like glycerin can be one possible cause of wet frizz or webbing. If your product has a humectant, it should also have an occlusive ingredient to seal in the moisture. However in my opinion, the frizz caused by a humectant generally rears it's ugly head when dry. Companies have product formulators for this very reason. Unless you are applying raw glycerin without an occlusive ingredient such as an oil, butter, wax or gel to your hair, it shouldn't cause webbing.
      Webbing can we can an indication of various things. The need to clarify, damaged broken hair, improper aggresive styling, protein overload and so much more.
      If it makes you feel more comfortable avoid humectants and go for emmolient based moisturisers/conditioners instead.

But my hair feels super happy when I apply oils at the end of the wash day. I am not sure of the damage in my hair., that's because I have a wavy hair like Pali. And the curls at the end just goes off when I apply oil to my hair., Is it medium or high porosity? So going by the first 2 mins of the video - my hair doesn't absorb moisture so that means it's low porosity but then it's lifeless and damaged mostly so it's high porosity? That's confusing :(

    • @MichelleManuel
      @MichelleManuel  2 года назад +2

      I think you're misunderstanding.
      You left me a comment on my plum video as well. I think you misunderstood what I said there too. If your hair doesn't absorb moisture then go by that. (Your hair looking lifeless has nothing to do with porosity).
      High porosity hair will have no issues absorbing moisture.
      If your hair does not absorb moisture then rule out high porosity. (All this holds true only if what you're reporting is infact accurate).
      My advice is to keep styling your hair and experimenting. Come back to the question of porosity after a few months. I feel like you need more time to gain some clarity on how your hair behaves.

      Okay so there is also a genetic predisposition to porosity.
      But Im afraid all the indications mentioned in the video are related to how your hair behaves when it's styled. So maybe once you start a full styling routine you can reexamine the idea of porosity. It becomes very evident on month 6 of cgm. (Before that it's common to not understand the concept)

      See the question is product absorption and moisture retention right.
      If your hair is able to absorb and retain moisture then you have medium porosity.
      If dcing is causing a problem then that will point towards 2 things:
      1. Your dc is too heavy or light for your hair.
      2. Protein moisture balance is off and dcing is causing an overload of protein or moisture.
      Please have a look at my protein moisture video and see if you're able to pin point where you're going wrong.

Just trying to help so u don’t lose any comments. Could have been something silly like accidentally deleted by pressing something wrong. That’s entirely possible as well!

    As the curly girl method says we should keep our hair open to maintain the curl pattern, but it's difficult to do that in summers. Because we end up making bun out it. What's your solution for this?

    Is it possible to have 2 types of porosity on the same head? I used to straighten the top portion of my hair like 2-3 times a month, sometimes more, before I started CGM. I have coloured my hair once, but that was 5 years ago, so that hair is completely cut off. I think the crown section of my hair is high porosity and the rest is low to medium porosity. Also, my hair responds really well to protein hair mask (curd based). And it REPELS the FMC hair butter (I used it again today as a deep conditioner. It was disastrous 🥺). Also, I naturally have dry skin and scalp. Too much information? 🙈

    • @MichelleManuel

      It's absolutely possible to have 2 types of hair porosity.
      My bleached sections are higher porosity than the under sections of my hair. The bits I used to go over many times with a straightener are also higher porosity.
      About the protein bit, wait for part 4 & 5 of my protein moisture series.
      The FMC curl quenching hair butter a a level 4 to 4.5 with tucuma butter (good for high porosity hair as it coats and strands and doesn't penetrate the cuticle) not all products work for everyone.
      I've switched up my hair mask and suddenly the FMC curl butter is my fav moisture leave in till date. But again what works for me won't work for you! That's for sure. Try the ashba leave in maybe?

      I have started using the curl up cream at the moment. Getting decent results. Once that gets over, I have my eyes on Ashba next ❤️
      The FMC was a travel pack i bought during sale on amazon for 300 bucks. I shall save it for my high porosity friends now.
      What hair mask do you use?

      Use a little leave in conditioner and see if the appearance of your hair changes significantly.
      Does it look greasy- like the product didn't go in at all?
      What happens if you dc with a warm towel? Does it then looks moisturised
      (Low porosity)
      Does it look moisturised and did the moisture stays* for many days without any moisture loss during the week
      (Medium porosity)
      Does it suddenly look super moisturised? If it does, what happens after a few days? Is the moisture gone. You see that the hair wasn't able to hold onto the moisture?
      (High Porosity)

    I've decided by tht floating test too 😅😅😅... One doubt... *big text alert* 😅😅Yesterday I had applied more amount of conditioner and leaving and cream than regular... I feel volume was less than regular And also my be I'm judging but I felt curls were dragged down...And when I combed it after conditioner, extra conditioner was coming out along with extra water as I was combing.. Does that suggest my hair isn't taking that much moisture!!

    • @MichelleManuel

      I think you may have comprehended wrong. I said the floating test was not accurate for me.

    • @MichelleManuel
      @MichelleManuel  3 года назад +1

      If your hair is not absorbing the extra product, what does that mean? The cuticle is not allowing it in right? So it might be a case of a closed cuticle.... which is exactly what porosity is. Now do you get it??? :)

      Ok. So the water test is not reliable at all.
      You have coloured your hair right? How many times?
      Answer some questions for me:
      Which leave in conditioner are you using? After styling with leave in and gel, does your hair look moisturised?
      And does your hair look as moisturised during the rest of the week?

      @@perfer2885 ok. If you colour your hair frequently to cover Grey's there's a good chance you have high Porosity hair.
      I would strongly suggest switching to a leave in conditioner and then topping off with a gel. Have a look at one of my tutorials. The gel will help control the frizz to a great extent.
