      They are one of the most lovely cans for home enjoyment listening. They are a bit bass-heavy / dark to be a mastering-level headphone. They are still miles ahead of most mixing headphones though. At this point, I would suggest the MM500 in that same price range.

    Do those speakers have really good vertical dispersion that allows you to have them so much higher than your ears?

    • @justingraysound
      @justingraysound 2 месяца назад

      Although they do have excellent dispersion, the camera angle is deceiving. The tweeters are level with my ears when I am sitting at my desk. I am sitting back in my chair for this video, and the angle of the cam makes it seem like they are higher. Good observation.

    1:52:53 How often would you say QC failures get through the Atmos pipeline? I'm reminded of the Atmos mix of Washington on Your Side on the Hamilton soundtrack. The bass track is woefully out of sync. I've seen a few mentions of it online, and tweeted Dolby about it, but it's still screwed up (at least on AM).

    • @justingraysound
      @justingraysound 2 месяца назад

      QC failures are usually due to human error, but when it comes to any music production, mistakes can happen. What matters is that we catch them before release. Stereo and Atmos require careful QC to ensure something like this does not happen. Even if the technology caused an issue like what you describe, it is the responsibility of the engineers to catch it and rectify it. I work with major labels daily, and one of the things I admire most about their teams is their QC standards. They are ruthless (in a good way). As an engineer, I don't want QC notes, as they cause delays, so I do my best to catch everything before delivering a master file to an artist, producer, composer, or label.

    Hey Justin! Great work. Don’t need to use the Cinema Renderer to do an 11.2.6?

    • @justingraysound
      @justingraysound 2 месяца назад

      No. You can access it via Array mode in the external. It will likely not be a feature within PT for a very long time. Arrays do require specific tuning, as they do not act the same as the other channels (they differ between objects and beds). HE studios are not allowed to have the cinema renderer (and that makes sense), so I still go to a soundstage here in Toronto to finalize and author for cinematic release.

    I've heard Lipinski's passive L-707 and active L-700 and I consider them an ultimate pick for audio enthusiast. They have the most natural and real playback one can expect. Some say, that the sound is even better than live performance, and there is definitely something to that. Not only do they play well on low and medium loudness levels, but they can also perform loudly without distortion. I came across the Lipinskis by accident a year ago, and to this day I cannot fathom why something so outstanding receives so little attention. This is truly a hidden gem.

    I was wondering how often you get idgits trying to argue the contrary point of view. I have had the same discussion with several “top” studio engineers in LA and Miami. Several actually asserted that anything above 0dBFS is irreparably “lost” regardless of the recording bit depth. Interestingly, a couple are engineers that mix on NS-10’s at around 85-90 dB all day. Maybe it is that they’re simply hearing the ringing in their ears… who know?

    • @justingraysound
      @justingraysound 3 месяца назад

      If I understand correctly, these are two different things. If we cross 0 dbfs in the digital domain, that information is indeed "lost" as it is clipped at the final authoring/conversion stage. The discussion of mixing at 85-90 db is in relation to what listening volume they use in the room, which is not related to the internal digital headroom (dbfs). Does that make sense?

      So nice to hear from you and thank you, my friend! The MM-500 is impressive. I have compared them several times, and I do recommend those headphones. I think they are likely the best value available right now. There is a certain level of upper-frequency clarity and speed that the LCD-5 has, which the 500 doesn't quite reach, but I think the 500s are world-class headphones, and I would be happy mixing on them. Hope that helps.

    Why do you create object-beds for signals that are not moving; why not use the bed channels directly? I thought bed and object modes were sonically identical when not moving?

    • @justingraysound
      @justingraysound 3 месяца назад

      They do indeed. The reason I used so many objects here is very specific, and largely because separate objects allow me more control over binaural render modes. Also, I have designed this specific mix to be able to eventually go to a cinematic format, which means I want to be able to potentially adjust some levels later on a soundstage. The objects will remain separate in the mastered ADM, which means I can adjust their level later when I get to the cinema. There really is no disadvantage to using many objects in discrete locations, unless you are looking to do bus-style compression, which is not required for me in this particular project.

      What I mean by that it’s so overly complicated that only 20% of people who would need to know this stuff actually know this stuff (and that’s being generous). As a result, 80% of Dolby Atmos art arrives not as intended. That’s a problem. That’s Dolby’s failure. The system needs to be far, far simpler. Or, the hardware medium needs to be standardized under one company’s roof.

    • @jordanhenshaw

      My company will try to make spatial audio beautiful for everyone by mass-producing enhanced, standardized performance venues that are absurdly high-tech jukeboxes by day and other things by night. One format. One type of venue. One type of room. One mega-intuitive software. Tech side completely separate from art side. Every city in a America. Rent venue room during day for $50/hr. Everything is always perfect every time without fail save an act of God. It’s only room, one system copy pasted everywhere. And it’s about Brand name. You walk into my theater for an in-house show and you know for a fact you will receive a quality experience. The Dolby name is everywhere on everything so it means nothing.
