  • My name is Justin Gray. I am a mix/mastering engineer and producer from Toronto, Canada. In these videos dedicated to Dolby ATMOS music production, I will be exploring the Dolby ATMOS immersive audio format, with the goal of sharing with artists and producers the inspiring potential this format holds for the future of music.
    Episode 1 explores an introduction to the Dolby ATMOS format and the use of Binaural audio for headphone delivery of immersive audio production. I also, introduce the concept of objects, and experience a stereo to binaural comparison, to get a sense of the potential of this format.

    To do the downfold to binaural audio from an atmosphere mix, did it need to be physically recorded in binaural audio set up with the two mics? Or is the downfold faking it from the atmos mix?

    • @justingraysound
      @justingraysound  3 года назад

      Good question. No, the Binaural is a downfold with specific rendering algorithms implemented by Dolby. There are currently a number of ways of manipulating the Binaural tuning of each element, and hopefully, in the future, that ecosystem will expand.

    Awesome video, Justin! I currently have a 5.1 home theatre system (all ceiling speakers), so if I bought an Atmos compatible amp, would Atmos tracks work ok with that setup, or should I get some height speakers to get a better sound?

    • @justingraysound
      @justingraysound  3 года назад +1

      It will work, which is what is impressive. Height channels will however be well worth it. Even a 5.1.2 would give you a sense of the original master.

    une question me tulupine .. avec un head phonne de qualité on peut mixer en binaural. est ce que ce meme principe peu s'appliquer avec des IEM de qualité similaire ( en supossant qu'ils soient bien balancer et custom ) ?

    • @justingraysound
      @justingraysound  2 года назад

      Bonjour. I will answer in English :) I can read and understand French, but I worry my grammar would be a bit rusty for a response to this topic. The same principles here apply that do for stereo mixing and mastering. We want a flat response and/or headphones that are complementary to the speaker setup (although this is near to impossible with any headphones). I personally use my Audeze LCD-4 for every mix/master. I also use the Audeze LCD4z when I need to do longer sessions, as they are lighter. I then do sonic averaging on my air pod max. If I had to choose a single pair right now, it would be the LCD-4 hands down. For a lower price point, I think the LCD-X is also very very good headphones. IEM's are very risky, as in general, even the best of them are far from flat. I have a pair that were also "custom" that I used to use for my remote session work, but I would not trust them for mastering. That said, if you are sending the track for mastering, then use what you know best, and have a mastering engineer use their array of tools to ensure final translation

    How far beyond the Dolby graphic walls can the distance of objects be set?

    • @justingraysound
      @justingraysound  3 года назад

      They cannot be "further". THose walls represent the actual speakers, so of course, we cannot physically put sound beyond those walls. That said, with production techniques, we can make things seem as far or close as we want.

    Dolby Atmos render support for windows 10.....?

    • @i.a.m-poornasrikarm
      @i.a.m-poornasrikarm 3 года назад +1

      There is Dolby Atmos Mastering suite which is for windows 10 but you have to get it from a local dealer not on the dolby developer website . Alternatively, you have Davinci Resolve Studio edition which has native Dolby Atmos rendering built in for windows 10 but note that there is no bin monitor for it and you need to export your mix as ADM BWF in order to import back to actual DAPS for deliverables and mastering purposes . Another best seamless , cost efficient and esiest way for people who are stuck on windows 10 like me is using AWS Elemental MediaConvert . It is possible that You can encode your 3D surround music to Dolby Atmos ( dd+JOC 768 ) using AWS ( see their pricing per minitue encode job , reasonable I guess ) . For example you are using Reaper on windows 10 and you want to also export your mix to Dolby Atmos as a side car this is best option as for now that I do lot of times. But it has a restriction that you will be only able to do a CBI based encodes. That means the concept of object based and DAPS's unique abilities to process an object differently from a bed no longer there for you if you are on windows 10. Here is the workflow.... You prepare a 9.1.6 mix first in your Reaper , u can use tools like SpatRevolution or MPEG-H or EAR suites that lets you work in 9.1.6 dolby atmos bed only mode ..from there head over to AWS dolby atmos page, it is a cloud based computing technology ..i highly recommend it for collaboration purposes ( for example you want to send your 9.1.6 beds to mastering engineer here Justin Gray where he can then turn them into objects ( it is recommended you send each stem as discrete 9.1.6 multichannel stems to him and don't send a complete 9.1.6 bouncedown because there is no point between CBA and OBA then and it will be fake objects experience or again just an oldskool bed which is easily suffered by phantoms inside a Dolby Atmos equipped Cinema theatres. Each stem with 9.1.6 can be turned to objects to gain more control of how your mix is to sound better than just a static 9.1.6 bed . What so unique about Atmos object system is I can literally pan things beside your shoulder or in between the room to address better therefore resulting in rich emotional experience that often I find in Dolby Atmos testimorials by many artists has described about this uniqueness in Dolby Atmos that will not suffer from phantom imaging of something , parts form that we already know it is a great hEIGHT projecting tool ) and that's all ...you are good to go. Alternatively AWS lets you encode your mix then and there itself to Dolby Atmos dd+joc 768 in an mp4 container for AVR and Cinema QCs ...ofcourse you will be getting height content for sure but it is what all the majic lies when it is panned as an object . See if you can get access to a mac book pro and DAPS ultimately but again nothing is stopping you from prepare Dolby Atmos mix or Dolby Atmos music with a windows 10 machine... Head over to AWS mediaconvert dolby atmos for more information.
