Decorrelating Audio with PenteoPro+ in Immersive Music Mixing - Justin Gray

- My name is Justin Gray. I am a mix/mastering engineer and producer from Toronto, Canada. This video explores how I use PenteoPro+ to decorrelate audio sources in my immersive audio mixing and production.
In this video, I demonstrate some of the new features in PenteoPro+, a few of which I developed with the Penteo team (Stem Pass-Through & Stem Upmix Modes).
The video also includes an in-depth presentation on immersive audio mixing philosophy, with a focus on decorrelation, immersive recording, and spatial remixing.
I finish the video with an audio demo, where I use PenteoPro+ to upmix a drum stem from one of my own recordings and productions in Dolby Atmos. In this demo, I compare the sound of Penteo in 9.1.4 with a native immersive recording of drums which was captured using extensive immersive microphone techniques. USE HEADPHONES FOR THIS DEMO, as it is a binaural stream from the Dolby Atmos Renderer.
Please visit my website for more about my studio, and work. I look forward to connecting.

You just answered a ton of questions, thank you so much!
Great video, Justin. You do a great job explaining everything (natural teaching abilities!). Thank you!
Finally got a chance to watch this video - great work Justin. Your music is very evocative!
Fascinating Justin, thank you for doing this (and all your) videos.
Thanks for sharing your discoveries, appreciate it! I've ruined a few headphone mixes making a super fun speaker experience, I guess there's a place and a time for that. Cheers!
Thank you. I also know of some great speaker experiences that were compromised by making super fun headphone experiences :) In the end, I am always looking to find the balance. For now, with this project, I am enjoying focusing on the speakers almost exclusively at this stage. That said, did you enjoy the sound in the headphones of this video?
@@justingraysound You're right. Yes, sounded nice in the headphones, seems like an amazing (and a tad crazy) endeavour but looking forward to listening in a speaker setup. Have a nice day!
Thank you Justin
Amazing!!!! the goat of atmos 🔊🔊🔊🐐 🔊🔊🔊

@@justingraysound what's your favorite immersive reverb btw?
@@blinksy7201 Tough call. Likely Cinematic Rooms has to take the cake, but I also use Lustrous Plates and Seventh Heaven often.
Very interesting talk

Why do you create object-beds for signals that are not moving; why not use the bed channels directly? I thought bed and object modes were sonically identical when not moving?
They do indeed. The reason I used so many objects here is very specific, and largely because separate objects allow me more control over binaural render modes. Also, I have designed this specific mix to be able to eventually go to a cinematic format, which means I want to be able to potentially adjust some levels later on a soundstage. The objects will remain separate in the mastered ADM, which means I can adjust their level later when I get to the cinema. There really is no disadvantage to using many objects in discrete locations, unless you are looking to do bus-style compression, which is not required for me in this particular project.
Great video, great plugin. A bit pricey though :(
It is. Compared to its competitors, it is pretty reasonably priced, but I fully respect that this kind of investment should be made with care. That is why for me, I made a video that talks not just about what it can do, but why one might want to use it. Thanks for watching.
@@justingraysound i agree. do you have to have a physical ilok usb dongle?
Good question. I do have one, and use it for Penteo, but it is worth checking their site to see if there is another way.
@@justingraysound Good news! Their support answered immediately: Penteo can be deployed onto iLok USB or iLok Host Machine (no USB).
